Its from a really good movie, brother where art thou. Its not specifically america but it was written for the movie which is set in the south sometime in the early 1900s. Highly recommend 👌
The movie came out when I was 3 years old, and my dad always used to play the soundtrack on long car journeys. This song (and the others- Big Rock Candy Mountain, You Are My Sunshine, Down To the River, In The Jailhouse Now, etc) WAS my early childhood!
Then later, the Coen brothers (along with Tarantino, Scorsese, etc) came to define my adolescence as I developed an interest in cinema.
So yeah, overall O Brother is a pretty special movie for me...

I like it but in the real version there aren't any gaps between the verses.
There actually is the second time it’s performed in the movie! In the original soundtrack, the second time the song appears there are breaks in between the verses :)
Great song! The only good thing from that weird movie it was in. They did a great job on this one. Bluegrass is tough to play. This song brings out my country roots. Been a while since I sang with a long drawn out drawl like this. :)
