Keith Moon, on those first four albums, was an absolute monster on his way to Buddy Rich status. Sadly, booze and drugs took him down and by Who's Next he wasn't a shadow of his former self.
@@raymondkitchen6137 I tend to agree; the first six records are really where it's at. I'd probably add "Quadrophenia" just because it's the peak of Townshend's songwriting and an amazing concept album.
Never seen this performance before! Awesome… I see Kelley was sticking with the business casual look at this early stage a la the “Safari” video… and I guess Jo couldn’t make it… Cool to see Jimmy McPherson playing the kettle drums! Classic Who song… doubtless chosen by Kim, lamenting the Pixies recent break up…
I’m pretty sure I heard Kim mention that they did a TV appearance with some session players and a drummer looked like he was jerking. I don’t know if she was referring to this but they were laughing about it with the guy after the show.
well he was caught by the police for doing some really heinous shit which he admitted to, so it's really easy to dislike him as a person, but he did write some great songs

Great cover by The Who, it's a beautiful poetry of separation, a little unexpected for Breeders, and great work, although I would add more power to the vocals, but it's also nice to see
Not so much a fan of the man of Letter (or his annoying "bandleader") as I've gotten older, but I will always hold a special place for the Deals 😍💓. It's been that way for the past 30 years.
Always loved this song. Like all great songs it doesn't really belong to anyone. It can only be interpreted. And this is the best of the lot. Kim is a special person.
Belly was already technically started before she entered. their EP dropped June 29. Safari dropped April 6. she switched bands sometime between March and July I guess.
@@notsure6187 Also, I know Letterman in those days would sometimes have only the frontmen on the show, and the house band would fill in. Drove a lot of people crazy when they'd do that shit. I was wondering if she felt snubbed by not being featured, even though she was lead on the album.
It's the Keith Moon factor lol They recorded his drums in a way not very common in 1966... also Pete was precise with his guitar in the original. I think maybe Kim wanted a more loose version... it's a gamble.
Much better than the WHO. This doesn't mean i like the song or the band. Some of the melody reminds of the Beatles "If I needed Someone" and some other song.
Got this as a link after I watched The Who do this live on Beat Club . Keith going apeshit on drums ,awesome . The Jam also did a great version .
I just saw that, not a great performance. The Jam do a great version, for got about the Breeders
I have a solution for world peace: have Kim Deal go all over the world smiling at everyone.

I love my wife -- but I'm also in love with Kim Deal!
It's great how Letterman's band breaks into "Substitute" at the end. They knew their musical history.
@@anthonygerace8926 Who would not ?
The original was a Keith Moon masterclass in how to completely takeover a simple love song and smash it to bits. Any rock drummers must listen!!!

Very cool. A Townshend composition mid-60s. My mom always liked the harmonies, when I would play it back in the day. Great cover.
Amazing to see them debut with a Who song! Loved them from day 1
This song has inspired some great coverage. Of course they're always missing just one thing: Moon.
Debut on this show? TV? Because their LP Pod came out like three years before this!
oh man. I love that song. so glad I found this.
good to see the beginnings of a great group. thanks for the upload!
Glad you enjoyed it, and took the time to say so :) Much appreciated.
Wow, I sure miss the ‘90s, musically and otherwise.

"I hope they enjoyed their nap as much as we did." - David Letterman (true quote to his producer Shiela Rogers after the show.)

I can’t believe it! How did they think to do THIS song???
I’m so in love with Kim Deal 😭
It’s a great song and it’s easy. A lot of bands have covered it.
My guess is that Kim chose this song to cover, lamenting the Pixies recent break up

I like the breeders, but this is not a good cover - flat energy, out of key - surprised they didn't try to have this removed
It's pretty much the same thing as the studio recording on "Safari" EP. Except maybe Kim's voice.
I shouldn't have listened to this IMMEDIATELY after listening to The Who. it wasn't fair to The Breeders, it just sounds awful to me.
Far too weak a voice for a fabulous song by Mr Townsend

There's no arguing that they sound very amateurish. But as for song selection, that album track from The Who is a good one!

Agreed. Besides Belly being bad, leave it to a hack player like Anton Fig to suck, and suck all the energy out of the performance.
