Perfectly captured the "vibe" of the original tune. Beautiful ensemble playing, perfectly balanced, and most importantly...not overplayed. Beautiful alto solo Karolina...and Desmond's ensemble solo tribute was wonderful. What an arrangement. What a band!!
THANK YOU WDR...! And the mention of Paul Desmond's simple and melodious solo (which was one of the things that fascinated me on that recording), as he did not intend to be "virtuous", with a far-fetched and technical improvisation, but presented a kind of added "second composition". to the main theme! My memory is happy with the tribute you pay to the quartet. I feel honored too! Another GOAL for the "fans" of quality music... VALEU!... (that's how they say it here in Brazil) - OBRIGADO WDR...! Eu me sinto homenageado também!
While I prefer the quirkiness and sparseness of the original, if you like the "corners rounded off" and smoothing it out so to speak, this is certainly worth a listen. Quite nicely done.
I've always loved this song since it inspires me when I compose/play in 5/4 so this is such a pleasure to hear your arrangement! The musicianship here inspires me as a guitar composer for book trailers about comics since I all of your skills at using dynamics and keeping the rhythm figures so tight with one another is astounding. Many many cheers!
Oh Mann! 🤩🤩🤩
What a beautiful arrangement! I love the dark sound with the mutes and dense inner voices. It really evokes some of the 50's/60's jazz period, and brought to mind composers like Johnny Mandel and Claus Ogerman. The full band treatment of Desmond's solo is inspired. And great recording, too, which is always the case on these WDR sessions!
Hats off to Karolina! Suitably reverential yet different arrangement by Stefan Pfeifer-Galilea that keep the signature 5/4 time which caught my pre-teen ears and still excites me at age 73! R (Australia)
Hey, thanx for the nice story. We have some more Brubeck stuff for you...about 10 pieces, here are two: th-cam.com/video/FB3HTpyoG4k/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/ZA3nhiF5nMA/w-d-xo.html
I remember when I was in middle school and the high school choir came in to demonstrate what we could be if we tried hard and continued doing choir, with just 4 of them a capella they sounded BEAUTIFUL (they did the lyric version).
I was tapping along ( in the absence of drumming ability or gear 😬 ) with this on my knees, and could easily have enjoyed another 20 or 30 times round the theme😀 thankyou very much.
You're right - the wording was perhaps misleading: Brubeck founded his quartet with Paul Desmond on saxophone, Joe Dodge on drums, Bob Bates on bass was founded by the American pianist Dave Brubeck in the early 1950s. But "Take 5", probably the most famous title of the legendary record "Time Out", was recorded with Joe Morello on drums and Eugene Wright on bass.
👏👏.. ♫EXCELLENT♬ cover of this classic jazz composition. Fantastic musicians, **beautiful** instrumental balance, just chef's kiss!!! 💖💖💖 I have *GOT* to check out more of this band's music!!!
Do it, Wayne! And...on wednesday, november 30 at 8 pm a WDR BIG BAND concert with the music of Dave Brubeck will be livestreamed here on our youtube channel
Saw the Brubeck boys at Ronnie Scott's. They played all the tunes, and then, sort of reluctantly, 'by public demand' played Take Five. Never mentioned Paul Desmond's name once. I get the same sort of feeling reading the above.
Reverence 5 triads; colors, Pang , Winter, Beauty, Stuck ( ERIC SATRE, MURCHOSKEY) , 5/4 meter Take 5. Unusual rhythm beat or 4/4 or 5/4 waltz time. Amazing ❤️🌹

It was Joe Morello, not Joe Dodge. Dodge retired from jazz in 1958. Take 5 came out in 1959 with Time Out -> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Out_(album)

This has long been referred to as elevator music. Middle of the road, nonoffensive, innocuous. Listened to long enough has been Known to induce sleepiness.
Wunderbar.
Kurz : Weltmusik. Danke !

Everything is nice with this one.----- Arrangement----Band----- And Karolina's solo. Really enjoyed it.
Thank you, Dean!
Very nice take on a jazz classic. Super-proficient ensemble edging on a little too slick. Beautiful arranging for horns.

This is a fantastic version but the line-up of the Dave Brubeck Quartet at the time featured Joe Morello on drums and Eugene Wright on bass.
