Awesome, thorough job Michael. Nice to see a good balanced review! I shoot both Nikon (D600) and Canon (60D) because they each have their strengths, in line with your observations.
You just changed my decision on my purchase Mike. Thank you so much. I want to shoot landscapes and low light city scenes at night. There might be a misunderstanding. The D600 wasn't just slow in low light on low contrast targets without it's AF lamp.... it was unable to focus entirely. It did fine on the other 3 tests. If you don't ever turn your AF lamp off, it wont be an issue.
I answered this, I said they are very comparable (meaning similar) and I was very specific in my video as to what I said. I focus on how the cameras are different. If the D600 and 6D are similar in RAW, and the 6D is better in JPEG ISO noise, how would that make the D600 be a better camera in RAW? If anything the 6D has the edge in higher ISO on RAW but I didn't see it as significant enough to mention. That not misleading, that focusing on how the cameras are significantly different.

What do you mean by "misleading"? Are you saying the D600 should be afforded a handicap because it is native only to 6400? Im confused by your comment.
Thanks for making this video and going in-depth on crucial differences between D600 and D60. I am looking forward to what you might have to say about the differences between the new D610 and 6D.
The low light accuracy test assumes that when the camera square lights up red, as well designated with the audio signal, is that the camera is confirming the distance to the target, and if all systems are working correctly, it should be in focus. Is this always the case? Not always, but usually. Many things can go wrong. I also took many test shots, one of which was shown (dark tape on gray carpet) and it look good to me. Problem with the Nikon was I wasnt getting focus lock without af lamp
Thanks for the quick reply! If possible, can you post the RAW high ISO comparison pictures too? It might help the RAW shooters, whereas the JPG results are a bit misleading. I'm not sure how much difference this makes, but the Nikon sensor is only native up to 6400, (12800 and 25600 are boost), while the 6D is native up to 25600 I think. Thanks again!
GREAT test results Michael.....thank you so much for taking the time to do it. You think the 6D might have some upcoming updates to correct some of their focusing issues? I know the Mark III did have some updates regarding focusing
Hi Michael, I love your videos and thank you for sharing them. I'm a hobbyist and thinking about upgrading to full frame with 6D/D600 + 24-70 2.8. Since I only have a Canon 550D w/ 50mm 1.8, I can get ride of them easily. My only concern is the lenses of Canon and Nikon, not just 24-70mm, whose will have a better performance with equal prices? Thanks for your time.
Mike, your video shows me that the 6D is worth the money and that makes me want to buy it and make my 60D the backup. I am not a PRO, but I love shooting and mostly landscape, town scenes. Thanks for a wonderful shootout video
I did indeed test the outer focus points as well, they all failed in these conditions on both cameras. The 6D's center square is the only one that has low light performance.
Thank you Michael for making such an informative video. It compares well the pros and cons of the two cameras. Frankly speaking, your video has put me in dilemma. I use to shoot in films and my whole set up is based upon Pentax. Since, Pentax is not getting a full frame body, and also film processing and printing is history, I have no option but to move to digital. My photographic skills have grown around the format of 36 mm by 24 mm. So, it is close to impossible to downgrade myself with APS-C crop sensor. The two models that you compared are the cheapest full frame DSLR, yet not so cheap. My interest are in candid street photography and most of the time I work on 400 ISO. Sometimes, I do shoot in low light. I have couple of questions for you, if you do not mind. (1) Depending on the type of photography I do, which camera body shall I go for?; (2) Do the Canon 6D offers simulated Yellow, Green, Orange and Red filter while shooting monochrome?; (3) Do the 39 focusing points in the viewfinder of Nikon D600 appears obstrusive while composing a shot, as compared to 11 focussing points of Canon 6D?; (4) Which viewfinder was noticeably brighter? Please guide me on this.
I agree, In the field shooting is very different. DXO's scores on ISO are in favor of the D600, but when we read the fine print their ISO test also includes a benchmark for dynamic range & color bit depth, which doesn't make any sense. Testing the Dynamic Range, Color Depth and ISO Noise are 3 different things, not one. Additionally their score says nothing of higher ISO levels. I like the D600's dynamic range - it is impressive. Likewise the 6D's low noise in higher ISOs is equally impressive.
Hi Michael, I have one question regarding what you wrote : "D600 is better as an "all round" camera, the 6D excels in low light (wedding photographers are going to love the 6D)." If we consider the technical tests of DxOLabs we can see that the low light performance of the Nikon D600 is 2980 ISO while the score of the Canon 6D is 2340 ISO. So, with all due respect, how can you write "D600 is better [...] while the 6D excels in low light" ? Thanks for your answer.
This was such a great review! Thanks a lot for making this video, the 1080p was awesome for seeing the difference between the two cameras. I've made up my mind now and will go with the 6d, for both reasons in your video and for where each is manufactured.
Thank you. Well there's always the HSS mode :) After watching this movie I see that most of negative opinions (mainly about 6D) are exaggerated. Btw. what do you think about this lens combo for 6D (portrait and studio photography). Tamron 28-75/2.8, Canon 70-200/4 (non IS) and Canon 85/1.8?
I dont remember publishing a RAW high ISO test here. Lets see there was JPEG (which includes ISO Noise Reduction), Video (provided & obvious) and RAW banding test (which tests for lines in RAW not noise). The language, descriptions and titles are pretty precise, you might want to watch that part again.
Great work Michael. Not sure if someone has said this already, but with regard to low-light performance, your findings (6D being the winner) only apply to JPEG. -In RAW, D600 is easily one stop better. I recently shot with both. I think the Canon's jpeg rendering engine has a better & more efficient noise reduction & sharpening algorithms. -Which totally explains the superior video performance as well.

Hello Michael, thanks so much for investing lot of time and effort to create such an AMAZING review. I'm a wedding photographer shooting with 5D II. I'm looking to upgrade and I was logically looking into the 5D III but after your review it seems that the 6D would do the wedding photography job very well and it would be a huge improvement over the 5D II especially the high ISO noise. Is the 6D good enough as main wedding photography camera? I shoot 40-50 wedding per year. Thanks so much! -Jack-
Uh...I did point out that fact (@14:50). I also showed the performance of the D600 with (@12:56), without it's AF light (@14:31), and the 6D "out of the box" (@12:16) with no AF assist. I also summarized the winners under different circumstances (@17:12). You are complaining about things that are clearly explained. So, no you didn't watch the video.
This sounds right. Actual noise on RAW files out of both cameras were much more comparable. It seems the 6D's advantage is mainly in JPEG and Video (which is a form of JPG) and more so when ISO noise reduction is turned on (again it is only applied to JPG). That said, the ISO clean up on the 6D is better than Ive seen on any other Canon camera.
Thanks Michael!! I think I'm going with the 6D, Impressed with the low light performance and the low light focusing... nice review by the way! both are great cameras.
Hello Michael, many thanks - your testing in comparison is really great. I do use the Nikon D600 and I am all about satisfied, I am not a Pro so to say, but I do photography for nearly 40 years now. Many thanks to you and your work. Really good.
Thanks for the great review/comparison. For me personally the Canon 6D was the winner, as I prefer to shoot in natural /dimm lichting. Keep up the good work!
Ridiculously thorough review. As I D600 owner, I completely agree with your assessment of the camera. I find the D600 excels at portraits and landscapes, does well with casual filming (family, trips, etc) in daylight, but struggles when filming low-light video (using my 50mm 1.8 or 24-70 2.8); I also *hate* how you can't change the aperture in live view. My other gripe is Nikon's refusal to acknowledge the oil splatter issues and how they devalued the D600 so quickly after its release by releasing the D610 - which seems to exist solely to resolve the shutter issue. I've cleaned my sensor a couple times now and thankfully it has worked out well, but having to do this frequently might get old quickly. Other than that, I'm quite happy with my D600. If I was going to do shoot a lot of DSLR video, especially in low light, I'd definitely go with a 5Dmk3, no question about it.
Thanks for the Review Michael, I love the straight-forwardness of the video, and the depth review. I am a canon user, but Canon / Nikon, I think both are really great cameras, even the entry level, both are performing very well. thanks!
Very balanced and informative post. I am ready to upgrade from my D5000..primarily for better low light performance. I would like to be able to photograph my toddlers with the ambient (low light) in the house...Given that Nikon is better at AF and Canon better at High ISO ...which one would you recommend for my needs?
Micheal, your comparison review is awesome. It is in full detail and technical comparisons are beyond perfect! Thanks a lot. Waiting for your further 'pro' reviews. I am one more time happy to select Canon 6D again. : )
Your camparison video is fantastic. But anyways - I still cannot decide which way to go :( Main tasks that my camera would do is: - Taking pictures and videos of my son participating in Ice Hockey tournaments (relatively low light) - Taking pictures and videos of my family wakeboarding and kiteboarding - Taking pictures and videos from trips - Taking pictures and videos from everyday life outside and inside (relatively low light) What would be your suggestion for came in my case? Thanks
For a first time user, I like the D3200 more. I have both the D3200 and the D5200, while the flip out monitor is cool and it has better focusing squares, its not worth the extra $300.
Hey! great video, kudos! If it's not too much trouble I'd like your input on something... I'm getting into aerial photography with a multi rotor, for commercial use not as a hobby or a toy, so most shots will be taken at about 50-100mts and up to maybe 500m away, I know there's a lot more factors involved but what would be your recommendation for a camera, the 5Dii (or iii) or de D600? Thanks and keep up the good work!
suspect this is already been said, but at 23:00 w/ the girl and tree background, comparison ISO and softness on the 6D, the difference, at least in the example shown, is the focus point; ISO 400 that looks sharp has girl in focus, ISO 25600 has tree in focus.
I started photography with Sony cyber shot as a hobby and than bought a Pentax k10 then during my armature years I bought the canon 50D and now I'm thinking of joining the Nikon family! I am a professional graphic designer but always been taking photos as hobby and few paid photography projects. Loving all the reviews here and I feel quit convince I'll be happy joining the Nikon family soon :) thanks for the wonderful in depth reviews! A new sub :)
Hi Michael. It was an wonderful video. I would like to know if I want to use 6D for wedding and if I do not have any external flash then will there be any auto focus problem in the low light?
Wow! What a good comparison and review. And the opening sequence is just outstanding.. all the way up thru the checklist shot. I especially like the way the setting sun pokes out from behind a rock as the camera moves along the trail. Very inspiring to those of us who are learning video! Thank you for your (considerable I'm sure) effort!
Awesome video showing real life performance of these two great cameras. But got two questions about Canon 6D. 1. Flash sync speed - is the 1/180s problematic in real life? Or it's just a minor flaw that can be overcome with a bit of expirience? 2. Filming using the EOS App - heard that the live view and operation in filming mode while using WiFi is a bit limited compared to stuff you can do on the camera.
Hi Michael, amazing video review. In the video at 2:05 you mentioned that D600 has "motion tracking" in video mode. I was wondering how it performs compared to older generation Canon camera auto focus feature which I think stutters when the camera attempt to focus and refocus a subject. Also is the video "motion tracking" feature exclusive only to Nikon or Canon 6D and 5D MIII have this feature as well. My last Canon camera which I sold aready was EOS 550D (yes very long time ago).. Thanks
Howdy. So changing the aperture in live view with the D600 requires three or four steps. That sounds very annoying. How about if you're simply using the viewfinder? Is is simpler there? Regarding video, where does the 5d Mark2 fit in compared to these 3 cameras? Last? Thanks!
Hey, I'm wanting to go to a full frame and currently have a canon 600d/t3i. I usually shoot street photography, especially in evenings and night. Which would you recommend get? I like the D600s AF a lot better and is really the only reason I'm considering it over the 6D. However, for low light situations, the ISO seems better on the 6D but the AF in lowlight seems better with Nikon because it has the built in focus assist thing. Does the D600s AF and 24mp, as well as price do enough to switch?
Great video! Thank you for all the work. I got my 6d in december already, so it wont affect my choice of the body. However, I will be buying your crash course. Seems like i can learn a lot!!! What would be your suggestion for me 70-200 f4 IS or 70-200 f2.8 no IS for lower light and if to use a flash, do i even need to think about IS (not a pro, no paid work, just want to make beautiful memories without hauling too much weight).
Excellent and serious test. Congratulations and thank you. And I specially appreciated that fact that you didn't was afraid to mention the nasty sensor spot issues on the D600 that Nikon tried to hide! To bad I didn't knew that before I bought it! I already sold it, and all my trust in Nikon went down.
Great video Michael! This video has been a big help in determining which one to get. I'm going to pick up the 6d next month (and yes I'll be picking up your Crash Course video for the 6d) One piece of info that was missing I thought was where each camera is manufactured. From what what I was reading the d600/610 is manufactured in Thailand, where the 6d is manufactured in Japan. I'm not saying/implying the Nikon is poorly made at all , but for some people where products are manufactured plays a part in the decision process. It would be appreciated if you could include that information in future videos, or mention it in the video description. Thanks again for a great comparison video!
One of the best camera reviews I've ever seen. That's the way it's supposed to be done. If I buy either one of these cameras, I'm gonna get your guide. thx Michael.
I really do want to appreciate the effort you made for the comparison, for these full frame SLR's. And this video helped me a lot to consider the pros & cons on these two Full frames and gave me a in-depth view. Once again thanks a lot Michael.
THIS REVIEW/COMPARISON IS FANTASTIC! But really its so good! You tested Everything on both cameras! Btw, if money and lenses doesnt matter, which one should you choose? D600, 6D, 5D MKII, D700? I shoot landscapes, and portrait. If i choose a camera that can make videos, i would take videos also.
Hi Michael, thanks for a great review! I shoot mainly landscape and I'm already invested in Canon. I own a 60D atm but looking to upgrade to full frame. One thing I've been very annoyed at with the 60D is the very limited dynamic range. Will I be disappointed with the performance of the 6D in this area or is it just "not as good as D600 but still great"? (The D600 looks awesome in this regard!). Can one expect Canon to get better at this in a future 6DMKII? What's the reason they're behind?
Beautiful comparison. Its very usage vased and practical.. More important than MANY MANY technical based comparisons. And adress some very important facts directly.
I own a cropped frame Canon camera and have been practicing for a year now. It is time for me to go for a full frame Camera and I am really confused between Canon 6D and Nikon D 600. I mostly shoot my children running around and still life and landscapes. I have seen many reviews most of them lean towards Nikon D600 but since I am familiar with Canon I can not get myself to accept it. what do you recommend is best for my type of photography?
Using the AF assist of the CANON external flash is a great idea. Do you know if something like the Yongnuo YN-560 II would have AF Assist? Could that the AF assist be used by a NIKON where the built-in AF assist light is prohibited? I noticed the flash did not fire on the CANON during the test with external flash. How do you configure that? FANTASTIC Review!
I just wanted to say that your work on the comparison is simply phenomenal. You covered every possible aspect I care or could thing about and you did it in my opinion in a very professional way. I’m going for the canon one but it was really a no brainer for me since I almost never shoot sport/actions shots and most importantly I have glass for canon. Anyway again thank you for this great shootout comparison
Wow, great video @MichaelTheMentor I am currently facing a dilemma on which to go for. I actually plan to go for the Canon 6D, but released I could go for the Nikon D800. What would you suggest? The Canon 6D or Nikon D800?
Does the HDMI out on the Nikon improve the video output? I don't have the equipment to utilize it yet, but I was wondering if the Moire and aliasing look the same. Great video, btw! You definitely put a lot of work into this.
Mike, great review! I purchased a 6d and couldn't be happier. What I do find ridiculous though is comparing these two cameras simply because Nikon chose to call its camera ENTRY LEVEL. Other than the price, there's nothing entry level about the camera. In my estimation, is a cheaper d800. The Canon on the other hand is truly an entry level, full frame camera. Simplified features for those who don't wanna deal with the learning curve of the d600 or 5d MK III. I
This is a wonderful review, very profoundly. I appreciate the time you got into making this! I'll recommend this to my friends, who might still be struggling over the 6D issues, as I was before watching the video. Now I've ordered one right away. Thanks Michael.
So, how many people who are shooting with the D600 have a process where they go through and automatically scale down their images to the 6Ds resolution? If you are going to print large, are you going to scale down your image first before printing? When you are shooting your image in low light, are you thinking to yourself that you can go ahead and push the ISO an extra two stops because you will just downsize the image later?
Michael, not butt hurt or anything, but you don't have to exit live-view to change aperture on the D600. You can switch it to photo live-view, using the live-view selector thingy, change the aperture, then switch back to video live view. It still sucks, but it is 2 less button presses... but it still sucks.
Much of what is "better" really depends on the person's individual opinion. As I said, the raw banding is at least 1-2 stops better, yes, but someone else might look at the same images and disagree with me, or even say they are better or worse. I can definitely say however, if you shoot a lot of JPEG & video in those ranges, you will definitely see a huge difference, especially at 6400.
Hi Michael, I´m looking to buy my Second camera, I owned a Nikon D90, but I´m looking for a camera that I can shoot good quality videos in low light, what is your recommendation, thanks.
Great review. A couple of things to add though: For those of us who use strobes and shoot on 200mm lenses or longer, the Canon 6D cannot sync flash units with a shutter speed faster than 1/160. Every other modern prosumer DSLR worth considering can sync at least 1/200th (including the Nikon D600). Doesn't sound like much, but it makes a huge difference when you're used to being able to shoot at 1/200th with a flash/transciever. Also for those with less than steady hands and no blessing of IS, this means you won't be within the reciprocal rule when you shoot anything longer than 160mm. This DOES make a difference. Secondly, the 5Dmkiii has a built in anti-aliasing filter which made it look better in that aliasing and moire test. However the compromise is sharpness. Manufacturers actually put in these aliasing filters because aliasing actually adds sharpness to a STILL image (and also to video, but it wasn't meant for that, obviously). But when people discovered they could shoot full-frame HD video on the 5Dmkii, everyone would complain about the aliasing/moire. This was Canon's solution for the 5Dmkiii. But you really do lose sharpness. People (Philip Bloom) says you can go into adobe software and add sharpness and it looks good, but I'm not a fan of adding sharpness in post. It's always better to do things right in the field and THEN come back into Lightroom or Photoshop (or FCP). Thirdly, it would have been cool to see the uncompressed Nikon footage in the dynamic range test and the low-light/high-ISO tests. But since the 6D doesn't have that option and this was a comparison video, that footage probably wouldn't belong in this video. Overall, good video. Seems like you spent a lot of hard work and time into these tests. Keep it up!
11 years on this video is still helpful. Thank you for the time and effort you spent all those years ago. Fantastic video.
So true, I'm literally trying to decide between these two or a D750 😂
Best comparison video by MILES. Truly unparalleled work. Serious Props, Michael!

Good question. I only tested focus speed in low light, so its hard to say what the difference is in good light.
You just changed my decision on my purchase Mike. Thank you so much. I want to shoot landscapes and low light city scenes at night. You are very mistaken, Canon EOS 6D is much worse than Nikon D610, especially for landscape!
There might be a misunderstanding. The D600 wasn't just slow in low light on low contrast targets without it's AF lamp.... it was unable to focus entirely. It did fine on the other 3 tests. If you don't ever turn your AF lamp off, it wont be an issue.
Probably the most helpful review of any camera I've seen on TH-cam. You deserve to be the top of the search bar when someone searches "D600 vs 6D"

Canon EOS 6D Глубина цвета 23,8 Динамический диапазон 12,1 Рабочий диапазон ISO 2340
Даже кроп Никон, ДД и глубина цвета выше, чем у этого Кэнона!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, I am in 50% of this video and if I could I would have hit the like button 10x. This is by far the best review of these cameras. Congrats
Yes, you can do both on the 6D in Live View for both Video and Stills.
This video was an incredible comparison. As a low light 6D user I was happy to see your results. Makes me feel much more comfortable with my choice.
Thank you Mike so much for making these videos! Absolutely love the comparisons you make and tutorials. Saves so much time.
GREAT test results Michael.....thank you so much for taking the time to do it. You think the 6D might have some upcoming updates to correct some of their focusing issues? I know the Mark III did have some updates regarding focusing
The best, detailed and professional video comparison for both cameras!!! Excellent job!!!!
This is simply the BEST side-by-side comparison I've seen thus far of the two cameras. Just impressive. Way to go, Michael.
Impressive comparison, I think it's the best shootout I have ever came across. Keep up the good work, Michael!
One of The best comparison I have seen on TH-cam.
Great job !!!
Thank you for your support Marco!
Hi Michael,
I have one question regarding what you wrote : "D600 is better as an "all round" camera, the 6D excels in low light (wedding photographers are going to love the 6D)."
If we consider the technical tests of DxOLabs we can see that the low light performance of the Nikon D600 is 2980 ISO while the score of the Canon 6D is 2340 ISO.
Fantastic review--I'm eying the 6D and this is the most detailed and interesting (with real life tests) that I've seen. Great work!
In terms of dynamic range and color depth, Nikon D610 leaves all canons far behind!
And also in terms of working ISO, Nikon D610 is higher than Canon EOS 6D.
In general, Nikon D610 scores 94 points, and Canon EOS 6D only 82 points, this is a huge gap!!!
Nikon D610 Color Depth 25.1 Dynamic Range 14.4 Working ISO 2980
Canon EOS 6D Color Depth 23.8 Dynamic Range 12.1 Operating ISO 2340
Even Nikon crops, DD and color depth are higher than this Canon !!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Jack-
Excellent work! I wish all camera comparisons were that thorough and honest.
Depends on who you talk to. I believe they are completely usable in some circumstances.
Hi Michael! Thanks a lot for your work! The amount of time and efforts behind this video is tremendous
Exactly! This is what I was going for, actual use and results, not just a spec sheet read.
Thanks Michael!! I think I'm going with the 6D, Impressed with the low light performance and the low light focusing... nice review by the way! both are great cameras.
Viewfinder only is straightforward, no issues. 5Dii's video compares similarly to the 6D.
The best and very informative review EVER! Keep it up dude.
Micheal, your comparison review is awesome.
It is in full detail and technical comparisons are beyond perfect!
Thanks a lot.
Waiting for your further 'pro' reviews.
I am one more time happy to select Canon 6D again. : )
Your camparison video is fantastic. But anyways - I still cannot decide which way to go :(
Main tasks that my camera would do is:
- Taking pictures and videos of my son participating in Ice Hockey tournaments (relatively low light)
- Taking pictures and videos of my family wakeboarding and kiteboarding
- Taking pictures and videos from trips
- Taking pictures and videos from everyday life outside and inside (relatively low light)
What would be your suggestion for came in my case?
Thanks
If you are shooting weddings (stills only) the 6D is more than plenty. If you are shooting any video, go with the 5Diii.
Both are great for portraits, D600 has better dynamic range which is better for landscapes.
Thanks
Your wonderful style ..I've got a question?Love portrait and landscape photography. Want your advice in the selection of one of Nikon d600 or canon 6d
bar none the most comprehensive 6D review on youtube. kudos and thank you
I'm going to pick up the 6d next month (and yes I'll be picking up your Crash Course video for the 6d)
One piece of info that was missing I thought was where each camera is manufactured.
Thank you. She has her own channel on TH-cam under the name Annie Red.
Nice video Michael, thanks for taking the time to do all this. Am a Canon user, just bought yesterday the Canon 6D, first time suing full frame.
Beautiful comparison. Its very usage vased and practical.. More important than MANY MANY technical based comparisons. And adress some very important facts directly.
The D600 is a better all round camera (minus the oil spots). Pros will LOVE the low ISO noise and low light focusing on the 6D.
which is better for portrait & weeding.. I need to help I am confused .....then I am going to buy camera
Awesome video Michael.
Did you try center focus point of 6D for servo? I wonder if that would change the keeper ratio. Thanks.
A couple of things to add though:
For those of us who use strobes and shoot on 200mm lenses or longer, the Canon 6D cannot sync flash units with a shutter speed faster than 1/160.
Keep it up!
