    Hey John, Its ChaoticLama here. It was a huge surprise to see your name come up as I was literally just watching your videos and pumped up to play a few games after that. Was definitely very nervous in the beginning. I definitely saw the bishop and the diagonal but had a big lapse as I was too focused on getting counterplay down the B file with the rook and queen and couldn't believe it as soon as i let go of the rook. ehh it happens too often... From there it was a downhill battle and i was just trying to come up with counterplay. Dont care what the eval says but about the G pawn move but it was definitely a big looming threat the whole game for me. Thanks for the game and great vid!

      DUDE thanks for the game as well as your thoughts!! It's nerve-wracking to play up so much in rating, especially if you know you'll be in a video 🙂 And ahhh yup, I figured the ...Rb8 move was a mental lapse. Thanks for the game - tough one even with the blunder!

      Loved the game. fighting spirit until the end. I was looking at the threats from you and they weren't trivial even down the exchange!

    Hey John,
    We've met before a couple of times in person, you are awesome. I've told you that you are a positive force in the chess world and I appreciate it. I just want to thank you for posting these long-form rapid type games. I think they are by FAR the most instructional content on TH-cam chess. I am trying to watch all your standard games (I'm only on #50 right now), you have definitely helped me become a much stronger player. Thank you SO MUCH.

    Just watched one of your most recent videos in which you expressed your appreciation for comments. I have watched your videos for years but this is my first time commenting. Just wanted to say thanks. Your style is the most instructive Ive found in the yt chess teaching sphere. You have a gift for walking a lower rated player (like myself) through a higher rated thought process that facilitates learning and doesnt just leave me in the dust trying to piece the logic of an opening or move sequence together myself. Hope all is well and have a great new year!

    John, so glad to see you've been uploading again the last week or so!
    Would you consider doing a game like this with a weaker opponent, then going through the game together? It would be interesting to hear what logic and strategy the weaker players have in comparison to your thought processes and identify where those lines of thinking or not congruent. I would be a willing participant with a rapid rating of ~1750 hehe!
    As always, thanks for the vids!!

  • @DudeTastic13

    John, I love your videos. Opening theories and endgame are quite straight forward and well discussed. But I find the middle game to be the toughest, and it's quite a learning experience to listen to how you build your case towards the middle game. An example would be your dark sq bishop placement this game. I probably would hastily play bD2 without much thought. But like a fortune teller, and for the same reason you're not afraid of the semi open B file, you knew your dark sq bishop would take away that B8 sq from the black rook. I also like your analysis after the game, showing all the "water beneath the sheet of ice" ... it's good to go over those variations, sound or unsound, justified or refuted, just so we can understand the consequences of these moves. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks.

    The 1500 opponent played the opening well. I'm sure they could see an increase in rating if they hone the fundamentals.
    I like the advice on always looking for your opponent's threats even when winning. I know I could use that! Thanks, John!

    • @sprcow
      @sprcow ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is basically what holds me back. Even after 5 years of playing, it's just really hard to stay on top of my opponent's threats while also not losing on time. I'm around 1650 rapid and most of my losses are just super simple tactics I overlooked. Tactics puzzle rating is over 2700, so I can clearly find the tactics, it just takes me too long...

    From your initial comments I thought you might have been considering playing the Goldman variation, 3.Qf3. It has surfaced in quite a few youtube videos over the last year or so, notably by IM Perunovic and GM Naroditsky. The latter was unaware of why it is so named, but I am lucky enough to own a copy of an old booklet on this line by Warren H Goldman, and have been playing it for years. The games are always interesting, and often the second player is on the back foot from the outset, being on unfamiliar territory.

      @JohnBartholomewChess  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. It could be a reason to avoid the capture, but the problem is that retreating the bishop loses time, and it's not sure where my bishop will be effective with Black arranging so many pawns on light squares to restrict it.

      The trick is to play the board, not The Man. Don't even look at the rating. I've drawn and beat titled players by ignoring their rating. I'm low expert. Usually I lose though, just like everybody else, but you can last longer by ignoring the rating.
