Did you know? In 1940 Carson McCullers used this phrase as the title of her famed first novel. In turn, she took the words from a poem called “The Lonely Hunter,” found in the 1896 collection From the Hills of Dream, by the celebrated Scottish poet Fiona Macleod, pen name for William Sharp. It's about a girl who mourns her dead lover and thinks about joining him; here's the third stanza: “Green wind from the green-gold branches, what is the song you bring? What are all songs for me, now, who no more care to sing? Deep in the heart of Summer, sweet is life to me still, But my heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on a lonely hill.”
@@bklynravi I just discovered this band this year - and I've fallen in love with them, their sound, their everything. As soon as I heard that line! Wow! Thank you for sharing this! And the excerpt of the poem - that's simply lovely!! I have her book but have only read snippets. I loved the movie but when I saw it I was so young, still a teenager! I don't think I really understood it but something in it resonated within me, and has always stuck with me. I should rewatch it, I'm sure I'd have a very different take on it now, so many decades later. Maybe it's just the phrase that hits so deep for me, the longing, the yearning: The heart IS a lonely hunter....💔
Well I've got her cane Oh and Big Danny is wasted - He said I'm the sweetest thing You know that he's never tasted Mariposa's singing love songs All in her dark apartment Fourteen floors a'birthin And fourteen floors a'dying Livin' in the city We're just livin' in the city Livin' in the city Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard I'll take you to the stairwell And give you something I can offer You know the heart is not the hopeless The heart is a lonely hunter Hot long summer days... We're just sneakin' by the river Well, I'll lock my dreams away I'll watch the city quiver Livin' in the city We're just livin' in the city We're livin' in the city Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard Gypsy bit the dust You know the shitty hat - it was poisoned You know now everybody wants Just a taste of what we sold him Standing on the roof tops We're just yellin' till the morning All surrounded by the visions Of all who came before them Livin' in the city We're just livin' in the city Oh, livin' in the city Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard Livin' in the city We're just livin' in the city Oh, livin' in the city Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard Oh, it's hard, it's hard, it's hard
This song is just classic, driving in the snow down the highway doing 50mph cause you already seen 3 wreaks and 5 others almost hits. your just smoking your cancer stick and the windows down with the heater cranked up to 3... just makes for a perfect classic moment... or on a nice sunny or cloudy fall afternoon getting stuck in traffic cause people can't merge from 4 lanes to 2 without completely stopping.... that's just living in the city.... and this song helps!!! Great work on this!!!! Video and tune and lyrics and the vocals!
Very nice. But I really loved the version you made in the XPoNential Festival 2017. For both this one and Pa'lante also. It is just perfect. I love your work. Hope to see you in Brazil someday.
Precisely Right bob j!! I understand people that like the 1st album best. So did I at 1st. As the album progresses, I gradually find myself liking it more. If you listen to it as an independent album, not comparing it to the 1st, you will find it fascinating!
Bob J Love this song. She’s talking about living in the city. Just like I do. I must be putting her in a box. Why don’t you enjoy the music and climb down off your soap box? There is nothing wrong with complimenting and/or comparing her to icon artists. I imagine she’d take that as a compliment.
Love your voice, the guitar in this song sorta reminded me of Yo la tengo ( think spelled wrong)..or The Pastels or Pixies..some parts reminded me of piece of those bands..Ya owned this & loved the video..Sending love from New Orleans Louisiana peace ☆♡☆OpaL
Livin in the city, used to be an aspiration. Now it's hard to justify why you'd want to. If the heart is a lonely hunter- try hunting elsewhere. Nice voice.
That echo-chorus, and the lyrics! Heard for the first time today on the radio, and I immediately thought, "this reminds me of when we lived in the Bronx." HFRR's protesty cuss-words stuff isn't my cup of tea, but this is an undeniably great song. CS
I can just feeeeeeeel the radical feminism in this video - gotta have black and white women in it so it's not racist - women only lol - let the other black women sing too so it doesn't become racist IT'S A GOOD SONG THOUGH I'M JUST POINTING SOMETHING OUT THAT I FELT
One of their best songs.
There's a lot of beauty in this.
Never get tired of this wonderful song, or group. Channelling strong 'Cause' by Sixto Rodriguez vibes, which makes it even better.
I can't believe this doesn't have more likes
I love when this rolls up in my autoplay. Thanks, algorithm! Also, more talk about that choreography. As good as the record.
A small portion of Bob Dylan 😍
"the heart is a lonely hunter"
Damn, that´s good.

I heard this song on WXPN last sunday and had to see who had that voice. Not disappointed. Love song and video!!!!!!!!!!
Well I've got her cane
Oh and Big Danny is wasted -
He said I'm the sweetest thing
You know that he's never tasted
Mariposa's singing love songs
All in her dark apartment
Fourteen floors a'birthin
And fourteen floors a'dying
Livin' in the city
We're just livin' in the city
Livin' in the city
Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard
I'll take you to the stairwell
And give you something I can offer
You know the heart is not the hopeless
The heart is a lonely hunter
Hot long summer days...
We're just sneakin' by the river
Well, I'll lock my dreams away
I'll watch the city quiver
Livin' in the city
We're just livin' in the city
We're livin' in the city
Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard
Gypsy bit the dust
You know the shitty hat - it was poisoned
You know now everybody wants
Just a taste of what we sold him
Standing on the roof tops
We're just yellin' till the morning
All surrounded by the visions
Of all who came before them
Livin' in the city
We're just livin' in the city
Oh, livin' in the city
Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard
Livin' in the city
We're just livin' in the city
Oh, livin' in the city
Well it's hard, it's hard, it's hard
Oh, it's hard, it's hard, it's hard

@@HONORTONUMERIC123 Yeah I like the Velvet Underground vibe
Love the song and the video. Like the Carson McCullers reference. She was required reading in NY schools when I went there. I guess she still is, lol.
I love her
So. Much. Joy. 🙌🏽
Very nice. But I really loved the version you made in the XPoNential Festival 2017. For both this one and Pa'lante also. It is just perfect.

This reminded me of Lou Reed in the beginning.
No 1 on my Best of 2017 playlist
I"m in love with this band!
Great music the first that has spoken to me for years! Great voice.. great talent
I am coming to Puerto Rico soon!!! Pa’lante!
STUNNING
This song reminds me of In My Tribe era 10,000 Maniacs
That’s my favorite band of all time and I totally agree. Great call!
WONDERFUL!
Enjoy the music and stop putting people in boxes.

Lloyd Cole influences❤
I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE EXCITED
Amazing! :) Thank you for it !

I love this. Pleasing on so many levels. Is it "her cane" or "hurricane" in the first verse?
"got her a cane"
Cocaine, the song is about selling drugs…
fantastic!
go girrrrrls!
Livin in the city, used to be an aspiration. Now it's hard to justify why you'd want to.
If the heart is a lonely hunter- try hunting elsewhere.
Nice voice.
Wow...impressive! The new Patti Smith
This makes me think of Rodriguez ...
fucking fantastic!!!!!

Frank. Honest.
!!!!
With this long-ass list of credits you don't include the names of the players and singers who back her up on this?
Rickie Lee Jones influence?
Pony Boy patty smith?
A female Lou Reed?
A male Hurray for the Riff Raff?
No, this is a female Alynda Segarra!
I'd rather have the 'countryside'
Paul van Druten same. But hey, I ain't complaining.
Yup....
she sounds like dylan
nick wilson she does not she sounds better than Dylan ever did.
nick wilson. Lou Reed vibes
This isn't sonic R
Tombee 123 Gotta keep hope alive.
Love the music. Video is not for me though.
I like how racially diverse there group is
For such a good song the music video was a bit underwhelming just dancing an pouty poses
sockpuppet much?
Nah...
I can just feeeeeeeel the radical feminism in this video
- gotta have black and white women in it so it's not racist
- women only lol
- let the other black women sing too so it doesn't become racist
IT'S A GOOD SONG THOUGH I'M JUST POINTING SOMETHING OUT THAT I FELT
ah yes the radicalness of black and latina women being in a music video about living in the (new york presumably) city
it's not radical it's reality
The singer is Hispanic/Latin... there are also look to be islanders in the video.
Lets not racially profile. White passable doesn't equal white.
