You were my inspiration for trying to grow my relaxed hair at 70. All was good and covid hit. A year with protive styling and now with 4 inches unstretched, I prefer having relaxed. So, will not do the.big chop. Will get a mild relaxer and continue my growing journey. Thanks for all of your time and tips and continue to be blessed and inspirational.
That is right, and any other "Black women that can grow their hair that long, should always save it, after having that much chopped off? Start their own hair weaving products, since they say not all weave hair is natural hair, some is mixed with lead products and other things, and we all know some of those countries selling all this weave hair is not always natural ingredients? It really is sad what happened to you Seun, . I'm going through the same right now. After nurturing my hair for 4 years, it grew thick and long, and I was 1 inch to waist length until I went to a salon stylist yesterday. I had already detangled my hair when I arrived but through her obvious lack of skill she removed my sections and re- wetted my hair and the washing left it so tangled. She started yanking my hair with what was a step from being a rat tail comb. I told her she was hurting me and that I she should use a wide-tooth comb on my 4c hair but she refused. I tried to leave but she had already done so much damage. She ripped off about 3 inches of my hair. Clumps of my hair were all over the floor and I was so traumatized. To make matters worse everyone in the salon started commenting about it. I left there feeling humiliated, violated and I felt very lesser than. I got home and said nothing. I tied my hair up and I didn't want to look at it. I had to cut so much of the yanked pieces and my hair is now at my bra strap. I'm so happy for these comments because they're making me realise it wasn't my fault and I've learnt never ever to let someone determine my worth like that. And I've also decided never to let anyone else touch my hair.
The same thing happened to me! But the difference is after she started detangling the back of my hair I got up and left! Why this lady try to push me to sit back down! Unhand me! Lol I’m sorry this happened to you. She set me back to a lot of my hair was coming out at the back. And same as you I pre prepped my hair she ain’t have nothing else to do but part and twist my hair 🙄
I agree with you, i've had to transition cos of a scalp issue (wasnt the relaxer) and this pandemic, so seeing my hair dresser wasnt possible but has been really helpful this whole time but i was relaxing cos I wanted to and nothing else. Loved my relaxed hair i'm liking my natural hair (braids is my best friend though lol) and see how this journey goes
I relax but I mostly do my hair up in cornrows. I get a lot of hot flashes and I wear my hair in a way that keeps me comfortable. My hair is very thick and when the roots are natural, I get very hot and sweaty and uncomfortable. Before I grew my hair, I wore it in a short natural for about 25 years and I loved it.
I must be doing something wrong then. Because my hair WILL NOT grow in its natural state. However, when relaxed, it will grow past bra strap length. I love natural but I’m tired of being bald y’all. Lol
I wish for my sistas that they learn that whether they are relaxed or natural that they ARE enough. I’ve been natural for almost 12 years but I don’t think I’m better or more black than my relaxed sistas. Hair is so personal and I think however a sista chooses to wear her hair is HER business.

I say this all the time I use to be super duper pro black in my day and rocked perms (those born in the 70’s and early 80’s should understand) the Afro phase had died down in the 80’s I went back natural in 1998 I was not as deep in my wokeness (more balanced 😁) but if the core of who you are is fake your texture of the hair don’t even matter. True that and it does not always have to mean someone hate their hair, or themselves if they choose to wear their hair straight, or relaxed, curled, perm or natural? People wear their hair to suit them, not society! Not everyone is disliking their hair either? Are just use to it because they had it all their lifes. 2. I don't know why people don't know this, yes you can use products to make hair do the way you want, make it healthy, in some cases make it grow, but some people hair just grow a certain way different than the next person, not everyone hair is going to do the same things? I have a friend that always had that type of hair as to where if she cut it short, it would grow back in six months compared to mine, it would take twice as long to grow back, but never would get that long?
@@desireawinton9745, yep just learn your hair porosity and learn 2 retain the length & fullness and your hair will grow. Porosity determines the products u need 4 your hair. Wash(learn how 2 wash hair properly), properly condition , properly deep condition 1x every week or 2 weeks, learn 2 retain length & fullness, learn hair porosity, take care of your ends & scalp, and boom long healthy hair. There’s probably things I missed but those r the basics.

Sis, I just combed out my locs after 14yrs! And then I cut off another 8inches. Idk what made me do it 🤣 but I'm loving my hair the way it grows out my scalp ❤🙌🏾

@@africanodyssey4805 It's good to know who you are and where you come from and to specify it rather than claiming a color as a nationality. Other nations don't claim colors as their nationality. (Also, i'm not trying to start confrontation either. I just want people to go study and actually find out who they are.) It doesn't just stop at slavery. Our history goes way further back. It just requires reading and searching and you can find we did not always identify as a color nor claim one as our nationality. But others have referred to us by color, different hues or other things instead of the proper name and I guess ignorantly over time we just accepted what others called us and forgot what we were originally.
I think we need to find a solution for black influencers mistreatment. I see it a lot where they are wronged in utterly abhorrent ways. But they are forced to say "I am grateful for the Opportunity " it wasn't an opportunity if it took away from you and left you feeling lesser than. We need to call out these companies using black influencers like slaves.

Why did being natural mean so much to me for Black women? The reason I went natural was after getting really bad chemical burn. I only got relaxed by a hairdresser but my scalp hurt for so long. I thought "this can't be good for me" so never got one again. I had never looked at the ingredients. They are scary! I respect you as a researcher and as my sister. All hair is hard to maintain or it is going to smell, become oily, fallout, etc. No hair is gold - it is just hair. Everything in life takes effect and practice to maintenance - I mean anything. It's just that simple!

I can heavily relate to wanting to grow your hair out to show people that black people can grow hair. That was why I started on my hair journey also because my friends and family were telling me that my hair wasn't going to grow long cause black people just don't grow long hair and yes did I prove them wrong. But after I grew it long, I wasn't excited about it, I didn't love it and I always found myself admiring women with short hair. So I cut my hair and if someone is ignorant enough to think black hair doesn't grow that's their problem not mine
Agreed about longer hair not being all that it's cracked up to be. For me it wasn't about proving anything but rather just feeling like I shouldn't be conforming to societal standards when regarding our hair so I went natural back in 2016. I struggled with natural styles and never truly mastered any technique so I have kept my hair in braids and twists for the last year or two. For whatever reason, I truly believed that longer hair would end my hair woes. I assumed twist/braid out would look better, detangling would be easier and just overall management. As of now, my hair is past my ribs and I can say the grass is not greener. The thought of having to deal with my hair once I remove my protective style actually gives me anxiety. I've been dropping little comments here and there to my friends and family about shaving it off and it's almost like they get offended!

I gave up on salons. I found a good hairdresser and literally only go to them even if it means leaving my city. Some of these hairdressers and their negativity as well as lack of skills kills me. Thanks for always being u.
I agree. I stopped going to hairdressers because a lot of them don’t even know how to take care of black hair and can’t tell you how to grow your hair. Now I have a hair stylist that takes time and cares for my hair. She also doesn’t rip through my hair with a brush! A previous stylist was detangling my natural hair with a brush! ( not a detangling brush) No ma’am. I left that hairdresser and never went back.

Omg so true! One of last times I went to a "hair dresser" was like 10 years ago. I had stopped perming my hair for a few years prior to this visit and I just wanted a wash and flat iron. The hair dresser berated me for not having relaxed haired. Questioned me repeatedly about why I didn't get relaxers and complained non-stop about how difficult not was for her to do my natural hair. Broke a comb and a hair dryer comb attachment in my hair and concluded the visit by telling me she would just get a relaxer if she was me. I was stunned that I was actually about to pay this woman for that abuse she inflicted upon me. I knew that there was nothing wrong with my natural hair, because two other hair stylists in that same salon had slayed my hair no problem in the past, they were just busy that day, so I knew it was all about her ignorance and lack of skills, but it still made me angry and left a sour taste in my mouth. It's very difficult to find a hair dresser who understands natural hair, let alone can style it. I been staying out the salons.

I've gone natural to relax to natural again. I too wanted to prove to people that black girls really can grow long hair! Yes, you can definitely grow hair both ways. Whichever you chose is perfectly fine! I really dislike that people try to shame us for it. I remember crying in the shower when I was transitioning in college 11 years ago. It hurt detangling the two different textures. I agree, if I had to do it again, I would have just cut it off and wore wigs.
Listening to you describe your experience with that hairstylist made me cry... Thank you for telling your story♡ There are so many toxic hairstylists out there that try to make you change everything about yourself. They broke me down for years telling me to dye & straighten my hair because my natural hair didn't quote go with my face. I'm now chemical free, but it's an adjustment- and sometimes I still hear their voices in my head. But I finally found a hairstylist who doesn't tell me to change my hair, & she works with what I have- it's changed my life for the better.

I think it's wonderful that you made the decision to go natural while you are young. I got my first relaxer at the age of eight, and didn't stop relaxing my hair until I was 42 years old. I believe as we get older the hair thins, but it thins even more if were constantly putting chemicals on them. It took me a long time to get my natural hair and scalp in good condition after relaxing for so long.
I started crying with you because I completely understand where you’re coming from in being young and feeling like it was something wrong with me or really thinking I was lacking by not being able to have straight hair… I grew up with relaxers too and just understand you so much. Thank you so much.

I have a love-hate relationship with my natural hair so ive transitioned from relaxed to natural 4 times over the past decade. Im currently transitioning back to natural but this time Im getting sisterlocks (because Im done with high maintenance hair in general). As women we are allowed to change our minds and experiment as much as we want. It is not as serious as people try to make it. As long as you're healthy and taking care of it, it will grow back no matter what you choose, so have fun with it!

@@glamglam8347Maybe yours isnt but my hair most definitely is. Its 4b, long and super thick so I couldn't even think about not combing it unless its in a protective style. Also, maintenance level is subjective and i dont want to do hardly anything to my hair anymore. Ive been wearing it in braids for years so I only have to do it on wash day every 6-8 weeks (and I really dont want to do that). So that's my idea of low maintenance.

i think it’s because a lot of kids grew up hating their own natural hair and forcing their parents to relax their hair. then they push that narrative onto all people with relaxers because that is their experience even though it is not the same for everyone.
@@taliahtaylor4518 I think ur onto something here but personally I also think that many kids(myself) particularly didn't even know what 'natural' hair was.... my mum would just take me to the salon when it was 'due' but I never really questioned the process and just did it so I could roll(perm) my hair cuz I liked it. I was ignorant and if I recall, at the time I didn't even understand the term 'undergrowth' no matter how you explained it to me. I honestly went natural without the intent cuz I hated how short my relaxed hair was and went on a low cut cuz of my impulsive need to start over. That's when I discovered my coils for the first time and fell in love with this whole new dimension my hair was offering me, but I honestly love both sides and wouldn't mind my relaxed hair if it had length or at least the thickness my natural hair gives the illusion of. At the end it all boils down t what makes you happy and what you're comfortable with.

I big chopped my hair 8 months ago and before I did, I binge watched literally all your hair videos because I was so curious about HOW to actually take care of my hair. I started on a clean slate and cutting my damaged ends off really helped with my self esteem. Your videos literally helped me through everything. I started taking my hair down more carefully. This is awesome!!! Like you, I went natural after being relaxed my whole like without seeing my natural hair (I'm 35). I never liked my relaxed hair but felt like I had to. It wasn't as successful as yours, I could not grow it at all, and it was breaking excessively. I was also having really bad scalp issues. When I stopped relaxing, all my problems went away. And the growth, is crazy!!!! I didn't know my hair could grow. Again congratulations on your big chop. I'm a new subscriber, and can't wait to see your journey (since I just did the same 6 months ago).
You showed me that my love of longterm protective styles that I can leave in for 3 months has a place in a journey to grow long healthy hair. You showed me that relaxers were not responsible for my not retaining length but that my stylists and I’s rough handling of my hair were responsible for my excessive breakage. Even armed with this knowledge I recently allowed a stylist to roughly handle my hair and I will have to trim off 1-2 inches of split ends. Stylists can make us feel like we are ignorant to cover their own ignorance on how to do what we ask. Now you know better and will know how to respond quickly . You motivate me. I cannot wait to see you wow us with your progress. Natural hair responds to gentle care just like relaxed hair and the results will amaze you.
I am SO excited to watch your natural hair journey. Your natural hair is BEAUTIFUL. And the great thing is, you can still do protective styling whenever you want to give your natural hair a break. This reminds me of me but in reverse. I went natural because I wanted to make a statement that I was being true to my roots. Literally and figuratively. 😂. I finally relaxed it because I am not my hair. I was so done with that space.
I went natural 4years ago and my hair has put me through so much and now am back to relaxer. Everyone was mad about going natural around 2017 and I joined which I never regret. I've done the big chop and enjoyed my hair for 4 years. I am back to relaxer just this year and again I don't regret it. I think relaxer is form of make up relaxed or not as long as we are enjoying our hair that's enough and being relaxed if u know the reason does not make us less of natural or black.everyone likes short cuts and easier life style n relaxer just makes afro hair more manageable

You know how much you’ve grown when you can’t work hard at something and let it go and start over with no hard feelings and your even that much more awesome when it was your own choice and not forced on you because of outside circumstances where you had no choice.
You have helped me so much grow my own hair and literally made me passionate about my hair. Before I just left it and sooo much of it broke off because I could not handle it being natural. When I found your videos they helped me so much to see relaxer as not some betrayal of my ancestor and my hair has grown soooooooo long just following your simple advice. Thank you so much for that because I think texture in general in the black community is soo complex and controversial and we just put each other down all the time for how we wear our hair but you're always so positive to and helpful to everyone.. And it pissed me off because other races and our OWN genuinely don’t think we can grow our hair past shoulder length . I found you long ago because I started using keratin straighteners due to a shoulder injury. I didn’t feel good about wearing my hair straight while everyone else was discovering their beautiful curls and kinks. You made me feel better about it. My hair was so thick and easy to tangle that I could not handle the constant manipulation. I support your chop to natural. You’re happiness is showing. I’m happy for you.
Not gonna lie, this is very emotional... but not in a sad way like I thought it would be. I'm so happy to see you embracing your natural hair! I think the dark, shiny, curly hair is absolutely beautiful. I quit bleaching, dying, toning, and straightening my hair about a year ago, to embrace the crazy waves, curls, silver and white whatever naturally comes as-is to just be me. Seun, I have been following your channel for a while now because I related to being a Nigerian American with long relaxed hair. At some point throughout my college years, my hair also underwent a lot a stress at the hands of a stylist that didn't know how to care for my hair. After that traumatic experience, I felt less confident because I knew what my hair looked like while healthy and relaxed. Long story short, a month later, I cut all of my hair off till I could see my scalp. I wanted to see me. My curls growing freely from my head unaltered. I wanted to learn to love what naturally existed, not what my others glorified in my hair. Not letting my hair define my identity. I wanted to define beauty for myself. And going natural 4 years ago and doing another big chop recently helped me find my beauty within. I know you'll love your natural too sis! I am rooting for you!

I'm natural and I just did a video thanking you for convincing me to protective style. I refused to protective style the conventional way. I only did stretched wash and goes and I was able to grow it pass my shoulders.. You were so nice about it and shared options, so now I'm doing a protective style journey. And I've chose crochet as my method. Thank you. If I can return the favor now that you are natural, I would say make sure to decide on what natural stretching method you will use now. Being relaxed, as you most know, really helped you retain length. Now you would have to recreate that stretch (as best as possible without damaging your hair) to continue to avoid single strand knots and breakage from detangling. It's fun as you get used to your curl pattern and stuff. Have fun!!! Enjoy your natural hair. If it helps you any, I was over 40 and getting greys when I finally took out my weave and embraced my natural hair. That's why I wasn't ready to go back to fake hair for protective styles. But I'm ok with it now. And as an actress I've had very upsetting things happen related to my hair as well. It really does make you very emotional. I understand. You were my inspiration for trying to grow my relaxed hair at 70. All was good and covid hit. A year with protive styling and now with 4 inches unstretched, I prefer having relaxed. It really is sad what happened to you Seun, . I'm going through the same right now. After nurturing my hair for 4 years, it grew thick and long, and I was 1 inch to waist length until I went to a salon stylist yesterday.
I had already detangled my hair when I arrived but through her obvious lack of skill she removed my sections and re- wetted my hair and the washing left it so tangled.
She started yanking my hair with what was a step from being a rat tail comb. I told her she was hurting me and that I she should use a wide-tooth comb on my 4c hair but she refused. I tried to leave but she had already done so much damage.
She ripped off about 3 inches of my hair. Clumps of my hair were all over the floor and I was so traumatized. To make matters worse everyone in the salon started commenting about it.
I left there feeling humiliated, violated and I felt very lesser than. I got home and said nothing. I tied my hair up and I didn't want to look at it.
I had to cut so much of the yanked pieces and my hair is now at my bra strap. I'm so happy for these comments because they're making me realise it wasn't my fault and I've learnt never ever to let someone determine my worth like that.
And I've also decided never to let anyone else touch my hair.

I agree with you, i've had to transition cos of a scalp issue (wasnt the relaxer) and this pandemic, so seeing my hair dresser wasnt possible but has been really helpful this whole time but i was relaxing cos I wanted to and nothing else. Loved my relaxed hair i'm liking my natural hair (braids is my best friend though lol) and see how this journey goes
I relax but I mostly do my hair up in cornrows. I get a lot of hot flashes and I wear my hair in a way that keeps me comfortable. My hair is very thick and when the roots are natural, I get very hot and sweaty and uncomfortable. Before I grew my hair, I wore it in a short natural for about 25 years and I loved it.

I don't know why people don't know this, yes you can use products to make hair do the way you want, make it healthy, in some cases make it grow, but some people hair just grow a certain way different than the next person, not everyone hair is going to do the same things? I have a friend that always had that type of hair as to where if she cut it short, it would grow back in six months compared to mine, it would take twice as long to grow back, but never would get that long?

@@desireawinton9745, yep just learn your hair porosity and learn 2 retain the length & fullness and your hair will grow. Porosity determines the products u need 4 your hair. Wash(learn how 2 wash hair properly), properly condition , properly deep condition 1x every week or 2 weeks, learn 2 retain length & fullness, learn hair porosity, take care of your ends & scalp, and boom long healthy hair. There’s probably things I missed but those r the basics.

It doesn't just stop at slavery. Our history goes way further back. It just requires reading and searching and you can find we did not always identify as a color nor claim one as our nationality. But others have referred to us by color, different hues or other things instead of the proper name and I guess ignorantly over time we just accepted what others called us and forgot what we were originally.

Why did being natural mean so much to me for Black women? The reason I went natural was after getting really bad chemical burn. I only got relaxed by a hairdresser but my scalp hurt for so long.
I thought "this can't be good for me" so never got one again.
I had never looked at the ingredients. They are scary!

I can heavily relate to wanting to grow your hair out to show people that black people can grow hair. That was why I started on my hair journey also because my friends and family were telling me that my hair wasn't going to grow long cause black people just don't grow long hair and yes did I prove them wrong.
But after I grew it long, I wasn't excited about it, I didn't love it and I always found myself admiring women with short hair. So I cut my hair and if someone is ignorant enough to think black hair doesn't grow that's their problem not mine

Agreed about longer hair not being all that it's cracked up to be. For me it wasn't about proving anything but rather just feeling like I shouldn't be conforming to societal standards when regarding our hair so I went natural back in 2016. I struggled with natural styles and never truly mastered any technique so I have kept my hair in braids and twists for the last year or two.
For whatever reason, I truly believed that longer hair would end my hair woes. I assumed twist/braid out would look better, detangling would be easier and just overall management. As of now, my hair is past my ribs and I can say the grass is not greener. The thought of having to deal with my hair once I remove my protective style actually gives me anxiety. I've been dropping little comments here and there to my friends and family about shaving it off and it's almost like they get offended!

I gave up on salons. I found a good hairdresser and literally only go to them even if it means leaving my city. Some of these hairdressers and their negativity as well as lack of skills kills me. Thanks for always being u.
I agree. I stopped going to hairdressers because a lot of them don’t even know how to take care of black hair and can’t tell you how to grow your hair. Now I have a hair stylist that takes time and cares for my hair. She also doesn’t rip through my hair with a brush! A previous stylist was detangling my natural hair with a brush! ( not a detangling brush) No ma’am. I left that hairdresser and never went back.

Omg so true! One of last times I went to a "hair dresser" was like 10 years ago. I had stopped perming my hair for a few years prior to this visit and I just wanted a wash and flat iron. The hair dresser berated me for not having relaxed haired. Questioned me repeatedly about why I didn't get relaxers and complained non-stop about how difficult not was for her to do my natural hair. Broke a comb and a hair dryer comb attachment in my hair and concluded the visit by telling me she would just get a relaxer if she was me. I was stunned that I was actually about to pay this woman for that abuse she inflicted upon me. I knew that there was nothing wrong with my natural hair, because two other hair stylists in that same salon had slayed my hair no problem in the past, they were just busy that day, so I knew it was all about her ignorance and lack of skills, but it still made me angry and left a sour taste in my mouth. It's very difficult to find a hair dresser who understands natural hair, let alone can style it. I been staying out the salons.

I've gone natural to relax to natural again. I too wanted to prove to people that black girls really can grow long hair! Yes, you can definitely grow hair both ways. I remember crying in the shower when I was transitioning in college 11 years ago. It hurt detangling the two different textures. I agree, if I had to do it again, I would have just cut it off and wore wigs.

There are so many toxic hairstylists out there that try to make you change everything about yourself. They broke me down for years telling me to dye & straighten my hair because my natural hair didn't quote go with my face. I'm now chemical free, but it's an adjustment- and sometimes I still hear their voices in my head. But I finally found a hairstylist who doesn't tell me to change my hair, & she works with what I have- it's changed my life for the better.

I first big chopped in 2016 and I’m telling you, you’re gonna love it here.
I think it's wonderful that you made the decision to go natural while you are young. I got my first relaxer at the age of eight, and didn't stop relaxing my hair until I was 42 years old. I believe as we get older the hair thins, but it thins even more if were constantly putting chemicals on them. It took me a long time to get my natural hair and scalp in good condition after relaxing for so long.

I have a love-hate relationship with my natural hair so ive transitioned from relaxed to natural 4 times over the past decade. Im currently transitioning back to natural but this time Im getting sisterlocks (because Im done with high maintenance hair in general). As women we are allowed to change our minds and experiment as much as we want. It is not as serious as people try to make it. As long as you're healthy and taking care of it, it will grow back no matter what you choose, so have fun with it!
Sister locks are quiet high maintenance, Ive had it all too...currently natural again xxx

Natural hair aint high maintenance. You don't even have to comb it out all day every day like that for you to be able to style it
@@glamglam8347Maybe yours isnt but my hair most definitely is. Its 4b, long and super thick so I couldn't even think about not combing it unless its in a protective style. Also, maintenance level is subjective and i dont want to do hardly anything to my hair anymore. Ive been wearing it in braids for years so I only have to do it on wash day every 6-8 weeks (and I really dont want to do that). So that's my idea of low maintenance.
I was really excited when I big chop my hair a few months. I never thought I would have gone natural, had relaxed hair since I was 3 years old.

i think it’s because a lot of kids grew up hating their own natural hair and forcing their parents to relax their hair. then they push that narrative onto all people with relaxers because that is their experience even though it is not the same for everyone.
@@taliahtaylor4518 I think ur onto something here but personally I also think that many kids(myself) particularly didn't even know what 'natural' hair was.... my mum would just take me to the salon when it was 'due' but I never really questioned the process and just did it so I could roll(perm) my hair cuz I liked it. I was ignorant and if I recall, at the time I didn't even understand the term 'undergrowth' no matter how you explained it to me. I honestly went natural without the intent cuz I hated how short my relaxed hair was and went on a low cut cuz of my impulsive need to start over. That's when I discovered my coils for the first time and fell in love with this whole new dimension my hair was offering me, but I honestly love both sides and wouldn't mind my relaxed hair if it had length or at least the thickness my natural hair gives the illusion of. At the end it all boils down t what makes you happy and what you're comfortable with.

I big chopped my hair 8 months ago and before I did, I binge watched literally all your hair videos because I was so curious about HOW to actually take care of my hair. I started on a clean slate and cutting my damaged ends off really helped with my self esteem. Your videos literally helped me through everything. I started taking my hair down more carefully. You’re so good at what you do and I’m so grateful for all that knowledge.

This is awesome!!! Like you, I went natural after being relaxed my whole like without seeing my natural hair (I'm 35). I never liked my relaxed hair but felt like I had to. It wasn't as successful as yours, I could not grow it at all, and it was breaking excessively. I was also having really bad scalp issues. When I stopped relaxing, all my problems went away. And the growth, is crazy!!!! I didn't know my hair could grow.
Again congratulations on your big chop. I'm a new subscriber, and can't wait to see your journey (since I just did the same 6 months ago).
You showed me that my love of longterm protective styles that I can leave in for 3 months has a place in a journey to grow long healthy hair. You showed me that relaxers were not responsible for my not retaining length but that my stylists and I’s rough handling of my hair were responsible for my excessive breakage. Even armed with this knowledge I recently allowed a stylist to roughly handle my hair and I will have to trim off 1-2 inches of split ends. Stylists can make us feel like we are ignorant to cover their own ignorance on how to do what we ask. Now you know better and will know how to respond quickly . You motivate me. I cannot wait to see you wow us with your progress. Natural hair responds to gentle care just like relaxed hair and the results will amaze you.
I am SO excited to watch your natural hair journey. Your natural hair is BEAUTIFUL. And the great thing is, you can still do protective styling whenever you want to give your natural hair a break. I have a strong feeling in the next couple of videos, your hair will rapidly grow out of nowhere and we will have to refer to this video for comparison. This reminds me of me but in reverse. I went natural because I wanted to make a statement that I was being true to my roots. Literally and figuratively. 😂. I finally relaxed it because I am not my hair. I was so done with that space.

I went natural 4years ago and my hair has put me through so much and now am back to relaxer. Everyone was mad about going natural around 2017 and I joined which I never regret. I've done the big chop and enjoyed my hair for 4 years. I am back to relaxer just this year and again I don't regret it.
I think relaxer is form of make up relaxed or not as long as we are enjoying our hair that's enough and being relaxed if u know the reason does not make us less of natural or black.everyone likes short cuts and easier life style n relaxer just makes afro hair more manageable

You know how much you’ve grown when you can’t work hard at something and let it go and start over with no hard feelings and your even that much more awesome when it was your own choice and not forced on you because of outside circumstances where you had no choice.
You have helped me so much grow my own hair and literally made me passionate about my hair. Before I just left it and sooo much of it broke off because I could not handle it being natural. When I found your videos they helped me so much to see relaxer as not some betrayal of my ancestor and my hair has grown soooooooo long just following your simple advice. Thank you so much for that because I think texture in general in the black community is soo complex and controversial and we just put each other down all the time for how we wear our hair but you're always so positive to and helpful to everyone.. I will always support you and I am excited to see what you'll post next :)

And it pissed me off because other races and our OWN genuinely don’t think we can grow our hair past shoulder length . I had waist length relaxed hair. So I get you. I have been natural for a while now and I am about 6 inches from waist length. If you decide you want to grow it long again in its natural state you definitely can. You have a beautiful’s. And I have picked up and watched a couple of your videos off and on throughout the years. I found you long ago because I started using keratin straighteners due to a shoulder injury. I didn’t feel good about wearing my hair straight while everyone else was discovering their beautiful curls and kinks. You made me feel better about it. My hair was so thick and easy to tangle that I could not handle the constant manipulation. I support your chop to natural. You’re happiness is showing. I’m happy for you.
Not gonna lie, this is very emotional... but not in a sad way like I thought it would be. I'm so happy to see you embracing your natural hair! I think the dark, shiny, curly hair is absolutely beautiful. I quit bleaching, dying, toning, and straightening my hair about a year ago, to embrace the crazy waves, curls, silver and white whatever naturally comes as-is to just be me. Beauty is subjective in society but also with some people on an individual basis. To me, personality and soul is what makes someone truly beautiful. You are a really beautiful, sincere and joyful person with a good heart and infectious charisma... I can't wait to see how your journey progresses! Seun, I have been following your channel for a while now because I related to being a Nigerian American with long relaxed hair. At some point throughout my college years, my hair also underwent a lot a stress at the hands of a stylist that didn't know how to care for my hair. After that traumatic experience, I felt less confident because I knew what my hair looked like while healthy and relaxed. Long story short, a month later, I cut all of my hair off till I could see my scalp. I wanted to see me. My curls growing freely from my head unaltered. I wanted to learn to love what naturally existed, not what my others glorified in my hair. Not letting my hair define my identity. I wanted to define beauty for myself. And going natural 4 years ago and doing another big chop recently helped me find my beauty within. I know you'll love your natural too sis! I am rooting for you!

I'm natural and I just did a video thanking you for convincing me to protective style. I refused to protective style the conventional way. I only did stretched wash and goes and I was able to grow it pass my shoulders.. You were so nice about it and shared options, so now I'm doing a protective style journey. And I've chose crochet as my method. Thank you. If I can return the favor now that you are natural, I would say make sure to decide on what natural stretching method you will use now. Being relaxed, as you most know, really helped you retain length. Now you would have to recreate that stretch (as best as possible without damaging your hair) to continue to avoid single strand knots and breakage from detangling. It's fun as you get used to your curl pattern and stuff. Have fun!!! Enjoy your natural hair. If it helps you any, I was over 40 and getting greys when I finally took out my weave and embraced my natural hair. That's why I wasn't ready to go back to fake hair for protective styles. But I'm ok with it now. And as an actress I've had very upsetting things happen related to my hair as well. It really does make you very emotional. I understand. So, thank you so much for sharing and all you do to help us. God bless you sis :)
