    This is THE best example of good vs evil I have ever seen in movies. The music, the stunts and especially the editing are all in sync. This is Raiders Of the Lost Ark 50 years earlier. The soldiers are relentless in their defense of toyland. The soldier loses its head and still marches on. Brilliant action sequence with crisp long shots. Should be shown in every film school.

    The movie resonates from a child's perspective because we all had to deal with bullies. Stan and Ollie choose to stand up to the bullies, fighting them valiantly with darts. And when the Wooden Soldiers are called into action, we know those those bullies (Barnaby and the Bogeymen) will get their asses kicked.

    One of those true movie magic moments from my childhood and I still get that same thrill ever since; I think it introduced me to march music, and such an exhilarating march it is!
    In 1983, I had the great pleasure to briefly interview actor Henry Brandon, who played the villain Barnaby here for my college paper (you can imagine my surprise to find he was a very lively, much older man, who looked not much different than he did in the '30s). In answer to my question about what he remembered the most from the production, he--very theatrically (of course!)--rested his hand on his chin and after some careful thought, came out with: "Those fuckin' pee-wees of Stan's! I kept getting hit in the face with 'em, and after 19 takes, the finally decided to put one on wire to hit me on the head as scripted. To this day, I think I still have bruises from those suckers!"
    I should note I met him, along with many other Hal Roach veterans at a "Sons of the Desert" stage show at the World Theater in St. Paul--what a memorable night--including the wonderful George "Spanky" McFarland, Mary Ann ( "Don't drink the milk!") Jackson, Tommy "Butch" Bond (who stopped the show with "I Love to Sing-a", a tune he famously sang for a Warner Bros. cartoon and later memorably showed up as a sound byte on "South Park) and last, but not least, June Marlowe--Miss Crabtree herself (I recall thinking at the time, "holy crap! I'm standing here talking to THE Miss Fooking Crabtree!"). When she asked my name to add to her autograph, I glibly added, "It's Michael, but don't call me Michael, call me 'Chubsie-Ubsie'"! 😉). I still have it--she ran a line through my name and wrote in "Chubsie-Ubsie".
    I still hope that one day, a new version of this film will be made -- Tim Burton, I hope you hear me! However, we'll never again have the likes of Stan and Ollie. They were magic, indeed.

    • @anthonylaudati
      @anthonylaudati 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your comment regarding Henry Brandon! There have been three remakes thus far -- the Disney version, a TV special starring Drew Barrymore, and a cartoon version in the late nineties. None of them matched the charm of the original 1934 classic. Personally, I think Tim Burton's tastes are too macabre for "Babes in Toyland". I rather see someone like Sam Raimi take the helm. I thought he did a decent job with "Oz the Great and Powerful". But without Laurel and Hardy, it would probably still be a losing proposition.

    The score, the style, the practical effects (for 1934! Genius!) you can see what's going on and the fact that Toyland was saved by Stan's mistake is brilliant. They don't make fictional entertainment like they used to.

Such a timeless classic. Watching Stan look at the link of sausage when Hardy said "I think Barnaby has a hand in this." Stan looks at the link lol! This battle scene was so stirring. It was the first time I ever saw a bogey man. The scene where Ollie tells the people of Toyland about he, Stanley, Tom Tom and Bo Peep’s encounter with them in Bogeyland , the line, “Half man, half animal!” And then he says in horror, Aahh! THE BOGEYMEN!”
    March Of The Wooden Soldiers/ Babes In Toyland(depending upon your television station presented it on or after the Thanksgiving parades or on Black Friday and during the Christmas season), to me was one of the greatest holiday movies.

    I remember watching this scene as a kid on Thanksgiving in the late 90’s. When it was over, I ran upstairs with my eyes flooded with tears of joy 🥲

    I think Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly would do great in a remake like this one. Would you agree?? God, I hope they do a remake like this one.

      It would be a fun watch, and even though I'm usually skeptical of remakes, I think this is one of those few movies that could really use an update with their talent. I would improve the final scene by figuring out how to keep the soldiers looking as mechanical as possible, that stop motion sequence as they enter the village is one of my favorite scenes in any Laurel and Hardy film. My only problem is watching the soldiers become obviously acted out, but this wasn't an easy scene to pull off in the thirties.

      Joe F Well, it would be amazing if the wooden soldiers were to be fighting against those Exeggutor’s from Pokémon instead of Boogeymen.

    Unbelievable that the actor who plays Barnaby was in his early 20s. His name was Henry Kleinbach and later changed it to Henry Brandon. What a wonderful film this is from when I was a kid to now a 66 year old geeza!!

    It was Stanley who got the order mixed up/ Santa ordered 600 Soldiers at 1ft high however Stanley said it was 100 Soldiers at 6ft high which would save Toy land from Barnaby and the Boogymen. AMEN.

    This movie on Roku is missing the last scene after rocket goes off. Thanks for showing me that the darts landed on Ollie.

    I grew up adoring this movie and always will. If I have one criticism, it's that the Bogeymen shouldn't have had torches. First of all, they're portrayed as primitive creatures and would probably be frightened by fire. Second, the torches might have been used against the wooden soldiers. Fortunately, the Bogeymen weren't clever enough to think of that. The soldiers, along with Stan and Ollie, save the day.
