The most amazing thing about this song is that ONLY five people are doing this song and making it sound like a whole choir!!! And when Mitch starts singing the lyrics he Doesn't BREATH ! Matt and Kevin just blow my mind with the percussion and bass, while Kirstie and Scott build on top of that with all the background notes and it all comes together in a massive musical production. They are EPIC!!
They essentially made a Fugue out of Carol of the Bells. Fugues are an old style of composition dating back to at least the Renaissance era. Bach is probably the most well known composer of fugues. Genius to arrange it like this, not to mention they pull it off to perfection!
Carol of the Bells was PTX's first Christmas video way back in 2012 so I can only imagine how many of times they've performed this song. If you play that first video and compare it to this live performance, the only difference you'll hear is the maturity in their voices. Even Matt, who's only been around for 3 years now, has matured. Every time I watch a performance of this, I just want to scream, "Breathe Mitch, Breathe". However, as we all know Mitch is an alien and doesn't need to breathe.
If you ever get the chance, there's a video where PTX talks about how they did some of the videos way back when, which includes the Carol of the bells. They hiked for about 2 hours, looking for a waterfall, but decided on the spot for the video, they carried all of the equipment, including a generator and just as they finished filming, the generator died, and they had to carry it all back out. They laugh about it now.
on that last line where Matt comes in, you can hear that he trips up for like an instant, and corrects himself. To me that's proof that there is zero offstage "help".
Great Reaction! My favorite part is when the trio break into 3 separate layers on top of each other starting at 7:38. Of course the Matt/ Mitch ending is superb!!! 🔔
That last section is the best, absolutely the best, counter melodies I've EVER heard. How Mitch, Kirstie and Scott can stick to their own parts no matter what the other is singing, when their parts are so similar, is amazing. LOVE this performance (live and recorded).
