I just finished homeschooling my daughter. It can be done! Some days are easier than others but overall it’s so rewarding for both parent and child. I once heard at a conference “The days are long but the years are short” and this is so true. So parents in the thick of it, I encourage you to persevere!

You guys are appreciated. I have a 7 mo and a 3 yo who we are now starting relaxed preschool with. I never wanted to homeschool but as my husband mostly experienced homeschool or horrible public school so he assumed we would keep our kids home and educate them how we saw fit. After some pushback on my end the Lord softened my heart before our first was even born and I've come to understand the most important job I have ever had as a wife and mother. I'm stoked for the secrets to come.

  • @theladyfausta

Homeschooler here! I definitely have some problems with homeschooling and I don't think it's the perfect solution. However, if I end up having kids one day I'm still going to do some form of it with them too.
My problem was partially that I was undiagnosed ADHD so there were struggles I faced that my mom wasn't able to address for me. Just keep in mind that ADHD doesn't always look like the stereotypes and ESPECIALLY in girls it can be hard to detect, so if you suspect your kid has it have them checked out!
Also, since there are areas that homeschooling lacks be diligent in making up for those areas. Make sure your kid gets socialized with a diverse set of people, teach them social cues and niceties, arrange extra-curricular activities that let them meet others with their skills and interests, and help them early on to understand TIME MANAGEMENT AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF GETTING BURIED UNDER A SNOWBALL EFFECT!

Was homeschooled from 1st - 12th grade, went to a Christian university, met my now husband, and I'm currently homeschooling a 4th grader, a 3rd grader, and a 1st grader, and wrangling a 4 year old while nearly 6 months pregnant.
My parents did all of these with us, and it was fantastic. I honestly believe homeschooling contributed immensely to my friendship with my siblings and my parents.
I would also add, not to compare your kid with someone else's. I have a friend with a 5 year old who taught himself to read 2 years ago. Yet my 6 year old is making progress at a snail's pace. They're different kids, with different personalities.
That goes for kids in your own family also! Daughter #1 was the easiest kindergartner ever, loved learning, finished her work quickly and everything clicked right away. Daughter #2 was stubborn, hated school, and took twice as long to get the hang of stuff.
You'd barely know it now, they are nearly equal in their reading skills!

One of the things I was told growing up is "The best way to learn is to teach". So what I'll do is read whatever lesson we're doing to my oldest (he's 8) and then we switch roles. I take on the persona of a character we created named Little Suzy, and he's my teacher. I use my high squeaky voice to ask all kinds of silly questions about the subject we just discussed.
For example, we just learned about social insects yesterday. You know, ants, bees, termites... so "Suzy" asked if they're called "social insects" because they're on social media or they get Social Security numbers. My oldest laughed and said "No, they're called social insects because they live together in large groups with different job roles, like a 'society'."
It might sound silly. And that's because it is. My oldest laughs and laughs at Suzy's antics. But humor is a memory tool. And he'll remember the lessons better if he finds humor in them. And having him explaining it from a teacher's perspective ensures I know he's understood the concept.

I was homeschooled and when I was probably 9, we were learning about Ireland’s potato blight! My mom dressed up like an old Irish lady, put on an accent, and pretended like she was experiencing the potato blight! And I’m 26 and I still remember the potato blight! My mom and I still say “THE POTATOES! No more potatoes” 😂😂😂😂😂 So most likely your son will remember these things when he is older too, both the fun and the facts haha

These are great tips! I’d like to add check out what sort of stuff nearby colleges offer, not only for when your kids are in high school (free college classes in high school anyone?) but also most colleges have loads of free events, lectures, and exhibits. For example, in middle school I went to a day camp run by a women in science club and got to go inside their labs and make batteries and ice cream. Another thing that’s really cool thing is many astronomy departments put on free star gazing nights where they set up high end telescopes and answer questions. The college I currently attend has several barns with cows and horses, and I’m sure if you politely asked they’d be more than happy to show you around.

Yes, yes, yes outsource some subjects to other people who are more qualified or even just more familiar with them. My mom hated English and Biology so she had different teachers for us in highschool: a combination of co-op classes, a retired English teacher, a personal friend who is an author, and college class senior year.

    • @sorelyanlie2784

Yup. My mom literally had my oldest sister teach me to read (I have six siblings and I was in the middlish, so she was pretty overwhelmed at that point). It is honestly one of my favorite memories, it was a bonding experience together, and a great learning experience for her as well (she was in 7th or 8th grade I think at the time).
And then later on when she was out of college and I was in highschool, the same sister tutored me in English and writing.

While I personally don't recommend sending kids to public school in most situations, frankly if that's the circumstances you're already in, you can still apply this information for when your kids ARE home. Ultimately, the home and family is where learning and values are best implemented. Just because _you_ may not handle the formal education but rather the _public school_ system, does not mean that when they come home, learning and personal growth are over for the day! ;)

Second generation homeschooling taking place in my home, we tried public school with our oldest two and lasted all of four months. 🤦‍♀️ unmitigated DISASTER!! Homeschooling may be hard sometimes but my gosh darn near ANYTHING would be better than the crap we dealt with before I put my foot down and pulled them back out. No it is NOT a break!! Newsflash, the amount of time you spend on school related things and homework IS a full homeschool day! Only YOU get a tired, hungry, burned out and grumpy child to work with 100% of the time. You can indeed homeschool your child, in the glorious age of technology and information you have at your fingertips everything you need to teach ALL the things. Add in co-ops and homeschooling groups, online forums, and Facebook groups and you seriously don’t need to worry. Think about this, if you yourself spent 13 or so years in school...shouldn’t you know basic reading and math well enough to teach it back to your own child?? If you don’t feel like you do, why on earth would you want to put THEM in the same system that failed you? The wonderful thing about homeschool is that you can learn right along with your child, there is absolutely no shame and in saying “I don’t know, let’s find out together.” THAT all boils down to the public shaming as behavior control you received in public school growing up, the massive fear that you don’t know what everyone else your age knows? Mhm. Again why would you want that for your own babies? If it is important to you then you will find a way and make the time. Check out the good and the beautiful curriculum for some really awesome and incredibly affordable curriculum! You CAN do this, you won’t regret it, and it is time you can never get back. It’s been interesting to see the massive influx of new homeschooling families and it has shown something that isn’t shocking to me but it IS deeply saddening, the amount of parents who get on the boards and say some remix of this “HELP!!! my fifth grader can’t pass the first grade level assessment, I thought they were doing so well in school and the more I look the more I see they were just being shoved along, how do I fix this?! CAN I fix this?!” 🤦‍♀️ yeah they tried that with my second child, all A’s but when I asked her to replicate what she was doing in school that was new...she couldn’t. When I dug into why it turned out her teacher was giving the answers to any child that struggled. Not helping them learn it, but literally telling them the answers to write down. THAT is not education or learning. It can be fixed!! Truly it can! Take the assessments and use them to meet your child where they are, it is better to go back and give them a strong foundation than to just try shoving them along. Children when treated properly and in a good environment WANT to learn, in fact it is hard to stop them. A lot of homeschooling is giving them the tools and resources and then getting out of their way.
