This is excellent information! It confirms what we all suspected for a long time. And you know damn well those majors and their big artists are going to fight like rabid dogs to keep their oversized piece of the pie. It sounds like if this format continues to trend this way, that some kind of legislative bill may be necessary to reign in their unfair cash in. Similar to payola being outlawed in the past. I realize it didn’t stop the process of payola. They just found other ways to do it. But it is far past time independents get a level playing field. Watch how fast we dominate the industry if that were to truly happen. Thanks for the info Tony. This is good info!
And I think the incremental payouts would be MUCH larger if the majors were actually included in the test, which they weren't. Should be interesting to see what happens when Warner goes live with FPR on Soundcloud.
I happen to be one of the "niche" artists that saw a SC increase from the switch to fan powered royalties. My band's most prominent platform is SC with about 1300+ followers. SC payouts went from $3/mo to $8/mo after the switch. With roughly 8k plays/mo that's roughly netting $.001 per stream now as opposed to $.0004/stream with the old model. So I guess I can make a living now from music😉Thank you SC!
This sounds good, but we should be real that the main stat is that independent artists got 10% more under the fan powered system. For Spotify that will translate to $0.0033 instead of $0.0030 per stream. I would also suspect SoundCloud is a service that has many more ‘indie music’ fans than Spotify, which is a much bigger, mass appeal platform. It’s an interesting debate but I’m just not yet convinced it’s going to radically alter the finances of independent artists. But, if it worked, 10% more would be welcome!
Well, it WAS a very limited test of ONLY artists who owned their own sound recording and publishing. The majors were not involved in the test. And even SO smaller artists benefited. Imagine if Universal, Sony, and Warner all participated. I'd imagine that the incremental revenue to DIY and independent artists would be substantially greater! And now Warner has signed on. Why? Probably because they're the smallest of the majors, and they think they might be able to benefit from some of their earned royalties that are now going to Sony and Universal... Should be interesting to watch.
@@tonyvv I see, well that will be interesting to watch. I will be honest and I couldn't quite understand how the test really worked with only some artists included and others not.
Ok Tony. I'm on sound cloud but am not using their publishing option. I really like their interface with the VU graph . It's simple elegant and intuitive. I love the short song idea. My wedding coordinator used my soundcloud to sell me to her clients. Sound Cloud is a big Yes! Thanks still working on my cd release art. Franklin Russell; Bamboo Room Recording. Thank you Tony for another insightful video. As a future spoken word poet this makes me more aware to follow the indie artist process thus SC is and the such platforms is what I would aim for then the likes of the pro fan based such as Spotify .
Hm! I would have never thought of that - stopped using SoundCloud years ago... Now I should get active again and try this.

Thanks, Tony, for the excellent explanation. Hope springs eternal.
That is a great model from SoundCloud. perhaps motivation for more fan-based royalty streaming service start-ups.

We'll be here when your art is ready... Don't wait too long... holiday selling season is here before you know it.
@@tonyvv Getting closer. I need tech advice I have 15 tracks which filled up a data CDr with 8 MB to spare. Mahalo
Insightful. I’d written SoundCloud off years ago.

There is hope for us!!!!!
To say this is spot on is an understatement!
While I applaud Disc Makers making an effort to help artists, if they really had artists interests first the would be charging less for vinyl.
👍
Thanks, Tony.
Thank you, Tony!
Still a broken bridge ... we can't quit our day jobs.
Ill check it out now. Sounds better than $0.002/stream though
