Notice he does his "own thing"....and that was a central part of the original Bop. 99.9% of Boppers since the late 70's revival dont actually do the Bop but a modernised variant of the 60's dance the Stomp. They all look like they can only do one move and they dance to the beat when it should be to the rhythm.
Agreed CD re doing ones own "thing", you have to be with the music not reacting to it, least thats my thinkng, but then again we learnt by watching others and joining-in, none of this jive school stuff for us lol - this is Mark from Witham Essex, who with his wife Genevieve has been winning jive contests since the late 80s, including 3 or more world champships at VLV back in the 2000s. And a very nice couple too lol. Dunno what it's like these days, but back then there were very few if any Americans at VLV etc who could bop properly or well.
