- How to Apply Estee Lauder Double Wear WITHOUT Looking Cakey!
Estee Lauder Double Wear has been one of my favorite foundations for my combination / oily skin for a long long time. It's tricky to know how to apply full coverage foundation without looking cakey or heavy. You can get really nice medium to full coverage...even light/medium coverage with it....as long as you apply it the right way. I've been asked several times how I apply it to get the nice finish I'm able to achieve with ELDW. It's really not hard! Once you know what to do, it's quick and easy! To get a stunning finish from Doublewear;
1. Put your normal amount of ELDW on the back of your hand
2. Mix in 2 drops of Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair
3. Apply on your face using the EL Powder Foundation brush- or a similar full headed powder foundation brush/ kabuki brush
4. Finish with a barely damp sponge to remove any excess product- this will give a medium coverage, but radiant finish that lasts all day! 😊 I used to be a Beauty Advisor for EL and we used to demo this all of the time! 🥰🥰💋
Hi Dawn, Thanks for chiming in! Since ANR is $72 for 1 oz and adds to the cost of the foundation, maybe an alternative that users may own already could be suggested? I've heard of dry skinned people mixing in a couple of drops of oil, but using a serum is an interesting idea. Do you feel either would work well with ELDW? :)
Stephanie Marie Hey Stephanie, yes the cost of ANR does make it an expensive tip! Any serum that gives a radiant finish would work, but as ELDW is oil free, it does make it counter productive to use an oil, so a serum would probably be more cohesive with the foundation? Xx
The Ordinary has a dropper for $1 that fits perfectly on the Estee Lauder foundation bottle! (for those that want a sanitary application method without spending another $10 just for the pump)
I wish I would've seen this yesterday. 🥴 I bought the stupid pump, and was just thinking this morning, it seems junky for the price. Thanks for the tip, I'll probably still try it!
I don't think beauty chemists and formulators recommend a dropper. It introduces product that has been more oxidized back into the bottle (the severity of oxidation differs between products and formulations). That being said, I don't use pumps myself. I hate the way they can clog. I've tried the dropper trick a few years back when traveling with an empty sample size Caudalie bottle and it was just a mess.
@@hua7222 What method do you use to remove product from the bottle? I see your point about oxidation, but as soon as the product is open & exposed to air, it will begin to oxidize anyway. I figure this way is at least more sanitary without wasting a lot of product. Also, I have traveled with this & had no problems with leaking personally. However, I'm always open to new tricks!

Hi i am a registered nurse and have worn double wear for twenty five years and working in intensive care i don’t have time to touch up my makeup during my shift , so i learnt very early to use a good foundation since i use estee lauder skin care i just bought double wear and its perfection for my working day , my skin always looks flawless and even under a mask my foundation never moves its perfect ! i can firmly recommend this foundation its a lovely product .
Do you apply any powder over top the foundation to set it or just use the foundation alone?
Okay, here is my beauty trick for women with mature skin. I am 62 with combo skin, and oily in the T-Zone. I have huge pores, acne scars (ice-pick scars and pits) and fine lines. I use the traditional Smashbox Primer because it is clear and silicone-like and fills in the pits and pores. Also, because the primer is clear, it does not give me "polka-dot" pores. I add a drop of Paula's Choice Beauty Oil to the foundation and then I apply the foundation with my fingers, massaging it into my skin so that it melts into my pores and pits (instead of skipping over them making them more apparent). After that, I go over my face with a beauty sponge to even it out and pick up any excess foundation. I need to go heavy on the foundation due to my scars, but the oil helps it look radiant and natural. It gives a beautiful finish that looks healthy and plump with just the right amount of radiance. The oil does not affect the wear time nor does it cause the foundation to break up. Even with the oil, the foundation stays put and I don't get oily later in the day. However, I do set it with powder. I use the beauty sponge to press the powder into my skin. This further hides my pores and imperfections. After that, I apply a generous amount of moisturizing setting spray so that the powder melts into my skin. The best moisture spray to use is the Timeless Hyaluronic Acid Matrixyl 3000 Cucumber Spray. I spray on enough to saturate my face, and then I put a fan on until it is dry. The results are AMAZING!!! My skin looks flawless, healthy, plump, radiant (not shiny or oily) it lasts all day.

Have you tried the Tarte Timeless Smoothing Primer? That stuff fills in pits like no other. It is truly incredible how it fills in deep-set piercing scares or old acne pits and pores. Plus it is clear!

I am 70 yrs old and am constantly in search of that one perfect foundation, always hoping I can stop searching and buying so many. I used to use this Double Wear in my 50s and stopped for some reason. I am charged up to try it again. I once loved it and swore by it, so thanks for the ideas and great information. This is my favorite foundation and I have pretty dry skin. These tips are spot on. I do sometimes apply with a brush, but I always go over it with a damp sponge. You're 100% right...a damp sponge is a must with this. I don't even need powder to set.
This has been my holy grail foundation for over 20 years!~ I am 52 and it still gets me! I love watching anyone use this, it is by far the absolute best foundation I have ever tried and I have tried alot!I have normal to slightly dry skin. It can look cakey but it's all about face prep, drinking lots of water and vitamins. When my face does look cakey for whatever reason I have noticed that within an hour of application it settles down and smooths itself out.Thanks for the great video!

I wore this on my wedding day! It’s a must have in my arsenal of foundations. I don’t wear this everyday but I do wear this when I need budge-proof! I also apply the same way-damp sponge. As always, your makeup is gorgeous!❤
This is my go to foundation when I need extra coverage. I’m going in 61 soon but it still work for my skin. I hv oily T-zone & dry towards the parameter of my face. I normally apply thinly on my well prep skin.. tho everything’s less is more for my textured skin..but it works wonders. Love from Malaysia 😍
I apply the foundation exactly like you do, you don’t need much at all. Every time I wear it I get compliments on my skin! It’s crazy. It lasts all day, my go to foundation when I know I won’t be able to touch up my makeup throughout the day.

I was an advanced team make up artist with Estee Lauder for a long time. Loved this video. This is my favorite foundation! We could never use sponges for hygenic reasons but it’s how I apply my own!
I’ve used ELDW for over 15 years and love it. It’s truly the best for coverage. Thanks for the tip about the damp sponge. I did find if I moisturize first helps a great deal.

I've always used a damp sponge with this foundation and think it is by far the best way to apply it. It looks so much more natural that way. So glad to see I'm not the only one who does it that way. Been using this foundation for over 15 years and I absolutely love it!

THANK YOU I kept hearing amazing things about this foundation but it never looked good when I applied it with fingers or kabuki brush. It settled into my pores and looked cakey. Using the moist beauty sponge made a world of difference! I use sunscreen as a base / primer, apply ELDW (I'm also "Dawn), and then L'oreal Lumi Glotion to get that perfect dewy, glowy look. Yay, success!

You will not regret trying it. Make sure you use a primer if you have dry skin like me.

Tips as a representative consultant for Estee Lauder you can also add a few drops of Advanced Night Repair to the DW to give a more dewy hydrated finish, mix 1-2 drops with the foundation. 😊🌷

Love this foundation. Good skin prep and primer helps and only using more where it’s needed. It took a long time for me to try it. So glad I did.
I love that you updated this - I saw the original but nice to have an update. Love Estee Lauder Double Wear - especially for the summer. I am ready to get mine out. In the winter I enjoy the L'Oreal Luminous foundation - only L'Oreal foundation that works for me.
I have many foundations I always go back to double wear. I use Becca back light primer and it makes a huge difference!!
Thanks for the video! I found my perfect shade match with ELDW so I was determined to make it look better than when I first started trying it. I have combo oily skin (early 40's) and it was still coming out a little too dry looking on me even when using a damp sponge to apply. I tried mixing becca first light primer with the foundation and it works great that way! That primer has also been great to mix in with drier formula concealers for under my eyes! Thanks again!

Thankyou! More technique videos would be great. I have grown to love this, despite a rocky start. I do now apply it this way but almost always mix it with a radiance foundation (2/3 EL , 1/3 Radiance). It is amazing.

I absolutely love EL Double Wear, I used it for years! It lasted through classes and concerts and you can sweat all you want, it just won’t move. But gradually started to shift to more sheer coverage foundations as I wanted to have more natural glow skin. I also found that to remove it from your pores you need oily products. I have not used glowing primers or mixing it with other foundations. Great tip! Thank you.
I have used this makeup for over 40 years. Two of the huge benefits for me is how long it lasts and still looks great and it does not transfer. I enjoy watching makeup vlogs and become interested in other foundations but the more I research the newest and latest, I confirm EL is the best for me. I do add a drop of facial oil to the foundation and moisturize before applying w a damp sponge.

I love this foundation. I have a lot of redness in my face. Far too much to handle with concealer. This is the holy grail for me.
My skin is also quite oily and i cant be bothered to do a bunch of touchups all day. This lasts the best of anything else ive used.

I once did like 50 people’s faces in a day with this foundation while working for Estee. It really works for everyone. The official direction for dry skin is to add a drop of ANR, which to my surprise actually works better than oil. I also tried adding a drop of Rose all Day by physicians formula, and got a very pretty luminous finish😆. But I guess if you can’t or don’t know how to hydrate your skin it might actually not work for you, I have very oily skin I will not use a mattifying primer with this. It looks best when I do hydrating toner/serum, moisturizer and a non drying sunscreen.
What's a good sunscreen to wear with this foundation I have oily combo skin with large pores?
I think you'll have to try the combo out yourself to see what works for you. Generally sunscreens made in Asia are less oily than western sunscreens. After applying sunscreen, wait a few minutes for it to be absorb. Then use one ply of tissue to gently blot off any excess oil. To blur my pores I prefer Cover FX's blurring primer more than Tarte's .

I believe that skin prep prior to application of this foundation is key as well as using very little product... This is my holy grail foundation and even though I dabble in other foundations for a time (currently loving Jouer) I always come back to this one... I even mixed the two foundations and it was a great little concoction! ❤

Hi I used double wear for about twenty years it’s bomb proof but I started to add a drop of night repair before changing to perfectionist youth infusing foundation which has a serum already in it , being mature it’s beautiful but I actually if I have a busy day I will wear double wear as yes it stays put exactly where you put it and perfect with a drop or two of night repair the finish is beautiful, I have always used Estée Lauder in fact I started to use it as a teenager all my skin care and makeup all Estée Lauder , I am brand loyal, it’s nice to see you also enjoying also , regards liz
I recently bought Estee Lauder because I wanted that full coverage. I have normal to dry skin and I found that mixing my Laura Mercier luminous foundation in with it works so well for me. I love ELDW! Thanks for the tips. When i was still new to the product i was struggling because everytime I applied it will definitely be cakey even though i'v used a damped sponge.. But when i tried mixing it w/ the ELDW Nude Water Fresh everything change! It's not cakey anymore, super smooth & i love the coverage. It's a bit pricey though but totally worth the money 💞

My skin has gotten dryer so to make Double Wear work I have to prep my skin well and then prime my skin with a moisturizing primer. ELDW mixes beautifully with CYO Lifeproof, Armani Luminous Silk, but my favorite combo with the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind concealer. Stunning!

before I tried this foundation I used beauty blenders with other foundations and I loved the finish. When I tried this foundation, I found that it didn't work for me, I moved to brushes and it took me a while to get that technique on point! I freckrn love this foundation! but I do miss the beauty blender finish. I might try again using a beauty blender because of you. yours looks amazing!!!!
I am also loyal to DW. As I have aged, I noticed that my sunscreen under the foundation helps make it more glowy, which is nice. A light hand and a damp sponge do make all the difference. Great video!

This is my holy grail foundation. I live in hot, humid Florida aka the devil’s bum crack and I need something that will hold up to the weather. It covers and lasts all day without melting off. Great tip to use the damp sponge! Thanks for sharing. 😘🌺

I also like using a brush to apply this foundation. It works great. Good brushes are alittle pricey but they last so long when cleaned properly after each use and does a beautiful job applying this foundation. I use both the brush and sponge sometimes. The sponge works well around my eyes and on my fore head.

I’m one of those that has never tried it, but once I go through a few I have in my drawer, I might check this out. Sounds like something that might suit me more in cooler weather.
Are battling with some melasma and use ELDW mixed with 2 to 3 drops MAC face and body. It allows me to build up to natural looking full coverage without the foundation lifting off. And I don't wear a primer even though I have oily combo skin. Hope this could help some melasma sufferers 💓

The more I try different foundations, the more I appreciate ELDW! It is definitely my most used foundation and like you, have figured out the best way to apply it for my skin - light layers. After figuring out the best method, it turns out I use much less today compared to when I first started using it. I can also experiment with many more looks using this foundation (like highlighted and glowy skin) because my oil doesn’t break through and blush doesn’t oxidize as much. xoxo 🥰

I love this makeup. I been wearing it for like 20 years. One of the best reasons because it stays in place all day. It doesn't rub off on clothes.

I contacted the EL customer service beauty advisor for Double wear foundation to ask them how to give a more sheer coverage and they said to mix with the Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Multi-Recovery Complex, so I will be trying that. And also they said to mix with their Illuminator radiant perfecting primer. So I’ll be trying that as well for a radiant look. Since before when I tried double wear I felt it was too drying. I think I was too heavy handed first off cuz I wasn’t used to high coverage foundation. And also I had chose a color I think was slight off. I’ll be trying the neutral color scheme vs warm since the W is very yellow on me when I’m porcelain fair in the winter. I’m encouraged to try this again because I need Lost lasting , budge proof makeup that actually has pretty good ingredients and no SPF.

Thank you for this video! I love your content. I am extremely fair with a lot of redness and acne scars and also very oily skin and I love mixing my Double Wear with a little Doll 10 TCE Serum foundation and a small dot of Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation. It's my HOLY Grail Cocktail.

You are the person that clued me in to ELDW. Hands down, the BEST foundation for 13+ hour bedside medical-surgical nursing or for any long day social events on my oily skin. Anytime I don't follow this application process/rush application/use too much product, I will look cakey 1/2 way through my day. I have also found I can mix 50/50 with Lancôme teint idole long wear to adjust color, or to get a less velvet finish.

I tried it with Revolution baking oil underneath as a primer WOW it looked stunning…glowy but not greasy and stayed in place very well. I’m glad I persevered.
