Yeah, I just looked it up. It was 2018, so I think that’s the most recent laundry set. It was turquoise and white and came with a blonde Ken; no Barbie in sight.

One thing to add about the Student Teacher Barbie from an actual teacher; in order to graduate with your teaching degree you need to student teach for one, sometimes two, semesters. Student Teacher is not the 'end goal' and it's not something to look down upon. It's a person who is learning to be a teacher. Basically, that Barbie was in college.
That was what I thought too. Being a student teacher shouldn't be seen as a bad thing it is just another step in life and a very real step for teachers.
I can't believe they're mad at Barbie having a dress with her own face on it. Like come on it's iconic. Imagine the confidence that would take. I could never.
I know I saw a cool stylized photo shirt on the back of some dude and when I saw him from the front found out it was him on his own shirt. I was like sir that’s amazing 😂
@@sirlundythetoonbint2247 itd be super creepy if it were like a real woman with a realistic face on her dress, but it being Barbie is certainly less creepy and just a bit camp
Part of me wonders if the reaction to "math class is tough" pushes perfectionism and sees struggling as a flaw rather than a normal part of life. Even if it is a flaw, if barbie is meant to be relatable and a person, she should have flaws. I'm not sure the push back is that healthy.
@@lunarose9 I think it's just that it's always against math. Ngl, I think the fact that math is constantly brought up as "the hardest subject" really can cause like an internal aversion against it. Like I am sure it does influence how you approach it. Math was a little hard for me, because I had a bad teacher, but once I understood it from my dad, I liked it a little better. I feel like if maths weren't always chosen to be portrayed as so hard for everyone, I might have been a bit more optimistic about it. I still to this day say I suck at maths, and I do, because it wasn't taught to me well and I kinda just gave up because I didn't expect anything better. But of course, I would really benefit from it now ^^ anyway, point is, not the worst thing ever, but maybe it would help to not always portray maths as something that drags kids down ^^
Math can absolutely be a difficult subject for a lot of people, but one of the most valuable lessons I ever learned in my college math classes was the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. A fixed mindset assumes that I am either good at something, or I am not. A growth mindset assumes that I may struggle with something now, but I am capable of improving with effort and practice. Difficult subjects are often presented with a fixed mindset, when we really just need to understand that some students need more time with the material, or just a different approach to it entirely.
Also the whole Pokémon on a chainsaw argument to argue against adults likening traditionally child friendly things was pretty rich coming form the same website that publishes articles like “what Pokémon represents your zodiac sign” and markets them to a teen/adult audience. I’m just saying.
Right? Like they aren’t hurting anyone. They’re literally just buying dolls. I’m 14 right now, so I think I’m pretty sure I’m still in an age range where it’s more ‘acceptable’ to like dolls, but I definitely see myself still collecting dolls in the future. Dolls are just fun to have around. I don’t really see dolls as “just toys” because if you look more deeply at them, you can see how much effort went into designing them, all the little details, some dolls have really interesting and unique gimmicks that take a lot of creativity to think of. I don’t think I’ll ever stop liking dolls and I don’t really care bcuz it just makes me happy to have little plastic girls staring into my soul when I go to sleep
@@esotericpince ADULTS! They said ADULTS how did you manage to connect this to gay men? You do know adults can be females right so how could it POSSIBLY be that the stigma around adults collecting dolls could be rooted in homophobia? Do you even think before you type?
I got that midge when my aunts were pregnant because I was scared if her after seeing the movie Alien and Aliens as a young child. I thought they were fixin to die.
I am absolutely amazed by the fact that the author doesn't understand the concept of adult collectors. That really got me. I'm used to my goddaughter being really confused as to why Uncle Raffi doesn't play with his dolls like she does but this person presumably isn't 6 years old. And I fully expected that one Ken to be on this list and was disappointed that he wasn't because I love him so much 😂
even then I am sure a 6 year old can understand what an ornament/ decroation is, and what collecting is too. I totally had a rock collection at that age. Clearly this whole adult who apparently has a writing job has no idea. I also love the ken doll, if I ever actually get the spare time to get my drag king character into reality, "ear ring magic" ken is totally on the list!
lol I googled earring magic ken and read the wiki. that's funny. the fuckin ring ^^ it doesn't matter if it was intentional or not. if it was, good for them, but it may aswell have been just the simplest shape to create in such a tiny sized accessoire. So it's ridiculous that they took it off the shelves bc some people chose to interpret it that way ^^
My basement is filled with collectors since my kids have taken up my space upstairs. Some were ones I got as a kid but most are personal purchases. My husband doesn’t care really. He likes other things but doesn’t comlect. He just sees it as just another item that people collect like pogs when we were kids. People collect soda caps from old bottles. I don’t see the difference either.
I never realized that Barbie was meant to be seen as a teen until I was an adult. I always thought she was an adult, even when I was little. Because she did all the things only adults did.
Barbie has only recently been produced as a teenager. She was a woman - look at the number of careers (and wedding dresses) that she’s had over the years . For me, one of the issues with the pregnant Midge is that Mattel chose a face mold of a teenager rather than an adult.
@@stevieandthebarbies Originally she was a teenager, that's not just a recent development haha, she was marketed as the 'teenage fashion model' when first produced :)
I think the weirdest part of the article, for me, was that the writer seemed completely clueless to the fact that people other than kids might enjoy dolls, but also kind of disregarded the fact that the dolls are primarily aimed at kids. Like, is 'babysitter' a bit of an oddity next to a doctor or a vet? In a vacuum, maybe. But it's not weird at all when you consider that the target audience for that babysitter doll was 9-year-old girls, and odds are pretty good their first job in five-ish years WOULD BE BABYSITTING.
Heck, for much that they have little siblings or younger neighbours, little girls with barbies could already be babysitters. Where I'm from, you can officially be a certified babysitter at 10, so a 9 y/o ? Having a babysitter Barbie is like, one of the most logical thing.
There’s something really questionable about the fact the the writer doesn’t like Barbie saying happy birthday to her boyfriend, thinks it’s weird she owns a kitchen, and thinks babysitting is too low of a career for Barbie. Plus the babysitter sets aren’t bought by kids that want to be babysitters. They’re bought by kids that like playing with baby characters like a baby doll.
Honestly, these websites like The Gamer are pretty stupid for having articles writing by people trying to make "funny" rime-esque information. But some of these are kinda funny.
I had pregnant Midge and she was my favourite doll (until I got Bratz, but as far as Barbies go, Midge was my OG fave). Idk why people are trying to smear her as horrifying and weird, the magnetic belly is genius since, if you don't want to play with the baby, it pops right off and she's just a normal doll. It's the least offensive way to tackle something as normal as pregnancy and considering kids don't grow up in a vacuum where younger kids/babies and pregnant people don't exist, there's really no reason to act as if pregnancy is taboo and kids don't understand it. Plenty of kids discover "babies come from mummy's tummy" ... the doll isn't dispensing any kind of forbidden knowledge and it's not as if kids have to understand the process of a vaginal birth to play with the doll.
Add to that - the pregnant Midge set was one of very few sets that contained (visibly) older dolls. It was basically a must-have if you wanted to have a "mom/dad" role in your make-believe role-play "soap opera level" drama.
@@jennynoelle6782 how was she visibly older? I thought part of the controversy was that the doll came alone (not in a pack ie sans visible husband/partner) and since it looked like any other midge people thought it "encouraged teen pregnancy" There may have been another pregnancy midge I'm not aware of? Edit: I am only partway through the video he may pull up a different doll
"A doll that people collect!? How weird!" Even in video games alone...I can think of a dozen statues, trinkets, and other accessories that serve no purpose to the game whatsoever other than just being a collectable item lol
Looks at my collection of over 80 amiibo figures... Which at least do serve some purpose of getting special items in games, but for a site that talks about games, collectors editions, boxed sets, and figures are so popular in gaming.
Current pregnant teacher here. I think a doll like this would be great for explaining to my very young students what is happening. Pregnancy is part of life. Not sure why some people keep treating it like an adult subject when children are exposed to it on a regular basis. It gives just enough information to the children IMO. Where is baby? Midge's stomach. Where does baby come out? Midge's stomach. How did baby get there? That's not important... But Barbie is there to help.
Pregnancy always made me uncomfortable as a child which is strange as sex was a known factor to me as a child so I knew how they were made I was scared about a child existing in there and having to come out of a woman\pain and complications associated with it. I associated it with the alien/aliens movies I saw as a young child. My mom was medical so I read her txt books and had it explained to me young. I think a toy that demystifies and maybe discusses the more fun parts of pregnancy and infants would be good for children like me. I remember asking how the baby doesn’t drown in there or get squished. How the mom recovers after bleeding so much or can spare nutrients for such a large parasite without dying. I was so excited for my cousins but I was like they do be tapeworms lol 😂
Honestly as a young child I had this illustrated book called "Where do babies come from" that although in simplified terms, explained puberty, pregnancy and lactation very well. It even covered conception in very child friendly language like "when a man and a woman love each other very much, they kiss and hug with their clothes off. The man then puts his penis in the woman's vagina until sperm (covered in the previous pages) comes out.". I must've been around 6 or 7 when I read that and it was so educational, sensible and demystified pregnancy and puberty for me. Learning how procreation happens I think is important too for kids, tho obviously with age appropriate language like the book did.
Elvis met Priscilla when she was just 14 so maybe that's why the wedding set is considered weird. She was 21 during the wedding but probably people are still weirded out about the age gap, and that's fair. Otherwise a lot of these are heavily dramatized.
@@roxassora2706 Him grooming a child into a relationship is your proof. She was 21 when they got married, but only god knows how long has he been dating and engaging in sexual activities with her before that, she could've still be a minor. So many male celebrities are being forgiven for exhibiting ped0 behaviour simply because they are celebrities and male.
My friend who I played dolls with as a kid had the pregnant Midge. I had just learnt what pregnancy was when she got it (from a text book with realistic pictures), and the idea of pregnancy freaked me out, but playing with the doll and including her in the playing/roleplaying made it seem a lot more normal. Not "I want to run out and get pregnant asap!!!" normal like articles always made it seem, just "well I guess it is something that happens in life so no need to be weirded out by it" normal. I've never understood the panic about it.
People just don't understand how kids see these things. I remember when I first learned about pregnancy from an encyclopedia I was horrified because people just didn't talk about this to me. If I had toys that showed it to me instead I'd be much less scared.
@@Jhud69 Yes, I remember being absolutely terrified of the concept. It didn't help that I was the youngest child and hadn't had any other woman close to me in my life get pregnant, so I didn't really have any firsthand concept of it. I think that's what made the doll so beneficial for me, even if it was just a doll it was still a way to humanize the subject in my kid-brain. Toys and stories are so underrated for their ability to help kids understand what they haven't experienced before.
I agree with this. I still use this doll in role play with children when there is a new baby coming into the family. If a child is old enough to ask, they are old enough to get an age-appropriate answer. Pregnant Midge offers one way to have that age-appropriate discussion.
Exactly! My cousin had the doll! I thought it was really neat because I too had just learned about pregnancy because my mom was pregnant with my baby sister. It’s a natural part of life. I for one am very thankful my parents never made it weird or shameful. It’s natural and the miracle of life should be celebrated, not shamed. (And now, at 33, I myself have never had a baby so you can’t say it influenced me to become a teen mom or whatever lol)
I have the Happy Family Midge. She's a really cute doll to redress. I love how the baby fits neatly into the belly with no ghastly horror show. The baby's accessories were just SO TINY!!! I recall someone moaning about how Midge having a baby promoted single motherhood. Never mind Midge canonically marrying Alan back in the 90s with the MOST extravagant wedding sets ever released. Never mind the shiny gold band carefully painted onto her left hand. Never mind her HUSBAND being on the shelf right next to her with their toddler son. Nope, this extremely married lady doll was promoting slutty, slutty single motherhood. This article was clearly written by people who "act their age" which means, as soon as they were done with school, they jumped straight into the joyless drudgery of working 18 hours a day, getting drunk, and sleeping until it was time for work again. MAYBE they squeeze in some stupidly expensive "hobby" on weekends every now and then. (little do they know how much money a fantastic doll collection can eat)
@@sofijones5048 Aaah, so the one I have is from the second round when they put her ring on. They did recall the first ones, didn't they? (side note, every pregnant woman I've ever known winds up taking her rings off during the last trimester...which is where Midge is with a fully developed baby in there)
I have a colonial Barbie nib. A former friend got it for me and called it colonizer Barbie. I think she’s a really funny addition to my collection and a joy to have in class. 8/10
Dude if I had gotten that for Christmas I would have been so happy. I would have first laughed my ass off and immediately wanted to play with her. I loved period dramas and as a girl (now trans man) I always dreamed of dressing up like the 1700s men. Fucking Barbie Washington would have turned the party for me.
I remember I reaaaaally wanted that Barbie doll with the cat and cat litter box. Anything that made her seem more "real". Dream house sets too! With little plates, forks and knives, and we could play pretend all day long.
I actually had/still have a Barbie with the cat playset. It wasn't even until recently that I learned about the colored sand and water squirting the cat does
I definitely had a babysitting sister Skipper set in the late 90s/early 2000s who came with not 1, but 2 babies and a baby carrier. It's weird that people think babysitting isn't an acceptable 'job' for young girls. I babysat well into my early 20s and concurrently worked at a daycare.
Babysitting is definitely a respectable and necessary job! If babysitters didn’t exist, who would care for the career woman’s baby? She’d have no time for a career and family without “the help.” :p
A: That sweater is giving me life and I am legit letting my entire family know how much I want one for Yule here. B: Adult collectors have been around since before Barbie existed. My BELOVED doll mentor, Dorothy, left me her collection when she died in 2001 at the well past doll playing age of 91. I will forever miss her and be grateful to her love and her guidance. C: Before I get into my rant here I would like to nip in the bud any "Well that's just them being woke leftists" comments. I am the "woke" leftist. Can we just take a step back and focus on the absolute vitriol spewed onto any woman who had the AUDACITY to choose motherhood and childcare in this entire rage bait hit piece? Just, holy shit, wow. As a college educated woman that chose motherhood and to *GASP* stay at home with my kids as they grew up. It is hard, it is thankless, and you regularly have assholes like this article's author shitting on you for making a decision they simply _would never!_ Didn't I want to be a PRODUCTIVE member of society. Women are criticized for breathing. It’s kind of subjective to the individual. A woman not interested in marriage or children is criticized for being “selfish” and told they’ll regret it later. A woman staying home with her family isn’t “a productive member of society” and will regret it later because they’re not building a career. Wherever you fall there’s criticism unless you somehow manage to show the world how impressively perfect you are at walking the line between the two. That’s a waste of energy so just do what makes you happiest ladies 💕
@@dorkinwithdolls1425 Pretty much! I’m disabled so I wanna speak about my personal experience with Becky and the more recent disabled dolls! For a little bit of backstory I have a collagen disorder which affects literally everything in your body since collagen literally helps make up everything in your body. But for me it’s mainly the bones, organs, muscles, and necessary nerves. I’m 22 and have had 18 extensive orthopedic surgeries and I’ve broken a bone over 300+ times. When I was younger I was determined to walk because my father who gave me the condition didn’t and I wanted to be different. So I used a walker and the occasional rental wheelchair when I had a broken bone for 11 years of my life. When I got to middle school I took a hard look at myself and made the decision that I would have more freedom and be able to keep up with my peers and friends better if I started using a wheelchair. I’ve been in one ever since and it’s definitely the best decision I’ve ever made even now as a 22 year old. But anyways back to Barbie’s! My mother had me later in life. So I was around 9-10 years old when I was helping her sort through all her Barbie’s she had collected over the years. She pulled out the original first ever Becky and immediately showed me! I squealed so loud! I was so excited that a Barbie was using a wheelchair. Thankfully my mother had two of the original Becky so I was given and able to open and play with one of them. It made me so happy. From then I distinctly looked for Barbie’s with disabilities or who used wheelchairs. I was 18-19 when Barbie started becoming more inclusive and making dolls with wheelchairs or hearing aids a normal thing. During the first months of the pandemic I couldn’t even go outside unmasked. Since I’m severely imuno-compromised. My mother had found one of the newer Barbie’s in a wheelchair on Amazon. She knew I needed something to cheer me up so she ordered it. She snuck in my room while I was showering before a zoom class one day and put her box on my bed. I was so happy. It was like I was 9-10 years old again seeing Becky for the first time. In early 2021 I was playing Barbie’s with my cousins kid who I call my “niece” since I’m an only child. I brought over the newest wheelchair barbie and she didn’t fit into my nieces dream house at all! It was frustrating because I was like we finally got more disabled representation but they didn’t even think the big accessories through! So when I found out a couple months ago that the dream houses and play sets are accessible it definitely makes me hopeful that Barbie is listening and taking notes from the disabled community to create a more inclusive brand.
I also inherited a collagen issue from my dad, but I'm still getting it diagnosed, likely some form of EDS. Most of my issues are with bones not staying in place, and when something happens to me, it takes much longer to heal (it took months to heal from wisdom tooth extraction instead of the usually few weeks, but I needed that done). I personally don't have any mobility aids as such (I wear compression socks for support and circulation, but they're not obvious most of the time), but when I was in high school, I remember classmates who went to the school specifically because the high school classrooms were all on one level with no stairs needed. Crutches, canes, and wheelchairs weren't that uncommon. It was nice to see some representation through dolls, toys, and other things that people are diverse and don't all have the same abilities. I will say that the older playsets not being compatible is a more accurate representation of real life, as so many buildings and institutions aren't accessible or friendly to those with various conditions that need a bit more help. I for one need to sit down a lot more than others. I get dizzy if I stand for too long, and when the pandemic prompted open areas to remove or block seating, I suffered. I had to sit on the floor full of dirt, or walk even farther to nearly collapse on a park bench. It is nice to see changes, and hopefully things will improve for humans as well as dolls.
@@joylox Oh wow! I would recommend possibly looking into hyper mobile elher Danlos syndrome! It sounds like your symptoms are a lot like that! Yeah the old dolls definitely do show the accuracy of not everything following the ADA. Since the ADA wasn’t signed into law until 1990. And even now it’s super easy to be declared “historic building” so they don’t have to follow the accommodations they need to legally have per the ada.
I loved Becky as a kid! When I was a toddler (2004-ish) and my mom learned I was going to be in a wheelchair, she bought me a second hand School Photographer Becky. I still have her along with a modern wheelchair Barbie and the Paralympic Becky.
I was in a wheelchair when I was 11 due to cancer of the spine. I loved the idea of Becky but sadly we couldn't find her anywhere 😢 Glad to see she was there for some of you when you needed her 😊💖
I’m old enough to be your grandmother and accidentally came across your channel while searching “dolls”. I’m now a subscriber and truly enjoyed this video. I got my first Barbie when I was ten and fell in love. She’s iconic, classic, fun and eternally collectible. My mother, me and my daughter were all enamored with her….. I enjoyed your fact checking, your sense of humor and your eloquence. 👍🏻🌹👍🏻
I love all these "hot takes" that are just "Yeah well Barbie may be a genius scientist, astronaut, famous musician, presidential candidate, and computer scientist, BUT she also owns and uses a dishwasher! She is setting feminism back 500 years!" I actually really like that Barbie has playsets that are more "everyday" than just all her careers. Kids, after all, often want to reenact everyday situations in play, which includes chores, babysitting and all that.
I saw The Birds Barbie in a doll museum and instantly was like "I need that." Then I saw the ebay prices, which were especially painful given that in the museum she still had her price sticker: on sale for $15. I figured she'd have to come down in price eventually on ebay because there were a ton of listings, but then my husband got her for my birthday anyway.... I love her, want to unbox her, but also the box is really cool so I haven't done it yet.
The Birds has always been my all time favorite horror movie since I first watched it with my grandma as a young kid!! So of course I needed to have that Barbie as soon as I knew it was out in the world..... That being years after it was actually released!! That being said I had to get it via eBay.. I got it at a decent price but I was constantly checking on eBay. I did loose that in a house fire ... So I had to find a second one to replace the one lost. Anyway I got it again at a decent price in eBay but it took some time!! So long story short.... Just keep your eyes open and keep checking eBay etc.... And you might come across one at a decent price !!! And yes I agree the box is really awesome and adds to the overall look and feel of the doll!!!
I have two copies of The Birds!!!! One mint in box and one that I purchased on eBay not in a box and missing her shoes. Ignoring the weirdness of it being associated with the film, the doll has a great costume - one of the best 1960s suits that you could ask for at this scale. Fabric, design and construction are perfect and are what makes the doll a collector’s item.
I've been a Barbie aficionado for around 42 years now, ever since I was 4 years old. Even when I became an adult I followed the news on all things Barbie. I was 21 years old when the Oreo Barbie was released and I remember there being a little bit of buzz about the name and how it was a derogatory slur toward us black women. But I swear I've heard and read way more angry think pieces about it in the last few years then I ever heard then. Yea some people were upset but I remember even then it was people being upset on our behalf as a opposed to actual black women being upset. Some were but it's more modern people looking back and getting upset instead of people from back then.
I was also 21 when Oreo Barbie was released. I was heavily into collecting Barbies at that time, and I do not recall Oreo Barbie being an issue. Once everyone saw the dolls and that they were advertising Oreo cookies, it seemed like no one cared. At that time, there were a lot of advertisement-type dolls: Little Debbie Barbie, Disney World Barbie, Kool-Aid Barbie -- so when you put that in context, there being an Oreo Barbie didn't seem strange. Now looking back at the name by herself, it does seem bizarre that they would choose to pair up with Oreo and make an African American doll.
@@Starshyne9 yea, I don't remember it being a super big deal. It wasn't weird that they used a black Barbie because they also have a white one. That was during the time that almost every white Barbie they made, they would make a black version too. I remember people saying something about the black one, but more in a wow, that's crazy and ironic way then a oh I'm so offended way. Most people laughed at it and that was it.
When I was a kid I remember hearing of the Oreo Barbie debacle, maybe from parents or the news? But, I only ever saw the white version of the doll in stores. So child me was very very confused.
To quote the Little Prince: “Grown ups are certainly very odd.” Like I was maybe 5 and I could tell Midge was a grown adult compared to a Stacie or a Skipper. My child mind never went to those places that this article infers. Like I would have loved to have that washer set for my doll so my doll wasn’t stuck with using her sink to do the cleaning! Also Barbie is just getting her chores done on her one day off from her 400 jobs- give her a break! (Also one could argue getting out of bed and doing the dishes or laundry is a big accomplishment in itself some days) I suppose that’s what happens when “grown ups” have a fictional woman figure that can’t talk back.
I had the kissing Barbie. She also came with a lipstick stamper and made smoochy noises when you pressed the button on her back. The overlay on the dress was incredibly fragile from what I remember. It snagged very easily.
I had the pregnancy Midge too, which I think I received when my mom got pregnant with my sister (I was young and don't remember clearly but the timeline matches up) and it always makes me laugh when people act all horrified about it. I remember just messing around with attaching and unattaching her belly because I liked the feeling of the magnet. As I mentioned, I don't remember much at the time if it helped me deal with what my family was going through but like.... it's totally not weird to make a toy that gets kids familiar with something that very well could happen in their own families.
I said “what about Lawn Darts” as soon as you said number 3, I love how we’re on the same page like “no there’s definitely worse and weirder toys that came out for kids back then”
I still think the “don’t eat” is probably a reference to the fact that DOLLS DON’T EAT! I’m pretty sure it was meant as a dumb little joke and not a way to encourage young kids to develop EDs. I am really sorry if that happened though, that would be awful
I had the barbie and tanner set and honestly I thought the article would mention the magnet choking hazard thing lol. Though ironically the tanner in my playset was fed a barbie earring and never ate again.
The weirdest Barbie I owned was an Olympic gymnast Barbie. She had multiple points of articulation which was so novel HOWEVER the joints would pop apart with too much pressure. But don’t worry, she had a fully body leotard with leggings and sleeves so all the loose body parts were kept together and I could pop her back together periodically😂
My older sister had one of those...I tried to play with it unsupervised and destroyed her legs on accident. We later stuffed her mangled legs into a fabric mermaid tail and she became mermaid Barbie.
The energy of performative hatred the author has for "Happy Birthday Ken" Barbie and outright lie that they've never been a couple is really funny when later down the list we have literal boxart of Barbie smooching Ken.
Miss Mojo just made a video about the most "unhinged barbies", using a majority of the dolls on this list, down to the Tippi Hedren Birds doll. Good to know the content farms are keeping it as fresh and original as ever.
I was given the pregnant Midge doll when my little sister was born and it lead me to the misconception that women's tummies were chainsawed off when the baby was born which terrified me 😅
I had a wheelchair Becky as a kid and remember the situation of the doors of my pink Victorian Barbie dream house. The bottom door didn't fit but the balcony door did because it was a bigger opening, so what I did was I made a ramp out of cardboard and put it on the balcony so she can go in the house. 😁
this video did amazing things for my anxiety 😭 "it's normal for adults to collect things and have hobbies..." my skin is clear, my crops are watered, my shame is dissolved, i also had the barbie and tanner set when it first came out!! it was one of my absolute favorites, i loved barbie's articulated elbows and sneakers and i loved that tanner could eat things lol. i made her eat tic tacs all the time.
Honestly, I grew up with the midge doll, she came out at the same time my mom was pregnant with my younger brother so I got her for my birthday. I was 5 and it was an easy way to explain what was happening in my life. Lots of kids have siblings idk why it’s so weird
5:32 I wonder if it's because the photo is kinda oversaturated - making her skin look orange, which I would assume more would be self-tanner, but the article thinks is over-tanned. Might have been bad faith, might have been a mistake on the original writer's part (whoever first put these together)
I feel like the babysitter Barbie would not be seen as one of her careers, but because the kids playing with her know that they may be able to be a babysitter at age 11 or 12, as well as being baby-sat themselves, and want to play-act it out to have fun with the role.
I actually had the not-Happy Family Midge doll that's always shown in these articles when I was a kid! She's pregnant with twin boys and her her belly bump clicked into place with tiny plastic pegs instead of magnets. She came with the ugliest hospital gown you can imagine, her belly bump was uncannily flat when you reversed it to make her not pregnant, and I thought she was pretty low quality even at age 5 or 6. My parents got her for me after my mom got pregnant with my sister. I dont remember her being all that educational since my parents had already explained childbirth to me but I did love her weird little shriveled potato babies.
We had the Happy Family Midge growing up because my mom was a midwife/RN and loved to get us that kind of stuff. I loved taking the baby out and trying to fut shoes or clothes in there, plus the magnetic belly slid to fit over the doll and was super fun to fidget with. My mom raised some really weird and dark daughters and we loved the weirdness of that doll. 😂❤
it is funny that an gaming article website including pokemon, where one of its largest communities focus on collecting trading cards meant for a kids game, criticize the barbie collectibles for "not being for kids" you can always rely on game journalists to be out of touch with nerd culture!
Im honestly not very much of a barbie person but there’s this thrift store owned by an animal shelter i volunteer at and they have SO MANY 80s-90s barbies. I bought one and i’m volunteering again this weekend and im buying another one of course. I bought Chic Barbie! i love her so much. i have so many dolls mostly porcelain, cabbage patch, vintage plastic ones,i started collecting monster high recently, and im gonna try collecting some of the barbies from the thrift store. they’re all in pretty pink boxes and i can’t help myself!
Those dolls wold be bought up in no time around my neck of the woods you cannot find them anywhere around here or places that have collector dolls for sale at maybe a convention center.
Maybe you're aware, (and I'm on ambien so please don't take any of my comments seriously - and I might comment a few times sry), but I think the phrase "'Happy birthday, Ken' Barbie" could be read as one of those situations where a lover presents themselves as a birthday gift, implying that the birthday boy/girl/other will be able to do whatever they want with the lover's body. Like, sticking a bow on yourself and saying "I'm your present this year." Also one small part of the reason for the infamous Folger's commercial. I think the way that barbie's dress matches the wrapped present, with the same bow on her waist, could unintentionally evoke that image in adults - although that is on the adults with dirty minds, not the doll, lol.
man... i was really hoping we would get some actual weird dolls :/ i thought the midge one that grew up was kinda unusual but i think i had heard of the bratz with a similar gimmick back when i was a kid the pregnant barbie (i know its midge, but i actually had the bootleg doll shown in the picture, the one on the left! i remember the crappy quality hair and all) i actually had! and i really liked playing with it, it was really entertaining bc the one i had u couldnt remove the belly, you just flicked a sort of little door on her belly to the side where you took out the baby. like a fridge door. also the baby was super cute and detailed, and it was honestly useful to make extra use of the belly to store things like tictacs or secret messages or coins. it didnt make being pregnant look fun or nightmarish, it made it look like a normal fact of life and like another doll with a gimmick u could spend some time with before using the doll as a regular doll
"Video games can be enjoyd by everyone. And action figures can be collected by adults. But Barbie, and other fashion dolls, can't have adult colecters, it's just for children, and children only" this news website probably.
Justice for Happy Family Midge. She doesn’t deserve any of the scorn she get. Midge and her family were my pride and joy as a child. The grandparents and their house were the highlight of my childhood doll stories
Omg YES the house was one of the best play sets I had as a kid! And I loved the grandparents because I finally had some older dolls to put in my doll families!
@@mariajimenafigueroa233 love how we can almost always trace controversies back to just parents or adults in general being criminally uninformed about the most obvious things ever
Number 15 - yeah, when the tattooed Tokidoki Barbie rolled around, a lot of parents also complained because they thought the tattoos would influence kids badly...again, an adult collector's Barbie, but since when did that mattered...I remember wanting Happy Family Midge when she came out. While I never got it, I still can't understand what's all the commotion... PS: This author has such problems with adults collecting dolls, probably never laid eyes on a Living Dead Doll or Bleeding Edge Goth...
Ok as someone who has two people close to them studying early childhood education, I HATE how this article trivializes teachers. To teach, you need to pass so many tests, take years of studies including extensive studies on child psychology, and for STUDENT TEACHING? You need to work a part time job, learn while doing it, and you don’t get paid, you pay to do it! But sure. It’s sooo lame that Barbie takes care of kids or does student teaching.
Istg there could be a game with these articles where you take a drink every time they mistake a head/body mould copyright date for a production year, fail to understand the difference between collector and play line, criticise Barbie for doing anything stereotypically feminine, or just confidently state blatant misinformation that would be avoided by 2 minutes of googling... also, I would love a Miss Havisham Barbie. And a Pokemon chainsaw
I think I had a pregnant Barbie growing up? Instead of being a magnet, there was a button you pressed that rotated the belly away so the baby could pop out. Considering I wasn't allowed to have a lot of Barbies growing up, this one must not have stirred up too much controversy. I remember being FACINATED with her though! I thought the belly gimic was so cool
Thank you for this. I am admin in doll FB group and I get so angry when people share articles like that in the group and don't understand why it is a problem!
The Happy Family line came out when I was four and my favorite show was A Baby Story on TLC, I was obsessed with the doll and she was my favorite till I lost her. It was amazing, I would watch the show and play with the doll and reenact what I saw and I fell in love with every single part. I’m now 24 and a Birth Doula so I thank Mattel for helping me find my dream job at such a young age🤎
I had one of the dog food/poop sets as a kid and even as a child my sister and I always joked about the poop concept! Especially because we had another similar dog without that gimmick
I have the George Washington Barbie and she's one of my favorites! Barbie doing male drag - completely unique in Barbie history. I got her in DuPont Circle on my first visit to Washington DC, so she's also an awesome and very appropriate souvenir!
I had Queen Amidala from Star Wars as a Barbie... still not sure if it was an actual Barbie But I loved her, you could take off her huge hairpiece!! Wish I knew where she is now...
I'm not the most knowledgeable person regarding dolls, but I'm a huge Padme fan and I didn't even know she had a doll! Also, just looked her up a bit and there *is* a Queen Amidala Collection made by Hasbro, with 6 different outfits and good bunch of accesories for each one!
I got a grow up Skipper doll for Christmas when I was a kid and I thought she was so cool. As an adult, remembering her was like remembering a fever dream. Surely a doll like that had never existed!
I had the Barbie and Tanner set as a kid and at the time I found the “poop” feature to be kind of funny but not especially strange or gross. It added to the roleplay of taking care of a “real pet”. I feel like adults overthink these things too much and don’t give kid’s enough credit. If anything the biggest problem with the set is that the little metal pellets would often scatter and were easy to lose
Those sci-fi royalty dolls and Haunted Beauty line are just excellent, up there with the Bob Mackie editions like Queen of Hearts and Golden Legacy. I love how the Tippi Hedren Barbie still has to look pretty, so instead of frightened over being attacked by birds, she just looks inconvenienced. If only others had been released in the same theme though, like other characters in thrillers or horror. Barbie Bride of Frankenstein? Barbie Leave Her to Heaven? Yes, please!
Omg! You are such a riot!! I’m still giggling about the “Triscut” Barbie comment and “my plastic women and I”. Needed the fun look at life today and how we all can overthink and over complicate things that are created to help us have more joy. Thanks for your honest and enjoyable view today!
I just ordered the 1980s Colonial Barbie for my mom. She's not a Barbie collector but it's a family inside joke so I thought I would make her 80th Christmas a bit cheerier.
I don't think people realize that saying that barbies shouldn't have washers or be baby sitters sounds chronically online. If the goal of dolls for children is for them to play and act out scenarios, then having play sets that align with that makes sense. Honestly it borders on misogyny to say barbie is any less of a woman for having/doing these things.
You have such a a great understated sense of humor haha. I always look forward to what you have to say, you make an already interesting topic so much more fun.
Maybe I'm reaching but there's a weird amount of hatred in this article toward traditionally feminine jobs and activities like saying it's weird that Barbie is a student teacherr when that's a real thing you have to be before you became an actual teacher or basically saying that babysitting is demeaning when that's an actual job that many teenagers actually do. I just find it all very, very weird that this article just straight decides that traditionally feminine things are bad.
I actually had the remake of the tattoo barbie in the 90s (Or what i'm assuming is a remake. They did have one in the 90s), and i also wanted the dog pooping barbie thing, as well as several other of those weird pooping....You know, the 1990s had a weird fascination with animal toys and bodily waste. They even had some dolls that would pee in diapers i think, it was...I think you unlocked a memory i had blocked out... As a black chick in her 30s, I personally dont find anything wrong with the oreo barbie, as you said they made a white one as well. I think that they probably should have maybe done some other cookie promotions. Oreo is a very popular cookie, and I can see why they would have chosen that over Nutter Butter lol. Now, if they came out with an animal line barbie, and had the black barbie as a raccoon, THAT, would be an issue lol (however, as someone that's been addressed in that way before, i would actually, with very little guilt, buy it)
I haven't been into Barbies for many years, but those Space Goddess Barbies are spectacular and I kind of want one to have on display with all my other art 😻
Your Barbie sweater is so cute!! 😃 I remember my little sister had a pregnant Barbie doll and she was IN LOVE with it. She thought a pregnant Barbie was the cutest thing ever, and I thought it was cool too.
Barbie’s duality unmatched, running for president AND owning a dishwasher we stan a multifaceted queen
too bad her quality is absolute dog shit now 💔
Right? Everyone should be able to take care of themselves. We should be getting on Mattel for not making a ken version.
Ken might not have had a dishwasher, idk, but I’m pretty sure the last washing machine and drier set came a Ken instead of a Barbie.
@@charissabihl1731 oh! Then props to Mattel

The Teacher outfit was meant to go with Skipper's school uniform both meant to go with Skipper's cardboard school playset, which i have .
Student teacher barbie feels like a great graduation gift for people student teaching actually
That was what I thought too. Being a student teacher shouldn't be seen as a bad thing it is just another step in life and a very real step for teachers.
In line with your comment on Barbie being in college, that outfit came out within a year or so of the Barbie Goes to College playset.
Exactly!!
I can't believe they're mad at Barbie having a dress with her own face on it. Like come on it's iconic. Imagine the confidence that would take. I could never.

As a woman with a Bachelors degree in Mathematics, math class IS tough. 😆
My son has a BA in Advanced Math and he loved it! He has a very high IQ so that makes it very understandable to why he likes it.
But of course, I would really benefit from it now ^^
anyway, point is, not the worst thing ever, but maybe it would help to not always portray maths as something that drags kids down ^^
Math can absolutely be a difficult subject for a lot of people, but one of the most valuable lessons I ever learned in my college math classes was the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
@@sherylhutton138 ok cool? Clearly she likes it too that doesn’t make math not hard.
i dont understand how adults collecting dolls is such an outlandish concept to some people?? is it not just the same as collecting anything else??
probably rooted in homophobia idk. my first exposure to adult collectors was from the simpsons with mr smithers

My mom actually bought this when she was pregnant with my sister to basically explain what it was.
I am absolutely amazed by the fact that the author doesn't understand the concept of adult collectors. That really got me. I'm used to my goddaughter being really confused as to why Uncle Raffi doesn't play with his dolls like she does but this person presumably isn't 6 years old. And I fully expected that one Ken to be on this list and was disappointed that he wasn't because I love him so much 😂
I'll bet $100 that the op either collects pokemon cards, legos, or funko pops. Possibly all three.
even then I am sure a 6 year old can understand what an ornament/ decroation is, and what collecting is too.
MAGIC EARRING KEN needs a repro...
I never realized that Barbie was meant to be seen as a teen until I was an adult. I always thought she was an adult, even when I was little. Because she did all the things only adults did.
I always thought she was mid 20s for a while. But makes sense why she a teenager though lol.
When i was a kid i thought Barbie was in her late 20 or 30
Same! Barbie was an adult, skipper was a teen, and Kelly was the little kid
Seriously. I knew since I was a kid that I wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse and I loved pregnant Midge.
My, much younger than my dad n uncles, auntie had her n I remember thinking she was so cool!!
Pregnant Midge was my favorite, too! I can't believe I gave her away years ago :(
Add to that - the pregnant Midge set was one of very few sets that contained (visibly) older dolls. It was basically a must-have if you wanted to have a "mom/dad" role in your make-believe role-play "soap opera level" drama.
@@jennynoelle6782 how was she visibly older? I thought part of the controversy was that the doll came alone (not in a pack ie sans visible husband/partner) and since it looked like any other midge people thought it "encouraged teen pregnancy"
There may have been another pregnancy midge I'm not aware of?
Elvis was also very abusive to Priscilla so another could be that people didn’t want that in a doll
He also had a thing for underaged girls in general

I still have my Midge pregnancy set. I'll likely use it to help teach my kid(s) about the birthing process when appropriate.
This article was clearly written by people who "act their age" which means, as soon as they were done with school, they jumped straight into the joyless drudgery of working 18 hours a day, getting drunk, and sleeping until it was time for work again. i'm gonna be real the idea of "babysitter isn't a rEaL job worth recognition" bit from that article reeks of classism
Thank you for this comment!! 👏👏
Don’t women mostly get criticized for not wanting to settle down and start a family, though?
Women are criticized for breathing. It’s kind of subjective to the individual. A woman not interested in marriage or children is criticized for being “selfish” and told they’ll regret it later. A woman staying home with her family isn’t “a productive member of society” and will regret it later because they’re not building a career. Wherever you fall there’s criticism unless you somehow manage to show the world how impressively perfect you are at walking the line between the two. That’s a waste of energy so just do what makes you happiest ladies 💕
@@dorkinwithdolls1425 Pretty much! Every time one group claims they suffer more than the rest of the world, I think of people I know who were bullied & harassed & criticized for a wide range of reasons, and I also think of some women I knew who suffered in silence due to other atrocities. You're right. Women get criticized for breathing. Do what makes you happier with yourself in your own life, the only life you'll ever have on this already-troubled earth.
I have her still like new in the box may I ask the price I’ve been wondering.
That sounds like my Addam's family Barbie. Morticia and Gomez together. I reeeaaallly want to open it.
“My little plastic women and I think you should broaden your horizons a little bit.” that TOOK ME OUT 😂😂😂❣️
THE WAY YOU DESCRIBED THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BARBIE ACTUALLY HAD ME ROLLING LOL
I was a teenager when that came out and I wanted her
I've been a Barbie aficionado for around 42 years now, ever since I was 4 years old.
I had the Barbie and Tanner. Never heard anything weird about it until a few years ago.
When I was a kid I remember hearing of the Oreo Barbie debacle, maybe from parents or the news? But, I only ever saw the white version of the doll in stores. So child me was very very confused.
@@asmrtpop2676 The black one was pulled from shevels because oreos imblement that black people act like white people on the inside
the dishwasher part is so funny like. playline dolls always tend to capture mundane aspects of life. do you not want her to have clean dishes???
To quote the Little Prince: “Grown ups are certainly very odd.”
Like I was maybe 5 and I could tell Midge was a grown adult compared to a Stacie or a Skipper.
I wanted her, but instead, I got "Loving You". She had a pretty great dress, so I wasn't too upset.
Tbh the George Washington Barbie looks awesome, I thought she was a pirate at first. If I had that doll I would definitely pretend she was a pirate
I thought the "DON'T EAT" thing was to tell kids not to eat the thing (As you know, chocking hazard)
I think I had her too! I remember her outfit being really hard to get on and off because there weren't any zippers or buttons.
I had her too!
"my little plastic women and i think you should broaden your horizons a bit" LOL amazing quote i will be using from now on
Miss Mojo just made a video about the most "unhinged barbies", using a majority of the dolls on this list, down to the Tippi Hedren Birds doll.
this video did amazing things for my anxiety 😭 "it's normal for adults to collect things and have hobbies..." my skin is clear, my crops are watered, my shame is dissolved,
i also had the barbie and tanner set when it first came out!! it was one of my absolute favorites, i loved barbie's articulated elbows and sneakers and i loved that tanner could eat things lol. i made her eat tic tacs all the time.
Misread that as "articulated eyebrows"😭🙏
Honestly, I grew up with the midge doll, she came out at the same time my mom was pregnant with my younger brother so I got her for my birthday. I was 5 and it was an easy way to explain what was happening in my life. Lots of kids have siblings idk why it’s so weird
The funniest part of midge to me is that she wears heels that high while in labor/recovery, that always made my mom laugh
I have to say, I've been in love with that Raider set for a little while now. The Haunted Beauty dolls look super cool as well.
Shriveled potato babies!
it is funny that an gaming article website including pokemon, where one of its largest communities focus on collecting trading cards meant for a kids game, criticize the barbie collectibles for "not being for kids"
you can always rely on game journalists to be out of touch with nerd culture!
Im honestly not very much of a barbie person but there’s this thrift store owned by an animal shelter i volunteer at and they have SO MANY 80s-90s barbies. I bought one and i’m volunteering again this weekend and im buying another one of course. I bought Chic Barbie! i love her so much. i have so many dolls mostly porcelain, cabbage patch, vintage plastic ones,i started collecting monster high recently, and im gonna try collecting some of the barbies from the thrift store. they’re all in pretty pink boxes and i can’t help myself!
oh and i have a few OMG dolls :3
Those dolls wold be bought up in no time around my neck of the woods you cannot find them anywhere around here or places that have collector dolls for sale at maybe a convention center.
they’re so pretty and i love them,i didn’t buy another one yet cus i didn’t have the money nor do i really have the space aha
The Happy Birthday Ken doll is such a reach. God forbid Barbie gives her boyfriend a present on his birthday 😂
I guess the ppl who where shocked are perverts ? LMAO
A guy can give his girlfriend a present for her birthday, but why it's considered weird when viceversa happens?
I loved the Barbie pregnant bellies when I was a kid. I used them in my storylines quite a lot and I was way more into Bratz.
Your sweater is EVERYTHING!! 😍 Is it vintage? I LOVE it! Love your channel btw.
It's from forever 21!
@@baconmon 😯 thanks 😊
@@baconmon I can't believe forever 21 made something so good
man... i was really hoping we would get some actual weird dolls :/ i thought the midge one that grew up was kinda unusual but i think i had heard of the bratz with a similar gimmick back when i was a kid
the pregnant barbie (i know its midge, but i actually had the bootleg doll shown in the picture, the one on the left! i remember the crappy quality hair and all) i actually had! and i really liked playing with it, it was really entertaining bc the one i had u couldnt remove the belly, you just flicked a sort of little door on her belly to the side where you took out the baby. like a fridge door. also the baby was super cute and detailed, and it was honestly useful to make extra use of the belly to store things like tictacs or secret messages or coins. it didnt make being pregnant look fun or nightmarish, it made it look like a normal fact of life and like another doll with a gimmick u could spend some time with before using the doll as a regular doll
"Video games can be enjoyd by everyone. And action figures can be collected by adults. But Barbie, and other fashion dolls, can't have adult colecters, it's just for children, and children only" this news website probably.
that pink dishwasher and the rest of the pink furniture from that series is sooo cute
OF COURSE BARBARA HAS A DRESS WITH HER OWN FACE ON IT! And it is what? Flawless.
Blame the parents for not realized that Midge was an adult for that line
Poor, Barbie. These arcticles don't understand that adults can colect dolls
That list just gave me a bunch of wishlist Barbies that I want now lmao
Ok as someone who has two people close to them studying early childhood education, I HATE how this article trivializes teachers. To teach, you need to pass so many tests, take years of studies including extensive studies on child psychology, and for STUDENT TEACHING? You need to work a part time job, learn while doing it, and you don’t get paid, you pay to do it!
But sure. It’s sooo lame that Barbie takes care of kids or does student teaching.
I LOVED that pregnant doll! Plus that Midge literally had a wedding ring painted on and a child son so how young could she be? Lol
I belived the earlier releases Midge didn't have a ring.
19:31 I thought it and you said it, that Barbie is gorgeous!
Roller blading Barbie will always be my favorite, catching carpets on fire and what not.. pure metal!!! Oh and twin pregnancy Barbie growing up 😍
Thank you for this. I am admin in doll FB group and I get so angry when people share articles like that in the group and don't understand why it is a problem!
All the collector barbies are so phenomenally designed!!!!
The Happy Family line came out when I was four and my favorite show was A Baby Story on TLC, I was obsessed with the doll and she was my favorite till I lost her. It was amazing, I would watch the show and play with the doll and reenact what I saw and I fell in love with every single part. I’m now 24 and a Birth Doula so I thank Mattel for helping me find my dream job at such a young age🤎
barbie: happy birthday ken!
ken: so you just gonna bring me a birthday gift on my birthday to my birthday party on my birthday with a birthday gift?
I HAD THAT BARBIE WITH THE DOG AMD POOPER SCOOPER AND LOVED IT SO MUCH
NOW IM JUST UPSET I DIDNT HAVE THE CAT VERSION TOO
I had one of the dog food/poop sets as a kid and even as a child my sister and I always joked about the poop concept!
I had Queen Amidala from Star Wars as a Barbie... still not sure if it was an actual Barbie
But I loved her, you could take off her huge hairpiece!!
Wish I knew where she is now...
I had the collectors doll of her and same I wish I knew where she was !
Wow! The Black Canary one didn't make it in to this one. That's what I call progress guys, journalism highfives for all!
The Black Canary Barbie is amazing, she just made people mad because they didn't it was based on a DC character and it was for colectors
This was a delightful video. Thank you for your research and speaking so well on the subject
I always look forward to what you have to say, you make an already interesting topic so much more fun.
just surprised mr. earring magic ken wasn't present
The haunted beauty collection is breathtaking 😍
22:20 That lawn darts joke SENT ME
Maybe I'm reaching but there's a weird amount of hatred in this article toward traditionally feminine jobs and activities like saying it's weird that Barbie is a student teacherr when that's a real thing you have to be before you became an actual teacher or basically saying that babysitting is demeaning when that's an actual job that many teenagers actually do. I just find it all very, very weird that this article just straight decides that traditionally feminine things are bad.
Pregnant Midge and Oreo Barbie were some of my favorite Barbies as a kid 😂😂
Now, if they came out with an animal line barbie, and had the black barbie as a raccoon, THAT, would be an issue lol (however, as someone that's been addressed in that way before, i would actually, with very little guilt, buy it)
You're probably thinking of the 90's baby born which could both poop and pee. I've hear it could get disgusting if it wasn't cleaned properly.
@@pastel-sunrise Yeah possibly. They shoved so many commercials at us i'm surprised i can even remember one XD
i had midge as a child and found her so comforting! she definitely helped normalize pregnancy for me
I haven't been into Barbies for many years, but those Space Goddess Barbies are spectacular and I kind of want one to have on display with all my other art 😻
People can get really weird about Barbie. You did a great job just pointing out how ridiculous articles can be.
Your Barbie sweater is so cute!! 😃 I remember my little sister had a pregnant Barbie doll and she was IN LOVE with it. She thought a pregnant Barbie was the cutest thing ever, and I thought it was cool too.
Love your Barbie sweater!❤ You should tell people where you find that kinda thing too!
I honestly rather have a barbie doll say "math class is tough" then a barbie doll say "math class is easy"
