I watched the show before I read the books, but having read the books, I'm so impressed with how they managed to squeeze everything important about the roughly 8 years Jamie spent at Helwater into ONE EPISODE. (Jamie is the Outlander here, and this includes his brief, sick relationship with Geneva, the Earl's death, and Willie's early childhood) But even so, there is so much left out. All of Lord John novels, novellas, and short stories take place in those 8 years. Jamie is in only a couple of them, and only prominently in one, The Scottish Prisoner, which gives more insight into Jamie's time there. The show makes it look like Jamie and Lord John were best buds all that time, but they weren't. It was a tumultuous, chaotic relationship because of the fact that Jamie was still technically Lord John's prisoner, plus Jamie's homophobia made him constantly push John away. There was even a 3-year period shortly after Willie was born where they didn't speak at all because John said something provocative and Jamie punched him in the face. Surprisingly, it was John's brother that brought them back together. But even still, there was great respect between them, so the show just focused on that.
But speaking about the stuff the show DID leave in, 13:13 the book described that moment as Jamie whispering things in Gaelic to Willie that he would never dare say aloud or in English, so I take that to mean that Jamie DOES, in fact, acknowledge his bastard son as his, but it's in a language that nobody within a hundred miles speaks. Even so, the show made it sound like Jamie, John, and Isobel are the only ones who know, and that's not really true. Even before she was sold to the Earl of Ellesmere, Geneva had made no secret of her preference for the handsome Scottish groom. Everyone in that Dunsany household knew. And the Earl's household knew, too. And it was getting to the point that even visitors were starting to notice how similar the young Earl looked to the groom. (Lady Dunsany bringing the woman's attention to it is a tactic Lord John uses in his stories, where if you point out a messy truth as a joke, people will decide it can't be true.)
I'm always commenting on people's reaction videos that it's easier to think of the two time periods happening at the same time, even though they are precisely 202 years apart. When you think of it that way, you can somewhat line up the big moments in Jamie and Claire's lives, though the episodes don't completely line up. She went to medical school a year or so before he went to prison and graduated while he was still in prison. He went to Helwater after she had been practicing for a couple years. Then William was born when Brianna was 11 years and 2 months old. Jamie left Helwater when William was 6, so Brianna was 17, which is right around when Frank died. So Willie and Bree both lost a father around the same time (though Willie immediately got another one.)

Claire's relationship with Joe is totally realistic. I have an older black doctor I work with who talks of women being his medical school peers, as the white men were not inclusive of either. He's in his 70s, so medical school would have been the 70s. He went to Columbia, which isnt Harvard, but almost.

Just saying though more black Americans today die from gang killings and drugs and live in poor conditions than back in those days when supposedly they did not have rights.

Imon: "I want to make it through to the end, I don't want to cry". Me: "Oh, you picked the WRONG episode!".

This is one of my favorite episodes.
I think one of the reasons for it is that we kinda see Jamie coming back to life here. These last few episodes, until Willie, Jamie looks like a man on auto-pilot. Living on just because he's not dead and it's the thing to do. The few scenes we see him with Willie he has some of his old fire back. He's still in a lot of pain, but he's finding things to live for, rather than just existing.
And I also love John Grey, and it's always a plus to see him 💖

At least Jamie did the right by leaving Willie otherwise the latter’s grandparents will find out and disown Willie.

I don't believe they would've done that. After losing their daughter and finding out she was unfaithful to her husband, they still care enough to take care of their grandson.
