Panasonic might have wanted this to give the VHS-C format a leg-up, but it ended up being an expensive nightmare and few camcorder enthusiasts would select VHS-C over Video8 (or S-VHSC over Hi8). In the end Panasonic realised they had lost the camcorder format battle and started including 8mm compatible LANC editing ports on their SVHS machines.

I really do think that's the case - much better just to use a VHS-C adaptor than have the olverly complex front loading system this machine has but if it helped solidify VHS-C as a potential home format then they were going to give it a good attempt!

They are very solid machines if looked after and the video head is a long-life head too. This one has certainly seen life and has a few more tricks up it's sleeve too before it'll work as it should. It looks like the mechanism will wear out before the head disk does! An amazing piece of engineering though.

This machine is well built and reminds me of the Panasonic NV-V10000 which was only available in japan and was very expensive at the time. The timing on these can be a pain. I have worked on these and other similar models and I have a Panasonic NV-V10000 which I repaired years ago and is working well. The piece that has broken of may have been on the cassette housing. The cassette carriage is always a common problem on these decks which also can sometimes cause the timing to become affected. Best to check all the gears closely on the carriage and the deck for any slight cracks that may not be visible.

      Panasonic NV-V10000 = AG-7350 Mechanism + NV-FS 88/90/100/200 (Consumer G-Drive) Headdrum Unit

@Televid4 Thank you so much for this - I did check the gears on the deck mechanism for any splits thinking that if the plastic holding the pinch roller has split something else might have well split too but everything looks good. I didn't check the gears on the carriage though so I will certainly be doing that when I next work on it. I think you might be right on the broken bit of plastic but just couldn't see anywhere in the carriage where something might have broken off.

I did do a picture search on the NV-V10000 and it does look more consumer based which you've now confirmed - thank you, always good to know what machine uses what deck. I do have a video on the FS200 coming up soon too. Thank you as always. 😊

This device has at least one TBC with 2x2 lines of memory. The NV-FS200 and NV-HS1000 only have 2x1 line storage capacity. Since the distance between the cassette door and the head drum is "normal", I prefer the solution with the adapter cassette in which the light barrier holes are taped shut, in order to crank the jog button back to the camcorder starting point. With the solution, you should neither wind completely to the end nor to the beginning, so that the tape does not tear off. However, if customers wanted the tape to be rewound, I would ask myself why they didn't take it to a better service provider right away, because then I'd probably be too bad to throw the tape away. If the HeadDrum runs out for less than 4 seconds, the bearing should be oiled. You should put thin strips of cardboard between the head drum and the stator so that the windings on the heads are not damaged.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I totally agree with the cassette adaptor approach over this overly complicated front-loading system but I can see why Panasonic were pushing the VHS-C format steering consumers to use VHS-C camcorders and then being able to quickly view and edit them on this deck. Very interesting on the TBC - I've found very little information on it so far but that's an impressive performance for such a deck. I'll take a look at the head motor run-on time too - thank you for sharing that.

@@MrBetaByte I've watched other G drives on YT ran-on over 8 seconds. Someone whose head drum stopped after 1 second complained that the wow and flutter was so large. If you loosen the miniature Torx screws on the cover plate, the head drum lowers onto the stator. Normally it is enough to renew the "hard fat". I have never had to oil the bottom side. The device is said to have cost DM 8,000 (approx. €4,000) in Germany, which probably only appeals to S-VHS-C users.

They were marvels of engineering, but an absolute nightmare to work on. Back in the 90s I dabbled into a few of these and similar. Panasonic was widely regarded as the BEST Svhs video you could get for the consumer/prosumer market. They were SO painful to service, and they often didn't last that long after service, even at the professional service techs stores.

    • @MrBetaByte
      @MrBetaByte  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I so agree with you - always preferred Panasonic over any other manufacturer for VHS decks but all the decks from this generation of machines were painful to repair and really always needed to be re-timed or checked right the way through even if the miss-time or broken gear was only in one sections for the gear trains. I do wonder if that's why so many didn't last long after repair maybe - trying to take shortcuts which really doesn't pay, as I found out with this deck. Thank you so much for sharing.

@@MrBetaByte Well, you brought up so many memories from my young adulthood I almost had tears in my eyes thinking back of all those machines, also S-vhs for production, Betacam, U-matic and all the stuff I messed around with for the Animation people, hah... it was a weird kind of obsession. Today is not much better, just different, now it's all about clouds, network configuration, servers ah...I'll stop now :)

    • @moritzeheim132

@MrBetaByte I remember a price of over 4000 DM. In a German forum someone mentions a price of 6000 DM. I was a student with no income at the time, my price range was an NV-HD700 😆

    Where do you live
    do you service VCR
    I have a running v8000 but
the issue only is video is not clear but its not head issue
it might need caps changed on the video pcb which i am trying to find out out take out but i unable to do that due to what need to be taken out by steps
I could use some help if I can get a schematic link for manual

      @@MrBetaByte apology for late reply
yeah you are right thats the complex design on circuit board I have seen even though and its pro user built like a tank but i thought it was
repair friendly but this is a complex in the internal design
I do repairs also especially on caps but i havent found schematic for this model
my mechanism is full working its just the video
and its not the head because the video is clear for few minutes once it heats up then it looks like distorted badly
      so highly caps than heads
and something on video amp pcb or video pcb it self its causing it for sure
      audio is purely working condition
it might needed put through osci after caps done
even the nv-v10000 has similer design except for twin mechanism for vhs to vhsc vice versa
so this is the only model panasonic brought out on twin mechanism
so i would highly suggest no one to throw it in the dump even in today price this is expensive to even buy as used ones on ebay
I live in scotland so not far if you are in mid wales
I dont mind sending it you if you want to check it out
when will be the third part will be for nv-v8000
i am just keen to know whats in process for mechanism need aligned

I do wonder if there was an equivalent - I'll do some research and let you know. The US did generally get so many more interesting machines than Europe mainly due to the shared format of NTSC with Japan but I hear what you're saying - it's one beast of a machine and really a true engineering gem.
