- Didnt say in the video but you need to keep the car in level when setting the right level for oil.
Partnumbers you need
Transmission oil: 31256775
O-Ring levelplug: 1233068
O-Ring drainplug: 3520718
O-Ring fillplug: 30735186

Very good video. However, I recommend saving your money next time and flushing with a cheaper but compatible fluid that will be half the price of the Volvo fluid such as AISIN who makes the TG-81SC 8-Speed transmission and is likely what is in the original transmission (according to FCP Euro). Also, Castrol makes an "import" ATF (sold in America) that states on the bottle that it is compatible with all Volvo ATF specifications although it may not be "approved" by Volvo despite Volvo's close relations with Castrol.
I got this oil almost for free, otherwise i would have gotten a cheaper alternative.

My 2016 XC90 was shaking on the upshift from 2nd to 3rd gear or just regular acceleration, it was really rough and I thought the transmission was toast. now the car drives like it's new. Thanks for the great guide.

Can you suggest me which scan tool I should buy, here in Sweden, a buget one just for Volvo, to be able to read the transmission oil temperature. I bought transmission oil, but I realize that my Orbit scan tool does not have the ability to measure the temperature.

I am not so familiar with different scan tools since I only have 1 other than Volvo vida.
Thank you from Canada, I miss Sweden as I use to travel there on business. So the big deal in English, I never met any Swede that did not speak English, especially when it comes to tech, you guys are awesome. One great thing about Volvo, many steps are the same across the entire line. I have a 2008 XC90, the air box is different, the transmission is different, but the fill and drain plugs are identical and the process is the same. Thank you for actually demonstrating the temp read outs and how to fill the levels correctly. I have watched so many that gloss over this and I completely missed how to do it. I have 420K, some leaks, to compensate for the leaks about 300 ml was added. So before I do anything I am going to check the level, if I get no drips then I already know I am below the 3 liters. Hopefully I will not be blind before draining. Even with leaks I am want to make sure I am at baseline. Thanks again.
Just dont forget engine in idle when checking level. Thank you for sharing your experience with swedes :)

Ja egentligen skulle man ha börjat med engelska när jag startade kanalen. Hade nog sett lite annorlunda ut på prenumerant fronten då. Man lägger ju ändå ner flertal timmar på att göra how to videos och sen bara få 10000 visningar för att man begränsar sig till ett fåtal svenskar. Hade nog gett lite mer att kunna nå ut till alla volvo ägare över hela världen. Tror att det ska gå att sätta på automatisk textning till svenska om man vill men vet inte hur bra det fungerar.

Thank you for this video. My 2017 Volvo XC90 is a D5 AWD. Is yours a AWD as well? I assume the transmission fluid is the same in both the XC90 D5 AWD and XC90 D5 just 2-wheel drive vehicles? Kinda confused here.
All xc90 are awd.
@@StefanBergman Hi Stefan and thanks for the reply. That's not quite true at least when I bought the car here in Spain (2017), the XC90 indeed could be optioned with or without AWD. Maybe nowadays that's not the case. Anyway that answers my question and again, thank you again for the helpful video.
Might be a Spanish model. I doubt you have much use of AWD in Spain 😄
@@StefanBergmanLOL! I do a fair amount of mountainous driving, and some driving in very steep vineyards with dirt (sometimes muddy) roads. AWD has been a godsend in this case (of course I have a Nissan 4x4 truck for normal use, but I can’t take my clients in that old jalopy!). 😅
Good video :) and plenty valuable information, especially part numbers and oil quantity. Do you think it is necessary to do adaptation afterwards? Would it be possible do perform same oil change without having diagnostic interface (without checking oil temp for level purpose?) How long did you have it idling before it went up to 50C ?
Not necessary to do adaption, its recommended to do though. About 40 minutes on idle is enough to set level.

How much oil flowed when the level was done. Last level. You put in 3,5 liters of oil and how many did you take out? Min 34:53.
I put in 3.5 liters and took out 800 grams after the temperature reached 50 degrees.The first time after 10,000 miles, I removed 2,700 grams of oil.

These kinds of transmission flushes are always very tedious, i have not done this on a newer Volvo but have flushed more than a few VW's. With that said, for a large part of my life I was a huge Volvo guy, most mostly 240/740/940 and a few 850/S70/V70 and others, i have owned more than 30 Volvos and a few SAAB's. I was the local Volvo / SAAB guy in my area here on Long Island. Several years ago I went to visit family in Lithuania, I rented a band new Volvo S80 and drove it all over Lithuania and was a highlight of my life. I really enjoy the videos, you speak perfect English.

Thanks from here in the US. Great video!!! I'm about to do this on a 2002 V70 T5 with 120,000 miles which sadly has never had the transmission fluid changed (I inherited the car). Then I'll do it in my 2011 S60 T6 which has 70,000 miles on it. I asked a big Volvo dealer in the US (in Maryland/DC area) to change the transmission fluid in my wife's 2015.5 XC60 T6 with 70,000 miles, and they refused. They told me that if the oil is changed, the car might be able to move. Crazy. So I'll have to do it myself. Not all mechanics are as smart as you. Your English is outstanding.
Yeah its crazy that they even say that. And if it didnt move afterwards it would have gotten to that point anyway soon.
It's scary they use rubber o ring on the big transmission drain plug on the newer Volvo. if it leaks, transmission will be destroyed. They use aluminum washer on big drain plug and only rubber o ring on small level plug in older gen. Better change it to aluminum washer.
That's why its important to put a new one every time you loosen that one.
Hi Stefan! Great video!!! One question: after changing the trans. oil did you experienced changes during driving/gears changing?
A slight smoother shifting maybe. The thing is that you should do this operation before transmission shifts harder. For some people it solves problems with the transmission but thats not always.
Thanks Stefan. Do you need a special scan tool to get those options you had after you changed the oil to reset the adaption? My local Volvo dealer said that only a dealership can set that, and they charge $225 to run that.
Not a special but a good one. Its not the end of the world if you dont reset it either.
Hi Stefan ,Is there any problem to partially change oil once in the year with one 4l jug,without leveling? In this case the qantity would be one liter more in the box.This fact will help with temperature lowering,but is it dangerous with something else.

Autel MK906BT does a good job. Downside is that the license is kinda expensive to renew, around $600 for 1 year.

Hey Stefan,,, quick one. I've been wondering, how is this possible that you had oil flowing after first levelplug (08:35) removal? 1. You did this on a cold engine, therefore there should be less volume than on hot engine. Secondly - after the whole job was completed, you have used the same plug to adjust (self-level) oil level at around 50C. Which makes me thinking that originally there was more oil... otherwise nothing should come out initially.. Am I right ?
Engine wasn't running when i opened small plug, always higher oil level then. Level should be set with engine on idle.

No didn’t have any problem at all.

Yeah i think the transmissions are the same. There are no filter to exchange. Not unless you open the transmission i think

Hej Stefan, dum fråga kanske, men hur tar man reda på vilken typ växellåda (beteckning) man har på sin Volvo? har nyligen införskaffat mig en Volvo S90 T6 (Bensin) AWD, 2017. vill passa på och tacka för alla dina videos, har lärt mig massor tack vare dig, skönt och lugnt stil du kör så förtsätt med den goda arbete.
Brukar stå i bruksanvisningen. Misstänker dock du har likadan låda som i denna video.

Mina instruktionsvideos är inte för att underhålla någon, det ska vara för att om man behöver göra detta själv så finns det en ordentlig instruktion för det. Och då tror jag inte språket har någon större betydelse om man vill få det gjort. På detta vis så kan även folk utanför sverige förstå vad jag säger då många efterfrågar att jag ska texta mina instruktionsvideos men då är det mycket enklare att bara snacka engelska direkt. Tjena Stefan! Saknar du xc90n något? Det är en riktig dröm bil! Har nyligen köpt en v60 2019 med d3an som jag upplever växlar ryckigt. Blev det någon skillnad för dig efter service och adaption?
Nej saknar den inte alls. Tyckte stolarna var osköna i den. För plastigt med mycket knarrande ifrån panelerna. Törstig som fan att dra husvagnen med. Dyr överlag att köra längre med då strömmen tog slut efter 2,5 mil och den började sluka 0,9 milen.
Kolla så att du har rätt mängd olja i lådan. Annars gör ett oljebyte.

Oj jag kollade inte sånt när jag sköljde lådan i min XC90 för jag körde med volvos egen olja. Står i handboken vilken klass på oljan du ska ha, är det AW1 så ska det funka.

why does no one ever flush the gearbox via the oil cooler? surely this would be a more efficient way, i am intend to do this with mine and i suspect it will waste much less oil as you just flush until the oil runs clean, if i am wrong can you explain why ?
It's still gonna take the same amount of oil to get it clear. Its because of the torque inverter you need to flush it because you only mix dirty with new oil all the time.
yes i agree, but the advantage is not leaving any used oil to mix with the new so i am thinking dump out of the sump plug refit then flush with new until the out flow runs clear, should work IMO@@StefanBergman

What is better (more safe, more effective)? I like the DIY approach - this is the main reason I follow you. How often do you change the oil in this gearbox?
I have nothing to compare with im sorry. Recomended intervall for changing is 6000km, do that and it will run smooth for a long time.

Nästa sak, varför envisas med att byta olja i automat om det inte är problem, volvo själva borde veta om det var nödvändigt. Mercedes byter en gång efter 2k mil sen enbart om det är något problem
Varför inte ? Finns ju absolut inget negativt med det förutom att det kostar pengar. Men den pengen kan vara skön och betala för att veta att grejerna är nya och fräscha.
Man märker skillnad på en bil som gått 13k mil om man byter. Man kan tycka att bilen växlar fint innan byte men den växlar ännu finare efter bytet.
@@StefanBergman min senaste volvo v70 automat märktes absolut ingen skillnad efter 38k mil, oljan byttes enbart för att en packbox gick sönder, servad på Volvo hela tiden så oljan lär inte varit bytt innan och absolut ingen skillnad när den växla.
Bilen kanske inte hade dragkrok. Det är mycket större slitage på oljan när man dragit med bilen.
Läste för några år sedan att Volvo har oljebyte i automaterna i serviceschemat för taxi och polisbilar men inte för privatbilar. En anledning borde vara att det finns risk för problem inom garantitiden annars. När privatpersoner får problem så har i regel garantitiden gått ut och problemet är då inte Volvos längre.
Hello there. Can you tell me model of the scanner that you are using? Based on your video this scanner can be used to performed adaptations for new transmission oil.
Its an Autel MK906BT, yeah it can perform pretty much.
