  • A round up of my makes from the summer. I'm not a quick sewist, so there are not many!
    Patterns mentioned are
New Look K6449 shirt dress made in Starfish fabric from Sew Hayley Jane box
Simplicity S9614 polo top, made from jersey and twill from Jenny Stitches
Simplicity S9052 Parka Coat made from showerproof twill (?) from Jenny Stitches
Prima Chino Shorts pattern (May 2024) using navy twill from Jenny Stitches
Pyjamas from last month's Sew Hayley Jane Classic box fabric, using Simplicity 1563 for the pyjama shorts and the Avid Seamstress drop sleeved top for the pyjama top
Fabrics Store Anca Shirt (free pattern) from floral linen, purchased from Sew Hayley Jane outlet shop - it was in a luxury box
finally, my favourite the Cashmerette Roseclair Dress in fabric from a Sew Hayley Jane box, plus extra from the SHJ outlet store.
hope you like my little selection
    happy sewing

First time watching you and I am happy to see someone like me, a dressmaker in the past re- visiting my love of sewing due to a cruise I went on in March this year, you are even my size so we have something in common, look forward to more videos in the future.

@Laura55sere hi Laura, 👋. I used to sew as a teenager. Without knowing how difficult it was meant to be, I just nipped to our local market, bought some fabric and a pattern and off I went! Then life happened and Sewing took a back seat. I picked it back up after a few series of The great British sewing bee. I'm busy sewing for my cruise now, I've a jumpsuit and a nice fleecy cardigan cut out ready to go. So glad you are sewing again too, it's such a brilliant thing to do and such a wonderful community to be in 😘

Great vlog as always kay. I always read the finished measurements on the front of the pattern piece as they always add extra ease in and I normally go down at least one or two sizes.

I do feel for you with the sizing although you did make me laugh!!😆. These days I spend as much time going through measurements as I do sewing!! There is no consistency at all and Big 4 are definitely the worst. I measure every pattern piece and deduct seam allowances to check the finished garment measurements relative to my size and the look I want. Tedious but worth it. You Roseclair dress is absolutely gorgeous and it is so lovely to see your joy with it. Such a lovely, refreshing vlog - what I call real life sewing 😂😂😂. Happy sewing. Lynne😊

As several others have said, check the finished measurements. Also, measure a similar garment in a similar style that you already own and compare measurements to the finished measurements on the pattern or envelope. Also. Pay close attention to sleeve length and width as many patterns are either too long or short or tight there.
Pin the pattern piece together along the seam lines and hold up against your body matching center front and back (be careful to handle gently so pattern does not tear). This will give you a general idea of size, although I don't find it as accurate. You have to pin out pleats and gathers, etc. but it will point out major discrepancies.
Also. You can cut out "muslin" using an old sheet of the major pieces-front, back and sleeve and baste together and try on. Make changes with pins or mark with a pin. This will give you an idea of how the garment will fit w/o taking a lot of time. After making changes, take the muslin apart and use the pieces to compare with pattern pieces of any new projects you sew. Again, this gives only rough idea of fit, but will help alleviate disappointment after spending hours on a project that does not fit.
Finally, perfect some simple projects to give yourself a feeling of accomplishment and then tackle a more diffucult one. It is easy to get discouraged. You need a success after a disappointment to revive your confidence. You learn from mistakes and each one builds your sewing skills

@kathleensmith1522 Hi Kathleen, you are so kind to take the time to type out such a brilliant comment. I've read through and the next time I make a pattern new to me, I'm going to make a muslin as you suggest. I've got a charity shop duvet cover, so I'll use that. As you say its frustrating using up good fabric on something which doesn't turn out right. And what is it with sleeves!?! I've had all sorts, long, short, massively wide, unbelievably tight. You sound like a very experienced dressmaker, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge😘

Echo the finished measurements, but on some patterns, I swear the Company of Big 4 decided we were all not taking into account the ease we need, so have fudged the finished measurements list, found on piece 1 always, or in a wardrobe pattern, the front pattern piece will have it. I actually measure it, with a ruler, do a little math, know what ease I want, and cut out whatever size happens to fit. I’ve sewn long enough, and strangely I know, my body simply doesn’t change a whole lot, that I can tell at a glance more investigating is in order. The jacket is lovely, but clearly a bit big, as the polo shirt. Both geared towards men’s sizes. Some patterns have different patterns for men and women, some expect women to know what men’s size they wear. Which is probably a smaller…….nice job, tho. I really like New Look, and love the shirt dress. Take care.

@craftymystic4868 thank you so much for taking the time to write your comment, it's very helpful and I agree. I think the Big 4 ease is way over what it's supposed to be in some patterns. A couple of people have mentioned measuring the actual pattern pieces as well, and that's what I'm going to do next time I use a pattern new to me. I'll still wear the jacket, once I've sorted the sleeves and I think I can take in the polo top so all is not lost 🙂.
