@@179rich I hope it does too. Can’t remember what his opinion of the Cure ( particularly early 80s Cure) was . If he doesn’t like them he won’t like the Banshees I’m guessing. “Kaleidoscope/Juju” albums would’ve been the best place to start.
1. Origin of Symmetry (5) 2. Absolution (5) 3. Black Holes & Revelations (5) 4. The Resistance (4) 5. Drones (3.5) 6. The 2nd Law (3) 7. Showbiz (3) 8. One of my favorite bands from this century. My Ranking: 1. Absolution (10/10) 2. Black Holes and Revelations (10/10) 3. The Resistance (9,5/10) 4. Origin Of Symmetry (9/10) 5. The 2nd Law (8/10) 6. Simulation Theory (7/10) 7. Drones (6,5/10) 8. Showbiz ( 6,5/10) Greetings from Canary Islands.
Great watch, really interesting to see the view of someone who isn't a fan. Totally appreciate it isn't your kind of music man, but also cool to see a fan as well. I'm rediscovering the band after a long break of not really paying them much attention. I hated quite a lot of recent stuff, I dunno it feels commercial. They've gone from doing epic space rock to 80s retroism. The thing is, I've been an idiot and written off the albums I truly love. Haven't even given a chance to the post 2nd Law albums but I think I will now.
Just really on here to hit the like button ( but I’m a Listography addict so obviously I’ll hang around and hear what the guys say ) . I tried with Muse back in the day with their first 4 albums. Not my cup of hot chocolate. Kramzer perfectly summed up a lot of my concerns about this band ,so won’t elaborate. Respect Joe’s ( and any of their fans) love of them . A band that if they click with you , you could easily follow to the ends of the earth for . Would have been interesting to hear Jason’s take on them ( particularly on the production side of it) My guess is , along the same lines as Kramzer ( maybe even more negative ..if that’s possible 😂 )
Something of a Muse fanboy like Joe, as you can tell by choosing them for 3 of my albums of my year. These are all pretty good in my view: 8 - Simulation Theory 7 - Showbiz 6 - Drones 5 - The 2nd Law 4 - The Resistance 3 - Black Holes & Revelations 2 - Origin of Symmetry 1 - Absolution
As a massive Muse fan, I appreciated listening to both perspectives and actually agree with a lot of Kramzer's points, I just really like their 'sound' a lot more. Muse is by far the best band I've ever seen live. Bellamy is an incredible showman. Remastered Origin of Symmetry is currently my favorite album of all time. It's just perfection. Weird. Difficult. Bombastic. Unashamed. Raw. The richer and more textured sound of the remastered version just cannot be topped for me. I don't think I've ever headbanged harder than the first time I saw Muse live and they went into the main riff of New Born. I cannot listen to the album as a whole without crying because of the ending vocals on Megalomania. It's not really a song I listen to on its own, but is just the perfect cherry on top for the entire mood and feel of this album. Thank you for doing this.
Muse is a top 20 favorite band for me, so I was elated to hear you guys would be covering them. My story with the band: I'm one of the 10 or so Americans who discovered Muse at a time when Showbiz was their only album. One of my best friends, who is half-Czech, went off to high school in Prague and would visit the US in the summers. He'd always bring "news from the front", sharing with us the latest about what was popular in Europe at the time. One summer, he told me about this awesome band that was about to be huge. I and my immediate circle of friends summarily fell in love with them, during a time when no one around us knew who they were. It was like a secret band that no one else had heard of. We had to import Showbiz and Origin of Symmetry from the UK. While their sound has certainly evolved over the decades, listening to them brings back great memories of enjoying my high school and college years with my closest friends. I could write a dissertation about each album, but suffice it to say I was both surprised and fascinated about how different our rankings were. I.e. I can't believe Kramzer rates Origin of Symmetry so low, and Joe rates Black Holes so high. To me, it is revelatory about how much there is to analyze about their music. My rankings: 8) Black Holes & Revelations (I still like it, but it's the least interesting to me. Marks the end of "sincere Muse" and begins the "super-bombastic Muse" phase with the last track.) 7) Simulation Theory 6) The 2nd Law 5) Drones 4) Absolution 3) The Resistance 2) Showbiz 1) Origin of Symmetry (One of my top 10 albums)
My favorite band of all time. Reason being they were the band that got me into music on a deep level. I think they take styles from many different places, but it’s the way they blend them together that makes their music so appealing to me. The Queen influenced tracks are some of my favs. 1. Absolution (10/10) (fav song) Stockholm Syndrome 2. OOS (10/10) - Space Dementia/Citizen Erased 3. BHAR (10/10) but slightly less so - Knights of Cydonia 4. The Resistance (9/10) - Unnatural Selection 5. Showbiz (8/10) - Showbiz 6. The 2nd Law (8/10) - Survival 7. Drones (7/10) - Reapers/The Handler 8. Simulation Theory (6/10) - Pressure
Joe, I’ve seen em live at the Pinkpop festival in Holland in 2002 when they were touring Origin Of Symmetry and they were absolutely mindblowing! A huge crowd on a sundrenched afternoon, over 90°F, and they absolutely rocked the place. Just 3 guys on a huge stage with a sound that killed all of the competition over that 4-day festival. Don’t miss em next time they’re out!! 👍
@@NaughtyVampireGod No, The 2nd Law is a masterpiece, look past the dubstep chorus of Unsustainable, and there is so much incredible music in that album
I'll be honest, I stumbled across Muse very early in their career. I saw them accidentally, without knowing anything about them, in what was then the New Bands Tent at Glastonbury in 1999, and was completely blown away. So I have a real soft spot for Showbiz. I rushed out to buy it on the day it was released and it was pretty much my favourite album for good while after that. I've never properly sat down and compared all their albums back to back, but they're a bit like two bands for me. Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry, Absolution, Black Holes are all decent. After that they massively jump the shark. I can't emphasise just how much they jumped the shark. It's like they bounced on a massive trampoline over the world's biggest shark, with fireworks and glitter cannons going off all around them. If I had to choose a favourite album, for sentimental reasons alone I'd have to pick Showbiz, but maybe Absolution is a close 2nd.
Joe absolutely nailed it on this one...he definitely knows his Muse...Kramzer was kind of all over the shop, but he admits Muse are not his thing...spot on Joe!
I have never once heard anyone complain about Dom the way he does. He is highly regarded as a fantastic drummer who brings a lot of energy. I can understand someone not being a fan of Muse, but I think this guy just doesn't get it. All three of Muse are some of the best of their craft. While music is subjective, technique is objective. Matt is not even classically trained, but you would never guess it based on his playing and singing. I think he needs to see a live. concert.
@@TastesLikeMusic I never said he was John Bonham or Neil Peart. Or that he is even top 10. Just that he is respected and brings energy to their live performances. I like that you stuck to your guns and gave an honest opinion though. We see less of that as time goes on.
8. Simulation Theory 7. Drones 6. 2nd Law 5. Black Holes and Revelations 4. Showbiz (From 4 to 1, they're all almost tied, I love them all so much) 3. The Resistance (Work of art, Exogenesis is brilliant) 2. Origin of Symmetry (Preferably the remix album, amazing from start to finish) 1. Absolution (Perfect)
As a Muse defender, I’m looking forward to this. Yeah they’re melodramatic and campy with how excessive and indulgent they can be but when their sound works it really works. The Radiohead comparison is fitting at least on the first two albums, but it’s clearly only one out of a bunch of influences. 8. Drones (horrible, have no idea how anyone defends it. if anything is truly pretentious and corny, it’s this one) 7. Simulation Theory (some of the remixes save it) 6. 2nd Law (interesting direction but baffled Kramzer likes this) (Hug gap, bottom 3 are genuinely bad to me) 5. The Resistance (it’s not nearly as bad as Kramzer makes it out to be, never got the hate for this one) 4. Black Holes & Revelations 3. Showbiz (surprised Kramzer didn’t like Unintended, was convinced that would be a highlight for him. Feels very The Bends to me, even the same producer. I like how rough and restrained it is) 2. Origin of Symmetry 1. Absolution Yeah I guess I’m really just baffled by a lot of Kram’s takes lol
Drones has some great tracks like Reapers, Dead Inside, the Handler (maybe one of their best ever) and Defector. Also some pretty bad songs like Revolt and the title track. Not Muse at their most innovative and lyrics are typically cringe as usual but definitely plenty of quality tracks on that album. I agree with you that the remixes somewhat save Simulation Theory although I think the first half of Simulation Theory is enjoyable enough. Couldn't disagree with you more about the 2nd Law! So many really great tracks include Supremacy , Madness, panic station, animals ( one of their most underrated songs) and one of my personal favorite Muse songs ever , the absolutely epic and completely daft Survival! I also love the piano track 'Isolated system' at the end! I have a feeling Kram likes this album because it is probably a bit more poppy and less Musey (compared to the Resistance which I personally love but it is an album where Muse ramp up their musiness to 11)! A song like Big Freeze is a really cracking pop rock track that could have been a hit single for the likes of U2 but because that isn't really what Muse fans look for, it ends up being more or less overlooked here. But The 2nd Law is defo so underrated and as time has passed you may notice that it keeps climbing up the lists of many Muse fans favorite albums. Plenty of the Muse fans worst to best videos have it very high so I recommend you give it another try!
I enjoyed listening to the Muse catalogue :- 1. Absolution 2. Showbiz 3. Black Holes … 4. Origin of Symmetry 5. The Resistance 6. Simulation Theory 7. The 2nd Law 8. Drones I quite like the dramatics of their music, which is probably why I liked the Mutt Lange produced Drones the least.
Joe - thanks for mentioning that Muse rereleased Origins on vinyl remastered, i had no idea, but based on this video i purchased the record, and i gotta tell you it like listening to a whole new album, i always disliked the mix on the original cd - now its sounds much fuller and i can dive into this great album fresh again, thanks!
Hey guys thanks a bunch for giving us a heads up on future listographies! I couldn't get it together for Muse and I don't know if I could have taken all that bombast in such a short amount of time anyway lol I think I'm going to pass on Dwight and head straight for Built to Spill. A very cool choice! Not too popular either! This will bring you some hipster cred. ;-) ;-) ;-) Reeeally appreciate the extra time
I’m a big fan of Muse. Matt Bellamy is the reason I bought me an electric guitar. As a Teenager, I kind of tortured my parents by singing ‘Micro Cuts’ all the time, I feel bad about that in hindsight. I know all the albums in and out and there’s not a lot I dislike. The best part about Muse is the Bass imo, Chris Wolstenholme’s playing and its sound. Watch out, it’s raining 5 star ratings in this comment! And it’s quite a long comment, I’m sorry for that. Good Albums (3 Stars): 8. Absolution (It’s a good album, but it severely lacks great song material found on other Muse albums. While the first half has some good songs, the second half thins out. In my opinion this one is wildly overrated by Muse fans. In my opinion their worst album, still good though.) Really Good Albums (4 Stars): 7. Simulation Theory (A strange album this is. When it came out I listened to it a couple of times and thought “Well, that’s it? Nothing special”. But going through it again made me discover some great songs. It still is not really a new sound or an innovative record, but it kind of works. There are some duds in here like ‘Get up and Fight’ or ‘Propaganda’ (which has that cringe-inducing ‘Death Eater’-metaphor which is horribly wrong). But ‘The Dark Side’, ‘Thought Contagion’ and ‘Break It To Me’ are really great songs. Overall after three years better than I thought.) 6. The 2nd Law (Dubstep and Electronica get some love on this one. I like it. There still are classic Muse songs in here like ‘Supremacy’ or the over-the-top ‘Survival’, but also the dubstep monster ‘The 2nd Law: Unsustainable’ is great. Not every song works, but it sure is an interesting album.) 5. The Resistance (They try to bring in some opera, some symphony, some Queen (‘United States of Eurasia’), and it works. Not as strong as the predecessor, but still amazing songs in it. ‘Undisclosed Desires’ was the first Muse song I heard, and I still love it, 11-12 years later.) Amazing Albums (5 Stars): 4. Drones (‚Drones‘ marks a return to their early Muse days. It’s a concept-album, yeah the concept is not great and the lyrics are cheesy. But the songs are amazing. ‘Reapers’ and ‘The Handler’ are two of their best songs and the epic ‘The Globalist’ is also pretty damn good. I don’t even mind the cheesy chorus on ‘Revolt’. An amazing Muse album, the best in their 2010s for sure.) 3. Black Holes and Revelations (After the slight misstep that was ‘Absolution’, they tried to incorporate a lot more synths. The result is a fantastic album with songs ranging from great dance numbers (‘Starlight’) over nice n soft songs (‘Soldiers Poem’) to an epic rock opera (Knights of Cydonia). I love this album, no bad songs on here. Maybe 'Hoodoo' is not amazing, but still really good.) 2. Showbiz (Their debut is a little rough around the edges, but that’s why I like it very much. It has such a raw feeling to it. All the songs except the last one are great. It already has the Muse sound that other albums will refine. The songs on here are so good, it has to be their number 2. The title song has a perfect build-up, will probably talk more about that song tomorrow.) 1. Origin of Symmetry (There it is, Muse’s masterpiece. What was a little raw on ‘Showbiz’ now is refined and even better. Not one weak song on here. The guitar riff on ‘Plug in Baby’ is iconic, among the best riffs ever made. The sequencing is also spot on. The album has epic proggy numbers, hard rocking songs and sweet ballads/soft songs, everything you want from a good rock album. The best Rock album of the 21st century.)
Absolution seems to be the album that people who aren't big Muse fans (like myself) gravitate towards- probably because it has the most even mix of accessibility and bombast. I agree that the 2nd half of Absolution thins out... but there's still a bare majority I'd return to (and I consider that majority to be Muse's best work, so the album just barely made it to 4 stars for me.)
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 I really do like the first half of 'Absolution'. The last few songs are among their worst in my opinion. But I get why people like it more than the overblown stuff they did afterwards. For me it is just Muse trying to be not-Muse (again, on the second half.).
??? I'm not a Muse fan really....but am shocked Kramzer was not too impressed by Origin....I think the whole album is full of clearly outstanding songs....
I was briefly into them from maybe albums 2-4 and then just sort of forgot about them. Saw them live in a 2000 seater and it was the loudest show I had ever been too, felt like stadium show in a large club.
By the way When you guys were talking about seeing them live I actually saw them in Canada they were great they had puppets and Robots It was amazing yes they're really great live.
I only know their 5 first albums so I can't rate the last 3. I like them but lost interest , and don't often go back to them. 1. Absolution 2. Black holes and revelations 3. Origin of Symmetry 4. The Resistance 5. Showbiz
Soooo, the comparison thing with Radiohead... I think, Muse was definitely influenced by 'The Bends' and 'Ok Computer', especially by 'Exit Music (For a Film)'. But they pretty much made it their own already by 'Origin of Symmetry'. And regarding Queen. Songs like 'US of Eurasia' are obviously influenced by Queen, but Muse is doing it better, so I don't mind it at all.
Always look forward to you lists! Especially looking forward to seeing you guys take on Coldplay. Kramzer, you mentioned that you like piano rock, have you given early Elbow a listen?
Another great vid, guys. Obviously I’m late to the party, but I’ve just discovered A Place To Bury Strangers. As far as I’m aware, they’re pretty much unheard of here in the UK and was wondering if any of you guys rated them? Loving what I’ve heard so far, MBV meets the Mary Chain meets Ride. Certainly scratching my Shoegaze itch! 😊
Really tough call for my top 2. The new mix of OoS makes it an even more incredible beast but Absolution just has a higher quotient of their very best tracks and also has a bit more variety. In comparison Black Holes is a pretty tight collection of songs but is a bit too glossy. Beyond that not much else holds a candle. Drones is pretty dumb but also tonnes of fun. 1. Absolution 9/10 2. Origin Of Symmetry 9/10 3. Black Holes and Revelations 8/10 4. Drones 8/10 5. The Resistance 7/10 6. Showbiz 7/10 7. The 2nd Law 6/10 8. Simulation Theory 5/10
For me, Muse are one of those bands that answer a question that seemingly no one asked. In this case, "What would happen if The Bends and A Night At The Opera were generically fused into a monstrous hybrid of radio fodder?" 😉
1. Absolution (6/10) 2. Origin of symmetry (6/10) 3. Black holes and revelations (6/10) 4. The resistance (5/10) 5. Showbiz (5/10) 6. The 2nd law (4/10) 7. Simulation theory (4/10) 8. Drones (3/10) 9. Will of the people (2/10)
Hi I appreciate your in-depth opinions and analysis of so many groups. I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a best to worst list for the Byrds sometime, hopefully with everyone participating. Or maybe you have already done one and I can't find it.
@@TastesLikeMusic What about the Jesus and Mary Chain? I think Kramzer is a fan . . . The New Pornographers would also be amazing. Kasabian . . . I will stop myslef before going on for about 50 or so "what about"s . . . :) You boys are the best.
I just received my Origin of Symmetry Anniversary Remixx Vinyl and I have to say that it is even better than the original album! As Joe stated, the inclusion of Futurism peps up the latter third of the album which makes it even stronger than it was before.
I had to pass on playing along this week, I kinda feel the way about Muse as Kram does with Queen from a previous side 3 (and I also agree regarding Queen). They are so bombastic and over the top they tire me out quick, I'd need a break after each album. If I had like a month to listen to them they probably would get decent grades, theyre not bad just the ultimate small doses band for me.
Ok, so I've finally got around to revisiting all of their albums now. You know what, although I feel the biggest sentimental connection to Showbiz, I have to admit it's not the best album. I'd forgotten how good Origin of Symmetry is tbh. Been a long time since I listened to it. Absolution and Black Holes are very close to Showbiz as well. Overall, very solid for the first 4 albums, then a sharp drop off afterwards, with absolutely no sign of recovery. I beg they just stop now. Anyway, this is my ranking: 1) Origin of Symmetry - 9.3 2) Showbiz - 8.6 3) Absolution - 8.6 4) Black Holes & Revelations - 8.5 5) The Resistance - 7.2 6) The 2nd Law - 6.7 7) Drones - 6.4 8) Simulation Theory - 5.9
also i just looked it up the wiltern is actually only 2500 capacity not 4000 seeing them live in that small of a place was magical and was never gonna happen like that ever it reminds me of when i flew from la to spain in 2003 to see radiohead play in salamanca in a 1500 capacity club 3 times it will never be that intimate ever again but what a great memory
1. Origin Of Symmetry - 10/10 2. Black Holes & Revelations - 10/10 3. Absolution - 9/10 4. The Resistance - 8.5/10 5. Drones - 8/10 6. Showbiz - 7/10 7. The 2nd Law - 7/10 8. Simulation Theory - 5/10 9. Will of the People - 5/10
First half pretty good, second half just mediocre Absolution: 9.5/10 Origin of Symmetry: 8.5/10 Black Holes and Revelations: 8/10 Showbiz: 7.5/10 The 2nd Law: 6.5/10 The Resistance: 6/10 Drones: 5/10 Simulation Theory: 3/10
Maybe it's because I didn't appreciate music as much until it came out, but 2nd law will always be my favourite Muse album. My ranking would be: 1. 2nd law 2. BH&R 3. Absolution 4. Drones 5. The resistance 6. Origin of symmetry 7. Simulation theory 8. Showbiz
@@Sir_Eyeball I really hated 2nd Law when it came out . . . Opinion hasn't improved much since then. "Madness" only good song there. Very wierd and weak ending to the album. Best cover art?? Honestly all the covers are creative. Perhaps BH&R.
@@NaughtyVampireGod Whaaat. 'Supremacy' is an epic opener to The 2nd Law. I agree that the latter half is not very good but I kind of dig the Dubstep/Electronica influence. Maybe not that suprising because I also like Electronica a good bit.
@@Sir_Eyeball Part of it was a let down after The Resistance which Joe aptly calls the ultimate Muse album (or something like that). Sorry, Eyeball, but to me it just seemed like they stopped doing what they were great at and just turned out a generic sounding rock album. "Madness" is a 4 star song (out of 5) but honestly that was it for me here. (Shoulder shrug)
@@TastesLikeMusic Thanks...I saw it somewhere but forgot where. In the poll, as always, I voted for the loser - or what I thought would be most interesting (How many Queen rankings are already out there anyway? )
@@roxannewalsh prepare yourself for Queen. As soon as I saw the 5 contestants in the poll I knew Freddie & co. would win it. Worldwide, they're just far more popular than the others.

Ok...the artists that critics just drool over all the time..(bowie borrowed from everyone...elvis costello...stax records. Bacharach...and yes I love them too..)...why does muse have to suffer for showing their influences...I like muse...I'm not in love...I think they are one of the better bands of late...side with Joe here...cheers
As time goes by, it's getting harder and harder to not sound like anything else. It is about bringing in a good mix of influences and make it your own. I see that in Muse too. There are exceptions like the hilariously obvious "when there can be only one" in 'United States of Eurasia'. If that part does not make you think of Queen, you don't know Queen. But I think Muse did a lot that could be called Muse-ish and not derivative from one act.

I like Muse, but at the same time I can never quite connect to most of the songs on an emotional level. They are to plastic and some what made up I think. Perhaps the Radiohead link is also due to them both sounding like the're music isn't of this world.
I'm just familiar with a few singles. Enough to know they are not for me. My favorite part of the video was learning that you guys will be doing Built to Spill. Kinda interested in Dwight Yoakam too
@@TastesLikeMusic For what it's worth I hope it was a learning experience as an album, they talk about wanting to do harder stuff and learning as they wrote it. Kinda hope they take the experiences from this one, and try again with whatever their next album is. Though I'll honestly be happy as long as it's GOOD.
joe i saw them on the absolution tour in los angeles at the wiltern theater appx 4000 people awesome show then came bh and revalations also my favorite album by them by far but that was their peak they got to big for their own good seeing them at the wiltern again was never gonna happen going to a stadium is not my cup of tea the albums after bh&r don't live up to anything close they went too big too epic too sci fi
yeah i never could get into Muse at all, I heard their singles on the radio a lot during high school but (like a lot of other people) they kept reminding me of Radiohead, one of my favorite bands. I'm not a huge Coldplay fan either but I even think they have a more interesting sound than Muse does
This is the coldest take ever. Muse and Radiohead could not be more different AND in terms of talent. Cold play can’t hold a candle to muse. I never understood this take
I need to give Muse another shot, given how much Joe likes them. I like some of their singles, but tried to listen to their first album and it just sounded too much like Radiohead-lite to me.
@@raithrover1976 Dude thank you. I gave Absolution a chance and I absolutely loved it. 4.5/5 for me could go up to a 5/5 with time. I checked out all their albums after that and Muse have become one of my favourite bands. Still don't really dig their debut that much though.
When you say England, you mean the UK chart, there is no 'English' music chart, by saying England you just discarded 3 countries. Also you said they didnt really make it in the US, well 4 top 10 US albums including a US #1, and platinum selling albums is the kind of failure I'd like haha...
I saw them live in 2007. It was a great show. Stopped listening after "Black holes", I wasn't a big fan of the direction they were going in. Saw them again ten years later and I hated it, didn't know or like most of the songs they were playing.
@@TastesLikeMusic I guess I just felt they were treading water, they hit their peak with Absolution/Blackholes and after that they just didn't grab me in the same way. I loved the first few albums when they came out, did a re listen recently and didn't really dig them. Tastes change, I suppose. Really like the channel, Joe. Should be much bigger... I think you guys will get there!
I'm rather surprised that Kramzer dislikes Muse as much as he does as it seems to me that the whole point of the band is to carry on the Bends/OK Computer sound that Radiohead abandoned. They're to Radiohead what STP and "Plush" were to Pearl Jam. I dunno, maybe that's what he doesn't like about them (a pale imitation?), but it sounds more that he doesn't see the connection, which might make him the only person on the planet of whom that could be said.
Yep! Every time Joe listens to an album he considered dogshit, he then has to cleanse his brain with some Muse. He’s like: “Ugh! Come on Wolstenholme, don’t fail me now!” 😂
I have to agree with Kramzer on his comment about the drumming. Dom Howard is definintely the weaker link in the band. He is not bad or ruining the songs by any means, but his playing is not very spectacular.
@@patepulkkinenvtec2403 The drums fills on this one are cool but I am not that impressed otherwise. I might see things wrong though because I am not a drummer.
@@Sir_Eyeball I agree that Matt's guitar and piano playing and the bass playing of Chris are maybe more technically challenging and sometimes have more musical information than Dom's drumming but I still think Dom doesn't sound out of place at all.
@@patepulkkinenvtec2403 I feel the same way. In the original comment I wrote that he doesn't ruin the songs in any way. It is just not as impressive as the rest imo.
Muse are not my "flavour of ice cream" either but still interesting to hear more about their discography. Probably wouldn't watch a 50 minute long video about them from anyone else. 🙂 Super excited for Dwight Yoakam next week. Somehow I've never really listened to Built To Spill even though I am pretty sure they are right up my alley based on what I know about them. Guess I will have to change that very soon.
Only managed 5 Muse albums....one of which I know intimately....ran out of time! Good music to be found....yes....some was not 'amusing' though 🤪 My list.... 5 Drones 5/10 Dead Inside starts the album with an 80s flashdance number feel to it....not a bad song but then it gets annoying....bland.... Reapers is a little ACDC throwback....then tapping fingers on table impatiently...Defector is a vocoder away from being Flash mode Queen....Revolt is a Killers C side song surely?...Aftermath was probably the way to go....as it works.....then I did indeed feel dead inside by the end....or maybe I'm just an effin psycho 🤪😂....lol..ok but bland album. 4 Black Holes & Revelations 6/10 Invincible sounds like a Keane tribute band song but Starlight is excellent Muse form. For me this album is a mixed bag of good to forgettable pop rock. production is muddy to me. 3 Showbiz 7/10 a debut album with surprising variety. Their identity is most the way there as is a continuous sequence of good songs. Falling Down is almost blues and singer restrains his howling throughout. Good debut first half especially. Uno is first dip into that too comfortable Muse sound that starts to grate towards the end but good stuff at end too. 2 Absolution 8/10 begins much as Origin ends - Apocalypse Please whilst pleasing, rings pretty similar to the final songs on the aforementioned. Hits on 1st half save this album from mediocrity as well as Stockholm Syndrome+ Endlessly which were clearly the way to go. Has growth potential (as new listener to this) 1 Origin of Symmetry 9.5/10 🏆the very first chords of this album grip you and tingle your spine- New Borns intro represents what may turn out to be Muse's peak brilliance being tapped into- perhaps it's too good and hard to better? For me the nice Feeling Good Nina Simone cover should go last. Loved this album a loooooong time♥️ Conclusion- Decent artist but this is a band who whilst cool to watch live in concert or on TV just don't evolve or experiment effectively over time.... They are Jeff Buckley meets metalic opera with a splash of Queen/Beethoven /Bach like riffage often enough and for sure don't venture beyond that formula much as proved by the pattern already solidified with their first 3 musically good records. They are commercially successful for good reasons but musically not enough growth to keep me interested......whole listens mostly become a bland experience too often and singers voice constantly howling the way it does (and I like howling) with supposed agony whilst lyrically singing about supposed apocalypses alot are partly responsible.
Like I mentioned several weeks ago, I'm not really a Muse fan. I like some of their hit songs, but the deep cuts did not interest me much. But I still found the video a-muse-ing. However, you're really testing my patience with the next two weeks. I'll try to hang in there, but I'm not making any promises. Have a good summer.
@@ryankramzer1256 I like Lyle Lovett in some of his movie roles, but I'm not listening to his records. Wait--wasn't there an episode on musicians in movies a few weeks back?
The legacy of Muse is ultimately ripping off other bands like Queen and Radiohead. That being said, I like a lot of their songs and dont care who they sound like. I mean I like Tool and also like bands that you can tell were heavily influenced by Tool. I dont care who you copy as long as its done well.
@@TastesLikeMusic sure is...and I just bought a 10cd Miles Davis boxset....as summer has hit it's been getting harder to do one discography a week....will do my best👍
@@TastesLikeMusic oh and bad company lest I forget...got their island years box set....inspired by Mott the Hoople of course ...and Free....good times🧐🤠
I can only rank half of their discography as I gave up on them for obvious reasons... 4. Absolution (1 star) 3. Showbiz (1,5 stars) 2. Origin of Symmetry (1,5 stars) 1. Black Holes and Revelations (2,5 stars) I listened to the other ones as well when they came out but all I remember is that it confirmed that fact that I did not need that band. Somehow they were so big that I felt that I needed to give them a chance. It was in vain. This band would have sounded outdated even if they had released their debut in 1974 and they never developed in any direction.
The guy on the left manages to make terrible choices in ranking the albums - he likes all the stuff I hate of Muse and hates the stuff I love - and yet he always makes quite interesting points. I’m kind of a lesser fan thanks to or because of him. Weird feeling
@@TastesLikeMusic I’m sorry man i was with you! I even have a similar ranking to yours, though I’d put Origin of Symmetry above everything else and Simulation above the 2nd Law. But that guy does make points that somehow resonated with me. Oh fuck, I shouldn’t have watched this. Am I no longer a Muser after being it for 20 years? Since OOT came out? After attending 7 concerts, from a small venue in Florence in 2003 (with like 500 people) to the two majestic gigs in Rome’s stadium in 2013 and 2019? What’s happening to me? 🤯

Greetings from Canary Islands.
The amount of pain Joe is in makes me want to hug him
Hell yeah! Just binged some Muse yesterday! Y'all read my mind! Ranking later.
These are all pretty good in my view:
8 - Simulation Theory
7 - Showbiz
6 - Drones
5 - The 2nd Law
4 - The Resistance
3 - Black Holes & Revelations
2 - Origin of Symmetry
1 - Absolution
My story with the band:
I'm one of the 10 or so Americans who discovered Muse at a time when Showbiz was their only album.
My rankings:
8) Black Holes & Revelations (I still like it, but it's the least interesting to me. Marks the end of "sincere Muse" and begins the "super-bombastic Muse" phase with the last track.)
7) Simulation Theory
6) The 2nd Law
5) Drones
4) Absolution
3) The Resistance
2) Showbiz
1) Origin of Symmetry (One of my top 10 albums)
Enjoyed it, as always! Would love to see you guys do Duran Duran, Killing Joke, The Cure and Judas Priest! 😃😎
My favorite band of all time. Reason being they were the band that got me into music on a deep level. I think they take styles from many different places, but it’s the way they blend them together that makes their music so appealing to me. The Queen influenced tracks are some of my favs.
1. Absolution (10/10) (fav song) Stockholm Syndrome
2. OOS (10/10) - Space Dementia/Citizen Erased
3. BHAR (10/10) but slightly less so - Knights of Cydonia
4. The Resistance (9/10) - Unnatural Selection
5. Showbiz (8/10) - Showbiz
6. The 2nd Law (8/10) - Survival
7. Drones (7/10) - Reapers/The Handler
8. Simulation Theory (6/10) - Pressure

Probably because those people are dumbasses. - Joe
Literally every muse album is a masterpiece and I’m not even being biased
First five for sure. Big drop off after that imo . .
i would say they’re all garbage and i’m not biased
@@NaughtyVampireGod No, The 2nd Law is a masterpiece, look past the dubstep chorus of Unsustainable, and there is so much incredible music in that album
I'd love to hear both of your opinions on the new album, personally it's my favorite
I understand that the sound of Muse is not for everyone, but outright saying that they have bad song writing is straight up ignorant.
I think he needs to see a live. concert.
I agree. - Joe
It seems that big Zeppelin and Queen fans tend to really enjoy Muse. Regardless, enjoyed the video! I'm glad to see people even taking about Muse
Sorry but he's not among the best drummers. Not even close. Not even for hard rock. - kram
@@TastesLikeMusic I never said he was John Bonham or Neil Peart. Or that he is even top 10. Just that he is respected and brings energy to their live performances. I like that you stuck to your guns and gave an honest opinion though. We see less of that as time goes on.
@@ColinCreighton he's certainly not bad, but I think dumbs down some of their material - Kramzer
Out of the early ones I know:
4. Showbiz
3. Black Holes and Revelations
2. Origin Of Symmetry
1. Absolution
first five albums are terrific, hard to rank but Origin of Symmetry is still probably my favorite.
8. Simulation Theory
7. Drones
6. 2nd Law
5. Black Holes and Revelations
4. Showbiz (From 4 to 1, they're all almost tied, I love them all so much)
3. The Resistance (Work of art, Exogenesis is brilliant)
2. Origin of Symmetry (Preferably the remix album, amazing from start to finish)
1. Absolution (Perfect)
Yeah, we love Muse over here! Absolution is my absolute fave. Cheers guys!
As a Muse defender, I’m looking forward to this. Yeah they’re melodramatic and campy with how excessive and indulgent they can be but when their sound works it really works. The Radiohead comparison is fitting at least on the first two albums, but it’s clearly only one out of a bunch of influences.
8. Drones (horrible, have no idea how anyone defends it. if anything is truly pretentious and corny, it’s this one)
7. Simulation Theory (some of the remixes save it)
6. 2nd Law (interesting direction but baffled Kramzer likes this)
(Hug gap, bottom 3 are genuinely bad to me)
5. The Resistance (it’s not nearly as bad as Kramzer makes it out to be, never got the hate for this one)
4. Black Holes & Revelations
3. Showbiz (surprised Kramzer didn’t like Unintended, was convinced that would be a highlight for him. Feels very The Bends to me, even the same producer. I like how rough and restrained it is)
2. Origin of Symmetry
1. Absolution
Yeah I guess I’m really just baffled by a lot of Kram’s takes lol
Plenty of the Muse fans worst to best videos have it very high so I recommend you give it another try!
ik i asked for dino on the last video but a smashing pumpkins listography would be awesome
I enjoyed listening to the Muse catalogue :-
1. Absolution
2. Showbiz
3. Black Holes …
4. Origin of Symmetry
5. The Resistance
6. Simulation Theory
7. The 2nd Law
8. Drones
I quite like the dramatics of their music, which is probably why I liked the Mutt Lange produced Drones the least.

I couldn't get it together for Muse and I don't know if I could have taken all that bombast in such a short amount of time anyway lol I think I'm going to pass on Dwight and head straight for Built to Spill. A very cool choice! Not too popular either! This will bring you some hipster cred.
;-) ;-) ;-) Reeeally appreciate the extra time
Uprising is the biggest Alt song of all time according to billboard
I’m a big fan of Muse. Matt Bellamy is the reason I bought me an electric guitar. As a Teenager, I kind of tortured my parents by singing ‘Micro Cuts’ all the time, I feel bad about that in hindsight. I know all the albums in and out and there’s not a lot I dislike. The best part about Muse is the Bass imo, Chris Wolstenholme’s playing and its sound.
Watch out, it’s raining 5 star ratings in this comment! And it’s quite a long comment, I’m sorry for that.
Good Albums (3 Stars):
8. Absolution
(It’s a good album, but it severely lacks great song material found on other Muse albums. While the first half has some good songs, the second half thins out. In my opinion this one is wildly overrated by Muse fans. In my opinion their worst album, still good though.)
Really Good Albums (4 Stars):
7. Simulation Theory
(A strange album this is. Overall after three years better than I thought.)
6. The 2nd Law
(Dubstep and Electronica get some love on this one. I like it. There still are classic Muse songs in here like ‘Supremacy’ or the over-the-top ‘Survival’, but also the dubstep monster ‘The 2nd Law: Unsustainable’ is great. Not every song works, but it sure is an interesting album.)
5. The Resistance
(They try to bring in some opera, some symphony, some Queen (‘United States of Eurasia’), and it works. Not as strong as the predecessor, but still amazing songs in it. ‘Undisclosed Desires’ was the first Muse song I heard, and I still love it, 11-12 years later.)
Amazing Albums (5 Stars):
4. Drones
(‚Drones‘ marks a return to their early Muse days. An amazing Muse album, the best in their 2010s for sure.)
3. Black Holes and Revelations
(After the slight misstep that was ‘Absolution’, they tried to incorporate a lot more synths. The result is a fantastic album with songs ranging from great dance numbers (‘Starlight’) over nice n soft songs (‘Soldiers Poem’) to an epic rock opera (Knights of Cydonia). I love this album, no bad songs on here. Maybe 'Hoodoo' is not amazing, but still really good.)
2. Showbiz
(Their debut is a little rough around the edges, but that’s why I like it very much. It has such a raw feeling to it. All the songs except the last one are great. It already has the Muse sound that other albums will refine. The songs on here are so good, it has to be their number 2. The title song has a perfect build-up, will probably talk more about that song tomorrow.)
1. Origin of Symmetry
(There it is, Muse’s masterpiece.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 So there will be 10 songs from Absolution in your Top 10 songs list? :P

I was briefly into them from maybe albums 2-4 and then just sort of forgot about them. Saw them live in a 2000 seater and it was the loudest show I had ever been too, felt like stadium show in a large club.
Foo Fighters kinda did an "all out" thing this year. They realesed a disco album and even changed their name to Dee Gees for this one.
First 4 albums for me in any order were great & then after Black Holes i just found them quite boring & going through the motions....

For me, Muse are one of those bands that answer a question that seemingly no one asked. In this case, "What would happen if The Bends and A Night At The Opera were generically fused into a monstrous hybrid of radio fodder?"
😉
How on earth could anyone think that was a bad thing. That’s basically chocolate and peanut butter. - Joe

Anyway, this is my ranking:
1) Origin of Symmetry - 9.3
2) Showbiz - 8.6
3) Absolution - 8.6
4) Black Holes & Revelations - 8.5
5) The Resistance - 7.2
6) The 2nd Law - 6.7
7) Drones - 6.4
8) Simulation Theory - 5.9

But did Kramzer like them? I couldn’t tell.
Lol how did the discussion on Muse end up longer than The Replacements, and without Jason involved to boot? 🤔

@@Sir_Eyeball Part of it was a let down after The Resistance which Joe aptly calls the ultimate Muse album (or something like that).

Perhaps the Radiohead link is also due to them both sounding like the're music isn't of this world.

yeah i never could get into Muse at all, I heard their singles on the radio a lot during high school but (like a lot of other people) they kept reminding me of Radiohead, one of my favorite bands.
Give Absolution a few spins. It's streets ahead of their debut and perfectly melds the U2 / early Queen / Sparks formula.
I mean…. They’re popular in the US but nothing like over in Europe. America doesn’t really care for rock music anymore. - Joe
I saw them live in 2007. It was a great show. Stopped listening after "Black holes", I wasn't a big fan of the direction they were going in. Saw them again ten years later and I hated it, didn't know or like most of the songs they were playing.
It’s really not that different. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic I guess I just felt they were treading water, they hit their peak with Absolution/Blackholes and after that they just didn't grab me in the same way.
It is certainly the palest of imitations.
I don’t hear it either. The voice is the only thing that’s remotely similar. -Jason

I have to agree with Kramzer on his comment about the drumming. Dom Howard is definintely the weaker link in the band. He is not bad or ruining the songs by any means, but his playing is not very spectacular.
Go listen to Assasin, there's some pretty crazy drumming by Dom.
@@patepulkkinenvtec2403 The drums fills on this one are cool but I am not that impressed otherwise. I might see things wrong though because I am not a drummer.

Super excited for Dwight Yoakam next week. Somehow I've never really listened to Built To Spill even though I am pretty sure they are right up my alley based on what I know about them. Guess I will have to change that very soon.
Only managed 5 Muse albums....one of which I know intimately....ran out of time! Good music to be found....yes....some was not 'amusing' though 🤪
My list....
Has growth potential (as new listener to this)
1 Origin of Symmetry 9.5/10 🏆the very first chords of this album grip you and tingle your spine- New Borns intro represents what may turn out to be Muse's peak brilliance being tapped into- perhaps it's too good and hard to better? For me the nice Feeling Good Nina Simone cover should go last. Loved this album a loooooong time♥️
Conclusion- Decent artist but this is a band who whilst cool to watch live in concert or on TV just don't evolve or experiment effectively over time....
