- Our shipped chicks arrived with some dead and the rest cold and stressed. Here are some steps to take to try to lessen the losses.

My chick died just today and i couldn’t simply just type how to save chicks but didn’t and now shes dead and is hopefully happy in heaven with her family member
This literally saved the life of one of mine today, she was as lethargic as they can be. Fast forward 3 hours she's back in the flock chasing mealworms. I can't thank you enough.
I know this is an old video but I wanted to say thank you for the tip. I got 6 lavender orpingtons from a farm and I noticed right off the bat on the way home they were lethargic, falling over, hardly able to walk, and really not doing well. I went and bought Nutri Drench and made a quart size jar to use in their waterer. After 48 hours 5 of them made a full recovery and are so much more energetic and happy. One sadly did not make it 😞

Last week I got 10 chicks from Hoover Hatchery and 9 of them got out of their container (which I learned from) and I couldnt find them so they either got snatched or are now wild chickens but now I have this 1 poor chick that is VERY attached to humans so I'm doing what I can to keep her happy until the next batch of chicks get to me. They should be here Wednesday hopefully she will make it till then. Her name is Annie
Btw she is with some younger pullets because she gets really loud when she is alone so that's the best I can do. So far they are getting along well. Your video definitely helped with learning ways to help sock chickens which I had no clue how to do before thanks
Update: Annie is doing well and is now with the new chicks from the same hatchery and occasionally the older chickens😌
I just got 6 chicks from a local feed store, all of them are fine except for one, he just sits their while the other ones are moving around the container. Any tips?

I ended up giving one of my super weak babies some room temp raw egg yolk (which makes sense since that's how they get nutrients in the egg), and she perked right up! Those babies you have are the CUTEST ever! If I didn't want to keep my girls all the same breed as my rooster, I would sooooo get some of those fluffies too! So stinking adorable!
Egg yolk is a great thing to give them, as you found out. I just got 3 little Light Brahmas today and am excited to have them again. They are totally adorable!

My chick died today after nursing it with turmeric water for 5 days very gently. Today I made your slurry of egg yolk and unfortunately my husband pushed me to keep giving her more and more (we are both new to chicks and chickens). And she got really bad and aspirated it. So to anyone reading, please give them little bits frequently rather than a lot at once. I am so sad. She was so attached to me. Had to carry her around and she would just sleep in my arms.

About a week ago my chick was very sick. she was newly hatched. I've had chickens for a few years but never seen one last this long when ill.
She was having trouble breathing, so she used her mouth to breathe which was causing a clicking sound? her eyes were closed and she kept sleeping very lethargic.
I held her for 6 hours as she was in pain. We gave her electrolytes in her water and shes warm. she wouldn't eat food. i kept her away from the other chicks. not sure what else to do. I now have another chick that is sick tonight. Send her prayers.
In case anyone is wondering the vet cost $64 just for a checkup. :(( most vets don't specialize in helping chicks either & I've called many pet and farm businesses but not many people know how to help unfortunately.
I've done some research and I think my chick got pneumonia from Aspergillus Fungus maybe because we took them out in the grass one day when it was hot? We were also medicating them for pasty butt.

*I'd ordered 50 from Meyer hatchery this spring. It was awful. Half were lost. I tried everything, but I couldn't save them. :( I'm getting chicks from the feed store from here on out.*
It is horrible when that happens! So sad and frustrating. I think I lost about half of the 25 ordered in that video, too. It's happened with other batches, too. Shipping can be hard on them. I hope your cuties you got the other day are doing good!

I had 8, 7 are grown now, 1 died young because of it's heart, it was sick.
I just ordered my first ever chicks from Cackle Hatchery and out of ten, I've lost 4 already and one still seems lethargic despite hand feeding him water with a tiny bit of sugar in it. I think I'm going to buy local from now on too. My heart is broken from losing nearly 50% of my first ever flock so far. I started off with a heat plate too but when the ground is supposed to be 95 degrees, I don't get how that thing even works. So I switched to a heat lamp which scares the crap out of me. It's hard to keep temperature stable too with it. So sad. I want to raise chickens so bad but I don't want to learn at the expense of losing them. It kills me. :'(

I have found to make sure water is warm for chicks first drinks and to add teaspoon of honey in water really helps. Added with vitamins in water use same ones you do. Get that brooder all warm before they arrive 95 %. Also before chicks arrive get the Gro gel Plus DDP vitamins for chicks put in warm water in low plate chick really enjoy their warm green gell mixture, it gets vitamins and water in them really helps them out to get started easy for them to eat. Also boiled egg yolk crumbled in blender for first few days 3 x a day really helps get them going strong. Make sure no drafts around chicks. Sometimes crumbles to big for smaller breed found making a warm mash easier to eat for them in small low dish. Love those chicks makes you so sad to loose one all deserve to get a good start.

Im not sure if my chicks are sick because one of them always sleeps and i saw missing fur on it and the other one it is a little bigger that one doesn't seem to be chirping alot and that one is just quarantining it self.
Good tips here. Poor fellas! No telling the horrors they'd been through while traveling. I've thought about this long and hard, and when I do eventually get chickens, I'm going to order hatching eggs instead of baby chicks. Sure, it's more work, but I'm a softie. Just knowing what they endure, I'd be stressing the whole time waiting on them to arrive!
Shipping definitely comes with some horror stories. It's so much easier and safer finding locally hatched chicks if possible.
It depends how long they travel, and the kind of transport.

If you get shipped chicks expect some deaths. First year 12 out of 12 survived. This year 15 out of 16 survived shipment but 3 others look weak. So probly 12 out of 16 will make it. This is higher than the survival rate if they free ranged.

I just lost my chick about a week ago. I held her in my hands for 6 hours. 😭 I've had chicks for a while but I've never had one get this sick. I just checked tonight and another one of our chicks is sick. I'm devastated. 😫 I wish someone could help but vets don't know much how to help chicks or they're too expensive 💔 I'm sorry for your loss too I hope they all go to heaven together ❤️🙏
One of my chickens that was a mom had 10 babies and one died today:( it was sad because I wanted to see it grow up
What a cute chicks you have there. This is a usual weakness associated with Chicks probably due to stress from transportation or poor hatchery technique.
You did well by giving them electrolytes, that is what they really needed
I had prefer you spread a paper on the litter and sprinkle some feed on it for easy pick and avoid pick the wrong particles.
Also put some small stones on drinking line to avoid wetness and chill.

I had 3 chicks the sad thing is that 2 of them died and I am left with one, one died today and one died yesterday, I am worried that my last chick is going to die because right now he is chirping like the one that died today, and I am worried because I don’t have a heater to keep them warm, but at the same time he might be sick, and I really would cry if he died. Hope he doesn’t because I cried so much when his brother and sister died, I did berry them, and hope he doesn’t die
I just got baby chicks just 4 cause I never got them but they don't want to eat the baby chick feed what should I do?
How long until they recover? Found one cold. It's breathing but very out of it for 4 hours or so.

Mr brothers friend mom got me one then j took it then start getting cold and I didn't know wut to do
my chick is really loud sometimes and it can’t stand or walk. when it needs to move it just waddles and scoots very slowly but it can’t stand. it closes its eyes most of the time, i hand feed it water that has minerals and stuff in it and vitamins. I hold it most of the day and put it in a shoe box with a heating pad on low and a towel over it, it stops peeping and leans against my hand and sleeps in the box so i think it likes it. But i really dont want it to die because i put it back in its cage at night with all the other chicks. they look healthy but my chick does not, it sits, does not drink or eat, and the other chicks huddle away from it when they want to sleep but i always go down and put it with them so she doesn’t die of the temperature. I also fed it a raw egg yolk and she ate a couple drinks of it. this is the second night i’ve had her and i’m crying right now please help me!😢😭

I'm so sorry your chick is not doing well. It's sounds like you're doing everything you can - and all the right things - to help her. The only thing I would add is to try to find some Nutri-Drench to give her. Besides giving the chick some energy until it can get going on its own, it's also a great way to address some vitamin deficiencies that may be causing the trouble it has walking.

I bought 10 chicks, 2 died the first day, the next morning the 5 were dead. So no I only have three chicks and one of them is very sick. He's not doing well at all. I'm trying to save him but idk what to do. He has blood on his bum.
Is it red blood or could it be diarrhea? How old are the chicks and we’re they shipped to you or where you bought them?

Where did you get your chicks from? I ordered my first 9 (they sent 10) from Cackle hatchery and I've lost 4 in 24 hours, and one is not looking too well. I've given her a little bit of sugar water and a bit of raw egg but the others are doing so well so I don't know what happened to the others. They are Rhode Island Reds and the lightest ones without the patterned darker prints on their down are the ones who seem to be the ones I'm losing. @ChickenHues, if you have any ideas, I'd love to have them. I am heartbroken right now. I will absolutely be getting more but I'm getting them from a local seller instead because I think the travel from Missouri to NC is just too much for them.

I received 20 dead out of 30. I'm not ordering online anymore, I'm just going to buy what local stores have. They got shipped in June 15 and picked them up today. It looks like they got overheated.

The clicking noise is usually not a good sign. Just try to keep the chick warm and dry and offer food and water. How is it now?
My chick just died today, we were moving it to another house, and died on the way... I felt so guilty.
I just picked up babies from my feed store 21 of them very tiny maybe day old? One died today last night it did not seem good she was laying on her side feet outstretched at least I think it was her? I dropped water on her beak and she drank right up until she had enough. Put her back in and she went to the feed bowl thought all good she was just thirsty? she was back at being the same feet outstretched laying on her side. Tried to drop water on her beak but really not interested and she just started to die I held her and was very sad. Why don't the suppliers wait until they a few more days old before having them make their journey? All the others look good and running around until they drop and sleep.
I’m sorry about your chick. I can tell why they ship them right away. They absorb remaining egg yolk right before hatching to use for food. They don’t need food or water for the first 2-3 days of life, so there is a window to ship them.
@@ChickenHues Thanks for the info. I picked up 6 Easter Eggers yesterday and put them in the same pen as the other girls but put up a panel to keep separate from the older ones and put the 3 remaining Rhode Islands in with them because they are small too. Came in to check on them and one of the Rhode Is. was soaking wet and they were standing on her???? This was a store bought waterer small you screw on the top kind made for babies??? So anyway I took her out and held her warmed her up . I separated her from the rest put netting around or through the water bowl so she could drink and her so called mates could drink. She is doing fine this morning. Yeah!!! I feel sad she has no friends to huddle with? Better than dead I guess. I will put back in today with her small sisters and watch.
We got a dozen chicks, and I'm only 18 and get very attached to animals. My mom got them and I went in and stayed with him and played and fed and stuff. One chick started doing this weird panting and convulsing and it had clicking noises as it was opening its beak over and over without stopping.
I thought she was overheating so I took her out and held her in a cooler room for a little bit and she still opened and closed her beak and convulsed but the clicking stopped and it seemed like it was falling asleep. I went back in to the cage and put her in and gave her some water and she was running around to her family and making some sort of noise. I fell asleep and when I saw my mom in the morning I asked if she checked on the chick and she said it didn't make it through the night.
We've never had chicks and I did as much research as I could to try and help her, and I did get attached and I just am devastated that she had to go through that and didn't make it. She must have been so scared.
Do you have any idea as to what might have happened?
The more I looked into it it seemed like it was overheating so I shaded part of the cage to make a cool area and put cool sugar water in there to see if that would make her drink more but, i don't know, something went wrong.
I'm sorry about your chick! It sounds like it could have been pneumonia. When they make the clicking sound when they breathe it usually doesn't turn out well. It sounds like you did all you could.
I have a baby chick in my room kind of as a starter pet it just died a few minutes ago i had it as a pet because i have been dealimg with a lot of stress and me best friend left me. I hate my self for what happened to the baby chicken. I will do anything to bring it back.
I've just lost 2 out of my 4 chicks in the last 2 days. It is a terrible feeling but unfortunately that is part of the big industry problem. One was sick when I got it but appeared to be getting better and the other just never got bigger. Hopefully the other 2 will survive and with luck I can at least get an egg but now I would rather breed the two. Try not to feel too bad about it. It will get better every day.
We got four new chicks today to add to our little flock, they gave us a very sickly chick for free to try to nurse her back to health, unfortunately she died the night we got her, very sad. We did all we could but she looked alot like the chickens in this video, I wish I could have watched this sooner.

Tractor supply - 10 chicks from Minnesota through Hoover Hatchery. 9 dead, 1 very poor. Never had that before. Must have got in a cold spot too long. ISA Brown, maybe a weak breed?

My mom's friend sold her baby chicks for 3 bucks for one and my mom brought 3 and they are all in healthy condition. You should buy them directly from someone!

Hello, A few days ago we got 9 baby chicks but this morning the chicken killed half of them accept one that was till alive but injured his neck. We’re not sure if it because he’s a new born hes not that strong yet or if he’s seriously hurt . Any tips? please help!

Sorry to hear you have a sick chick. I would dilute some Nutri-drench to a weak tea color and carefully try to get her to drink a few drops. With that weak of a chick it's easy for them to breathe it in and that will kill them. So, just place a drop on the side of her beak and hopefully she'll open her mouth. Do that several times a day (every few hours). Sometimes that gives them enough of a boost to start eating on their own. Unfortunately, they usually won't make it when they're that weak, though.

Chicks rely 100% on an exact heat source for warmth. People who hold them or handle them away from that heat source, are just torturing and killing them ! They survive shipping because they are packed in close and come overnight.
They definitely need a heat source to survive, but they can be away from that heat until they get cold. They’ll let you know by peeping. A broody hen will have her chicks running around in 40 degree weather. They’re more resilient than we might think. ☺️

If your chicks are 4 weeks then they shouldn't be having problems from shipping. What are you they acting like? Maybe look into coccidiosis and see if that sounds like it could be their problem.

Eggs are a chick's first food. It's what they use for food while developing in the egg. :)
