Thank you very much for another excellent 'how to' video Dr Paul! I had my 'mind's eye'on this game since it was announced as a KS few years ago with a heavy strategy weight and the beautiful art by Vincent Dutrait! Your deep 'psychoanalysis' of the game makes regret I did not back it, but my god if this is not a difficult new case, from the 'set up'... 😂
Excellent video! This is one of my most anticipated games, but I know it's going to be a bit of a trial to teach my group, so this guide is going to be a big help!
Just put my video on at the start of the game session. It will be the same time as an in-person teach, and you don't have to worry about getting the rules wrong :)
Got the game this week, will attempt a first game tonight and man am I thankful for this How to Play. Extremely well structured, presented, to the point, great visuals.. usual Paul quality. I was a bit worried this game would be 'too light' (I rather enjoy ubber heavy Euros even if I'm not really good at any of them). Having gone through the setup part it certainly looks heavier than I would have expected, hopefully the 'heavy' isn't just about the setup but the actual depth of gameplay hehe.
Paul, I wrote an extensive satire book on Freud years ago called “Everything you wanted to know about sex, but forgot to ask.” I really need to think about publishing it.
Fantastic job as always! A rules question, if you don't mind: For the Heart Shaped Boxes, is there a specific reason you would want to spend one to gain two points, in order to gain another back? I ask because I would think it otherwise would have been a little cleaner to say something along the lines of "If you would gain a Heart Shaped Box and are at max capacity, gain two points instead". It might be mostly semantics, but that alternative is a little easier for my brain to quickly wrap my head around.
What you have described is exactly right - and if you want to explain it like that, feel free. I might actually do the same the next time I teach it. For this video, I tried to stick to what was in the rulebook.
I waited . . . and waited . . . and waited . . . By the time you got to the first action I was in a subconscious state and needed 4 (or was it 5) cups of coffee to bring me back 😂 I won't be playing this one, thanks 👍🏼👍🏼
Wow, much heavier than I thought. Getting Lacerda vibes but I haven’t played one in a few years. Not sure I will be able to get this to the table…can’t even imagine adding the expansion. Will definetly watch a play-through.
Thank you, Paul, for this very helpful video that’s made learning the rules so much more digestible! Wasn’t sure if you could clarify this but when you recall ideas and are counting the spaces your ideas occupy at the meeting table, does a space with your bright ideas (no idea token, just bright idea) count? My read is that it doesn’t and that the only spaces that count are those with your actual idea tokens but I wasn’t sure 🤷🏾♂️ thanks again for the videos - I’m currently halfway through your playthrough video ☺️
Thanks for this, picked it up at Essen. I noticed you mentioned removing plastic from your grief cards but I can't seem to be able to do this with ours? Do the retail versions already have this backing you mentioned removed or do I just need to try harder?
Question: if you were to use two bright ideas to perform an action, could you theoretically do the same action next turn using your regular ideas? Since the bright ideas would be removed at the end of the turn?
when you remove a colored insight from your dial in order to do an action or claim a bonus, does it go back onto your player board or is it lost for the rest of the game?
Thanks for the video. I have a question that has been bugging me, icongraphy-wise. @ 19:50 when I take a tile with activating the banner and in the same time the banner has an instant activation icon depicted in it, do I activate the banner effect twice? Because there are tiles without the instant activation mark but you can still activate them with the banner activation coffee cost so I'm lost why they chose to depict the icons in such a way for the location different than the insights!
I'm not 100% sure I fully understand the question, but I will try. The icon shown in the banner of the top right tile at 19:50 means that you trigger the location effect of the theatre. Count the number of theatre tags you have, and add 1 for the icon shown on the tile. I don't believe there are any Notebook tiles with location tags on them that do not have the lightning bolt on. There are tags on other things in the game, goals, research cards, etc but those are just tags that you count.
@ yes that part is clear but why they decided to keep the lighting bolt on the location banner side of the notebook but not on the insight banner side of the notebook? That print is confusing because you already activate them with coffee instantly why the lighting bolt on the locations notebooks! I hope it is clear lol but thanks nontheless
@@DewaniyaNight sorry, I don’t know what you mean by “location banner side” and the “insight banner side”. I’m also not sure I understand what you mean by activating them with coffee. You buy the tiles with coffee and then place them on your board.
Hi Paul, If you use 2 bright ideas on the main board for an action, since it's not your own player idea pointing towards that action space, does that mean you can do that action again using your own coloured player ideas?
I'm pretty sure you can, since the Bright Ideas get cleared off of the board at the end of your turn anyway, so they're not even there to be recalled for coffee, or to record what actions you've already done.
@@happybeingdumb i see. okay, makes sense. what about the other way around? you first puf your ideas then you want to use bright iseas for the same action space?
@@Darkhan9 I would assume that could NOT be done, since you'd be trying to take an action you're already pointing at, which isn't allowed. Even if you feel like the Bright Ideas aren't pointing at the action (though I think you're still supposed to point them toward it), the rule is just that you can't take an action you already have ideas pointing to.
are there still protective foils on the grief layer cards with the production run? I can't really find anything obvious sticking on them and I don't want to get too destructive
I have a doubt.....in min 16, you explain that if I have a idea token pointed at an action, I can't make that action in subsequent turns with other idea tokens since there is already a token pointed that way, my doubt is if I use bright ideas tokens, can I make the action even if I have other idea tokens pointed to that action? Or since I have tokens pointed there I can't do it even whit bright ideas?
Someone else asked that earlier :) You cannot place bright ideas and point to an action that you are already pointing to. However... you CAN place bright ideas to point to an action, then... at the end of your turn, those ideas are removed. And then on your next turn, place normal ideas pointing to it.
When you are citing the work of other players and have to work right to left, can you only do that if you need the one on the very right? For example maybe I need a players red, but I have to take a purple first, but I don’t need the purple. Can I take both and just use the one I needed for publishing my work? If so what happens with the one I didn’t need? Do I keep it and it’s tag in front of me?
Hi, two questions this game and Hegemony are too difficult to learn for not hard core gamers? I think I never played something with a complexity more than 2.6/5. The game intrigue me a lot but I’m scared I’m not gonna understand it reading the manual. I Esther a bit your video and you explain very well !
they are not the easiest games for sure. Hegemony worse than this one because this one is basically a complex euro, which means that the basic mechanics are kinda similar to various other games, whereas Hegemony is a very different beast with unusual mechanics and the high level of asymmetry. By a look, it seems to me that the difficult part here is that there are a lot of small rules here and there, almost like exceptions, that it is going to be difficult to remember. and the various layers of the game are connected, which takes time to understand. But the basics are not different than other games (worker placement, resource management, taking actions with symbols). It reminds me a bit of ruins of arnak or viticulture, maybe you can try one of those as a stepping stone before moving to this one.
ah, and the video helps a lot; as the various layers are interconnected, don't expect to read the rules from start to finish and make sense of it at first reading, it needs a bit of back and forth.
My group may need therapy after this teach. Thanks for making a clear presentation. Only unsolicited note I'll leave here is that I did not enjoy hearing some of the rules multiple times throughout the vid.
Thanks for the feedback. I've taught the game about 4 times prior to writing the script, and I learn from that some parts which people get stuck on, so I like to throw in some rules reminders into the videos on the parts that I know people sometimes forget. Hopefully it wasn't too many.
I disagree as this is actually very important. Not everyone watches the entire video. If someone is referencing a part of the video, and a rule is relevant to more than one part of the video, it’s important to repeat that rule so you hear it no matter which part of the video you are watching.
Question: On the meeting table, I can use my ideas to point to an action and take it, but I can’t later do that same action again until I’ve recalled my ideas. What if I take an action ONLY using one or two BRIGHT ideas? Can I, on my next turn, then use my regular ideas to take that same action? I wonder because bright ideas are not associated with player colors.
Good question. It has been asked twice already though in the other comments :) Bright ideas are removed after your turn so there is no memory of the action you did.
Awesome, thanks! It’s an interesting way to get around that restriction. Definitely increases the value of those bright ideas and I can see why they’re harder to get. They’re very versatile. Can’t wait to play this!
@@GamingRulesVideos Ahh sorry didnt make myself very clear! I was talking about the client with 8 hearts at that timestamp. Its probably an optical illusion but in the video it looks like the grief layer has 4 hearts and the client card has 4 hearts...but in order to remove the grief layer you'd need to spend 5 hearts. Seemed odd at the time of writing but...much ado about nothing. Great video as always 🙂
@@donkeyplopp Right... so... you have come across one of the "tricky" parts of the game. Yes, that client requires 8 hearts to fully cure them. And those 8 hearts are made up of 4 from the card and 4 from the grief layer. However, that does NOT mean it takes 4 hearts to remove the grief layer. Grief layers are removed when the therapy marker reaches the "3" space on the track (with the yellow heart)
Rules question which isn't covered.. sorry if it's obvious. But what happens if your dream cards you choose don't offer enough therapy points to cure a client? Do I somehow have to generate heart shaped boxes to cure??

@@GamingRulesVideos A few examples: Freud walks to the next city location like Sandra in Kanban. You place idea markers like research spaces in Kanban. You proceed to the meeting table just like in Kanban. I’m getting the factory feel from this game.
@@Strandvideo It's true Freud moves around, but it doesn't happen automatically at the end of the round, nor does he evaluate your performance when he moves to your area - though that would be fun!
I received today my deluxe version of this…. I am even scared to touch it… it’s so beautiful….
So, what you're telling me is this is just like checkers. 🤔
Almost. With just a couple of small differences ;)
When can we expect Seti how to play?
I prefer to keep comments on this video related to the game in question if thats ok :)
@@GamingRulesVideos Got it!👍 Btw, excellent how to play as usual👌.
It's starting to get distracting how good you are at making tutorial videos... 😅
Distracting? :)
I'll take that as a compliment!
I thought Freud refered to the 'subconscious' mind, rather than the 'unconscious'
he used them interchangeably
Great work Paul! You cured my from my latent dream - reading the rulebook 😅 …btw sharp outfit 🤌🏼
The rulebook is actually very good (I didn't write this one) :)
