    Excelled video with clear, concise overview with all the important points. Just ordered the N95 Alder Lake model (512- 16 GB) for 200 Euros (Including delivery). Just wondering if you can boot from the SSD storage drive? I was thinking to clone the drive it comes with to a 2 TB SSD and have the option to boot from either drive by having a dual boot option or change to boot order in the BIOS. Just don't know if the drive will boot from the SSD module? I guess it is best to keep the M.2 drive as the mai OS drive and just use the SSD storage as just storage?

    • @ConstantGeekery
      @ConstantGeekery  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you 😊 I never tested that so I can’t be certain, but I see no reason why not. The SSD module is basically a USB drive, so it should be able to serve as a boot device.

      @@ConstantGeekery Just as a curious update with a couple of points. I tried to boot from the sata ssd drive but no matter how I tried with various options and operating systems, it seems this storage bay (type c connection) is just for that, Storage. So I just put in a 2 TB ssd which is great and read write speeds of around 450--500 excellent to have for moving around stuff fasr.
      The ease of swapping out a 2.5 inch ssd with this modular approach is very nice. However , here is an interesting thing; Regarding the NVE 2280 drive, which it comes with, and speeds of also just 500 I cloned this drive and swapped this 500 GB NVE with another NVE 550 GB drive and when I done a speed test it was 1400-1500! Flying along.
      So while you don’t get the full speed of a Gen 3 NVE it seems the NVE it comes with is just SATA speeds but using another Gen 3 NVE 2280 you can get that nice 3 times bump up in performance.
      Considering that, plus the fact that it was able to handle Video editing no problem too (not the fastest to render/produce final video but decent enough) I would recommend this as a great bargain well worth it for 200 Euros . Playing 4k was also great.

    Cheers for the video 😀
    I wouldn't be buying a Mini PC with a N5105 processor, when devices with the N100 processor are now available... unless it was significantly cheaper.
    Here in the UK, the river-named-retailer is discounting the Beelink Mini-S12 and Trigkey units with N100 / 16G / 500G to around 195 GBP (240'ish USD), which is around £15 more than the AK1 Pro reviewed!
    I know there's not much diference in the CPU's headline specs (Same Core/Thread count and similar speeds). But 13th gen vs 10th gen, more cache, lower TDP and AV1 decode, makes me think it's worth a few more dollhairs 👍
    If you've got a specific use and every buck saved is worth it... then your mileage may of course vary 🙂

    • @ConstantGeekery
      @ConstantGeekery  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fair points. There’s a huge amount of competition at this level… and lots of discounting! The choice might come down to features like the expandable storage on this one… which might make the difference for some buyers.

    This mini pc is sold by several brands, I have a couple different AK1 pros and they came from Kamrui and Ace Magician, there are some other brands that uses the same hardware as well but just rebranded. Still they are decent computers for the price, I would have to look back at my test but I think the AK1 Pro actually didnt do bad for cloud gaming, I did some halo and stuff using xbox and it actually worked but definitely not for gaming. I noticed a lot of the mini pc's have a slower wifi speed but mine normally get around 150 speeds which is doable but still crap considering I have gig speeds and my macbook pro can get 800+

    A tip from a sys admin, your unifi setup can run some very high 5Ghz channels. Make sure it is connecting to 5Ghz and not your 2.4Ghz band by mistake. I've noticed some of those after market wifi adapters cannot handle the really high 5Ghz channels. For example, my older amazon firestick will not negoatiate with anything above channel 44. I had to drop my 5Ghz channel down to match the weakest link of my network devices to get full functionality.

    I got the N97. I only really play one game, GTA 5, and it will run that in 720p. All of the versions of this mini PC appear to be perfectly competent. If it will run office, music editing software and play some games I'd say that's one more thing than my laptop does. I've never struggled to edit 4k video on any rubbish laptop, but I'm assuming that's because I only do very basic editing, don't care how long it takes and just use whatever program is easiest.
    Essentially, I wanted a PC possible to run off a powerbank that, all in, was cheaper than a similar spec level laptop. If I'd wanted a gaming powerhouse I would have found it severely disappointing, but as an office PC it's great and if it gets broken you just buy another one. Low power consumption matters to lots of people, especially businesses and charities. The computer is on for 8-12 hours a day and, in theory, you could just take this home and continue working if you want

      Replying to myself, Following this review I bought this item but got the upgraded Alder Lake CPU. Never bothered with W11, instead booted straight into Linux Mint + Cinnamon install from bootable USB. Install was simple and boring. Changed boot order to boot into new Linux as first choice and job done. Its superb. The OS is cruising along at a couple of % CPU and about 1.5GB Memory being consumed. I'm using it for cloud development so with a handful of languages, VSCode and other bits and bobs, its phenomenal. It's completely silent, boots in seconds and the experience in Cinammon is really beautiful. Highly recommended!

    Im sorry this is kinda e-waste at this performance level. bought a Beelink Ser5 pro (8/16 core 5800H With 15gb/512GB SSD) 2 months ago during AliExpress sales. it was $310. the memory was ADATA (Samsung chips) and the SSD Kingston 2700 MB/sec. I handles any game at 720p.

      Fair point if you want to game, but that’s over 50% more money, which at this level makes a huge difference to what’s possible. For some applications the performance is plenty.

    • @ConstantGeekery
      @ConstantGeekery  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@TheGrizz485 I wasn't disputing that it's better, just highlighting the economics involved. $70 - $120 might seem like a small uplift (which it is if you need that performance) but at this price point those increases make a BIG difference to the specs.
      For me, I would prefer to have the additional performance for that price like you, but we have to recognise that not all users have the same requirements. 👍🏻
      For example, take a school that needs simple desktops for classroom use... this PC might be fine for that use case. Consider that if you multiply that increase in price across a room full of mini PCs in a school, for performance that isn't needed, and it's quite the uplift.

    • @GarrettBlackmon

      🙄 are you trying to use this as an actual computer? These specs are perfect for many home server applications.
      Imo systems like yours that are just good enough to play games current gen games (in 720p lol) or whatever are more in the e-waste category. Just build a $500 gaming computer at that point.

      You may well be right. From the dim recesses of my memory, I seem to recall that Microsoft had a vastly reduced licence cost on budget machines... not available to general public, but I thought systems integrators could get deals. I could be wrong about that, though there are plenty of very cheap laptops from major brands with Windows licences.

    I have now taken a long time (2 weeks) to operate the device properly.
    System error of various modules MSVCP140.dll, VCRUNTIME140_1.dll, VCRUNTIME140.dll, not found.
    WLAN very, very weak compared to only 1/10 the speed of other components for me.
    25MBit/sec. achieved - All other components run with at least 100 MBit/sec up to 990 MBit/sec.
    SKY cannot always be received without severe pixel interference.
    So workaround: External USB WLAN stick that works on all other devices does not work properly on the device. Strangely 2.4 GHz doesn't work, 5 GHz yes - but only for 2 minutes, then WLAN DEAD.
    Standard storage Samsung 1TB SSD980 NVMe M.2 SSD cannot be used in the device.
    New installation of Windows 11 with standard USB boot stick --> Many errors: no drivers for PCI device, SM bus controller and an unknown device. Audio doesn't work anymore.
    WLAN connections still break down after about 2 minutes.
    Solutions:
    Reinstall special "Chinese-Windows 11" with their drivers (on Google Drive).
    Using separate USB-WLAN-Stick >> more performance
    Conclusion:
    Device is working now. After many, many days of writing back and forth, found out that on Google Drive (Chinese special solution):
    a) there is a complete installation package for Windows 11 including the required drivers.
    b) there is a driver package for Windows 11, because a standard Windows installation alone is not sufficient and drivers cannot be found automatically.
    There are also two instructional videos on Google Drive.
    I get no answer from the Chinese as to why they don't have a homepage like Hewlett Packard, for example, where you can download the required drivers "menu-driven" for every operating system.
    ... AND One sentence a day about my problems is just not enough. They could also have written everything at once - compactly, what needs to be done!!!
    ODD SUPPORT but always friendly. 😏
    What the future will bring with Windows and this device - who knows...

    Have ordered it. No fortune. Installed. Windows has updated. Than fault messages VCRUNTIME140.dll, MSVCP140.dll on three funcions mouse, audio. Not fixed yet. Than ultra low speed on WLAN: 25 MBit/sec. Than plugged in a USB to Wlan stick. 2,4 GHz no connection to my wlan. 5 GHz connection ok but only about 2 minutes connection to internet than break down. But speed with USB to Wlan would be 240 MBit/sec. Than test with ethernet connection. Same - connection breaks down at about 2-3 minutes.
    Device would be nice. Service would be quick. But the device is currently unusable. Support hasn't responded yet. Support page given on AMAZON is incorrect or no longer available. Error 404.
    Any idea, what to do?

      The missing DLLs are to do with Visual C++ packages. When I see an installation doing weird things and missing core packages, I wipe the machine and do a fresh install. You might prefer to return the device.

      I don't see why not - a lot of folks use mini PCs for this. It should have enough performance for most retro console emulation. There are even more powerful options available at a similar price point too.
