    Hi Janelle - I’ve read quite a few of the Bill Slider mysteries and quite like them! The first book came out in 1991 so may be slightly dated now but they tend to be pretty good British police procedurals. I keep meaning to try the C.S. Harris books as they sound amazing!

      That's good to know about the Bill Slider series. I'll try another one.

    The Ian Moore book has been out for a while here but I haven't read it yet. I really want to as I think (hope) I'll like it. A snow storm in April. It's weird weather here at the moment. Very spring-like and pleasant one minute, freezing the next!

      Ahhh, spring. Oh well. I think that will be it for the snow but you never know. We've had snow in May before.

    Hi, Janelle. I really liked your assessment of Aggie Morton and Bulldog Drummond. I thought of Tommy and Tuppence as soon as you said he was a demobilized officer in 1920 and bored. You have good reading instincts about the characters.

      Thanks Donna. Have you read Aggie Morton or Bulldog Drummond?

      @thestudiointhelibrary1387 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TooFondofBooksJH No. But I have had Aggie Morton on my radar for the last year. And I found the first Bulldog Drummond on Hoopla, so marked it for future reading. Being born in the late 40s, I must have seen some of the old black and white movies and have heard the character name my whole life.

    I'm not a fan of memoirs in the present tense! Actually, present tense is not what I would choose in any story, although it wouldn't necessarily keep me from a good book.

    • @TooFondofBooksJH
      @TooFondofBooksJH  ปีที่แล้ว

      Present tense is tricky and I often struggle with it when I come across it in books.

    What an interesting variety! I have read Snow Blind by Archer Mayor and Snow Blind by PJ Tracy but not YOUR Snow Blind - lol. Glad you got an early look at the new Harris! That's especially fun since she's your favorite historical mystery author!!
    I find Lena a very sad character. Wasn't she horribly abused in one of the early books?

    • @TooFondofBooksJH
      @TooFondofBooksJH  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes she was and I try to feel some compassion for her but she just continually makes bad decisions that end up hurting other people.

    Great reading roundup!! You read some really interesting books! I agree about some of the content with Aggie Morton, I definitely think it's for the much older end of middle grade / even YA.

    • @TooFondofBooksJH
      @TooFondofBooksJH  ปีที่แล้ว

      What is the age group that middle grade is targeting?

    • @miriamelizabethreads
      @miriamelizabethreads ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TooFondofBooksJH I could be wrong but I believe typically 8-13? I probably wouldn't give this book to someone under the age of 12-13, maybe even 14 depending on the child. The entire series definitely feels too mature for younger middle grade.

    These all sound like interesting books! I love Miss Read.. over the years I've been working my way through Thrush Green series. Love that advert in the Bulldog book. 🤣 Very Tommy and Tuppence indeed! Good to hear that CS Harris weaves in history in her books so naturally. I'm going to have to borrow the one my mom recently bought. I think it's the 4th, Where Serpents Sleep. Does it matter what order you read this series in? 📚🥰

    • @TooFondofBooksJH
      @TooFondofBooksJH  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could start with the 4th one and see if you like it, but ultimately I would recommend reading the series in order.

    I am just dying to read the Sebastian st cyr series, I have gotten my sister to buy me the first 3 books for my birthday. I am even worse with characters I don't like, I stopped reading PD James after death in holy orders even though I enjoyed it because Dalgliesh's potential girlfriend got on my nerves😅. I am also going to try and get no holly for miss Quinn, sounds like a lovely read😎. Also, I am sure Ian Fleming also was inspired by Agatha Christie, a hero of her short story collection published in 1934 is called, ahem! James Bond. Story titled the Rajahs emerald from the Listerdale mystery and other stories😅.

    I haven’t read any of these, but I’d really like to try CS Harris and the Jonasson books. I’m not too much of a thriller reader so a sorta tame one might be right up my alley😊 Miss Read is a beloved favorite of mine. Have a great week💕

      The Jonasson one was definitely a tame thriller so it could be perfect for you.

    Present tense in a memoir? Ugh. Does that Karin Slaughter series have lots of gruesome scenes in it? I’ve avoided her because I don’t like children abuse or murders. I’m somewhere between cozy and Karin!! I’m very interested in Headlong. I love police procedurals.

    • @TooFondofBooksJH
      @TooFondofBooksJH  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think there's any children abuse but there is definitely murder. Sometimes pretty gruesome. She doesn't go into graphic detail but you do know exactly what happened.

    • @glendaw5221
      @glendaw5221 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TooFondofBooksJH I don’t mind some gruesome info. The Louise Penny books are sometimes darker than I would really like but I love the characters so I’m ok with it. I think I’ve asked before but can’t remember. Do you like Deborah Crombie? Those are pretty dark but the characters are good and smart. I don’t like characters who walk right into a trap even children would avoid!😂

      @@TooFondofBooksJHHere's another vote for Deborah Crombie! A Share In Death is the first one. They are Scotland Yard mysteries. They are quick reads, not cozy and not too graphic.

    The Bill Slider series is supposed to be excellent. I was in a mystery bookstore in Oklahoma years ago and the first had just come out - Orchestrated in Death, as I recall. I was a die hard historical mystery reader back then so I passed on it, even though the owner highly recommended it.
    I have a question about the Sebastian St. Cyr series. I’ve only read the first in the series and did not like it at all. Do you think that it is representative of the rest of the series? Or did it get off to a weak start?

    • @TooFondofBooksJH
      @TooFondofBooksJH  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmm, I think the St. Cyr series gets better and better. But, if you didn't like it at all then maybe it's not the series for you.
