I thank you very much. I have two hundred laying adults and had no idea how to seed my colonies. I have four 50 black plastic bins that are not being used so I will start using them for colonies. Very interesting, informative video.
Great video! Very informative! I've subscribed. Just a tip: if you're recording with a cell phone, turn the phone sideways, and the picture will fill the screen and not have the black bars on the sides. Take care.
Those exact same water crystals can be found in diapers too. :) If you don't have a bag of water crystals available for whatever reason, and you urgently need some, get your hands on a (of course unused!!) diaper, cheap brand or not doesn't matter, soak it in a bucket of water for awhile and cut the thing open. Extract the crystals and you're ready to go. :) Also, dry crumb for baby chicks is a perfect dry food for Dubia, as I found out. It's cheap and contains everything they need to grow into adults and thrive. As a source of water and variation in diet - and extra vitamins - I also supply them weekly with fresh fruit and veggies. Apples, oranges, pears, carrots, tomato, lettuce, ... anything that doesn't rot or stinks within a day goes into the Dubia bin. So banana and alike is a no go as well as any sorts of cabbage, those things rot and stink up the place extremely fast. Unless in very small amounts and placed into something so that it stays put at all time to be removed easily, I won't feed it to them. And I give them fruits and veggies only as much as they can eat in less than 24 hours, otherwise you'll end up with bits and pieces scattered around that WILL start to mold and destroy your colony. Cheers.
awesome video very educational and informative. best one I have seen so far on setting up for dubias. I'm sure a bunch of people have already said this, but the video will look better if you turn the phone sideways! other than that, really fantastic and I appreciate you putting this out there!
Awesome video, really informative and helpful! I'm a long time animal guy, but only recently I've gotten into raising Tarantulas and Scorpions, so I've started a Red Runner colony, and will now be starting a Dubia colony, this really helped me a lot! I also raise Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches, but they're pets, they are safe from the claws and fangs 😁 My other pets are my dog, Milo and three Parakeets, Sonny, Gina and Trudy, my Miami Vice family lol I've subscribed to your channel, looking forward to lots of good info.
I can trust a man sitting on a lowes bucket 😆🤘🏻 I'm just setting mine up right now in a small sterilite high container, I don't need a huge colony yet, I only have a gecko. For now. 🙂
Dubia roaches CAN'T climb up smooth surfaces, that's why those plastic tubs are ideal for keeping dubia roach colony's. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed watching that. Thanks. 😊
i was wondering about the orange thing! i have seen it on many videos that they did feed it to their roach's but was confused because i have also heard not to feed any thing to the roach's that you cant feed to ur reps. so thank you for the explanation!
Love your set up. I'm going to mimic it. Do you breed crickets? I'd long to see your video on that. Thanks. Also, where do you suggest I go to find a good roach chow recipe? Thanks again!
Thanks for all the info I just recently got a whole colony from some one and it is doing great how ever the person I got it from told me to leave all the frass in the bottem it's alot it covers the whole bottem of the tub do I keep it or get rid of it
I'm thinking of setting up a colony of these guys, but I was wondering how often would you clean their home/change out the egg carts? I have two beardies so I don't want a thousand of these guys, I would prefer to keep it around 250 to 500, how many do the females have every 30 days? Also thank you for showing how to set it up.
cheers mate, great vid, just flip the phone next time ;-) What do you think about a micro colony with like 2 males and 8 females? since I just have a couple of mourning geckos to feed and they get often fruits.
Yuliya Collins if it’s low watt it shouldn’t melt, maybe warp it a bit but it shouldn’t melt. also i recommend you put your egg crates in a zigzag pattern, they get more ventilation that way. i’ve heard they can die from not enough ventilation in the egg crates. i also recommend, depending on the humidity where you live, to use circle-hole drills covered with mesh on the lid for ventilation (if you choose to use one.) don’t put any on the sides; as that lets in more light in and could let them climb up. i recommend watching more videos on dubia roaches, and you can stop once you aren’t learning anything new. you should keep them for at least 4-5 months before you start feeding them off if you wanna keep up a good count-some people recommend longer. sorry for the long comment, i’m just trying to educate a bit, also for people scrolling by. i wish you luck in your colony!
im using a ceramic heat bulb for my colony but its a 40 watt bulb is that enough heat for my dubias or would i need more heat. if more heat is needed i also have a heat pad like the one shown in this vid can i use those together. thanks in advance
Ok sorry I'm commenting a third time, but this warrants its' own comment. I keep hearing you're supposed to seperate the adults and nymphs because they'll produce more that way, which makes sense but it is a pain in the butt if you are pressed for space already. My thought was putting the nymphs in the bigger container because there's many and then seperating the two breeder pairs into 2 6qt bins just for now or should I put them all into the big one? On one hand I keep hearing to seperate, on the other I heard the nymphs eat the frazz from the adults and it's good for them. I guess I'll just put them together and keep my fingers crossed
Oh hey the water crystals from flukers are super cheap on chewy! I paid less than 5 bucks for the big container, grabbed a few to stock up. Their selection for reptiles is small but what they do have is cheap.
Great 1 male to 4 female, I had 50 male to 50 female so I'm going to change that right now, what's your food blend if u don't mind me asking thanks dude this really helpful
might be too late to help, but there is a really great blend that a lot of people use for both breeders and feeders. It usually consists of high protein chicken feed (non medicated), fish flakes, turtle feed, and calcium powder. Hope this helps!
Hey Gary, i am going to have a go on my own roachbreading for my 2 beardies so its not going to be big. I got almost all the info from your video, there is just one little question. How do you make your own food for the roaches, i need some info on that. please help me.
Can you tell me where you placed the heater mat? Is it stuck to the outside side or underside of the bin? Do you use just one or do you use one on all three sides of the 'housing' area?
Hi thank you so much. My Husband and I always go to you. Lol we starting the colony. I seen ppl selling 10 females and 5 males. For 55$ does that sound right?
a lot of people feed their roaches a mixture of high protein chicken feed, turtle food, fish flakes, and calcium. here is a link that has different sizes for those exact heating pads: www.reptilebasics.com/ultratherm-heat-pads Good luck!
jason sexton yeah should be fine, just make sure you aren't giving them too much calcium. I just advise getting the regular water crystals he talked about in the video
Go ask your doc, i don't think anyone can answer your health related problems here, but i guess it can be, that one can react allergic to certain kinds of animals and stuff. Use Gloves and wash.
Yea, it’s actually not uncommon for people to find out they are allergic to the roaches, it’s the dust and the feces they give off. I am allergic and have Dubias in my room, so I take Claritin to help a little.
Thanks for the very informative video. We will follow your advice. I subscribed to your videos. I am from Russia Altai Territory. Could you write a food composition for the cockroaches that you use? Because of the difficulty of translating from English to Russian, it's not entirely clear by ear, it's better to write with the text.
KC mx but don’t get a lamp, they hate light cause they are nocturnal... if you get a heat lamp, they won’t breed and end up hiding all in spot, leading to cannibalism.
The best video I"ve seen so far on breeding Dubias...no extra fluff, just straight to the point- thank you!
Dave’s current video on them shows other techniques and straight to the point and educational

Getting ready to set up my first colony and this was super helpful! Thank you!
Very helpful, now I know what I need to start my own colony! Thank you for making this not as overwhelming as other tutorials.👌🏼🙏🏻
Jaden Burdick You're very welcome! Glad we could help 😄
gj reptiles how many females do you think I should start out with for breeding?

Or just use cucumbers...
Great job
Well explained 👍
Hi from Beirut, Lebanon
Great video! Could you please post the mixture that you make for the food? The dry food in addition to the produce that you talked about
awesome video very educational and informative. best one I have seen so far on setting up for dubias. I'm sure a bunch of people have already said this, but the video will look better if you turn the phone sideways! other than that, really fantastic and I appreciate you putting this out there!

This answered my questions on setting up a colony. I did have a request. Can you do a video on your cleaning process and also how you harvest?
Dubia roaches CAN'T climb up smooth surfaces, that's why those plastic tubs are ideal for keeping dubia roach colony's. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed watching that. Thanks. 😊
Wow i like your bin rack setup. I was telling my wife that i thinkt his is my idea setup.. Then i can just break them down if i ever need to
What do you use to feed your roaches? What size is your heat pad? Do you put the heat pad under the crate?
i was wondering about the orange thing! i have seen it on many videos that they did feed it to their roach's but was confused because i have also heard not to feed any thing to the roach's that you cant feed to ur reps. so thank you for the explanation!
How do you go about, or what is your routine, for adding in new bloodlines to your colony?
Good video! Really simple instructions
THANK YOU
Thanks Buddy really informative!!
Great tips and ideas I’ve just started a small setup for the first time let’s hope I succeed!!
God bless

Love your set up. I'm going to mimic it. Do you breed crickets? I'd long to see your video on that. Thanks. Also, where do you suggest I go to find a good roach chow recipe? Thanks again!
Could you tell me what your food mixture consist of? Thank you!
Me too please
I feed my roaches fish flakes. Occasionally carrot and apple peels and I also add half a teaspoon of Zoomed Repticalcium.
Where do you put your heat pad...didn't see that in the video- forgive me if I missed it?
great video. Where does the heat pad go and can you tell me where I can get one, thanks.
I would imagine it goes under the side with the egg crates.....and you can buy any under tank heater online
Good video. Straight to the point. I like it. I just subscribed. Looking forward to more content
Do u add the heat mate to the tank for the heat
Very informative, do you mind sharing your recipe for your roach food, I'm setting up my first Bug Bin
Do you put the heat pad outside or inside, I’m asking because I saw a video where he put them inside
Thanks for all the info I just recently got a whole colony from some one and it is doing great how ever the person I got it from told me to leave all the frass in the bottem it's alot it covers the whole bottem of the tub do I keep it or get rid of it

Tina in the video he said he cleans it every 3 months
cheers mate, great vid, just flip the phone next time ;-)

Great video!!! Thank you for sharing!!!
What is the food you give in the fodder bowl?
love the way you make the vid, keep up the good work
Where does the heat pad go? I was told it can't go underneath the plastic?
Where do you place the heat source?
So that heat pad you showed. Does it go under the tank or taped to the side where the egg crates are?
What is the reason for the cardboard between the egg crates?
how long do you leave the oranges or greens in for? until they finish? or a certain amount of time?
Great Video, do you know of any place where I can get extra egg cartons?
Great video learn new things everyday
Thank you ! Great video! I will set my bin just like you told! Quick question: Do you put a heating pad just under your bin? Would it melt plastic?
Yuliya Collins if it’s low watt it shouldn’t melt, maybe warp it a bit but it shouldn’t melt. also i recommend you put your egg crates in a zigzag pattern, they get more ventilation that way. i’ve heard they can die from not enough ventilation in the egg crates.

PinkBunny315 thank you so much! I will do that!
Great video. Thank you so much
Great video! Question for you, when you are setting up the colony, why do you put nymths too? Why not only adults?
Thanks
im using a ceramic heat bulb for my colony but its a 40 watt bulb is that enough heat for my dubias or would i need more heat. if more heat is needed i also have a heat pad like the one shown in this vid can i use those together. thanks in advance

How do you make the dubio roach food
Would love more videos from u! 😍👍
Can you tell me where you placed the heater mat? Is it stuck to the outside side or underside of the bin? Do you use just one or do you use one on all three sides of the 'housing' area?
Laura M Hart just one underneath the bin
If you leave them open do you have to worry about other insects flies gnats spiders....etc
MrPoohbae1000 no. But if you live in area where there’s lots of flies and other insects like the parasitic wasps then make a screen lid.
Only rent a small room... is it ok if I put them on a mineral water container about 5 gallons..
Is the heat pad going to melt the bottom of the tub or no???
Aku menyukai pidio ini , luar biasa
Do you place the heat matt inside or outside the bin
Good job . . .salam dari Indonesia
Does the heat pad go on the wall inside the enclosure?
Oh oh oh , THE CARDBOARD SPACERS ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Brilliant , each crate section stays ,,,, and also slide out easily
I can not hold one in each hand, sh*t I cant even hold one in one hand lol, maybe one day. Keep up the good work!
Would mind sharing your dry feed recipe
How long does it take for nymphs to become adults
very helpful video
What do you make your food from?
are those egg trays used or unused? -warren from Philippines
excellent information there. thanks
I never see mine crawling around. they are always in the egg crates. Are they nocturnal?
Robert Guy yes they are nocturnal
I have lots of questions. If there a way I could get ahold of this guy in the video??? Omg. He could help me so much
Question on the heating pad. Does it raise your electric bill?
Obviously it uses electricity, but it's probably negligible.
Don't know if anyone asked this, but what was the mix of food for the roaches made of?
Great video thanks for the tips
Thank you 🙏
Where do I put the heat pad?
Very informative. Thanks for sharing bro.
Hi thank you so much. My Husband and I always go to you. Lol we starting the colony. I seen ppl selling 10 females and 5 males. For 55$ does that sound right?
harristanaya31 honestly is depends. We typically sell starter colonies locally of 15 Females, 5 Males and about 20-30 assorted for $25.
This is super old but that’s very overpriced you can find 100 for 25 on dubiadepot.com
Can you please tell me the ingredints in your roach gel? I would love to make my own !! Thank You
this is going to be really useful thank u! XD
Help please.
What food you put there in a pot and can you give me the link where you found the heat pad ?
a lot of people feed their roaches a mixture of high protein chicken feed, turtle food, fish flakes, and calcium.
here is a link that has different sizes for those exact heating pads: www.reptilebasics.com/ultratherm-heat-pads
Good luck!
Where do you put your heat matt? Inside or outside :) thanks
Outside
Do u sell the chow by any chance? If so, how much?
Thanks for the video!!
gj reptiles, would you please add a list of materials you use. I want to support you by using the affiliate links or your website.
what is your food mix????
Thank you. Well done!
What is in the food mix
GOD loves y'all and have a blessed day
What is the dry feed make up info please?
Great video and subbed you
What about fruit? Oranges ? How do you prevent flies a'd flies from laying eggs i to the fruit?
Do you use cleaners(beetle) for your bins.
U can use superworms as cleaner crew i believe
Well there is kinda a difference the plants crystals are a lot smaller than the one u get for your feeders
is it ok to give fluker's ckicket quencher with calcium fortified
jason sexton yeah should be fine, just make sure you aren't giving them too much calcium. I just advise getting the regular water crystals he talked about in the video
Any specific questions on the Dubia Roach Care, bearded dragons, crested geckos, superworms, etc. Visited us at facebook.com/gjreps/
what about allergies, i noticed i am a little choked up after messing with them after only a week
Go ask your doc, i don't think anyone can answer your health related problems here, but i guess it can be, that one can react allergic to certain kinds of animals and stuff. Use Gloves and wash.

How big of a hole do I need to cut for a vent hole?
15 -25% of the enclosure. I think a bit of humidity is good for the eggs
