Deer feeders are a popular subject among today's deer hunters. The question of how to build homemade deer feeders tops the list of many hunters looking for a fun project to assist their deer hunting efforts. Building the best deer feeder can be relatively easy, inexpensive, and offer big returns. In this video, we will show you how to build a deer feeder on a sled that offers the mobility and ease of use that traditional tripod deer feeders can't provide. Just built 3 of these. Used 1 1/2" mild steel tubing instead of electrical, 2" on runners and just notch cut the bends and welded instead of prefab bends. Free barrels,$35 for steel,$20 for funnel,$20 for poly lid,$40 for a spinner w/timer, $10 battery,$5 spray paint. Extremely happy with the results. Very rugged. Thanks for sharing a great design

Great idea! I plan on building one of these. Been researching the best way to build. I need to make the varmit guard prob out of expanded metal and use a clamp on lid because it has to be bear proof up here in PA. Thanks for the video.

If worried about the skids wearing out from rocks and such, you can add skid shoes. Basically it's a layer of metal that runs the bottom edge of the skid. You can hold them on with large metal hose clamps. I know it sounds backwoods, but we used this system on helicopter skids everyday. Called helicopter skid shoes on Google search.

Handy, love your how to videos. Just finished my own feeder sled and it is awesome. I would like to do my own welding in the future. What type and brand welding machine do you use. Keep up the good work my friend.
Man that's awesome! You are going to love that sled! You are also going to find a million other things to build once you get a welder. I use a Hobart Handler 140 Mig welder. It welds with or without shielding gas (i weld with gas). You can start out with a much cheaper welder to do these types of projects and then upgrade later. I've heard decent things about the Harbor Freight welders for around $100 (prob good for beginners). They are cut between 17-20 degrees. I had to play with it a little so they arent perfect. I hate angles! Hope that helps!
Can I ask what kind of welder are you using. I have a stick but looking into a wire or mig welder something that will weld this kind of material. PS I love your drag feeders!!!
Hi Mack, I have a Hobart Handler 140 Mig welder. It runs on 110v and I run shielding gas as well. Great little setup up for my kind of welding. Never had an ouch of trouble out of it and I run it hard. I’ve run it off a 30amp generator out in the field and it performed great too. Good luck and let me know what you decide.

Excellent. I like how you spend time with your son. I would like to make a cattle feeder like this. I need to figure out how to disperse corn downwards not outwards. Into a bucket. Any ideas
Thank you! My son is a lot of fun and he loves the outdoors. Funny you should ask about the down spout type of feeder. I’m in the process of building one that drops corn straight down so I can lay down a strip of corn in the road for hog hunting. I’m basically taking a deer feeder with the funnel in the bottom and rigging a metal plate on a bolt where the spout comes out. It will be spring loaded and will open when you pull the rope. I’m using a metal junction box lid to make the slide that covers the spout and opens on a spring. It will have wheels and a trailer hitch too. I haven’t finished it yet but I think it will work perfect. Hope that helps.

chris devito will do! May be a little while before we finish that project but it shouldn’t be too long. Now that I think about it there may be a worm gear type of motor that you could put on a deer feeder that opens and closes on a timer. I think I’ve seen one but not sure where. How did you hook up the solar panel and where did you get it and how does the unit function?
dannythetoesmasher Hi Danny! It's a 7 watt panel that runs directly to the 12v battery. You need to install a diode between the panel and the battery on the + wire to prevent backflow at night. I then connect the battery to the feeder motor. I would recommend putting a 12 volt regulator between the battery and motor to protect against solar surge. The battery stays 100% charged and is maintenance free. I'll do a video real soon on how to set it all up. Let me know if I can help you. Thanks for watching!
What was the final measurements for the frame for the barrel
The barrel frame that it sits on is 24”x24” which leaves about a 1/2in of play on all 4 sides. Hope that helps.
Are your sled runners holding up to moving them around. I live in North Central Arkansas.. Lots of rock in the pastures..
Oh yeah! Holding up great! I just moved it across my farm the other day and it took me 5 minutes...i was flying. Now, it does help if it’s almost empty but you can pull it full as well. Build one...you’ll never regret it. Best thing I ever built. Good luck!

Question: What angle do you cut your brace legs at? I noticed they were cut on an angle, but I don't think you mentioned that angle.

Handy I dont have a barrel at the moment but wanted to get started. Do you remember what are the dimensions of the Squared Angle Iron where the barrel sits?
Hi Vincente, a metal barrel is 23 inches wide so I build my tray that it sits in at 24” exactly. That gives you 1/2 inch to spare on each side which is perfect. Build it 24” wide and you will be set to go! Good luck in your build!

How do you pwer it do you build or buy a motor?
You can buy the whole spinner box which protects the battery and motor and mounts to the bottom of the feeder. We have them in our amazon store if you need some good ones. Good luck.
Do you have any videos about how you go about painting the barrel?
I currently don’t but will be working on one in the next month. Paint your whole barrel one solid color...like green. Then use painters tape to mark off camo blotches wherever you like and then paint them with your second color. You can use brown paper or newspaper to protect the other areas of overspray. Then do the 3rd color just like the 2nd. Put a good coat of clearcoat at final to protect. Hope that helps! Good luck and have fun!

Nice, I think the only thing I would do different is put elbows on both sides of the sled so that I can hook my four wheeler to either side and pull it either direction without having to turn it too much.
Smart man! I will never again build a sled feeder or sled blind without elbows on both ends. Makes a big difference when you get into tight spots! Its just too easy to do up front and makes a big difference out in the field. Good luck and thanks for watching!

I built one of these. They are as great as he describes them. I cut my legs at 42" and 17 degree angle. That made my legs about 3'10" wide at the bottom. That way it still fits in the back of my truck and it's wide enough so that it doesn't turn over when taking a corner at high rate of speed. :-)
Did anyone catch the dimensions of angle iron square?
24” wide. A drum base is 22.5 to 23.5 wide so it fits perfectly. Good luck!

I do not have any plans but I give some dimensions as I walk through the video. You can use these as a guide but may want to adjust based on your needs, etc. Let me know how it goes!

They are cut at about 17 degree (17-20 apprx). Hard to get it perfect but you can bulk weld to fill in the gaps...LOL! Good luck and keep in touch!

Vicente Salinas great question! I slightly squeezed them and then notched them. You don’t want to fully crimp them because that could be a weak spot to bend while pulling under load. Slightly squeezing them just makes it fit better longways on the skids. Shoot me a pic when you are done! You are going to love this setup! I pull mine all over the farm...so convenient! Good luck!

The lids for the 55 Barrel Feeders are from Boss Buck. They are made of pressed steel. You will have to clean, prime and paint them. I have found using truck bed liner spray instead of paint works best. Apply 2-3 coats for lasting performance. * I've built a couple "Bear-Proof" not on a sled like Steve's in this video.
