When I was a kid I always got murmured by dad because we kids only wanted fried rice. I didn’t understand then since if it’s all you can eat, doesn’t it also mean you can eat whatever you want? Why do I have to eat things I don’t like to eat?
But now I develop a better taste and appetite and cook fried rice myself, I can finally comfort my dad by eating what’s worthy in buffet😅😂

If you want the best financial deal, buy simple ingredients and cook at home.
If you want to treat yourself with quality of life sometimes, go to a buffet and eat what looks interesting or delicious.
Mixing the two targets is just plain stupid. You gain nothing from overeating on food that your body did not demand (unless you are undernourished), you just try to damage the restaurants business.

My Dad would always complain about Mom and how many plates of crab legs she would eat. Dad was getting as many shrimp as he could. Then when no one could eat any more - Mom would wrap up eggrolls in napkins and stuff them in her purse for later.

I used to go to a buffet about once a month with co-workers on the weekend, and absolutely, it was a team strategy. Each person had a recurring "job" at the buffet. A couple people got heaping plates of Dungeness and snow crab, another got a plate of prawns, another got oysters, others got the lemon and seafood sauce, etc. Then all of this would be set out on the table, we'd decant onto our plates and as soon as the bulk plates had been emptied, they went back for another round of same, which stayed on the table until people had eaten through enough of their personal plates to grab more from the bulk plates... and on and on this went for several hours. The true professionals on our team even came with our own crab-cracking equipment, because it was more efficient (in both time and energy expended) than what the restaurant supplied. Like the intense tech professionals we were, we triaged out the less valuable options and stuck to the ones with the biggest bang for the buck, our goal being to get as much value of of a nice afternoon at the waterfront buffet as we could.
We tipped 25-30% (which was over $100 for a table of us), because we suspected we were likely a joke in terms of how methodically we approached attempting to eat the venue out of steamed crabs and wanted the wait staff to be on side. I can imagine that in our matching company jackets from (insert tech company whose name you'd know, here) we became recognisable over time as "those tech workers who eat all the shellfish are here again". In over a dozen visits there, I never saw another group attacking the buffet the way we did, with division of labor, and I always wondered why, because it was the most efficient way to do it.

Him laughing at people filling up on rice is great because my dad was a super cheap guy. He always got mostly seafood and meat becaus they were the most expensive things on the buffet.

Ironically, the only place my family went out to eat at when I was a kid... Chinese buffet. My dad literally told me to not fill up on the cheap things but to eat the things that cost more. He yelled at me for getting a donut. Lol #poorkidstatus
