      So you're skipping _Marco Polo._ Nothing major happens which you need to know. If you're skipping stories which have fewer than half of their episodes surviving, it'll be a while before you skip any more as seasons 1-2 are mostly complete. There aren't really any stories where you need to read up on the plot (simply due to the format of the show) but there will be times you need to be aware of companion departures/arrivals.

      The Best Way, To Watch Each Missing Serial:
      Marco Polo (All 7 Episodes, Missing)- There is a 30-minute condensed reconstruction, on: 'The Beginning,' Box-Set. It successfully condenses the entire 2 1/2 long story, into 30 minutes, without missing any major plot-points.
      Recommendation: Watch That.
      The Reign Of Terror (Episodes 4, 5 out of 6, Missing)- Parts 4 and 5, are animated, on: 'The Reign Of Terror, DVD.
      Recommendation: Watch That.
      The Crusade (Episodes 2, 4 out of 4 Missing)- Episodes 1 and 3, are on the: 'Lost In Time,' box-set, with a reconstruction of parts 2, and 4, by: 'Loose Cannon Productions,' on their: 'Daily-Motion,' website. Alternatively, there are brief intermissions, with: 'Ian Chesterton,' actor: 'William Russel,' in character, filling in the gaps, also on the: 'Lost In Time,' Box-Set.
      Recommendation: Watch Episodes 1, and 3, with: 'William Russel's,' catch-up.

And that ten-year-old me, were they alive in '63, would have dug it. Just have to put yourself in the right frame of mind and go with it.

    Welcome to Classic Who Jess! I wish you a long and exciting journey from 1964 to 1989! Also, I very highly recommend checking out synopsis's for missing stories if you don't feel like listening to the audio recordings. Let's just say that certain companion introductions and exits happen in missing stories, and it would be too jarring for you if you didn't know everything about that. Also, little fun fact: Marinus is one the Cybermen's adopted home planets that Twelve mentioned about in 'The Doctor Falls'.

    • @iansmith4023
      @iansmith4023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd wondered about that. I remember thinking at the time, "why did he say that?"
      I gather it's an extended Whoniverse thing. Presumably because it's mentioned in a TV story, it's 'canonical' now? (However you define canonical)

      It’s in a sixth doctor comic

    • @MyAbridged
      @MyAbridged 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Ian Smith, when it comes to 'Canon', the BBC's official position is that there is no official Canon for Doctor Who, so anyone's personal canon is as valid as anyone else's. This is mainly down to the sheer amount of expanded universe material and how much of it contradicts other stuff
      There was a comic called 'The Worldshapers' which featured the Voord eventually evolving into the Cybermen and Marinus becoming Mondas. Unfortunately this conflicted with other origin stories for Mondas, both the comic series' own story 'The Cybermen' and the legendarily popular Big Finish Audio 'Spare Parts'.
      'The Doctor Falls' attempted to clarify and allow these stories to co-exist by specifying Marinus, Mondas, Telos, Planeet 14 and others as all being separate planets that Cybermen rose up on. But in reality you're allowed to pick and choose which of these you consider canon, since there is no official canon.

    • @ericjohnson9623
      @ericjohnson9623 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@iansmith4023 Yes. The comic book writer Grant Morrison wrote a story in the 1980s for Doctor Who Magazine named The World Shapers, where the Sixth Doctor meets Jamie and they learn Marinus, many years after The Keys of Marinus, becomes Mondas / Planet 14 and the Voord the Cybermen. Later works like the audio Spare Parts for Big Finish ignore this and treated Mondas as its own planet, no Marinus ties. Steven Moffat's rather clever solution was to have the Cybermen be the result of parallel evolution on many similar worlds: Mondas, the Mondasian refugee ship in the episode, Telos, Marinus, Planet 14, Pete's World, etc. The Cybermen are not a specific race, but something that can happen to humanoids across the multiverse if their tech becomes stronger than their bodies and they want an upgrade.

    Yes, modern viewers of classic Who have to get used to some of the daft effects and scenes where people hide in plain sight and don't get spotted, but it's worth it in the long run. I'm glad you'll be watching The Crusade, because it's so beautifully written. Such a shame about the missing Troughton stories: the BBC just didn't know what they had.

    • @MrPaulMorris
      @MrPaulMorris 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be fair to the BBC, the scrapping of old material was standard practice across all networks once any potential income had been realised. Once the video tapes were transferred to 16mm prints for overseas sales (which was done in order to avoid problems with the differing TV standards) there wasn't really any reason to hold on to the masters; domestic repeats were very uncommon and there were, of course, no home video players! Moreover, once colour broadcasts became the norm the older black and white episodes became virtually unsaleable. The tapes were not only large (2"/50mm width) and difficult to store but also expensive so it made perfect sense to simply reuse them--in exactly the same way as we all did at home in the days of VCRs.
      It is only by sheer luck that any of the early episodes exist; many other shows from the same period have no surviving material. The policy was to scrap the masters and the 16mm prints made for overseas sales were supposed to have been destroyed by the customer, passed on to another broadcaster or returned to London (for destruction or distribution to another network) after the contracted transmissions. There was no archiving of video recordings as they were thought to be largely ephemeral and the 16mm prints were not considered to be film material (which was archived) as they originated from a video master.
      We have these episodes only because foreign broadcasters held on to prints after broadcast, BBC staff mis-filed 16mm prints in the film archive or tapes just 'fell through the cracks' and were found years later when, for example, buildings were vacated. A few also turned up in private hands either passed on as souvenirs by staff or literally picked out of skips (dumpsters).

    Fully intend to be here in 4 years!
    Also, I for one am glad you're not going to try to cram hours of story into one video. It always makes me sad how compressed the reaction videos which do that are.
    Also also, @4:44, "I don't think I'm going to be running into big huge problems until the 2nd Doctor": that's sort of true, but it's more true to say that it's seasons 3-5 that are the worst hit for missing eps, which translates to the end of the First Doctor and the beginning of the Second. I suspect that around Season 3 you're going to start feeling like you're missing significant chunks of the "whole experience" if that's what you're going for. But that's a bridge to cross later in the year!

    So glad to see you start this! No idea how long it'll take, but I'll certainly be here for the duration :-) (Funny - New Who took you 2015-2018 and in retrospect that really seemed to fly by!) I'm still about 10 stories shy of having seen all of Classic Who myself, but just knowing how much good stuff you've got to come (not least all the different Doctors) makes me super excited to see you experience it all. With so much to get through, naturally not everything is going to hit the mark - and there are some real lows you might need to power on through! - but, brave heart, Jess, you're a veteran now! I can't see the odd clanger putting you off. So, I'm gladly buckling in alongside you with several thousand others. Fantastic reaction. Your love of the show and its' characters shines through. One can both cringe/laugh at a less than convincing costume, VFX or setting while being engaged by some imaginative writing and absolute professionalism of brilliant actors who completely commit to the story they are trying to tell. Trying to tell on a budget, if memory serves, of approximately £1500 per 50 mins. Shooting as per a Soap or Sitcom to videotape via multi-camera studio set up, with only two edits allowed, or was it one? Hence the presence of the occasional flubbed line. Just a few years later "Star Trek" was being produced in colour, using 35mm film for about U.S.$200,000 per 50 mins. Kudos to the extraordinary Who team in front of and behind the camera who gave it their all, no matter the obstacles they faced. If you have imagination and a sense of wonder this team and all those that followed them will transport you anywhere in time and space..
    P.S. Yes Barbara/Jacqueline Hill was an absolute "Queen"!

    • @MrPaulMorris
      @MrPaulMorris 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Matthew McIntyre The editing, although difficult, didn't use an *electron* microscope (which would have required sending the tapes to one of the few research universities that had one) but rather a standard optical microscope. The process involved using iron powder in a suspension which stuck to the magnetic tape thus making visible the helical scan line and allowing the cuts to be made on the frame boundaries. Still an amazingly cumbersome process that really came down to the skill of an editor to wield a razor blade accurately under a microscope with little room for error--a bad cut could lead to a loss of sync and fixing that would lose at least one more frame.
      There were also issues with the soundtrack which wasn't physically aligned with the video meaning additional work had to be done to redub across the 'gap' caused by the cut. All in all, not a task to be undertaken lightly...

    This story was remarkable in what was achieved with a very limited budget. One of the reasons why many early stories seem over-stretched was simply the need to cover the cost of sets over a number of episodes. Here, the sets change every week and it must have been a real challenge to scrape together sets, props and costumes within budget.

    The Keys of Marinus is one of the few non-Dalek stories that Terry Nation wrote for the series, and its a rollicking adventure. This is quite an epic for a series on a small budget, different locations and sets for almost every episode, loads of characters, it must have been a real challenge for the production team back in 1964. The reason the production team liked doing long stories back then was that they could amortize the costs over a longer period and maximize their budget.

  • @collectingmemoriesyt
    @collectingmemoriesyt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Absolutely you should read synopsis for the episodes you're skipping. You'll miss companions arrive and exit if you don't.
    As for animations they're pretty good, though several companies have done them and some are better than others. At the very least you need to watch The Tenth Planet (one animated episode) and Power of the Daleks (6 out of 6 episodes animated) because very important things happen in them.
    Enjoy the series. I watched it through in order my first time watching missing episodes with recons when animations weren't available and found it extremely rewarding going in order. You seem to have the right mindset for the older episodes and their poor effects and overacting but there's some great stories here and if you like it so far I can only promise it gets even better later on. Hartnell is fantastic but you're going to love the Second Doctor, I guarantee it.

    Back in the day, the cast of Doctor Who would sometimes do radio show versions of certain stories as well as releasing on vinyl , which is really great if you are interested in any of the many missing Patrick Troughton episodes. Audible has quite a few of those (William Hartnell's last can also be found there), such as Macra Terror, Ice Warriors, Faceless Ones, The Highlanders etc, and they are full cast with narration added. So if the interest is there, you have that option.

    The way you're doing it is almost exactly how I did when I went through, only watching stories that were at least mostly there. I eventually went back and rewatched reconstructions of all the ones I missed so as to get the full experience but that was certainly a little bit of a chore in places. I'd suggest that maybe you read episode summaries of those you're skipping just so you're not confused in later episodes, but that's obviously up to you.

    A very good reaction to classic Doctor Who. Watching episodes from the 60's and 70's just shows how much the technology in the making of TV sci-fi has improved. Though classic Who still comes over as an enjoyable drama. You're in for some really interesting things that'll make you laugh, cry and maybe even scream...with more laughter. For some of the monsters aren't that horrifying.

    Gooooooosh I wish they'd done an Ian/Barbara reference when Clara was working at the same school they went to... Imagine 12 bumping into old Mr. Chesterton (who I think ended up as the headmaster of the school) and he finds the TARDIS. That was SUCH a missed opportunity. :(

    I don't blame you for not reacting to the missing stories, a handful of missing / mostly missing stories such as The Dalek's Master Plan still hold up really well, even in audio form only, but most are very difficult to sit through, even for die hard fans.

    *BEST NOTIFICATION EVER*

  • @GhostPurple69
    @GhostPurple69 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, that's fair enough. Recons can be rough, unless you're really super motivated. There are probably some missing serials where I've never bothered with a recon, in favor of the narrated audio track. It's way easier for me to concentrate on what effectively becomes a radio play than a slideshow with captions. It's a shame that several of the missing serials are such extraordinary ones.
    I know what you're saying about the half-or-more surviving serials. That seems sensible enough for a first pass. I'm sure people will let you know if something important happens between, like companions coming and going.
    There are a couple of instances now, however, where entire serials have been animated. Patrick Troughton's first serial, I even saw in the theater like that! And next month, one of my all-time favorite serials, The Macra Terror, is getting fully animated, so I'm pretty excited about that. But you won't have to worry about any of that for a while, I guess.

  • @Chiggins_
    @Chiggins_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, you should definitely read through the stories you're missing. The missing episodes contain the arrival of six companions, the departure of seven companions (so yeah, a lot of significant moments). As for 2, yeah I know it's a long way off, but here's the thing. His whole first story is missing. However, even though you say you'll only watch stories where at least half of it exists, the whole thing, all 6 parts, have been animated. And, as I said, it's a Doctor's first story, which is very significant. So yeah, come November, bear that in mind.

  • @lucasdolding6924
    @lucasdolding6924 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Obviously we all have preferred ways of how you view the classic era, but we are all grateful that you're doing it regardless. There are quite a few significant missing stories that you'll not end up seeing (ones where companions join or leave for example) so once you get to Season 3 there will be some stories that you should at least read a synopsis of for those significant moments.

    YES, Classic Who!
    :)
    Like most people here, I make two recommendations:
    1) If possible, try to read the synopses for each serial you skip. Unfortunately, the introductions and farewells of several companions take place in these missing serials, as well as the first appearances of important elements of the Doctor Who mythology.
    2) The only exception you should make involving serials with more than half of the lost / animated episodes should be The Power of the Daleks, because is the Second Doctor's first adventure.

  • @hellsingmongrel

    The animated versions of the missing episodes are actually really well done. They have the same feel as the live-action episodes, so I don't think you'll have much trouble accepting those, if you like the live-action ones.
    Also, don't rush yourself with Classic Who! It's a BEAST to tackle! I've been doing the same thing you are for the past few months, and sometimes it takes me a loooong time to get through a story! Not that they're particularly BAD, it's just definitely created for a different time, and our attention spans have definitely been trained to like something different then those. But they're fun to watch, and once you adjust to the difference in styles, you can enjoy yourself! I cracked myself up watching The Romans last night, just because of some reactions One had to everything that was happening. 😆
