I think Keys of Marinus as the first episode, is a 11/10 story it’s beautiful and I love Hartnell in it. Every episode after it however well not necessarily bad was pretty hit and miss and makes me not really want to return to this story
As said in a lot of the other comments, this story is so underrated by fans. Along with the Daleks, this is probably the season 1 story that really gripped people at the time. A great adventure serial, and really imaginative with some interesting settings and character interactions between the Tardis crew. I bet the kids in particular loved it back when it was aired. Honestly one of the most entertaining 6 parters IMO.
Fun Fact! At 3:11 there is an abrupt cut, as there were edits made to the original master tape, and it's unknown why these cuts were made. But in the DVD they took other clips from the story, digitally animated some parts, and put it with an off-air audio to basically fill in the cuts.
I should start getting more Classic Doctor Who DVDs. I think I will try collecting them in chronological order. I will therefore start with "The Keys of Marinus" as I already have The Beginning box set.
The Mechanoid Yes, I am going easy on buying them now since I left my comment because I am trying to save up on my money. So I will probably leave the box sets for some other time.
+Andrew Chapman Happy to help. Ones that are fairly cheap are: -Mannequin Mania -Earth Story -Kinda Tales -Time Flight/Arc of Infinity -The Rescue/The Romans There might be some others, but I'm not certain.
@@Coasterenthusiast94 Thanks for letting me know. At least we have the whole episodes for some that are damaged. Very clever how they try to cover it up. Thanks again.
@@Coasterenthusiast94 Not quite. They use nothing to cover it as that is how it was originally broadcast. We have no information (currently) on why the jump was necessary (accidental cut to the wrong set seems the most likely explanation), but you can tell it’s as broadcast because the music doesn’t jump, but instead has to start the next scene twice due to being relaid over the corrected visuals.
If you compare the shots from Barbara's angle with the rest, she sees everything as worn out and tattered. The main shots, for example, show Susan's dress as a pretty gown, and the cups of fruit juice crystal, yet the shots from her point of view have a simple mug, and rags instead of a gown.
The Doctor, Ian and Barbara, I believe, were hypnotised or somehow conditioned into believing that they were in a room of palatial splendour, when, in fact, it was the precise opposite - somehow, whatever happened to them didn’t affect Barbara - and she sees it how it actually is!
@@arthurvasey I saw this episode recently. There was a small device that was placed on everyone's forehead while they slept, designed to make them see paradise. Barbara turned her head while she was asleep which caused her to fall off, so she could see the truth.
I loved this story when it was first broadcast. It followed on from a story about Marco Polo which I found really boring and seemed to go forever. Ian is still wearing his costume from the Marco Polo story. When looking at these early stories now, they do seem lacking in production values, but that was not the case at the time. Watched on a small low definition black and white TV, they looked great!
I watched Dr ~Who religiously from the very 1st episode at the tender age of 11 and loved it and was frightened at times by it, but I have no memory of this story at all. Weird. Maybe the mind control exercised on everyone except Barbara worked on me instead !
Doesn't explain him not suspecting something wrong with his companion having supposed delusions for the first time, and it's in a place where everything nice is happening to them. Not to mention the shared aches in their foreheads should hint at implantation or a device hooked up to their unconscious bodies.
Fair point, but we have to give him some credit, she is the one acted strange and he is drugged, but i do agree, he is a little slower than today's doctor
Alright, seriously, how are people so blinded to the brilliance of this episode?
I couldn't agree with you more. And I really *love* Barbara!

Yes, why can’t they see that?
I’m not aware about much of it- could I have some help on what it’s about and so?
Easy, its old and doesn't have moffats speechifying.

Keys of Marinus an excellent Who story
“They’ve given us everything”. They’ve given you nothing!”
Brilliant lines!
"Look at these exquisite glasses Chesterton."
"Mm"

the keys of marinus is one of the bets william hartnell episodes
This serial is my favourite Hartnell story.

I dunno why but as a 13 year old this was my favourite story of the old show
This episode alone from the Keys of Marinus saga is such a good one
we can thank Terry Nation for this and of course the Daleks!
I should start getting more Classic Doctor Who DVDs. I think I will try collecting them in chronological order. I will therefore start with "The Keys of Marinus" as I already have The Beginning box set.
A good idea, but might I suggest getting a few of the cheap box sets as well?

+Andrew Chapman Fair enough. But you'd be surprised how many 2-disc box sets there are for the price of one dvd.
The Mechanoid I'll keep that in mind. :)

Nice! Thanks for sharing. I hope this is just the first of a long line of clips celebrating the entire 50 years of the Doctor and his companions. ;)
The Keys of Marinus! Love this one.
R.I.P. William Hartnell! Wish you were with us to celebrate the 50th Anniversary!
timrob12 he’d be 110+ years old lol
There is a 4 second missing gap at around 3:08. Altos had a longer approach to Barbara before asking "What's the matter?".
+waterfieldV there's a large portion missing during the gunfight in Reign of Terror 3.
@@Coasterenthusiast94 Hi, where is this missing portion in the episode? I've never seen it or maybe I have. Could you let me know?
@@kathrynconway4912 it’s at 308. The dvd uses CGI to cover it.

Yes, I knew she had died as well, just forgot her name! And yes, Carole Ann Ford and William Russel are still alive!
The Doctor was so naive back then. Ah, to be 350 again.
Wow, the show used to be a lot creepier..this would probably scare the crap out of kids these days.
Well that was....just wonderful. Think I will have to make sure to watch the old Doctor after all - here I'd been intending to just start from 4.
When I first got into _Doctor Who_ I started with _An Unearthly Child_ (though the DVD had issues that barred the loading of part 3).
Ahhh Doctor, so naive, and so innocent. :)
If something is to good to be true, it probably is.
But we love you all the same.
This is my favorite scene from The Keys of Marinus
Brings back memories .
All those statues posed around the place made me keep thinking 'don't blink'
I remember it from over 50 years ago
Favorite first doctor story

He reminds me of Rik Mayall
Time war will do that to you...
Name of this episode is the velvet web from season 1
This story needs a special edition release
Keys of Marinus I think.
2nd favorite first doctor story
I watched Dr ~Who religiously from the very 1st episode at the tender age of 11 and loved it and was frightened at times by it, but I have no memory of this story at all. Weird. Maybe the mind control exercised on everyone except Barbara worked on me instead !
Barbara forgot to put on her mask and socially distance, so she must receive a vaccine from the kindly physician.
Part 2: The Velvet Web
also correct
is it just me but does Altos remind you of Jonny Lee Miller
Local media broadcast pbs
What episode is this from?
Jack Talbot the keys of marinus -episode 2 I believe
The Keys of Marinus. I think this episode makes you think.
correct
Man I really wish classic who was available for free somewhere.
It used to be on PBS for free when I was a kid, but BBC now charges Americans and public broadcasting isn’t paying.
🏴☠️
Not Naive, just under the spell of illusion . . .
And now on BBC one; Doctor Who looks for keys... ok...
日本のハッピ lol
What episode is this? Is it available, I really want to know what she saw
The Velvet Web. And they couldn’t be releasing clips from it if it weren’t available! 🙄
Oh
Creepy
i have never seen this ep of doctor who or even other ep with the 1st the doctor in it but all i can say if that that guy at 3:18 creeps me out
Which episode is this?
The keys of Marinus 😊
The Velvet Web.
what episode is that from?
Keys of Marinus
The Velvet Web.

Checking wiki, Jacqueline Hill (Barbara) has sadly also died, but Carole Ann Ford (Susan) is still around...
The first 3 stories. I was bored when I first watched them but then got the hang of it.
Dose anyone know how to change your profile pic
Wrong, Ace.
Why does Ian wear Happi coat? It seems to read "中お京". But this word doesn't make sense.
It just seems to be random words that translates into "Chinese, Pine, Elephant"
+江村雄樹 It's from the previous story, Marco Polo, set in China.
Thanks! I learnt something new today!
Fair point, but we have to give him some credit, she is the one acted strange and he is drugged, but i do agree, he is a little slower than today's doctor
Old Doctor Who? Nah. I don't need to see the demo tapes.
