    I do the same things as this couple. What you do is basically spend all of your daily expenses on different credit cards with different rewards programs. Making sure to pay off the balance within 30 days to avoid paying interest. What you get is free vacations every year. Not sure why people don't do this more often. I only make $65k a year and have fly first class overseas for free twice a year.

      Because most ppl aren't responsible and if you do this and miss one payment it spirals fast. I used to charge everything for yrs. It helped me keep track of spending. Now I do not use credit at all. When my son graduates and I can travel more I might try it though!

    1. How is this affecting your credit score?
    2. How do you keep qualifying for such premium cards while not having an income or having limited income on the go?
    3. How much is the annual fees?
    4. Did you apply for all these cards before starting the trip or as you went along? Because applying for the card and getting it shipped in time to you in a foreign country seems complicated.

    Here in Australia, the Am Ex platinum card has an introductory offer of transferrable 100,000 points , travel insurance, access to airport lounges etc. However, to be eligible, you need a personal (or household) annual salary of over $100,000 pa and the card itself costs $1,200 pa. So, not ideal for all young folk I guess.

    Wonderful videos and thanks to Kara and Nate for sharing their travels. When most people ask how young couples can afford to travel they are hoping for some magic answer. It usually comes down to credit card/airline miles or some sort of $$ they got from somewhere. There is obviously a way to budget and travel while young and I think that would allow more people to do it. I wish there was truly a magic answer that could be applied to the millions of people that want to travel and make enough money to live and save for the future when they can not work and need to retire. For sure everyone should always balance life - I have made the mistake of sometimes slanting too much towards work and money and am always glad when I pull myself back towards a healthy balance!

    • @Huube123
      @Huube123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      generally yes mainly because Americans outspend many other more budget conservative countries so there is almost a guarantee that for the large majority of people issued the card, they will recoup the initial cost of the card's bonuses. For every other country, people don't spend as much on credit so there's a higher risk that people will take advantage of the card's bonuses without using the card afterwards ie: the companies will lose money so companies generally do not do so especially in poorer countries whose GDP/Capita does not exceed the US'

    When I was delivering airplanes I always bought fuel at airports where they gave S&H Green Stamps on all fuel purchases. At about $5.00 a gallon and some of the planes taking on up to 300 gallons, it wasn't long before we had a whole suitcase full of books of stamps. We cashed them in for open airline miles which could be used on any airline through S&H. By using air miles and using public transportation, my wife and I made a 60 day trip around the world for little more outlay in cash. We did get a good start on the trip when I got a delivery from Colorado to Austria.

    • @TOMMII0108

    It's not that hard to meet the minimum spend on these cards. For example, you can pay rent with your cards (there's a fee, but 3% of $1,500 is still worth the $500 in bonus). These guys probably used some manufactured spending as well (google it if you don't know). There's a lot to research and stuff to read up on, which they can't cover in a single video.

We were just in Cebu and did the same thing - basically erased the cost of the flight with our Barclaycard points. I also have the Chase Sapphire Reserve card which offers a TON in terms of free miles and perks. I hadn't met too many people with the AA card but I did some research after watching this video and found an awesome article on Upgraded Points that detailed everything. One of the coolest things I learned was that when you transfer Starwood points to your AA card they will give you 5,000 free points JUST FOR TRANSFERRING! That's insane - I feel like not a lot of cards do this. Have you guys utilized this? Do you have a Starwood Preferred Guest account? In any case - this video is great thanks for uploading.

Eventually you use avios on a Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore and stick to your original plan from Singapore to Cambodia. This route can save you so much travel time and miles spent on SIN-HKG and TPE-KUL because of the geographical fact.

    • @melissajohnson2935
      @melissajohnson2935 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Logical
      Not necessarily. Having a large amount of unsecured debt will absolutely hurt your credit unless you make 5x the total if all your credit combined. And that's if you have zero other credit obligations such as cars, mortgages, student loans, ect.... so basically for every $100k in unsecured credit card debt you have access to, you'd have to consistently bring in $500k in income for it to not affect your credit negatively. Plus you must actually use the credit. Just open unused accounts also negatively affect your credit.
      The problem is credit card companies like to base your approval based on credit score alone. They ask for your salary info, but they never verify that info. On the flip side most secured credit sources do verify that info which is why you can buy a house with a relatively low credit score but you can't get approved for a credit card with more than a $500 credit limit using the same score.
      Credit, how to get it, how to use it and how to keep it should be a 4 year class in all high schools. Because young people see videos like this and are like keys get all the cards so we can get miles and travel and have no idea how the process works and eventually end up in bankruptcy court.

      It's pretty simple since you can pay almost all bills with a credit card now. Just sign up for a credit card that grants miles for the money you spend, use those to pay your bills, use your income to pay off the credit cards. Essentially you earn free travel without having to spend a penny you wouldn't have otherwise.

    • @calteran
      @calteran 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They explained it in the video. American rewards cards often offer large bonuses when you sign up for their card. None of the miles used in this video were "earned" miles from purchases or travel; they were *all* simply signup bonuses.
      When you sign up for a card, there *is* a minimum spend before the bonus kicks in, usually $1000-$5000. Travel hackers route their normal expenses through these cards until they hit the minimum, then cancel the cards as soon as they've redeemed the bonus (sometimes they'll keep a single rewards card whose dollar-reward is higher than the others). There's usually a 6-24 month "cooling off" period before you can qualify for the bonuses again on the same card, but that's ok because there are a ton of cards that can be used for travel hacking.

    Heads up to people that the minimum spends on the credit cards to get all the bonus miles is usually thousands and thousands of dollars for each as mentioned with the $3000 minimum spend on just one card. They are not "free miles" and you probably would save more by booking a round-the-world type ticket.

  • @BrighamCrafts
    @BrighamCrafts 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    so tl;dr: you have to have a perfect credit score, sign up for a million credit cards, spend several thousand dollars on those cards in a short period of time in order to get the miles to fund a trip like this.
    not to mention, you need to be able to afford to take all this time off work.
    in other words, you need to already be pretty wealthy to get free travel. either that, or ur gonna eventually build up a bunch of credit card debt and then it's all over.

    • @troodon1096
      @troodon1096 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You're not getting it. Use the cards to pay for things you were going to buy anyway to get the miles, then use your income to pay off the cards before any interest comes due. Then you're earning free travel without spending a single dollar you weren't already going to spend. You don't need to be wealthy to do this, at all; pretty much anyone with a stable working class income and good enough credit can do exactly this, without racking up debt, and in fact without spending any money you weren't already going to spend.
