I thought the whole point of grinding was to turn the beans to a fine powder. You know, increase surface area -> increase diffusion when hot water goes over them? Don't you want to get the full coffee flavor from those beans?
pierrecurie You don't grind to a powder, I mean if you're making espresso you grind then finer but even then you don't want a complete powder. For regular drip brew you need a semi coarse ground beans, when I used to use my French Press I would only grind the beans for 30 seconds or so because you don't want grounds in your coffee. It really depends on what kind of coffee you're looking for, but I've never heard of grinding the beans into straight powder.
