  • As background for furthering bb-8 and other hobby robot projects, let's start with a basic discussion of the types of DC gear motors you're likely to choose from.

    I think videos like this are awesome. Not just for the BB-8 Builder community but just to fill a huge gap in youtube's "maker" video resources. Keep them coming!

    Thank you. I actually have a much better understanding of Spur vs Planetary now. I always thought of them as "Spur Motors vs Motor + Planetary Gearbox" not "Motor + Spur Gearbox vs Motor + Planetary Gearbox". It seems so silly now and I have no idea why I got caught up on that way of thinking.. Thank you very much.

    thanks, that di+should gave any beginners some idea on the type of motor,
    now the extra i would like have seen, is info on torque(rated, stall) in these motors
    btw you did mention at the end some... again thanks and a very well prepared presentation !!!

    The gear reduction does not affect power. It affects torque and angular velocity.

    • @1971bretto

      Gear reduction does affect power, as torque and velocity of moving components , inform the power of the overall system design. Energy is required. Please acknowledge an informative and well constructed video. And if you feel you can do better, by all means do so.

    Please, if you may help, the 56RPM you recommended, could be a 6v? I saw ones 6v~12v, that may work 20RPM to 56. My BB8 speed is slow, I guess I’ll have to change. Thanks in advance.

    Hello there, I just found your channel. The IBT-2, eh? I just go with the IBT-4's instead. The IBT-2's you have to modify to get them to not overheat; flawed design, but if you take that giant heat sink off the back, and put heat sinks on the actual transistors, then they work better.

    Don't take this wrong, it's only constructive criticism. I loved the video and please make more. You started off really good, moving along at a good clip, but then you slowed down. (about the time with all the handwaving) I loved the style and fast pace of the beginning. Loose any part of the video where you talk with your hands. I've thought about making a youtube learning channel myself so I've done some reading about it. After watching a ton of videos and doing some studying, I think it is best to keep your videos to between 10-15 minutes. Try to stick with real meaty substance. (think short attention span) As a side note, put links to where you got info and parts in the video description. You could probably loose the wikipedia link and add servocity and others. Great overview. I'd like to see some how-to for hooking up drivers and controllers. I'd go with a more generic name than something related to BB-8.

    • @EraserMiceLabs
      @EraserMiceLabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have been thinking a lot about those very same issues. I'm always unscripted, which tends to cause my meandering and hand waving. I acutlaly have a really short attention span myself, whcih is why I go to too many subjects and circle around a bit too much, but I'm acknowledging and working on it! goal is that all videos would be under 15 minutes. This one did wind up way too long. Editing is really a trick and I tend to lose steam too quickly (during editing, not on camera) Anyway, thanks for the good advice and expect to see me incorporating it !!

      That depends on the motor you are using, it will have certain capacities and characteristics, the right motor might not even need a gearbox.

    which motor should i use for making segway....that can sustain upto 80-90 kg weight

    • @EraserMiceLabs
      @EraserMiceLabs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For that kind of weight you'd need to use a heavy duty planetary gearbox or a belt drive of some kind. A lot of e-bike and e-board builders are using high power brushless motors and ESCs too. I'd look at those options, but its hard to say specifically what motors to use without knowing more about the rest of the design and control methods.

    • @EraserMiceLabs
      @EraserMiceLabs  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends what you have in mind. If you want to move a decent amount of weight reliably, you have to get a decent motor. You can get things on sale, or start with cheaper ones, the concepts are all the same. The motor drivers I use (the BTS-7960) are actually very inexpensive compared to things like the roboclaw for example.
