Exploring a Abandoned School in Ohio | 1915 Architecture | Urbex

  • Today we explored this abandoned school in Ohio. It was built in 1915. The gym was added later. When the school was no longer needed by the school district it was purchased by a church who turned it into a youth center. The youth center consisted of hundreds of mattresses in every single room which leads us to believe that maybe it was used for something else. This school is in a town with less than 2000 residents. The school had many interesting things around every corner. Just wait to you see the untouched cafeteria.

I went here in the late 80’s. I had Mrs. Pauley in 1st grade, Godfrey for 2nd, Shroy for 3rd, Shoemaker for 4th, and Farley for 5th. Godfrey was only there a year, because she got caught stealing. Shoemaker lived in town and was a hard-ass teacher. Chitty was the gym teacher and a lot of people couldn’t stand him. I could tell stories about just about everything in that building!

My grandmother, Louise Pauley taught 1st grade here. My mom and my 2 aunts attended here as well. I was born in 02, and u fortunately didn’t get to meet my grandmother because she died of brain cancer in 1991. Her classroom according to my mom is at 4:55

This is where I went to elementary school from kindergarten to 5th grade. Mr. Chitty (the sign you saw) was the best gym teacher we could have asked for. The cafeteria was WAY bigger back then lol and the paint wasn’t like that at all. I also walked through just a few weeks ago with permission from the farmer and it almost brought me to tears. So many memories there. It seems so large but there were actually trailers out back for 5th grade classrooms and the music room. There was a huge playground as well.

My 2 sons and 3 step children all attended this school. I loved that my children were able too attend a small country school. They knew everyone they went to school with. And the fact that it had such a long history made it even cooler. Many of the previous students before them still live in our community and supported our school district. Sharing the same fond memories of attending school in this old building. Many Christmas programs and music concerts were preformed by all the children who attended the school.
So sad to see it decaying from the inside out.

And I remember the whole school sitting in the hall on the first floor at Christmas to sing carols before going on break.

My 3 kids, along with my father and grandmother went to this school. Also many aunts, uncles, and cousins. It was an interesting building even in it's heyday. Not sure what they were thinking when they built it as "labrynth" doesn't begin to describe it. I remember going down into the basement cafeteria many times to eat lunch with my kids. Sad that it looks that bad on the inside. It was always well kept. I have a photo of my dad sitting in from the school with his class, from about 1945. Nice video.

Thank you for sharing this. A suggestion if you're ever in the area next time: there's another abandoned elementary a few towns over where I went to school called 'North'. Both schools were once independent high schools until consolidating into one district in the 1950's, then became elementary buildings within the same school system. Both closed in the same year. Not sure who owns it now or how friendly they'd be, but it might be worth a shot.

I went to this school, all the kids in that town plus a bunch from the town over went there. There were 2 elementary schools, this was called South. I could see I from my backyard, the church used it for about 2 or so Years. The only time someone would go to the school was right before and during the 1 to 2 weeks in the summer they used it. I just figured that because of how old the building is, when they left it until the next year there was too much to fix. It need regular upkeep that they weren't there for.

There's an old school in Edenton, on 133 South (Google Maps lists it as Goshen). that looks like it's of a similar vintage, but it's even smaller than this. I have pictures of it from back in the '90s, but the building is still there. Somebody is using it as a warehouse of some kind.
I grew up in Clermont County, in a town that had about 1,000 residents when I lived there. My original elementary school (torn down over a decade ago and replaced) was built up over time. Original buildings were started in the late 1800s, it was expanded multiple times until the late '60s. Parts of the old building have those high windows they eventually dropped ceilings over(IIRC, they were twelvepanes), and the same rounded/molded window edges. The gym/auditorium looks a lot like the one in my elementary school, when I was a kid, except we didn't have bleachers - we sat directly on the formed concrete. The floor surface was some kind of glazed tile, and hurt like hell if you fell down on them. The town bomb shelter (complete with yellow and black nuclear sign) was behind the stage in our elementary auditorium.
For anybody's information who cares, the "vomit-sorb" smelled like Pepto Bismol. They used it when I was in elementary school in the '70s.
Sorry for the long comment, but this one hit some near-memories, since parts of my elementary school were from around the same time.

The name of the school is on the floor in the basement, when he talks about school levies. I went to this school from Kindergarten to 6th grade many years ago. I hate to see the condition it is in.
