Stoney, I am at my wits end. My girl Blossom did not get a lot of socialization during Covid. Now she has become aggressive with new dogs she meets. She is 3 years 7 months old. Chocolate lab. She was to become my service dog but it’s hard to go out when I don’t know how she will react. She is excellent with people. She has been to two classes. One 3 week and one 5 weeks. The 5 weeks was supposed to solve the aggressiveness but it hasn’t. She doesn’t bite but she right at the edge. What can I/we do.
I love how during your conclusion GSP goes to chase a smell and all the Labs gather up like its story time. Can't pay for that kind of breed advertising 😂.

My vet said the same thing, but thank God I heard you 1st, so my puppy got taken to the ocean dog beach when he was 2 months old , where there were hundreds of dogs. We went on shopping trips to Home depot, Lowes, and tire shops. Anywhere dogs were allowed. We hiked in the country every day, and walked neighborhoods where strange dogs would bark at the fences, and occationally run up to us to investigate. He is a year old now, and I can take him anywhere, and know that he will behave properly.All thanks to you. I shudder to think what this active dog would be like if I had waited til he was 6 months old like my vet wanted
Why did the vet want to wait six months for exposure? I've heard of up to 16 weeks for vaccines to optimize but never 24 weeks.
You are so right about socializing!!!! I have 2 dogs. One of them was socialized from a very young age and is happy and well adjusted. The younger dog was sick for the entire first year we had him and then covid hit. Now I'm working really hard to get him comfortable in the world he lives in. It's going to take patience and time but he will get there! Thank you for your videos. So helpful!!!
My 3 yr old GSP Rex was crated his first 9 months by the first owner in his apartment and didn’t get any socialization. The breeder took him back and had him on a farm for 3 months and worked with him but he didn’t get much socialization for those 3 months. I got him at a year and everything Stonnie is talking about I’ve had to do for the last 2 years; impulse control, whoa training, attention span. Trying to catch up socialization and get him to live in his world seemed impossible sometimes but he’s turned into an excellent hunter and family pet because the whole family has been supportive and patience. He's not as socialized as I'd like but we keep working. And yes a butterfly will still cause him to forget about everything.
She had more in the tank even when the Labs were gassed? That’s incredible.
On a side note, I couldn’t imagine a situation in which people think isolating young, energetic, healthy creatures and depriving them of socialization and fun is a good idea. That would be lunacy…..

I agree, and yet people do it all the time, that is isolate and reatrict activities.

I totally agree with Stonnie about socialisation as a vaccination for the mind. I have a rescue terrier mix who was born approximately in february 2020 and whom I got in december 2020. So, due to Covid, he must have missed a lot of socialisation opportunities. We've come a loooooooong way and now I can take him basically everywhere, malls, flea markets, any means of transportation, on piers, visiting friends, in the mountains, in cafés, hiking and sleeping in a tent or kayaking but it was A LOT of work.
So I really do think that early socialisation, a lot of it and done in the right way, trumps over fear of diseases.
On a side note, I'm Italian and have been living in Sweden for the past 10 years. At least in these two European countries I have never ever heard of people not wanting to or being advised against taking their puppies out and about.
totally agree!!! Its very sad how many dogs ended up crazy from covid times of social isolation. Many of those dogs were euthanized. To me, the risk of no early socialization is high and must be avoided. Disease risk can be minimized by avoiding high risk places like dog parks
Now that’s the kind of vaccination that should be mandatory!
Thankfully, neither vet I’ve seen has said anything about waiting to do anything with my Malinois puppy! They know I’ve already raised one and will do as I intend to do with this one also. I think there is a peace of mind with not only being environmentally aware (just don’t be stupid and take them to dog parks and such) but also knowing nutritionally and supplementally their immune systems are strong. Healthy gut, skin, eyes, ears, no infections, etc. Prayer and faith are paramount also! Shaping the minds early is vital.
Agree 100%, I have a Dutch/Malinois and I was at Home Depot and anywhere/everywhere (starting at 8 weeks of age) I could take him (non dog populated areas) to introduce him to people, sights, sounds, smells,surfaces and anything that he could question and learn from. To me socialization is just as important if not more then vaccines (and I work as a Vet Assistant). Ian Dunbar (veterinarian/behaviorist) said they need to meet at least 300 humans before 16 weeks of age, I agree.
I don't want my dog to be a nerve bag or afraid. My dog is indifferent to other dogs, I have his main focus on me, myself and my family is his pack, not other dogs. Now that his foundation is built I am not really interested in much else but to just work my dog and keep his mind sharp. He goes everywhere with me and nothing is a big deal.

On the subject of Ian Dunbar though, have you ever seen him out with a bunch of dogs, doing interesting stuff?

Thanks for all the good stuff coming from the channel. With a new ginger ninja (fox red) Lab pup, and a decade since our last Lab pup (an absolute angel of a black lab) its great to hear and be reminded of what it right, and your common sense (common sense not being very common in this world). So a big thanks from both me and the pup. Great tips - i've been trying to mix it up and get to different places with him, sounds, big dogs, small dogs, a couple the size of a house, to the nearby town where literally hundreds of motorbikes congregate every sunny sunday, some days walk past the new building site close by, some days past the fields of sheep and cows, some times into some shops that are ok with dawgies (businesses that welcome dogs are businesses that get my business !). Long grass, woods, a stream for a mini paddle, etc. He's really come out of his shell in the weeks we've had him - 1st day at the end of the drive he saw a husky and wanted to run back to his bed in the house. Now he's wanting to walk with her and play with the other big dogs in the fields behind the house.
I've done the same thing as you too with both our previous lab and this fella - he's off the lead in the fields and woods, as I can catch him up at 3 and 4 months old (and he doesnt want to go far away from me anyway) - whereas there is no hope of catching him if I wait until 6 or 8 months before he is off the lead.
Love watching you. To bad not closer, my niece just got a golden retriever and my nephew just got a pit bull. And neither have the time for them. We just had to put our 16yr old JRT to sleep so we try to help them. Of course they are trying to destroy everything.
Golden Retriever is man’s best friend.
So this is exactly why I always hear people out, even if at the outset I am sure that I'll disagree with them. Not only did I hear some of the most sound reasoning for anything to supercede vaccines, but I also witnessed something I wish I saw more of in modern humanity. The ability to politely disagree. You have zero expectation that Rex will change his mind, but still choose to share your perspective for all the good it may offer. You can accept friends with differing opinions to your own. That is something I'd like to see more of in society. Thank you for sharing.
The problem is the world operates in extremes. I adopted a Taco Terrier that had missed her window for early socialization and took her to the 3rd largest city. It took patience, planning and dedication, but she still experienced the world while she was getting vaccines. Twenty minutes sitting in a busy parking lot, kind friends with dogs that were safe, lots of car rides to new and scary places. The library before opening time. She especially loved drive-through businesses and many offer safe treats for dogs. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I called them sniff-safaris.

Love to hear this perspective and for sure giving me things to think on. I for sure am more cautious about all the disease risk factors for my dogs.
That said I was always taught that it’s best to use that time for environmental socialising and just not dog socialising.
I can imagine though that folks who are far more cautious and don’t accurately risk assess could probably arrive at the conclusion “the only safe exposure is no exposure” and wind up with all sorts of dog problems. In fairness I don’t have to imagine that. We’ve all seen how that goes.

Wish I had seen this video 2 months ago. Our German Shepard mix rescue is 4 months old now. And he won’t hardly listen to me any more.( he likes my husband better)I was told not to take him out because of parvovirus. But I would walk him in the neighborhood. And let people pet him if they wanted to. Now I’m concerned about lost time.

I agree with what you are saying. But what do you do when your dog gets plenty of outside time and playtime with kids and gets training time every morning, but still runs off when calling for her?

I’m in L.A. and everybody in my hood is obsessed with vaxes for their dog. And if you get within 50’ of their pup they scurry off. The funny thing though, is they’ll then put their dog in a daycare all the time, where they then get sick. Lol I took my whippet pup out from day one and just tried to stay away from super high dog traffic areas and slowly build up to that. But I never take him to daycare and he has minimal vaxes. I’m my experience, people use vaxes as a crutch and it cancels basic common sense.
Here in the UK the recommendation is that Parvo vaccines are active at around 12 weeks. Vets run puppy socialisation classes to cover the few weeks after leaving their litter that they aren't allowed out. After that dogs are out and about.
From my experience, and I work for a lot of people in the UK, the socialization recommendations are quite a bit more restrictive than this comment might lead one to believe.
Keeping puppies within the confines of their gardens, which are typically very small, no neighborhood walks, carrying the puppy when going out, etc…
I don’t think I’ve ever done a class for someone in the UK whose vet recommended going out and exploring after their 12 week vaccinations.
Granted, my experience is based on a relatively small sample size, but the recommendations seem to be the same across the board.

@Grinding_Gears I think you must be very fortunate with either your vet and/or your particular location in the UK, certainly the majority of puppies and dogs I worked with in the London and Home Counties areas are very precious - owners with no previous dog experience, terrified of their ‘baby’ getting hurt leads to dogs who have no recall, no proper socialisation skills with other dogs, people or children, no skills in the groomers (mainly because they are given absolutely ridiculous advice from ill informed amateur breeders or none at all from puppy farmers), silly 5 minute exercise rules, don’t let them walk up and down stairs rules……

Yes, both points of view are super valid. I’ve seen a lot of parvovirus in my time.

I´d say not from too much socialisation but from over stimulation.
Especially with a dog like yours (had a Lab myself), please be aware of over exercising or over stimulation.
Make sure you show her how and when to calm down.
This very important thing is what most ppl. forget to do - dogs and humans suffer for years under the stress this could cause.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “my dog likes people more than other dogs” while they restrict their dog from smelling my dog or vice versa.
It takes all I have to NOT say “ well, what are you doing about it?”
That's strange. My dog often told other dogs that I like other dogs more than I like other people. (and being a Black Lab, he was absolutely right).❤
