  • In this season 1 finale episode, which was filmed live at SHU Community Theatre in Connecticut, PBS TV chef/restaurateur/author Lidia Bastianich reminisces about her idyllic hometown, her Italian family being forced to flee a new Slavic Communist government, 2 years in a refugee camp, and immigration to America. Settling in Queens, NY, she grows from a Queens restaurant owner to a culinary star by being true to the flavors of her youthful homeland. A wise, funny, remarkable woman!

Very interesting view of postwar central Europe and the influences brought by the families to the US, then the influence on the families by the urban New York/New Jersey area. She achieved so much with her family members all working together and bringing their own support and influence.
My now-deceased cousin was totally influenced by summers in Northern Italy with his paternal relatives, their centuries-old methods, recipes and life revolving around the kitchen, and by the love and attention he received from them that was totally lacking in the life he lived the rest of the year on a Rhode Island farm with his maternal grandparents, while his mother and father pursued their careers in Boston. He, in turn, enriched my life through our conversations and the many glimpses he shared with me of the intriguing facets of his experience and personality. I can see that in Lydia's recounting of her life.
