I especially love these because Andrew Sachs is Dr. Watson! Hearing him portray a serious character after being introduced to him as Manuel from Fawlty Towers is so much fun. What a phenomenal actor!
The victorian era and up until the 2nd world war have been well documented for people wanting to believe in the after life and being ruthlessly exploited by it-loved the story/acting thank you
First transmitted 30 January 2002, this story is based on a reference from Doyle's short story "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb": "There were only two [cases] which I was the means of introducing to his notice-that of Mr. Hatherley’s thumb, and that of Colonel Warburton’s madness." Watson's old commanding officer is alarming his family with his interest in spiritualism.
The irony here is thick. Conan Doyle himself was a serious proponent of seances and spiritualism. Maybe he was being blackmailed too. Actually I believe he lost a son in WW1

He was fantastic! A true tragedy in his early death

Bert is the top man for radio dramatists

LOL "To the Berkshires"
Berkshire Hunts = Cockney rhyming slang.

Somewhat entertaining, with a weak plot that fails to resolve in its entirety.
Not one of Holmes' finest, but Bert Coules did well enough. 8 out of 10.
