Phish Rift Promo by Elektra. Sent to College Radio Stations, Record Stores etc. to promote new album. Converted to digital by Eric W. @ericwyman from original VHS tape.
54 seconds in is my driver's license. I was actually 22 and still had my Texas under 21 license. I can see my name and the address of the home where I grew up. And I recall them trying to interview me at Mississippi Nights. Unfortuantely, I freaked out with the lights and camera and went on and on about how Trey ruled the universe and Phish was the greatest rock and roll band that nobody yet knew about.
When I was 13 in 96 I got Hoist on tape. Then my next album by phish was Rift on cd. I think this changed me forever in that it opened a door in my mind of art, music and what’s possible. Such a good album!! Love phish always
Rift is the first album my friend Marshall turned me into whilst in the car headed to band practice. I was already a Dead fan but since 1990 something I have been devoted to Phish the same as Dead.
Actually, they did film Shoreline, and it was the pro-shot from the board and the pit. It was widely traded back in the day, and used to be on YT, but I can't find it anymore. The shot of Fishman and the gong is from Port Chester 1992, either Faht from 11/27 or Love You from 11/28. As you can see, he is wearing a hat that some dude from the crowd gave him - it was a gas station trucker hat that simply read "New Jersey" in Asbury Park type script in front of a cornucopia...for some reason.
The dressing room at the end, Beth's interview footage (who messes with that?), and some of the crowd scenes when the dancers are going nuts (Hi Katy!) were shot at Mississippi Nights in St Louis in December 1992.
what night/song is this lady talkin about (5:00 mark) where in port cheser, trey played the bass notes on guitar and mike played the guitar riff on his bass? I must hear this asap!
@parkerjh - They didn't play Keene in the fall of '92, when this was filmed for the Elektra Rift promo pack. The bulk is from Port Chester, Mississippi Nights, and the 8/29/92 Shoreline pro-shot from the Santana tour. There were four "Phish only" shows from May '92 to November '92: Norfolk, Charlottesville and Richmond in July and San Juan Capistrano in August. I know three of the four arm-in-arm guys out in front of the Capitol, and Beth "who messes with that" Senturia at Mississippi Nights.
@thewall388 The part about Trey and Mike switching parts is what they play on You Enjoy Myself. They've done it like that I think everytime they play but i'm not positive
@sirchandestroy ah, very possible it was Porthchester, could have sworn it was Keene that the interview took place at the 4:50 mark. Even looks like Keene. Nevertheless, you know the guy all the way to the left? I used to see him and talk to him at many shows, but can't for the life of me remember his name. thanks, P
I don't think this was ever on TV, no. It was a VHS tape and I think it was sent with other promo material to college radio stations (and presumably others) to promote Rift. The tapes gradually worked themselves around and got into the hands of fans (like me). It was pretty boring but ages well and becomes much more fun to watch all these years later.

Rift was my phirst Phish cd purchase. I loved it and still do, Nectar and Rift were a huge part of my days in college.
With a promo vid like this, I'm surprised Rift didn't sell better

If I didn't already own Rift, this video would make me buy it.
