I got to meet Mitch at Sweetwater, and in the short moment there was I said, "Love your demos. They help me.". Now we get Don on board in the same video! Two great talents.
These two guys are so professional & informative in their delivery. So very much to be learned from these guys; invaluable to us all, beginnger, intermediate or pro level players. Soaking it all up! Love love love it Sweetwater!
I am in my mid-60s and have been playing the guitar since age nine! I consider myself to be an expert because that's how I made my living all these years but I have to say that it never fails to amaze me when I listen to these guys talk about gear! I learn something every time and what I'm learning is really useful stuff that has helped to shape and improve the quality of my tone and thus improve the quality of my playing as well! Thanks to Mitch and Don here for all they do man!
This is the best gear video I've ever seen on your channel! Showing off real, used gear by someone who has really had a chance to get into the features and sounds, and has tailored the setup to their particular needs and wants. None of this, "Oh yeah, I read the manual last night, got to fiddle with knobs this morning, so let me show you what this does this week!" An *honest* deep-dive :). You have so many talented musicians at SW, you should do an episode for each person. I'm sure you'll have a hundred different setups to go through, and by the time you loop around, people will have had a chance to get new gear, test things out, and get to know whole new setups. You could call it... Rigs of Sweetwater: of the People, by the People, and for the People. Or, something shorter.... lol :)
Love the practice board. Been using the Ditto for ages, but the Freeze is an excellent addition. Also, no frills, just delay and drive so no chance to get distracted by things that aren't relevant when studying.
This was super helpful, interesting, and an even sweeter gift from Sweetwater than the baggies of candy they put in with their packages. Thanks for a great new series, guys! Keep up the great work!
Happy New Year to Sweetwater! This is undoubtedly the smartest combination of a pedal board. Mitch also created the solution for my future pedalboard for me. Excellent interview from Don. Great job - thanks!
You set the bar pretty high for the first of a series. There are plenty of players who have a wider palette of sounds than Mitch needs, but few can articulate the how and why as well. Okay, maybe Eric Johnson or Andy Timmons. Fantastic video, and I can’t wait to see future installments.
So cool, I really enjoyed this!😍 So yes if my vote counts for anything, please please keep making these😉 Oh and I totally agree with both of you on the personal nature of workflow and putting together a board/rig -I know my pedalboard certainly is a pretty accurate representation of my crazy brain laid out on a board heehee😁
Thanks for the good demo. I play a stereo rig for years. From my experience the flexibility of switching the delay and the reverb from serial to parallel is important. The reason is: sending a delay into the hall increases the reverb too much. Lowering the delay volume is not a solution as then a nice timing delay is not audible enough. This can only be done in parallel setup. I use fractal fx8 in the four cable method. I can change every configuration by a switch of a button. And I can use it with my tube pre and power amp.
Genius board, and I have watched hundreds of rig rundowns. Good music too. Thorough explanation. Only thing I’d say is Mitch would love both Diamond and Empress pedals, both of which they don’t- and should- carry at Sweetwater. So hopefully that can happen.
I missed the ABC switching of the MD-500. I’ve never seen it demonstrated and somehow missed it on the Boss page. I am officially off the fence about it now. Thanks Mitch!
It's a really cool feature. The only thing you sacrifice is the onboard tap tempo function. When I need that, I connect an external foot switch. Thanks! Mitch
Cool pedalboard, Mitch is all set up to do Zeppelin to Zappa and all in between. I spent an afternoon with all the different reverbs on a TC. I loved the Johnny hiland "neon blues" that's what I downloaded onto the Hall of Fame. Really cool board !
Great job guys!. This is very helpful. The Eric Johnson video was awesome as well. I'm dizzy from watching hours and hours and hours of pedalboard videos, trying to decide which brand, what size and which pedals make the final cut; and should I use the RJM PBC6X I bought on impulse or not? Should I implement MIDI? Heck I cant find time to program the Source Audio Nemesis and Ventris pedals I recently bought. And of course as you watch all these videos you get the impulse to buy more pedals. I need to sell more than I need to buy. Why do we do this? Anyway, I love the new What's on you pedalboard (WOYP) video series. This video is particularly helpful. The BOSS modulation and delay pedals appear to workout quite well with the spacing of the three switches and the flexibility to program it for mono and stereo. After watching this I feel like I can slow my brain down and forgo the idea of using the RJM and MIDI. I look forward to reading comments from the community. Thanks so much for doing these pedalboard videos.
My question is, when you switch amps but keep that pedal setup, what do you do with your amps footswitch?? This has been a big part of my difficulty switching rigs since my amp footswitch is on my board and if I take it off it feels a bit like wasted space. One thing I've considered is setting up a separate smaller board to accommodate that style rig. Edit: this was a great informative video, and I always love watching you guys, Don and Mitch, together!
Great question! If you notice, the amp footswitch on the board has two switches, but the Boogies only require one switch for channel switching, I ignore the other switch when I'm using those amps. The same footswitch works with my other amps, and supports channel switching and a gain boost function. Hope this helps, Mitch
@@sweetwaterthanks, Mitch that definitely helps! I guess my issue now is that my amp's footswitch is made specifically for it, as far as I know. I have an Egnater Renegade 60 watt and the footswitch has some great functions like selecting which channel each switch (fx loop, reverb and boost) apply to as well as spillover from the loop and reverb signals for smoother switching. I don't want to damage anything if I plug it up to another amp that can't handle those capabilities. Any suggestions there? Thanks again for responding!
@@Opi_812 In that case, I would not mount the footswitch to the board. I would set whatever footswitch is needed for whichever amp beside or in front of the pedalboard. That way you aren't locked in, you aren't wasting space, and you still have control over the amps' functions as needed. I know it's not as neat as having everything on the board, but it is likely more functional for that scenario. Hope this helps! Mitch
@@sweetwater Makes total sense. That's the setup I had before anyway so I'll probably just go back to that. The on-board setup, like you said it's neat but it was mainly just for carrying convenience. Either way, you inspired me to make a second homemade board for a fly rig style setup! I just gotta add some Velcro and I'm set. Again, thank you so much!
My Freeze makes so much noise when I hook it up to my small practice board like that. Maybe I need that power supply you mentioned. Right now I’m just using a one spot for that little board.
Really enjoyed this. Sounds Great. I love the Blue Note & the DD-500 = 2 incredible pedals. I may grab that little (space saving) HotOne. Your Rotary Sound was Killer. How are you Powering the Larger Friedman Pedalboard? Happy Holidays from NYC.
Glad you like the Rotary sound. The key with the MD-500 was getting the balance of the wet/dry signals right in the preset. I don't own the larger Friedman anymore (someone here at Sweetwater bought it from me when I realized that this board was big enough for what I need) but it was set up in the same way as this one, with the Friedman power supply and interface box.

Yes, I’m totally happy with the StroboStomp HD - I’ve got two, one on each board. I’ve also switched over to the StroboClip HD for clip-on tuning - I have three of them with cases so I can throw them in gig bags or acoustic guitar cases. I’m a Peterson convert! Mitch
I don't own either, but I checked the manual -- I don't see the mono/stereo setting. Of course, the unit will default to mono when you connect it in mono, and you could still customize each preset to sound the same in mono or stereo. Hope this helps, Mitch
I’m 46 and have just almost completed making my first pedal board. Could you share the DD500 'Dual' settings you used here please, it's my favorite delay patch and the only reason I have the DD500. Also, are you using something not shown here to split to stereo amps?
I'll check the DD-500 settings for you, it's nothing special, though. Not using anything to split the signal beyond the pedals: mono into MD-500, stereo from MD-500 to DD-500, stereo from DD-500 to Hall of Fame, stereo back to the two amps' effects returns. Hope this helps! Mitch

Thanks! Friedman has a great design. The entire board has been working great for me! Mitch

Wow- that Hotone wah/volume is brilliant. What a space saver.
