This is an insanely outstanding interview. I usually never ever comment on videos, but here I am at night watching this from my small town in Spain, when Dan Milnor is putting into words what me (and I’m sure that thousands) of other photographers have felt but not been able to so clearly express... Bravo sir, there is still hope. Muchas gracias 🙏
I also have never commented on videos. But here I am, in my garage (hiding from tiny humans), listening and now commenting on Dan Milnor's interview. It's amazing. Thank you for saying all of this out loud. You are helping me to go my own way
"...that's where you're not a photographer; you happen to use photography but you are a creative member of society." That seems to describe Sebastião Salgado to a T. He's the reason I got back into photography after 20 years of being away.
This is one of those interviews one should listen/watch again and again. It has so much. I wish more people would come to this and hear him. The last half of the interview is a gold mine.
@@benthompson7139 I would correct it, but TH-cam won't allow me to replace the video. I'd lose all the comments and views and SEO related to the video. I can make a note in the video notes, but TH-cam doesn't have a way to update the video file like Vimeo does to fix errors.
This is my favorite interview of Dan. I try not to miss any of them on AYP. Thank you for sharing this interview you have an ocean of information, insight and just plain down to earth love of photography that is very motivating. I'm getting into photography a little late in the game, but I shot what I like and hope to leave a body of work behind for my daughter to look at and share with her family. I'm printing a lot more than I ever did thanks to a Dan's advice to get it off hard drives and into people's hands. Be well and safe.
Me too. I’m late to photography and I’m still trying to find my voice. The least I can do right now is be a historian for my family and document as much as I can (hopefully in a creative way), so that future generations can look back and see how where our family came from and the things we lived through.
Dan is a genius and I always appreciate his perspective. One minor caption error: the vertical shot of the kid with the gun is William Klein, not W Eugene Smith
Thanks for watching Bradley! Yeah, the mistake is acknowledged in the video notes. I wish TH-cam would let you replace a video file without losing all the comments/engagement associated with it.
Thank you for the video Dan. The thing about printing is very true. After watching one of your video, I was inspired to make a book and when I start curating my "best" images, I was left with literally 1 photo of all 10k+. Now I am inspired to have projects and come up with books. Also when I print my landscape photos and hang them on my wall, I can spot improvements and the best part of my images, better than the 32-inch 4K monitor that I have. It is a valuable comment and the ones who pursue photography without printing are missing out one of the best critic they could get. Digital transformation in general; commoditized many creative fields including writers. Now there is influx of information and you need to really cut through the digital noise in order to find what you are looking for. To do that, you need to have least amount of distraction which is rare.
Print is not only important, it's fun. Watching a print come up in the darkroom or watching it slowly emerge from an inkjet is such a wonderful feeling.
A very significant and thought provoking interview, which should be included in the curriculum of all photography course taught to students and aspiring photographers. Will they listen...perhaps they’ll listen now.
Students are in an interesting spot. What to do when the actual industry is going away? I still think photography is a great thing, and better as a small part of a larger discussion. However, you see a Trent Parke show and my faith is restored.
He's a good guy, I like listening to him regarding his person and his way of photography of course. Truly inspiring. Thanks for this Interview & Upload.
This is an outstanding interview. Just obe thing to say: The photograph of the boy with the pistol pointing at the camera is a photograph by William Klein. It is not made by Eugene Smith.
I’m glad you enjoyed it. Yes, it’s been pointed out multiple times about my mistake with the image by William Klein. I made a note in the video details and I would replace the video if TH-cam would let you. My only option is to delete the video and lose all the traction gained and reupload a new edit. I’m hoping TH-cam will eventually let you replace videos like Vimeo does without losing all the comments and engagement. Thanks again for watching and pointing out the error.
Yeah, that's my fault! Unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't let you upload a replacement video to correct errors like this. I made a note in the video description about the error. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it.
I like Daniel and following his work, talks, interviews, etc. but I wonder why are the Steve Shore photos at min 20:40ff considered great and not considered as snapshots ? I have this difficulty with various works considered as great, some of them I get it but others I don't.
Dimiitris, I think it is down to how our minds and life experiences help us appreciate different images. That is the wonder of photography or say paintings. If we all reacted the same, we would only ever need a handful of paintings or famous photos, and life would be boring.
Thanks for the Sub! Sorry about the Klein/Smith thing. That's my fault. I wish I could upload a corrected video over this one, but TH-cam doesn't allow that unlike Vimeo.
Yes you are correct. The video notes mention the error. I didn’t want to take it down because it resets all the traffic the video has received. If TH-cam had a video file replacement feature I would swap it out, but my only option is to delete the entire thing.
Thanks for letting us know. Yes, we've posted about this mistake in the details of this video. That's my fault, but TH-cam won't let you replace a video of an existing post with a new/corrected video. So we posted about our mistake in the video details.
"Content is the work that crosses your eyes but never connects with your brain". A quote I won't forget.
Same. I have it written and hanging on my wall.

'Fearless, take chances, fail on a regular basis and don't conform', a perfect recipe for happiness and success
I've watched lots of Dan's talks and interviews and they're always inspiring and thought provoking.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing. Dan's great. We have 2 shorter segments that we will be releasing as well.
Thanks Amigo, glad you are finding something you like
Nobody mentioned it so I thought I would: The first "W. Eugene Smith" image (the two boys, one with the gun) was actually a William Klein photograph.
Dangit! Great catch. So sorry about that.
@@MUSEA I hope this warrants more of a response than simply "Dangit!".

@@benthompson7139 I added an Update to the video description. I hope that helps explain the error.
@@MUSEA Thanks very much for your attention to this! Given the content of this video and Dan's other films, it makes a difference. Thanks again!
Every photographer needs to watch this interview. Looks like I've found my mentor. I can listen to him talk all day. This is great!!
Yes, this is much different than the normal photography crap on TH-cam. This guy is a true industry pro who knows what he is talking about.

I need to do this interview justice and listen again, and take extra notes. Really blows my mind.

So honest!! Straight talking!!!! And a true mentor to an awful lot of us!!
I am LOVING this guy's story. I'm part of the same generation and completely agree with so much he says.
Thank you for the video Dan.

Raj !!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Boys with a pistol is William klein
Yes! It was a mistake I made and I made a note of that in the notes. Thanks!
Hmmmm. Ten percent of photographers do 100% of the creative work. I think Dan's being optimistic.
Thanks for an interesting video.
