I never picked up a guitar until l was sixty five, my son left some years before and left me his guitar, six years on and thanks to you I have mastered this iconic solo you can’t imagine what it means to me, being stuck at home for the last year the guitar has been my saviour, I have watched many TH-cam guitar lessons however your calming sense of fun with expertise has really inspired me to play this piece, Black Dog, Ramble On , I will never be the Guitar God you are but I can dream thank you 🙏🤘🏻

He who climbs Mt Fuji once is a wise man; he who climbs twice is a fool "富士山に一度も登らぬバカ、二度登るバカ"
I think better translated as “He who never climbs Mt. Fuji is a fool, fool as he who climbs it twice.”
But climb it 23 times and still you may never experience that perfect sunrise or get that once in a lifetime picture. Anyway that must be a record and more power to you. You must have gone through 23 pairs of shoes scratching through the volcanic cinders.
Anyways this vid is excellent. My dad was a professional musician and I dabbled in it through college and ever since but I’m a beginner on guitar and still struggling to nail the intro.
This is way too advanced for me but my better-than-tin ear can appreciate the excellence. I’ll be back in a few months.

Killer video. I just got the complete, official studio recordings guitar anthology. According to the book, for the final ascending pattern before the fast shredding licks begin, you call it LICK 5, he goes back to the F on the 8th fret of the A string, and then ascends up the pentatonic positions through there. You can also hear on the recording that he is playing on those thicker strings high up, vs. the thinner strings lower on the neck. Obviously, the notation and melody is identical in your version, so I'm not finding fault, just pointing out that there is another place to play it. That's where I naturally went as I'm figuring this out by ear, high up the neck, and other people might prefer to play it there as well. Keep up the great content! Amazing video, once again.

Took the time to learn it properly last night. That big bend from F to A at the end took me by surprise. I do play 9’s with low action (inspired by Page), and even then you have to really push it to the limit.
One thing that I think might be slightly different, which also took me by surprise:
Those two successive bends you were hearing as A to C then A to B (right before that part)… I think they’re just two whole step bends a fret apart (so Bb to C, A to B), on the 11th and 10th frets of the B string…

His live guitar tone on Song Remains the Same is a favorite. So simple but so rock and roll. I want a Royal MSG Plexi one day with the KT88’s. That Live Page Solo on TSRTS : Gibson EDS 1275 is loaded with Gibson T Tops (7.5k Roughcast Short A5 Magnets) that fantastic "Hollow Chirp " sound is the T Tops in the MIDDLE Position.. That will get you the tone. Someone elsewhere commented his toggle switch in the film in pointing down so they thought it was 'treble pickup'... Wrong!. That selector switch visable in the film, selects the 6 or 12 string neck. The pickup selector in the middle of the guitar cannot be seen.
I replicate Jimmys 1973 TSRTS sound on my channel.. The secret sauce is the UNBALANCED pickup set . Not so much the KT88 Plexi. Richie Blackmore used a KT88 Plexi for a completely different tone. The Royal Plexi is great, but the pickups are wrong in that clip.

@@bryanwilliams3665 Wow. I’m 9 months too late checking out your reply. I checked out your channel. You weren’t kidding. You build pickups that can nail that tone so accurately even through your music man amp with the cmatmod brownie overdrive. Everything you said was true. Nice channel by the way. I say 9 months too late because I just finished a cheap Les Paul that played really well by upgrading all hardware and pickups on it. I went with Wizz Pageys and 21 tone JP wiring. It gets pretty close, but if I’d read this earlier I would’ve gone to you for pickups for sure. Maybe in the future though and another Les Paul. Yours are two conducted and no push-pull pots needed? That’s what I got from your videos. I have 4 conductor Wizz Pageys with all knobs on Bourne 500k push pull pots. The amount of sounds is incredible, but I think I could’ve just got a set from you and got every crucial TSRTS sound I’d been after. Probably for less than the Wizz Pageys. I subscribed to your channel so I can reference it in the future for my next set of pickups. I bought a 1959 HW clone for $773 shipped from Grand Amps in China. Had it 4 months now and it’s a keeper. So I have the amp and the Wizz pickups and 21 tone wiring nail it pretty close. Not sure as close as yours though. Your sound examples come closer than I’ve ever heard.

The only reason people hate this song is because after 50 years , they're just tired of it as a whole . And i do sympathize with the point .
But , there is NO denying this solo !!
It has it all in emotion, and just raw
WOW factor ,even after all the years since its conception , and i say "conception " as to all the dreams and hopes it birthed. Viva la Page!!!

If you listen carefully to the record, you’ll hear Page slide down to the F note on the 4th string at the end of the minor pentatonic phrase in the first part of the solo - instead of playing it on the 8th fret on the 5th string 1:49.

Because it was cut together, who knows? Years ago I did slide back and I do so in my original cover. However, I don’t think you get the definition or control of the note. When you slow it right down it’s so warped. What’s to say we’re not hearing the slide of the barre chord from G down to F and confusing that sonically? I like staying in the first position there. At least we can all agree it’s an F.

This is a wonderful lesson, thank you! Tiny tiny discrepancy for anyone who might have taken the wrong option: at 13:02 and 13:34 you play G(bend) E D E D *C* A.... (which seems to be the correct version). When doing it slowly at 13:18 you miss out the C (13 on the B string). Like I said, this is tiny and I am sure the Patreon tab is correct :)

He just goes for it live, throwing in a few of the famous licks. You can look at it two ways: “I’m sad I wanted to hear the exact solo” or “I got to see the man himself deliver something unique in a moment, just me and this crowd.”

Thanks to your video, I've been able to hear this solo so much more clearly. I remember the first timed I saw/heard a youtube vid about it by someone, and I posted, Oh man, you did it EXACTLY! Only to come back a year or two later realizing there were always extra notes. YOURS is the closest I've ever heard, with only one extra note (hammer-on) at :47--AND GUESS WHAT? RIGHT NOW I HEAR THAT NOTE IN THE ORIGINAL, AFTER NEVER HAVING HEARD IT IN MY LIFE. I was going to point out that you missed a spot, and I'M the one who's been missing it. Thank you. I got my first guitar at 14 and the first riff I learned was black dog cus I was such a page fanatic. Within a couple months I’ll eaten the whole song including the solo. I feel like starting the way I did learned such a weird riff and a even weirder solo really helped me with learning how to solo the way page, Joe Perry and some of the great rock n roll players put together solos. Stairway solo came pretty quick due to already knowing a lot of the same phrasing techniques and note placements. Still to this day it’s my go to jam when I pick up my guitar at now at the age of 31. Page will forever be the best in my mind.

I completely understand what you mean by the "swing" youre talking about. I call it a "groove". Especially 8:21 thru 9:17. And if you dont get it, its gonna be hard to piece it all together and have it sound right.

    • @SpedSpedding
      @SpedSpedding  3 ปีที่แล้ว

And its funny that all the years I listened to that song and never paid any attention to the musical expression in that one part. But when I focused on it to play it, it pops out like its actually trying to say something. Thats the only way i can explain it. Because when I was trying to play it without noticing it, it wasnt making sense. I was thinking, "Hows this supposed to be a solo? Just a bunch of notes out of time". Turns out they were on time, I wasnt on time. Until I felt the groove. Then it all came together. And if its not played in the right pattern, it just wont sound right.
Im glad you got it right. As soon as I saw how you did it, I reblistered my ring finger getting it in and the old way out.
So thank you very much. I only have the last 4 licks to do (easy peasy). But wanna master the rest 1st, then add those on. Thanx again. 🤞🤞🤞

As a guitar player and a MAJOR Zeppelin fan to the point that the first book I ever read for pleasure was called "Hammer of the Gods" a Zeppelin biography at the age of 12 or so and I really enjoyed that!
I learned the chords from tab and I've played Stairway since I started at 16 and although I can really jam in minor pentatonic Ive had a few "droughts" if you will. Yrs spent not playing, playing with a vengeance for a couple weeks and then not playing for a couple of months, wanting to play but not having the time, etc...
I just bought a Fender Squier Affinity SSS and a Fender Mustang LT25 modeling amp, and I mean just. September.
I've yet to get into a regimented practice routine due to some health issues but I'll soon play at least an hour a day, get my chops back and take it from there.
I never did learn the solo to Stairway for the afformentioned reasons and maybe a little bit of intimidation, I'm not sure. Lack of discipline? I don't know but I never fully committed to it but I intend to. The TH-cam algorithm suggested this and the next time I play it'll be that(after some warming up of course 😂) Especially having watched your video man. Looks, sounds right to me. I'm not going to make that 5 step bend but in time I'll get there. You're humility combined with a pleasant demeanor, nice sounding voice, accent is pleasant.
I just thought you broke it down so well, you got really close in tone. Just cause it's a Les Paul doesn't mean that you will find it right? I think you got it. Overall it's an excellent tutorial video, I could see and hear everything, just really well done man!
Keep on, Stan in Miami ☮️🎸🎶🙏

I can do it with 9s on a Strat, but I'm glad I only have to do it once. If you're using 10s+, G to A sounds OK I guess -that's how I always did it, although it never sounded quite right.
