    Thanks a lot, man :)) Your style of ridding is inspiration for a number of our students!! We've never seen such stylish combine carved turns and freestyle elements before you started your channel. Keep it going, Ryan :)

      Thanks to your articles, I learned to carve while lying on a slope, I used angles of +15 +30 and at some point stagnation began, but this guy inspired me to set up -15 +15. After a couple of trainings I started to ride quite confidently in a switch (sometimes even forget what my leading leg is). Now I am learning buttering while carving and I really love it - thank you both for the inspiration and the lessons.

    Love these backside carves. That body rotation is the technique surfers use when they do their big heel side top turns. Looks so good. I played around with the Russian funcarve technique (soft boots, high binding angles), last winter moved to a 28cm wide board and 15/15 angles because it felt better (and I guess I will order a wider Donek for next winter). I also bought smaller boots last week. :-) It is nice to see these techniques coming together. I really like your style most as it looks surfy. Off to the Arlberg tomorrow. Surf´s up!

    Ryan's videos and instructions are excellent, way better than I ever did when I was an instructor, plus he can really carve.
    I would love to see what he could do with plates and hard boots on a carving board.

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      😃🤟. On hard boots I haven't ridden them extensively, so it's always a bit of a mental / physical trip to get accustomed to using the sides of the boots to engage the edges vs. front / back on my 15,-15 stance angles. So my turns on that gear so far isn't nearly as seamless. Perhaps someday.

    I actually like the carve where you keep you body in Line with the board more then the agressive Carve. It's also the way we learn our students how to carve.
    I guess it's a difference in style between europe and the US.
    I do love your style though. Specially mixing the freestyle with the carving is really insperational. It also shows you can mix it around. Most students think you can't and then often I show one of your videos.

    Off to the French Alps again next Friday and CANNOT WAIT to get practicing and thinking!!! It'll be my last holiday before I get a donek sorted and shipped to the UK! Can you have a little think about talking about binding flex and your preferences for your style these days. It's 100% the direction I'm taking and working on, versus park. How does binding flex affect carving performance? Thanks as always!

  • @1carusjohn32

    Timely post! Off to the alps for my second week of the season on Sunday --- the first week I barely get back to where I left off last year -- note to all boarders --- Ryan turns all you think you knew on its head, honestly, professional teachers need to keep up with this stuff -- there are people that teach the stuff in books and then there are people that do the stuff that should / will be written in the books. That rotation, which on so many occasions is specifically eliminated during 'lessons' makes that heel side turn look amazing..... it looks so right! Just wish I had more than 14 days a year to perfect what you teach. Ryan, although the movement is in the upper body, do you think the whole movement somehow allows the force 'bending' board, through the legs , to generate an arc in the edge that is more naturally following the curve of the carve? Does it feel like you are hardly ' fighting' to hold the edge. ( Not that you ever look like you era fighting anything)

    You may have given me the tool to finally get that heelside indie. Currently my upper body is square with the board on heelsides and I can't quite reach the board..... that upper body twist may just get me the extra few cm..... need to get out on a hill.... all this snow but with high winds.

  • @pyuuchu

    The thing that made heel side lay down carves possible for me was making sure my shoulders were super rotated as I finish the toe turn. This upper body rotation allows your butt to move into the necessary forward position to do the lay down. Practice it sitting up and down in a chair. Up, down, up, down, up, now rotate your shoulders and try to sit back in your seat, your butt moves to the side huh. This is the key.
    The first 40% of the turn is all about getting your butt down whilst in the upper body rotated position.
    The second 40% of the turn is where your butt is already down, its time to bring your back hand past your knee for the double hander or lay flat for euro party time.
    Finally 20% of the turn is simply bending the knees to allow the board to come under and pick you up for the ride away.

    Thank you for another great video. The upper body rotation reminded me about how you recommend in vid or two back about starting the turn earlier... Wonder if the two techniques are similar or different? Silent upper body was my favourite advise and still think about it. Thanks man

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They absolutely can go hand in hand! Especially with the toeside... I'll be making a video for 'finishing the turn', and that sets you up properly for those early turns. (And on toeside it's easier and you get a nice chance to look up the hill and make sure you're clear to have room for a turn without getting hit from behind. ✔️👍

    I remember heelside seemed easier because of field of view down the mountain. Then as I started getting better at making deep turns I started to hit this point where I could get pretty much standing straight up on my board hand to snow without bending at the waist toes side and on my heelside I was not there. It feels like I was doing the same thing but i don't hold an edge as well and I don't get quite as low. I think some of it is the board and bindings. But I know if the techigue was down it would match the toe side a bit closer than it does. 60 days on the mountain nice. I got like 15ish days. I want more!

    Love the videos and info, Ryan 🙏. I’m sure you’ve mentioned this another video, but out of curiosity, what degrees are both of your bindings set to? When you’re hitting those super clean toe side carves, it looks like there’s some inward rotation with your back leg, correct?

    Does this carve and Ryan's toe carve require speed? I tried doing it on a bunny hill and it's no where near as much lift. Is all of my weight on the leading foot and pressing as hard into the ground as i can? I just started a year ago. How long would it take to learn this and his toe body on the floor carve

  • @Donly1pt
    @Donly1pt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ryan correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks that besides a more agressive body turn you also seem to push with the back foot and pull with the front, forcing the board to a sharper turn. I notice that when comparing to Steven that looks like he's maintaining the same pressure on both feet when doing the carve.

    From what I have been trying, to get a good carved turn, you need to use your front leg to dig the edge in. The simpler way to say this is to use your front leg as much as your back leg if not more. Is it right, Ryan?

    Hi Ryan, awesome shreds as always!! I wanna ask you what you would recommend as a starting point in terms of width and radius...I've been snowboarding for 20yrs and ready to take it to next level but i constantly boot out and its messing with my confidence a lot. I wear size 12 and i weight 195lbs. I try to reach out to Donek, didnt get any answer

    • @RyanKnapton
      @RyanKnapton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey,. For your size boot I'd say 29 cm minimum (if you are using low stance angles like 15,-15). Its a tough call cuz going wider takes some getting use to... But once I've gotten use to it, there's no way I'll ever go back... But had I jumped all the way up to 31.2 from my original 'wide' of 25.8... I don't think I'd have liked it for awhile... But either way with a 29 with I know that will allow for way deeper carving before boot-out... So maybe something around those specs. In general I've been advocating an 8.7 m radius for most people's first wide board. But if you KNOW you want bigger turns and are prepared for making the adjustments to make that work, then something in the 9's could be good. It won't turn as quick or easily but has a smoother feeling on big turns. I let Bryan from one of my previous vids use my 12m yesterday and he was loving it... But I really think that's too much for a lot of people. I'm slow with replying to emails, but if you have further spec questions hit me up at cofooser@gmail.com. And alos check out my work-in-progress website www.nextlevelsnowboarding for some extra insight. Best of luck and happy shredding!

    Only thing I can say is that new guy carves really good. As a beginner you are told to have a silent upper body and don't freaking rotate through the turns etc so you hammer it in to muscle memory and then to do deeeeeeeep carving you have to get schwifty and rotate through the turn .... .
