    That cream-of-beef-and-mushroom stuff that goes under the tater tots is hardly the Depression-era hotdish that Toni lovingly describes. And tater tots were not possible then, although potatoes were a staple. My mom used to make something like that, without milk or Parmesan, of course. It was whatever she had, cooked with some hamburger. She called it "stuck-together."

      Grew up with TT Wonder (as called in our home) Mom used frozen mixed veggies, her home made sneaking mix (corn, few chopped up green beans, diced carrots, diced celery, green pea, + 1\4 finely chopped up bell pepper. After mushrooms, onion, burger finish being prepared. She sprinkled cup of graded cheese then the Tater Tots. Oh it was the crowd pleaser and no whinny about having to eat their vegetables. And if we were lucky she made a loaf soda.

    • @sociopathmercenary
      @sociopathmercenary ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's little minced up pieces of potato that are formed into a small ball or "tot" with salt and a little bit of vegetable oil then pre-baked and sold frozen in bags.
      If you have those preformed hashbrowns in Sweden, you could use those if you cut them into little squares. Otherwise you can probably find an easy recipe to make them yourself if you want to be completely authentic.
      Otherwise, bake some potatoes and refrigerate them. Then shred them up and layer them on top. They might not get as crispy though. Good luck!

    As a native Minnesotan, it kills me to hear them call tater tot hotdish a casserole. It's a hot dish. The term is literally part of the dish's name.

      Agreed. Also, if anyone puts cheese in it or on it, they are communist cheeseheads and need to be banned from MN.

    Times Grill (the shoebox one) had the best burgers/cheeseburgers because the grill had been there for years. The owner built a much bigger Times Grill (staffed by only very beautiful girls/women) with new grills. The burgers/cheeseburgers weren’t as good until years later

    I saw them CC cooks fix butter burgers, many years ago. But never got around to fixing any. I moved out of state and found a Culver's, which claims to make the original butter burger. I went there for my first butter burger. I was very disappointed. When I got home, I went back to the website and found a description of their "butter" burger. Whomever buttered my burger must have used a dry brush, while staring at a picture of a Guernsey cow. Pathetic.

    Okay, I didn't grow up in the Midwest, and I am 47 years old. Don't wants, until I came across this video recently, have I ever heard tater tot casserole referred to as hotdish. That seems like an incredibly Bland, generic name, it doesn't mean a damn thing to anyone who has never heard the term before. Isn't everything you take out of the oven, or pulled off the stove top, a hot dish? If this is truly the name that this recipe has been going by four decades in the Midwest, then someone seriously needs to come up with a new and better name for it.

    @6:03 This dish does NOT EVER contain cheese, for the love of god. It NEVER has. Only cheeseheads from Wisconsin do that. Typical ATK messin it up, lol
    Super simple y'all, right from Minneapolis:
    Cook your hamburger meat, drain, add 2 cans each of Cream of Chicken and Mushroom soup to it. Add a bag of frozen peas and carrots, mix, then layer with tots, pop in 400 oven for 20-30 minutes and done. That's IT. Welcome to MN.

    I saw these recipes weeks ago and yet, the date stamp says this video was posted six hours ago. ATK seems to be recycling older videos and presenting them as new. I've noticed this before. Seems like cutbacks at ATK with fewer REAL new videos.

      There's about a half-dozen TV seasons of both ATK and Cook's Country on this channel dating back several years in both full episode and individual segment format. This is nothing new. The TV episode were recorded for broadcast on PBS first so they'already “old” when they end up here. And ATK has created a number of new series primarily for TH-cam in the past couple of years. But TH-cam is not their main day job - they are first and foremost a publishing company for magazines and cookbooks and all the recipes you see here have already been developed by their test cooks and out in the world in those formats long before you see them here.

    Your little introduction to "hot dishes" was just wrong. Any Minnesotan would tell you that you can have a hot dish that doesn't have tater tots or potato chips on top. Seriously do your research! Our hot dishes have much more variety than that!

    Sorry to say it, but my family unanimously, unconditionally, hated this. We all ate some, and then everyone look at each other and laughed because nobody wanted to say it. It was awful and we threw it all away. I followed the recipe precisely - not my first rodeo with an ATK recipe. The amount of parmesan was overwhelming and blew out the other flavors. I knew it was a lot of parm when I was grating it, but I figured you know what you are doing, and if I don't add the right amount of cheese, the sauce won't be thick enough. The taste was just too unpleasant, and dousing it in ketchup did not even help. The tots sank into the liquid, making leaving them soggy and falling apart - not crispy at all. I have been using your recipes for years. I used your first cookbook to learn how to cook a couple of decades ago. Unfortunately, this was just terrible.
