  • In this video, Mike takes you through the steps that he does every year, in preparing his boat and motor for winter. This was filmed as he was actually doing it.

      I'm glad you liked the video. I also have a 1989 Evinrude (as you saw in the video) and I have been winterizing the motor exactly like you saw in the video since new and it runs like a top.
      Good luck

    Everyone should do this themselves. Know your boat and how it works. It'll be confusing and messy, time consuming, but worthwhile.

    Kyle, I noticed a milky appearance to you lower until oil when drained. Likely some water intrusion. Have your seals checked, hate to see you have to pay for a major repair. Make a good video if you can replace the seals.
    Thanks

      Unless you seen water in the oil when you originally change it, then you should be good to go. Good luck with the new boat.

    I'm getting ready to winterize my boat in the next few weeks and found your video very useful! I talked my local boat dealer the other day and they said they used to recommend storing a boat will a full tank of gas and stabilizer, but now they are recommending having the fuel tank as empty as possible and adding stabilizer. What are your thoughts on this?

      I still feel the logic of a full tank of fuel properly treated to keep moisture out is the way to go. I have been doing that for a lot of years with no spring time problems, so as they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Thanks for the question.

    Great video. I bought my first boat last spring and plan to winterize it with these techniques. It has a Mercury 75 hp 4 stroke outboard. I have a couple newby type questions. Does water have to be drained from the engine? And can the fuel be left in the lines as long as it is stabilized? Thanks.

      TMS - Try to get as much water as possible out of the system by raising and lowering the motor till there are no longer any drips and you should be good. As long as your gas is treated correctly, fuel in your gas lines will be fine. Be sure to unplug your gas line at the motor. Congratulations on joining the boat world, Remember "Time on the water is not deducted from your life"

    Nice video, except for cranking the engine with your finger in the plug hole and the plug wires not grounded somehow to the block. With a CDI type ignitions you can blow the powerpack if there is not a route to ground from the plug wires or coils, if anything you should have disconnected the lanyard so that the powerpack would be grounded out. Also it not called fogging oil because of the foggy exhaust it produces, it's called fogging oil, because it's an expansion oil that foams up and fills the area it is sprayed in like a fog or a mist.

    what about the boats battery...should you keep them in the house? is there something to do to winterize batteries?

    • @thefishingshow-fishingtips8996
      @thefishingshow-fishingtips8996  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great Question Mike,
      If you are able to take your batteries out and keep them in a cool dry place, that would be best, as long as they are kept fully charged. If they have to stay in the boat then they must stay fully charged to keep them from freezing. Like a car that sits out in the winter the batteries hold up as long as the car gets ran enough to keep the battery fully charged. Often trickle chargers are used to keep batteries charged. I DON'T recommend them, they often over charge the battery and shorten battery life. Use a charger that keeps the battery fully charged and turns off when its full and turns on only when it needs it.

      STA-BIL recommends, for storage up to 12 months -use 1 ounce (30mL) for every 2 1/2 gallons (9.5L) of fuel. But check the label before adding STAB-BIL or any other gasoline storage product.
