Been meaning to do a review on this, I caught the last 10 minutes when it was on TV (it features my old university supervisor Dr Lucy Hawkes), I’ll have to catch it on iplayer and make some notes for a video!
great video! i had lovely experiences with nurse sharks in Belize. they follow the divers as they get fed with lion fish. they came close and were brushing against us, i always opened my arms when they came towards me, which encouraged them to brush gently on my belly. some divers unfortunately were trying to hold on to their dorsal fins and not let go until they were pulled around. some even woke up sleeping sharks. at some point i was left by the dive group as my dive aprtner had to surface and needed assistence, so i found myself a bit lone in the ocean ( somewhere near the boat yet not a good dive masters care) 3 nurse sharks popped up and i followed them and i was right: they went back to the group for more food:) i probabaly was not far from the group but the visibility in the carribean is not great. however, they made me laugh. allowing tem to come close while carefully observing their behaviour is fun. on another day they took us to a feeding place in Belize, we all jumped in the water, but they then threw fish waste in and the sharks , of course , got into a feeding frenzy. i am grateful for yor educational videos and i hope the right people see it!
Wonderfully said. I blame selfie culture and people like influencers for making people think they can pose with any wild animal they please like it's just another photo op. Also lack of common sense is exceedingly common. Thus, why people regularly fall to their deaths while posing somewhere edgy and dangerous like the edge of a cliff or hanging off a bridge. Wild animals can and will defend themselves if they feel threatened. And when it's a predator like a shark, bear, wolf, big cat or cobra, that kind of mistake can be fatal. And even if it isn't, there will be repercussions. Including not only injury but also potential legal woes if it's a protected species they're harassing in search of the most impressive selfie. Like you said, don't feed (especially not by hand) or touch wild animals! It's an honor to just get to share the ocean, forest or whatever with them. They are not our pets!
The 280 stitches for that dude’s face is INSANE. For context, doing a Whipple procedure, which involves removing the gallbladder and parts of the stomach, pancreas, and small intestine, then connecting all the remaining parts back together, uses just under 200 stitches!
I have a tshirt with a bison on it that says, " Do not pet the fluffy cows". So how about one that says "Do not pet the vacuum cleaners of death", with a nurse shark on it?
This was great! I can say I've almost been bit by a large nurse shark during my first and only shark encounter. The nurse sharks were being fed and were accustomed to it. Suddenly, a large one was right in front of me. In my surprise, I put my hands up and out toward the shark. The shark was deciding that my hands were food when I remembered what I had been told to do. I put my hands and arms to my chest and the shark instantly lost interest. I felt a little stupid, but not nearly as stupid as I would've felt if I had been bit.
I’ve been to where that girl was, and a lot of people in this video were. This is in Compass Cay in the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas. We were strictly advised to keep our hands in fists and out of the water. Every time visitors come, the nurse sharks are fed. So they automatically associate humans with being fed. The nurse sharks are very sweet and friendly. There’s a more shallow area where the friendlier sharks will come over for more food and these are the ones that like to be / are okay with being held. My friends and I got to hold a large nurse shark, and then we all each got to hold some babies / smaller ones as well. But when not holding them, we had to keep our hands out of the water. This girl literally went to their feeding zone (why they all circled her) and stuck her hands out (they were expecting food). I’m surprised the people there / her tour guide or boat captain let her do this. My friend too wanted a picture like that, floating on her back with the sharks around. Our captain / tour guide made her hold her hands in fists and cross them over her body while floating on her back, to prevent her hands from being bit. Again, this is where the nurse sharks are fed squid and fish by people multiple times every day. As soon as people come up, they swarm to get food. This is why the people in this video visiting the nurse sharks at Compass Cay got bit.
Listen to the screeching and bleating from the influencer at the start. Leave those sharks alone and stop messing about with them! Great video thank you.
I'd like to see a video on you thoughts on what causes this disconnect with sharks that people don't have with other predators. You would never see people trying to touch a wild big cat, or whatever. But something about sharks makes people think they can touch them... weird
I'm not so sure about that. I still remember a case involving a wild bear some years back where a woman wanted a picture of her baby with the bear and actually put the baby in the bear's "arms" to get a good photo. The bear killed the baby, of course, responding just as it would to a human giving it food. Then you throw in all the folks who've been injured or killed getting too close to bison, bears, moose, and a whole host of other wildlife to get photos and ending up attacked. When it comes to stupid people, species of wild animal doesn't usually matter.
When I was a kid, there was a pet store near me that had an open aquarium on the floor with 3 nurse sharks swimming in it. By then, I'd already seen "Jaws" and had been studying sharks for a few years by then, so I didn't need to even read the sign saying, "Keep hands out of the water! They bite!" because I was already familiar with their mouth, and the last thing I wanted was to feel the power of jaws that could crush clam shells!
Can’t help but think that in that one video of the girl reaching out to the fast approaching shark was trying to do the ‘put your hand on their nose and push them down and away’ “technique” we see on so many videos 🤦🏼♀️ Anyway, great video as always. Would love a ‘don’t touch the sharks’ hoodie!
I know an influencer who has done this sort of thing. I think some of these guys might want to look at how Valerie Taylor helped test chain mail dive suits. She tested it with nurse shark bites!
Not nurse shark, but saw a similar thing happen once. In middle and high school my family took a lot of carnival cruises because we had a cousin with a VIP membership so we got discounts. We often when to Grand Cayman and would always go to this tourist area with similar feeding petting stations for Southern Eagle Rays. On time we saw a frat bro on a dare grab the empty squid bucket, pour the water over his back and crouch in the water. the rays were shoving to get to the scent of food and his back was covered in massive suction bruises the rest of the week long cruise. Looked like he went five rounds with a shop vac. The guide just called him an idiot and asked what he thought would happen every time he complained about it hurting.
Love this video. I also found your shark posture video absolutely captivating. Despite my handle I am actually a biologist by trade focusing mostly on venomous reptiles. I had a killer idea for a video/ series of them where you do a viewing of some of the shark documentaries you enjoy most and maybe kind of expand on parts you find interesting. I love a lot of animal documentaries but I feel like they regurgitate the same facts just spun different ways. I crave more ya know? Go in depth on the stuff they highlight/ point out how new research contradicts/etc. Part of my work is public education and it really seems to be going through the motions with a lot of people. But when i talk to people and they ask follow up questions, I live for it. I was talking about one of the spitting cobra species and was going over basic stuff like “oh this cobra evolved the ability to spit venom as a defense mechanism” and someone genuinely took interest asking what drove that evolutionary adaptation and I got to geek out and talk about new research making the case that cobras in Africa evolved the ability along with the rise of humanity in The Great Rift Valley. Being able to nerd out to that level with education was the most memorable education moment in the several years I’ve been doing it. I would love to see something like that on this channel. Seeing you watch something that you love and can expand on and share with us with up to date research, how it’s maybe changed since the show aired, stuff like that would be an absolutely captivating watch. Keep up the awesome videos man I haven’t found a single one where I haven’t actually learned something from it.
I surfed for decades before an injury. Very often saw nurse sharks in the water. I learned to identify dorsal fins and which sharks could be a potentially dangerous. Never considered the nurse sharks might have a nibble at my dangling feet (trust me, I considered every other scenario). The only time I was fearful was when I was near a whale shark. I know they aren't aggressive, but their size is so intimidating. Be careful in the ocean, guys. Don't do dumb shit like these morons.
Great informative video Kris! It still baffles me that some aquariums have exhibits where you can touch nurse sharks smh. I hope this trend does not continue or move on to other species like the leopard sharks in San Diego. Before getting into the water with sharks please learn as much as you can about their behavior and what you need to do to keep yourself and the sharks safe 👍🏽
Kris, I’ve followed your channel for a while now and I see how you talk about not touching the sharks, and I agree. There are several divers who post videos of touching all kinds of sharks. This sends a bad message to uninformed people watching. It would be good to see you do a video about them so more people will get the right message. Cheers!! 😊

there are also a few master divers who have spent years with specific sharks & been able to remove hooks. But they don't allow other divers to touch the sharks.
I once swam in a nurse shark enclosure for a hotel chain in the Caribbean. Now, I've loved sharks all my life since childhood, so I would read and watch videos on sharks. One thing I learned aside not sticking my hands out towards sharks, is to watch their subtle movements. Movements that can tell of the sharks mood, such as stress, anxiousness, defensive territorial warnings. As such, yeah, the enclosure had many nurse sharks, all were seemingly relaxed, some people around at least kept their swimming slow and mostly at a distance of the sharks, some whom were laying at the bottom. At one point I was floating above but looking down with my mask, and I had drifted close to a somewhat big shark, a female. She was laying at the bottom, but she noticed me approaching, so she became a bit active. She rose about 3ft (the enclosure had a 15ft depth) and she started swimming in a zig zag pattern but turning back to her area. I stopped my drifting when I was a bit close to being above her, cause I realized she was in a stressful and territorial defense mood. I slowly backed away keeping my eyes one her, and she then settled back down. I guess watching videos like these, reading and taking serious all the info about them really taught me to pay attention and my respect to the animals that I love. And that is what people should do in order to protect them.
Nice intro. I think a T-shirt with "stop touching sharks" on it would be super funny. I read in a book called Sharks by John D Stevens from 1987 that there have been some cases where divers provoked a large nurse shark and the shark latched on and did not let go and the divers ended up drowning. What do you make of that Kris? BTW congratulations on reaching 50k subscribers. you've earned it.🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
People are stupid. They think they can get photographed all innocently in a pack of Nurse Sharks and nothing will happen. You get what you asked for. No you cannot just do whatever you please and in a world we don’t live in…THE OCEAN! So many clowns out there it’s entertaining. Great work as usual my fellow biologist.👍🦈🏴☠️
Saving this video for the next person I see saying “nurse sharks are harmless” Like they don’t understand anything that can bite is not harmless no matter how docile
Awesome video. Never underestimate a nurse shark. I was in Fuvamulah, Maldives this year, diving with tigers, reefsharks and whatnot. The dive guides were really experienced shark divers, and they told me, that only bites they ever experienced were from nurse sharks. Some tourists got their ears torn to shreds by them. The problem is, often they are either fed purposefully, or eat scraps dumped from resorts, so they start to view humans as a source of food.
These people didn't do research and only assume that they're harmless but obviously they're not. You gotta respect the ocean as if you are a guest to someone's house. Love your videos man keep it up :)
Krissy's videos are so much more refreshing than that channel FIERCE. There is another one too, but FIERCE just rubs me the wrong way. GRATS ON 50k Kris!
Great video bro! This is exactly why I don't like going to zoos or any space where dangerous animals are kept in captivity and can interact with park guests, it's just a disaster waiting to happen........ these influencers just trying to grab as much attention whilst exploiting the animal, truly disgusting...........
I volunteer with a pet reptile rescue and the owner likes to say "if it has a mouth it can bite" some animals are less likely to bite than others but every critter has their limit and it's not surprising that a wild animal would take a nibble. Even if it's not predatory you can still get bit. I also volunteer with dogs, a lot of puppies and sometimes adult dogs will have bad bite inhibition when they play and can do serious damage.
Now wait, I've seen tons of videos of this woman swimming with tiger sharks. She says to put your hand out on their snout and redirect them, and they just swim away. She's sticking her hand towards the pointy end of the shark!
Nothing can be as stupid as the shark week episode where they are trying to “prove” you’re safe in shallow water surrounded by BULL sharks . It didn’t end well!
Such stupidity - I have spearfishing friends who say nurse sharks can be a real nuisance when they've shot fish, they're not going to take off a limb but will give you some nasty scars.
What I'm learning is that: 1) Don't do a jesus pose near sharks 2) Don't kiss sharks 3) Kristian is the chosen one who doesn't get hurt by nurse sharks because he's protected by divine power (not doing jesus pose or kissing shark)

great video! i had lovely experiences with nurse sharks in Belize. they follow the divers as they get fed with lion fish. they came close and were brushing against us, i always opened my arms when they came towards me, which encouraged them to brush gently on my belly. some divers unfortunately were trying to hold on to their dorsal fins and not let go until they were pulled around. some even woke up sleeping sharks. at some point i was left by the dive group as my dive aprtner had to surface and needed assistence, so i found myself a bit lone in the ocean ( somewhere near the boat yet not a good dive masters care) 3 nurse sharks popped up and i followed them and i was right: they went back to the group for more food:) i probabaly was not far from the group but the visibility in the carribean is not great. however, they made me laugh. allowing tem to come close while carefully observing their behaviour is fun. on another day they took us to a feeding place in Belize, we all jumped in the water, but they then threw fish waste in and the sharks , of course , got into a feeding frenzy. i am grateful for yor educational videos and i hope the right people see it!
"Sea puppies" may well be true, but people need to remember even puppies have sharp teeth!
As long as they’re not seriously hurt a bite is the best thing that’s ever happened to them. Content, Content, Content. Nothing else matters.
0:18 notification comes on.. immediately stop watching what I was watching 😂
This is some top shark bytes dedication!
@@SHARKBYTES clearly whatever I was watching wasn't as interesting 🤔 nahhh he won't bit you 🤣🤣🤣also yes, need stop touching sharks merch! 🦈🦈
Loved the intro! 😂 Sea doggos when humans annoy them!
😂😂 glad you enjoyed it!!

all sharks cute and gentle if you watch them from a proper distance and i think people kindaa pushing their luck... love the video!!!
At least you remembered what to do before you could get bit. You'd think influencers would learn that lesson after that first girl got bit.
@@hippolyte90they were too busy " influencing " to be 'influenced' by others doing stupid stuff before them. 😁
"Serrated vacuum cleaners of death," now THERE'S a phrase. Nurse sharks are my favorites, but I definitely wouldn't try to pet (or kiss!) one.
Listen to the screeching and bleating from the influencer at the start. Leave those sharks alone and stop messing about with them! Great video thank you.
I'm confused as to how someone though kissing a shark would be a good idea... it's just ... I mean... I can't
Remember kids, when a wild animal is described as "harmless" or "docile", there's always an unwritten "assuming you leave it alone"
Huh?! You couldn't be more wrong. Idiots mess with every dangerous predator on the planet, the more dangerous- the more idiots mess with them.
Agreed, they should be respected as other wild animals, doesn't matter if they're predators or not, we need to leave them be 🙄
I love the kids faces all being At perfect biting level… good call mom.
Yes “Stop Touching Sharks!” merch please 😅
When I was a kid, there was a pet store near me that had an open aquarium on the floor with 3 nurse sharks swimming in it. By then, I'd already seen "Jaws" and had been studying sharks for a few years by then, so I didn't need to even read the sign saying, "Keep hands out of the water! They bite!" because I was already familiar with their mouth, and the last thing I wanted was to feel the power of jaws that could crush clam shells!
“Common sense” and “influencer.” Two words never before uttered in the same sentence.
Sea puppy is the perfect description for sharks. Puppies have really sharp teeth, and bite everything.
I am never short of amazement to the amount of people to fail to realize that wild animals are going to act like wild animals from time to time...
"Don't stick your hands towards the pointy end of the shark" - best advice --> has to be a T-Shirt😂🤣😂
Definitely wanna see some "stop touching sharks" merch!! It's honestly beyond me how little research some people do before diving with sharks
„Serrated vacuum of death“ …with a cute cartoonised nurse shark with big eyes. Now that would be a T-Shirt! 😂
Kris, I’ve followed your channel for a while now and I see how you talk about not touching the sharks, and I agree.
There are several divers who post videos of touching all kinds of sharks. This sends a bad message to uninformed people watching.
It would be good to see you do a video about them so more people will get the right message. Cheers!! 😊
Can you highlight some examples for me - need a base of content to push off from :)

@@SHARKBYTES how can I send it to you?

there are also a few master divers who have spent years with specific sharks & been able to remove hooks. But they don't allow other divers to touch the sharks.
Wot? You mean when a Great White smiles at you he's not looking for a cuddle lmao
BTW congratulations on reaching 50k subscribers. you've earned it.🦈🦈🦈🦈🦈
That’s a pretty crazy story, I’d love to learn more about it!
Human entitlement on stark display. Not to mention stupidity, of course.
I feel bad for that kiddo. They don't know better. The mom should though.
Crazy thinking she could hold four of them at once!!
It’s like snakes. I live in Australia and most people who get bitten are messing around with them.
That’s NOT ok and incredibly disrespectful to this beautiful creatures!
Thank you so much for this video!
Sharks like is that something in your hand, Nah, that was your hand. Ooops.
I didn't even watch the video. Just saw the title and knew that "influencers" got what they deserved!
NEVER underestimate wild animals!!
Saving this video for the next person I see saying “nurse sharks are harmless”
Like they don’t understand anything that can bite is not harmless no matter how docile
Just wanted to say - Great job, love your channel and work, really nice style of presenting and to all the 'Non science believers'
!! Bite Me !!
ALSO excited about the new merchandise oooohhhh 🎉🎉🎉
Got close to Nurse sharks and Stingrays in Tobago whilst diving. Would never dream of trying to touch one. Should always respect all wildlife.
I wonder where the 'nah, he won't bit you' guy received his nurse shark behaviour doctorate
They walk amongst us 🙄🙄
Port Jackson sharkes are my favourite shark species and one of our more friendly species here in Australia
i do love the horror true crime like intro it was brilliant xD great video as always
Omg the part when you call the kids little terrors 😂
How long will it be when an influencer tries to do this with a Great White Shark...?
Tourist:"What could possibly go wrong?"
Sharks:"We re glad you asked that question....."
I admire the restraint you show in your choice of thumbnail.
That intro was epic!!!
What I'm learning is that:
1) Don't do a jesus pose near sharks
2) Don't kiss sharks
3) Kristian is the chosen one who doesn't get hurt by nurse sharks because he's protected by divine power (not doing jesus pose or kissing shark)
It’s like people forgot they are still shark 😑
Wow, that "kiss" was hilarious! Shark came out of immobility like Hannibal Lecter!🤣
