The crisis was caused by currency devaluation; the current account deficit, and investor confidence played significant role in the sharp exchange rate depreciation.
The economic crisis was primarily due to the large and growing fiscal imbalances over the 1980s. During the mid-eighties, India started having balance of payments problems. Precipitated by the Gulf War, India’s oil import bill swelled, exports slumped, credit dried up, and investors took their money out.[6] Large fiscal deficits, over time, had a spillover effect on the trade deficit culminating in an external payments crisis. By the end of 1990, India was in serious economic trouble.
The gross fiscal deficit of the government (centre and states) rose from 9.0 percent of GDP in 1980-81 to 10.4 percent in 1985-86 and to 12.7 percent in 1990-91. For the centre alone, the gross fiscal deficit rose from 6.1 percent of GDP in 1980-81 to 8.3 percent in 1985-86 and to 8.4 percent in 1990-91. Since these deficits had to be met by borrowings, the internal debt of the government accumulated rapidly, rising from 35 percent of GDP at the end of 1980-81 to 53 percent of GDP at the end of 1990-91. The foreign exchange reserves had dried up to the point that India could barely finance three weeks worth of imports.
In mid-1991, India's exchange rate was subjected to a severe adjustment. This event began with a slide in the value of the Indian rupee leading up to mid-1991. The authorities at the Reserve Bank of India took partial action, defending the currency by expending international reserves and slowing the decline in value. However, in mid-1991, with foreign reserves nearly depleted, the Indian government permitted a sharp depreciation that took place in two steps within three days (1 July and 3 July 1991) against major currencies.

Credit for turning India around should go first of all to P.V. Narsimha Rao - for appointing a brilliant bureaucrat (Dr. Manmohan Singh) as finance minister and giving him a free hand to act in the best interests of the nation. The second person who deserves a lot of credit for the resurrection of India is Dr. Manmohan Singh himself - both as finance minister, and later as prime minister. The fact that both these men were from Congress party has nothing to with their actual achievement. They could well have been part of the BJP, and the end result would probably have been the same even then.
Dr. Manmohan Singh's contributions to the nation will be acknowledged one day, I hope. He has been one of the most brilliant, albeit low-key, leaders our country has ever had.

i am from kashmir.. pandits wre our neighbours.. i still remember that day when that inhuman act was happened in nadimarg. a village 2 km away from our village.. one of my brothers friend mohan lan's son, who was came his home (nadimarg) after a year has also been killed.. i was in 2nd standard and after listen to that sad news we ran to nadimarg and trust me, everyone was crying to see the dead bodies of those 24 hindus. by god i still remmember the little hindu girl was in my uncles lap. that moment was really heartbreaking.

Shashank Kolhe - Pls read properly. Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister and not Prime Minister in 1991, when he devalued INR by 25% and introduced financial reforms.
Contrary to popular belief that Manmohan Singh took a bold decision, the financial reforms were forced on India after collapse of USSR as a result of which India’s forex reserves came down to ZERO resulting in selling of 66 tonnes of gold by RBI.

The theological principles, the articles of faith, the way of life, rites and rituals etc of the Sikhs are altogether different from those of the Hindus but the Indian government has, still, denied the Sikhs their right to have a separate law of their own. The Hind law has been forced upon them against their will.
Sikhism was founded by Guru Nanak Sahib. Guru Nanak Sahib was born in a Hindu family but he never adopted Hindu religion. On the other hand he rejected Hinduism and its rituals. He refused to wear Janeo (a thread which is sacred to the Hindus). For a Hindu Janeois obligatory (though most of the Hindus have forsaken it now). Mohammed, the founder of Islam, was born in a Quraishi family. He founded Islam and rejected the religion of the Quraishi Arabians. It will be wrong to call Islam as a branch of old Arabian religious belief. Moses, the founder of Judaism, was born in a family which worshipped idols. Moses rejected idol worship. Christ was born to Jewish parents. No one will define Christianity as an offshoot of Judaism. Similarly, Guru Nanak Sahib, though born to Hindu parents, founded a distinct religion. It is ignorance (or conspiracy) to call Sikhism as an offshoot of Hinduism. Guru Nanak Sahib had proclaimed in unequivocal words that the Sikhs are "neither Hindus nor Muslims" (na ham Hindu na Musalman). Before his death Guru Nanak Sahib appointed Guru Angad Sahib as his successor and merged his light in the light of Guru Angad Sahib. Guru Sahib fulfilled his mission in ten lives (Guru Nanak sahib to Guru Gobind Singh Sahib). Guru Gobind Singh Sahib installed Guru Granth Sahib as Guru-Eternal of the Sikhs on October 6, 1708, thus granting the status of Guru to the Word.
Sikhism is an independent religion. It does not have roots in any other religion or ideology. Like Hinduism, it is not mere ritualistic way of life. It has no superiority of any special caste, class, country colour or gender. Sikhism does not consider this world as unreal; of course it is Maya (illusion). It advocates oneness of spiritual and temporal domains. In Sikhism the king is a spiritual humanitarian ruler. Sikhism teaches non-attachment for the worldly things. On the other hand, Hinduism is a conglomeration of paradoxical concepts and teachings.

Narsimha rao went against all the congress leadership to open economy, he is the real father of economic reform. But Mr. Manmohan singh gets the credit. Narsimha Rao was sidelined because of this strong measure which went against his party.
