"To bring" in Spanish: "Llevar" or "Traer"?

- Learn fast and easy how to use the verbs "llevar" and "traer" in Spanish. Whereas in English you would say "to bring", in Spanish we use two different verbs. One, "llevar", is used when you want to take something from here to there (de aquí para allá). The other, "traer", is the opposite because you are taking that something from there to here. Aha! This is the difference between these two Spanish verbs. If you watch my lesson, you will learn these two verbs with examples, and details so you will not make mistakes. This is great. I always thought 'llevar' and 'traer' had the same meaning and were interchangeable but now I know better. Also, it's easy to remember which one to use when if I think about the phrase 'para llevar' which has the meaning of ordering some food 'to go'. If you order 'to go' from a restaurant, you are always taking it with you - they're not bringing it to you, so it's 'llevar'. Thanks for the excellent lesson.

“Llevar” has the double L and so does there “allí”. I will use that mnemonic to remember the difference

djb1ge Depends on who you're talking to. If you're at your house and Ana asks you to bring a cake to the party you say to her "Yes, I will bring you a cake"
But if your roommate asks you before you leave if he can have a slice of cake, you say "No, because I'm taking this cake to the party"

traer and llevar are both situations we would usually say bring for in english.
R: can you bring a cake.
P: yes I'll bring one.
R: do you want to take a sausage(with you)?
P: no, i wont take one. I'm a vegan, that's why my cake sucked.

Also note the translation of "Do you want me to bring something?" "¿Quires que lleve algo? Lleve is the SUBJUNCTIVE form! The subjunctive form is always used after "Do you want me, him, her, us them TO DO something?"

I've been teaching myself Spanish at home and the way I understood it is that llevar also kinda means to carry so it's like you ask someone to bring you something and then they agree to carry it to you

Actually, English does have two verbs that are similar to llevar and traer : bring and take. The difference between the use of these 2 words is the location of the speaker to the listener and the direction of which the action will be going. Here are some examples: Take your dog away, it is scaring my child. (Wouldn't say, "bring your dog away.") Take this coffee to the table in the corner. Thank you, for bringing my coffee. Teacher to student: Take your project home to finish and bring it back tomorrow.
It seems similar rules apply to bring/take and llevar/traer. (Ooops, just saw djb1ge's comment. :) :)

Thanks Ana for another very useful lesson! What helps me keep these two verbs straight is to think of llevar as "delivering" something somewhere. I think of traer as someone bringing something to my location.

Lleve is referring to the item you are bringing. "Me quieres que lleve algo" Do you want me to bring (it) something"
if it's subjuntivo, why not 'que lleves' (for tú) but lleve?

This is good. The way I teach the difference, I say Llevar is for you (bringing) and Traer is for the other person (bringing). At least this works for me when I'm using Spanish.

But you can say 'Tu llevas/Usted lleva', as well as 'Yo traigo, so how would that 'difference' you're teaching work?
This won't explain why Pedro said "No lo traigo" when he got to Rosita's party because according to your theory, he should've used "traer" since he is the one who's supposed to bring. I think Ana's explanation makes more sense, which is "traer" is used when the action of bringing is toward the speaker, while "llevar" is used when the action is outward the speaker. It doesn't matter that who brings. What matters is where people are bringing to.

So when we say “ do you want me to bring something’, we are literally saying “ ¿ you want that I bring something ? Using the subjunctive form of the verb.

I'm afraid it may be more simple than we/you think. "Traer" is "bring", like "can I bring sg. (with me to your place)." And "llevar" means "take" like: "You can take cakes." Puedo traer algo a tu casa. - Sí, puedes traer algo. Después tú puedes llevar palomitas al cine, pero yo no iré." But afterwards you can take popcorn to the cinema, but I won't go. (If I will go, you can "bring". => Tú puedes traerlas...) As I think.

In British English, the form "bring there" does not usually exist, but it does in US English. For example, in the USA, parents BRING their kids from home to school. However, in the UK and its former colonies, parents TAKE the kids to school. The standard rule is therefore in the UK: take THERE and bring HERE. Nevertheless, in the USA and the UK , "I´ll arrive at your house with something" is "I´ll bring it" i.e "Can I bring a cake" or "I´ll bring a cake" (llevar). If you talk to fellow guests before the party "What are you taking to the party" "I´m taking a cake" is also llevar. If I understand correctly, traer is always bring HERE. In the USA, "food, coffee to go" is in the UK "food, coffee to take away" and in Spanish "comida, café para llevar".

Lemme get this straight: llevar is used when you HAVE the object and take it with you. traer is when you DO NOT HAVE it (not in your possession yet) and/or ask someone to bring it to you. Is this correct, Anna?
Anna...is ella..pronounced different in Barcelona to the way you pronounce it ...ie Mexican Spanish...you're way sounds like ejja...explain please..mick.
