Dark Souls II LOVES Raytracing

- In this video I show off the newest version of the IMMERSE Pro RTGI shader via Reshade. I'm honestly blown away by how good the results are. Now sadly it is a paid shader, but it's so good that he deserves money for this imo. It's been around for years, but keeps getting better. #darksouls2 #ds2 #rtx #raytracing #rtgi

I do plan on releasing my preset file if others would want to use my settings, since they honestly work really well
shaders and presets are for actual mongos
Alternate title: Fromsoftserve ovulating over RTGI reshade for 33 minutes straight
I love how saturated the world looks with this. DS2 had these really colorful models in mostly drab lighting conditions, so this really feels like making what was always supposed to be.
Oversaturated.
For those that don't like how fog get's quirky with ReShade RTGI, I highly suggest pairing it with Reviel shader, it uses a heuristics aproach to handling quirks with fog etc (obv it slightly dampens RTGI effect, but you can bump it up a bit to compensate, and ofc to enter debug view for RTGI, must turn Reviel off first)
yep, or even better, you can use the REST addon to target which shaders to skip essentially
This looks amazing! I only have an RTX 2080 so I cant mod as hardcore with the shader mod atm but im sitting at 50 fps with your 2k texture mod and just started a playthrough of your Bearer of the Curse mod. Playing at 4k with RTX HDR on and RTX Dynamic Vibrance with 50/50 Intensity and Saturation boost with a 1000 nit profile on my screen. Might need to go back to a 400 nit true black profile if the environments aren't dark enough but ill test out the darker areas a tad later after beating Pursuer and unlocking that dark AF room with the key.
Love your work and when I upgrade my GPU soon I can't wait to try your Bloodborne mod too
Also i'm not sure why but I cant seem to change it to Fullscreen from windowed in the settings, not sure if this is going to affect anything. I read that changing the Hz of the monitor in windows settings to max at 60 would fix it but it didnt help
Calling screen-space GI "ray-tracing" is about as legit as calling Screen Space Reflections for "ray-tracing". I really dislike the naming of that shader.
if i had no idea what i was talking about, i'd have posted the same comment 👍🏻
It's still kind of "ray tracing" tho, isn't it? It still shoots rays and calculates bounces, but it only takes into account what you can see on your screen, and works in a similar way to screen space reflections and screen space ambient occlusion. It definitely pales in comparison to engine integrated ray tracing as it can't calculate light from off-screen, but I still think it's technically ray tracing, even if it's a sub par imitation of the real deal
@@zach1727No it isn't...that's like calling a ferrari supercar a formula 1 car
yeah if people start calling this ray tracing then companies are just going to start calling screen space gi ray tracing and itll become a meaningless word
@@zach1727 now, I'm no graphics programmer, but from what I've read about how stuff like SSR works, is that it uses some type of ray-tracing/marching algorithm against the depth buffer instead of scene geometry. Reshade RTGI does something similar afaik.
So yes, Reshade RTGI is technically ray-tracing, but it isn't what most people would think of. It's certainly not "RTX", the creator of the shader even says so himself.
Raytraced reflections: I sleep
Raytraced lighting: REALNESS
Woah this looks beautiful! Super well done to you, as well as everyone else who has worked on these mods!
When I get back from visiting family I guess I'm gonna be playing DS2 again 😁
It's a paid mod so no. It's perpetually going to be in "beta" forever.
This. It's a scam.
RTGI is just a fancy overlay mimicing raytracing through SSGI IT IS NOT RAY TRACING!!! a clear way to tell is by having a puddle and something reflecting off of it in frame then move the camera to only the puddle and NOTHING will be reflecting off the puddle as it only works with whats on the screen and not the whole scene. I wanted to clarify this as a lot of people for some reason see videos like this and assume its ray tracing.
That being said what API is DS2 wonder if we can remaster it with RTX remix.
There are still rays being traced.
@fromsoftserve it is not. It doesnt have access to the light sources in game it is using the gbuffer to predict. Lets assume it could somehow trace rays even then it wouldnt be accurate as it doesnt have the right information from the materials.
" a clear way to tell is by having a puddle and something reflecting off of it in frame then move the camera to only the puddle and NOTHING will be reflecting off the puddle " You are describing SSR not SSGI
@unclexbox85 you will still get this same effect in ssgi. The biggest difference in ssgi and ssr is ssr knows whats a reflective material and takes data from the camera and displays it ssgi does this AND takes the depth buffer and finds lights in the camera view only and displays a fake traced ray. That being said this method works semi decently on fixed camera positions but not fully controlled 3d cameras like dark souls.
@@unclexbox85 lighting and reflections are separate processes. Example; you can have ray traced GI in CP2077 while disabling RT reflections in favor of screen space reflections.
I wonder if the beta version of ds2 will be leaked one day and we’ll be able to try it
I love when it bounces around the scene!
15:00 He distracted you with his reflection D:
Wow that toggle is really noticeable lol that’s pretty insane
DS2 was one of the last games to use SGSAA and it also scaled up in quad sli revisted it with 4 980tis when rtgi became a thing i remember thinking damn this shader works so well on this game. Having more power then a rtx 3090ti back in the day could do some cool shit.
Now with all the new mods this game is just a gift that keeps on giving
Looks cool, but having to pay for it is quite the dealbreaker for me. On one hand i get that some may want to earn money for the work they do but in my opinion its not what modding is all about. Personally i'd prefer that the light bounce effect would be in LightningEngine (if it isn't already) with all the other enhancments that mod brings, i kinda like the look of that one better and the overall package.
Makes sense that the game that had it's lighting system ripped out takes to having a new one slapped in, in it's place, so well.
Man is on a mission
it would be nice if you showed the difference for more than a millisecond each time ;c
Gotta make sure that modder gets paid.
Majula.....home
At least it was before fromcultists fucked everything up.
Thats cool! I already seen this shader in old games and its pretty awesome!
I could be way off, but I do remember learning how to chain load injectors with reshade before.
Ok now we just need to raise money for him to get a OLED with HDR goodness 😁
Lmao I can’t wait to have an OLED one day.
Thanks for pointing out Immerse Pro RTGI. It's great. Heavy, though.
Nice bro, í play this mod now ksksk
Bro love ur efforts on your vids but if you would be kind enough to add like a tldr version in the first few mins of the videos, would really appreciate it. ❤
Appreciate the kind words, but I’m okay with people watching for as long as they’re interested. And if that means less people watch because of that, that’s okay.
stop calling it RTX!
nvidia has nothing to do with this shader
man i hate nv for what they've done with their marketing bullshit
i hope someone does dark souls rtx remix just like they are doing with half life 2
screen space rtgi completely defeats the purpose of rtgi
Lol it doesn't actually, but thanks for playing.
@@fromsoftserve the primary purpose of rt is accuracy. The secondary purpose of rt is persistence away from screen space. thanks parallax boy.
But it CAN serve as a substitute for bounce lighting in scenes where it works, that didn't have any previously, which is the case often enough here.
@@XxxTheFireEmblemxxXthanks for the chat engagement
Yep. Screen space shaders have occlusion artefacts, Renders over fog, breaks hud, messes up depth of field and it’s not even close to being physically accurate compared to in engine rtgi or path tracing. Screen space just simply doesn’t have enough information to accurately light a scene. I would personally only use it for screenshots
I think this video is somewhat misleading as it's not actual ray tracing or RTGI in a true sense or in the way that most agree on. It's commonly known and referred to as screen space GI but you kept referring to it as RTGI.
You could still talk about this mod as there are definitely some improvements here but be more clear about what it actually is and maybe approach it from a different angle. Perhaps a video on where this screen space GI works well/best and where it does not (where an actual RTGI solution would do better / show a noticeably different image). I think this approach would improve your credibility.
The way I'm thinking about it is this: I'd imagine Alex from Digital Foundry taking issue with the usage of the RTGI and ray tracing terms here. I've seen him complain about this on DF Direct before. DF are the lead technical analysis and game technology review team on TH-cam, and Alex is their main guy for ray tracing. One day they may want to cover your Bloodborne remaster work (great work!) but they may not want to collaborate if you are known for misleading or misusing technical terms often.
DF sucks but yeah
@coldturnipgreens how so?
@@coldturnipgreensthey literally objectively dont lmao. Wat a L take.
Might be a good idea to remove the volume fog for more accurate results. Not sure if youre able to though with ds2, but if you are itd be a good idea just to avoid incorrect light bounces
Yea, the LightingEngine definitely needs RT.
It's not quite the same, but ds2le does have a SSGI, which works in similar ways as the RTGI in the video, but at smaller radii
It just needs dynamic shadows and non-repeating textures.
I see or hear "reshade" and check out. I just can't get back into tweaking post processing fx. Just hours of depthmap vs UI and never being able to not see the inaccuracies. Give me probes and leaks.
Cool clickbait. The switch port of dark souls with hacks is better than your re-remaster.
hey! what about light engine in vanilla ds2?? i've seen in one of your videos that you can make it run in dx11 or whatever, wasn't that the problem that made it impossible to run ds2 vanilla with light engine? i follewed your instructions in that vid so can i use light engine on my vanilla ds2? (also, if that's the case, should i avoid vulkan?)
Nah, I don't pay for mods.
This looks so cool! Need a new GPU to try this out haha
My main eye-pain with DS2 is the ugly tiling / repeating textures in various landscape features in the distance and elsewhere. Are there any mods that can fix this?
Ugly textures aren't the only thing wrong with DS2's graphics, the N64 levels of polygons in a lot of places also doesn't help DS2's aesthetics. See: Shaded Woods. Like no exaggeration DS2 could have passed for a PS2 game in a lot of places.
@@KissyKaede ds2 has higher poly count than ds1
@KissyKaede somehow kinda agree thats The Reason DS2 its So optimize that can run on toaster
@@irpanfauzi1160 ah, that explains where all the DS2 apologists are coming from. Thank you for illuminating me!
@@KissyKaedethats an insult to ps2 games.
Glad to hear you were able to get the new GPU
That looks fantastic
Can this be baked ?
shouldve gone into aldias keep so we could compare it to the original gameplay trailer
This looks sick
Any news on the DS3lighting Engine? That's the one I want to try.
this👆
The dev said on discord its coming out early 2025
He's on bluesky. Just search for dslighting engine on there and he will turn up
(Never).
@@dessertfox5995 why use bluesky, thats just where the tumblr-twitter censorship hellscape resides.
I played maybe 2 hours of DS2 but I'd commit to much more with this. I was shadowpilled torchmaxxing waiting for what we saw in the prior versions and was wholly disappointed in the final product(s).
The torch is super important in about half of the areas. There are some like The Gutter where you literally can’t see where you’re going without a torch, but also places like Tseldora where carrying a torch protects you from crowds of spiders, Amana where a torch lets you see otherwise hard to spot underwater ledges that you don’t want to fall off, and No Man’s Wharf where one of the main enemy types is really intended to be fought with a torch. Lots of very dark sections of levels too - If you see torch sconces, I would recommend carrying a torch and lighting up a level as you go
Wow this is so good 😲
9:05 Massive you say?
This looks better than lighting engine
are you still working in the texture parallax mod?
7:14 Did you just call him a jabroni? I genuinely had no idea that was an actual word. Even the spellchecker on youtube doesn't recognize it lol.
How did you get the depth buffer working? no matter what I do i only get the left side
this looks so good.. i want to buy ds2 now
It’s a great game!
You're a wizard
Does anybody know what mods are compatibile to each other like lightining mode with bearer of the curse andd if is better seeker of fire or bearer of the cure mod?
Sir is that Sephiroth's Katana?
17,50 why character doesn't cast shadows?
Is it possible with new engine to add radiance cascades to calculate global illumination in this way?
anyone knows the name of the bg music ?
Majula theme.
SIIIIIU!!!!
Not even worth the hassel of dicking around with reshade til you get it working and looking right. I mean of you have time, go for it. Same reason why this guy is just doing a demonstration instead of a tutorial.
Is it possible to bring in path tracing?
32:55 i hate that guy
This aint 4K
Big dog, this is true. Since RTGI was heavy, running at 4K wasnt a good option
I'll never understand the need to slap "ray tracing" onto everything
it's the new slop for graphical trends
@@smolpp585true
It's really strange that you haven't taken this down yet. Were you paid to advertise this? In this video, you misunderstand RT at a fundamental level, gloss over shortcomings, and argue about it in the comments when you are objectively wrong. What's up, dude?
Lmao why would you think I’m paid for this? I think it looks great. And I do mention the issues it has. And the people in the comments are saying it’s not RT when it actually is. Now we may disagree whether it’s worth it or looks good, but it is actually raytracing. Now is it a native implemention and not screenspace? No. So there are shortcomings that come with it. Anyone with eyes can see that. If you have a problem with me showcasing a shader I really like, then you’re free to leave
@@fromsoftserve ok, have fun destroying your own credibility by lying to yourself. Bye!
@ lmaoooo I appreciate you continuing to comment and boost the engagement on this video.
@@fromsoftserve if my comments are that meaningful for your engagement, you’re in worse shape than it even looks.
Tell us how you really feel 🤣
yeah just play dark souls with a 1k gpu that looks like more sh!t then just using a different lighting engine. seems legit.
you talk too much
First!
Why waste so much time on these old, boring games?
