Yes, they were EXTREMELY underpriced in the past.
I’ve got one of those. I think it’s perfection. Everything lines up on mine. Runs 0spd out of the box and has held steady for the last two months. I also turned 55 this year, so buying the limited edition version was a no brainer for me.
Just got mine and it’s stunning. The bracelet is a bit on the rattle side - but nothing Strapcode can’t fix
@@DeeKay1911 on this models Strapcode cant fix it, yes, it doesnt have diashield coating and it look ridiculous different shine on metal so OEM bracelet is a must for these.
@@Visitor555 to be honest: Yes. There is a slight difference but it’s really nothing when you don’t know it. And in my book way better than the pin collar system bracelet that rattles a lot
@@DeeKay1911 For a non watch guy yeah, "if u dont know it" yes but we know it thats the problem, and when u spend that much money on a watch to have different finish bracelet than the head of the watch is not acceptable. But everybody can decide for himself.
Im not a Seiko fanboy - but this is absolutely cool! I dont even care about the bezel issue; this is a winner 👍
I always enjoy your videos and rarely comment; however I wanted to add that I recently purchased the Blue version of the Captain Willard after initially holding of buying it because I felt the retail price of $1,400.00 was too high for a Seiko with a 6R35 movement. As happens I could not get the watch out if my mind so after days of struggle I purchased the watch from an AD. Once I put the watch on my wrist I knew this wasn’t like my Samurai, Turtles or other Seiko dive watches. The watch is awesome. It’s fit and finish are excellent and the bracelet is a very big improvement. Overall I think the watch is worth the price.

I have a similiar feeling about the spb149. The quality is way above the cheaper prospec watches (turtle, samurai, etc.) I feel like you get what you pay for.
I hear ya, but what about that bezel alignment? Did yours have an issue? My only option is to buy online so I won’t get a chance to scrutinize it in hand first. If it’s a weird bezel I’ll never see past it. Bummer issue.
@@5stringBS My SPB149 bezel aligns perfectly. I purchased mine online about six months ago, maybe I lucked out, maybe I didn't...who knows. But as above, I believe it is better than the turtle, samurai, and such.
I’m one of those guys whose driven nuts by a bezel insert that doesn’t line up. $400 micros can line them up and even regulate their movement (Nodus)...come on Seiko!
Agreed. I’d never buy one without seeing it or a photograph or two from the dealer if buying online.
Better luck with JDM. They don't want to chance selling a misaligned bezel to some Yakuza dude who will blow their store up and kill their children.

I always keep my bezel about three or four clicks to the left/right of center just to drive all the OCD'ers out there (and there are plenty of them) crazy.
I have the SBDC101 and everything is perfect on mine. If you’re knocking these without having tried one on, you’re missing out on the overall fit and finish of the watch, which is way better than any of my other Seiko divers.

I bought that exact watch after dropping a considerable amount of $ on a Seiko SLA 037. I have a pretty robust diver section in my collection to include Blancpain, Rolex, Glashutte Original, etc. , but I must say that the SPB 149 is a pleasure on wrist and my bezel lines up perfectly.
Man I know I’m probably in minority but the 62mas was one of my favorite designs and I went with the San Martin 62mas homage and it definitely scratched that itch.
I have been looking for this watch on the preowned market and finally scored this week. There is just something about this dial color, the hands and the gold tone second hand that makes it stand apart from the regular issue model of this watch. Excellent review of a great Seiko. I wished this was a regular issue instead of a limited release, but I guess it doesn't hurt the resale value.
I got the SPB143 and no longer want or need a BB58. I got 20%off from an AD and this does the job very good for a diver and my “beater”. Saved me almost $2800 by not going with a BB58 and feel I don’t have to be as gentle with the seiko as I would with the BB.
Seiko's Submariner, a classic in the making.

Just recently purchased this watch preowned and it has been on my wrist for weeks now. Really scratches any itches that much more expensive competitors have to offer.
I also like it better than the SLA because I prefer the thicker bezel. Seems like a great everyday watch and could be someone's 1 watch collection. My bezel action has been getting better with more usage and surprisingly I have been satisfied with the bracelet. A milled clasp does indeed make a huge difference.
I got the 147 which I like a lot and feel it was a better price without the bracelet. That bracelet is def not worth 3-400 extra dollars, rather just by a strap code whenever they come out with it. I’d say it’s def closer to a 5-700 dollar watch but for the design I’ll pay some extra I admit, I hate most dive watch designs. Mine also lines up great and is about +4 seconds a day which is nice.
If a watch enthusiast was looking for a heritage reissued diver from the 1960’s I’d suggest a preowned Longines Legend Diver vs one of the many 62MAS variants at the $1000-$1350 price range. They can be found and IMO are heads and shoulders above these. The 42mm case and long lugs are a challenge for smaller wrists but most guys can pull them off.
I love Seiko, and they have released some fantastic models this year, but I can't justify the increase in price without a increase in QC. I will get my hands on a SPB143, SPB119 or SPB185 eventually either through the grey market or 2nd hand....but im sure not paying retail

This watch stand well against similiar priced Swiss watches. People seem to think Seiko are all cheap low tier watches, like the 5kx. I own the spb149, and it feels and looks premium. It feels like a 1400€ watch, like it should. The case finishing is amazing, the bezel action and alingment is perfect, the bracelet is very good, the movement is accurate, and so on. It's a mass produced watch, so there will be some pieces with qc issues, like alingment. So like with any expensive watch, you should go check it out before you buy it. Or ask for pictures if you're buying online. It's also a watch with rich heritage. The vintage look is amazing.

I own one and this is a superb watch. I agree they need to address their QC issues if they want more for their watches. At this price point, it’s unacceptable.
Was planning on getting one, but instead got a 5KX diver and did a sapphire, bezel and insert mod and saved about $700.

Fixing the bezel is easy...just takes finesse. I had to fix both my blue and gray dial 63MASs.

Dear Rob, Many thanks for this Divers Watch 40 mm and 13.5 mm thick with 6R35 movement from Seiko, however; a non signed crown still remains a big question for Seiko.
It's a beautiful watch, but I would have preferred the crown at 4 o'clock.

I would like to echo most of the other comments here but add one further point, 5500 watches is not limited. It's just a way to charge a couple of hundred dollars more. I really hope Seiko gets kicked in the nuts on this one, they deserve it for the con they are running on their loyal customers.

I prefer the 3 o'clock crown. 4 o'clock makes me twitch. This is a gorgeous watch.

Oh I thought the bezel thing was only a problem for the lower end seikos. I got a sumo and its perfect .. I have a samuria that was half the price and I got all sorts of issues with the bezel.

It kind of bugs me that the more expensive Seiko watches don't have signed crowns. My old sub $500 Blumo has a nicely done signed crown.

If the bezel isn’t aligned, I wouldn’t buy this watch. Luckily I was able to track one down from an AD and made sure the bezel was aligned. I ended up getting the 143 instead and got an okay discount on it. It’s what I’ve always wanted Seiko to make.

Seiko's quality control needs some improvement. But if the issues that I find fault with are on every example would that be quality control or just faulty engineering?

Love seiko, but they don’t have the details hammered down to justify selling at this price point. I would suggest sticking with their cheaper models or buy a brand with better QC at this price.
There is little room for Seiko. They are almost watches. Almost in most categories. Cward is doing flawless builds on C60 and seiko has issues with bezel alignment and bracelet...why can't they get that right?

They actually did screw it up. Some dials on 143, 145, and 149 have a misaligned index at 6. :/

The bezel insert is stainless steel, rare but true. Not aluminum or ceramic.
Why does seiko put pins in the bracelet right up to the end links it looks so ugly. Expensive watches shouldn't sound like a bag of coins when you move them.

Really like the watch but way too expensive. Seiko's been making their move to more expensive pricing but the reason why we love the Seiko brand is that it used to be the brand that was a mid-cost that used to punch up to higher quality. Just my opinion.

The prices on the Seikos have become ridiculous! Every other release is a non numbered limited edition. Not quite sure what makes them limited. You could buy a Richard Lebrand Odyssey 3 for well under half of this and with better specs. Goodbye Seiko!

Why do loyal Seiko-ists always bang on about and talk up the quality of the steel case ? 99 out of 100 sub700$ Hamiltons have amazing, beautifully tooled polished steel cases that put any Seiko in the shade.
If you want to remove the bezel insert use some golf club grip remover and let it sit for 24 hours, take a toothpick and it will come right off and you can reseat it. Quicker than bobs your uncle.
Great looking watch, the QC needs to be better. I got lucky and have a Samurai thats spot on QC wise. So i'm staying put.

For those who evaluate based on Spec vs Price alone, i feel sad for you when you buy your pathetic Rolex Submariner and any other overpriced Swiss.
Nice looking watch. But wouldn't pay that much for a Seiko. It's grossly overpriced for what it is. And that bracelet is way subpar for a watch that costs that much, that's inexcusable. For that price I'd much rather get a Swiss watch like a Mido Ocean Star, or even a micro brand with similar specs for hundreds of dollars less.

The watch is nice but after my "Willard" experience I'm staying away from these mid range Seikos. My 5KX which I'm very pleased with keeps way better time.

Theres no distortion, only from very tight angles. A single domed crystal would be quite noticeable from straight on.

@@rossanthony7573 it could be double if the the underside dome is smaller/ greater than the outer one, but on this watch the outer dome is so slight it seems unlikely. I've been trying to find something official from Seiko but all their sites simply refer to it as 'domed', not single or double. 🤷🏻♂️

The problem is one of expectations. You think they should be cheap and your disappointed that they're not. Look at the whole watch industry, prices are up across the board. Seiko aren't the only ones. IMO watches in general are all moving if not to luxury, at least to 'jewellery' of some sort. Microbrands are simply filling a void left by the industry at the bottom. It'll be interesting to see what happens with the microbrands in the coming years for sure.
