I couldn't put it down when I read it last. Such a good book!

Congrats on finishing it! I have yet to read it and am debating on whether or not I want to...I'll probably read it now, though, so I can talk to you about it :-)

I am really interested to hear your thoughts on it! I'm so excited for the movie! You should go watch the trailer and see what you think, especially if you'd seen it before finishing the book. EEEeeeeeeee!!! lol I think it looks promising!

Way to be late to the party.

I can't say I appreciate the negativity in this comment - it's discouraging at best. I'm not a strong reader and have a great deal of other reading required of me by my master's program. I could just say "way to be a jerk," but instead I'll ask, are you suggesting I not bother to read or discuss anything that I can't finish as soon as avid recreational readers because so many will have already discussed it?

Ummm... no... I was just trying to mess with you because that's how I show affection?

Ruth E. Day well, success? As a friend whose thoughts I value, you have been able to successfully mess with me by implying a standard for validation that I will likely never be able to meet. That is, if I can't make it to the "party" then my thoughts on a book are somehow less.
I do take special issue with this as reading has never really come easy for me, and I have experienced - and seen others experience - a great deal of discouragement though comments like these and certainly much much worse. Surely your comment was small, but that doesn't mean it lacks impact. I've seen people choose not to read anymore, turn that negativity against reading itself, and further discourage others from reading as well. This is not how I have responded to discouragement, but it was a long time before I learned to read for enjoyment.
As your friend, I'm letting you know that your comment is discouraging, certainly isn't supportive, and does not promote literacy, which I believe is counter to what you would prefer to do. I don't think you intended any harm. Honestly, I think you would want to avoid that, and so I'm telling you how you've come across so that you are aware. Beyond that I'll ask you, as my friend, for more reading encouragement (God knows I need it). DFTBA

Sorry, then. I never would have left this comment for someone who I didn't believe knew me well enough to know I wasn't being serious. I tend to be a little less... censored, I guess? when commenting on friends' videos than those of others. Of course I want to know your thoughts and eagerly await tomorrow's video.
And I didn't know about your difficulties with reading. For some reason your video led me to believe you'd read the whole book in one night, which belies an aptitude for the activity. I had just figured it had taken you a while to get to it since I'm sure you are very busy with grad school. Either way, I'm glad you're finding time to read for pleasure. If you ever need recs, let me know :)

Ruth E. Day Hey, I think it's pretty common for us to assume similarities over differences, particularly with the people we have connected with. I don't hold anything against you. In fact, this has helped me gather some thoughts that I think I what to make a video about.
Online - which seems to be filled with the voices of avid readers - and within popular reading culture in general, I've often observed reactions of shock (nearly to the point of offense) when someone admits to not have read x, y, or z. People do the same with movies etc., but for those of us who have difficulty reading, a book presents a tremendously more daunting and time consuming task than a two hour movie, experiencing a certain food, or some other pleasure that others have enjoyed in abundance. Added to this is a sense of rejection or lack of acceptance in the astonished disbelief shown, which is much like a virgin being ostracized by the sexually active or vice verse.
Really, I don't know if I could edit a video on this down to close to a minute, but I'll do my best to keep it short. I just hope I'll be able to articulate my thoughts in a way that's clearly understood. Wish me luck I guess :-)
