"Practically Illiterate"

  • The title of this video is how I have often described myself to others as a way to explain why I have not read x,y, or z, because there is a culture that assumes some deficiency in those who are not as well read, and my choices seemed to be having some disability, laziness, or just being an idiot otherwise. My hyperbally has usually satisfied these concerns most quickly so that conversation could move beyond the question of why I am not as well read. This is actually an important concern to me, so thank you for your time and openess. DFTBA

I like this video a lot. I've been reading for enjoyment my whole life (I learned to read at three), but despite that, I'm also a slow reader compared to others, which I didn't realize until I was an adult. I also can't read the same amount as some of my friends, and while I read a lot, I pick carefully which books to read. If I'm not that interested in a title, I don't want to waste time trying to slog through it because it will take me forever (that's why I never bothered with the His Dark Materials series).
I support your reading habit and I'm glad you're getting to experience the magic of fiction. :)

Well said! I hate when communities, especially the reading one, discourage people who are "late to the party". Isn't that how you make grand entrances? ;)

This is an awesome video. I myself am a slow reader. Battling with dyslexia my whole life I wasn't encouraged to read. I was excused from reading allowed in classes I was sent to other rooms for tests to have them read to me, and answers pretty much given to me simply because I was slower at it then others. I hated reading because I was never given the chance. Because of this I graduated HighSchool on a 7th-8th grade reading level. It wasn't till I was 21 that I found myself really ENJOYING reading. And I know that I'll never be on the same level as my other fellow readers BUT that doesn't make me any less of a reader, an enjoyer of a good book. Kudos to you sir for this video ... I appreciate it!

Holy crap, that's the WORST way to teach a child...I'll just do it for you! I'm glad you were able to learn how to enjoy reading. :)

Welcome to the party! the punch bowl is over there!
But yeah, I'm a slow reader too, personally, I'm a big fan of audiobooks. I suggest checking your local library to see if they have audiobooks or have an online place to download some.

Yea, I meant that comment more as a satire of that mindset than anything else. Sorry again. Of course I'm always happy when people read books I love even if it has been a while since they came out. There's always more room for other voices in the conversation. And I feel like most true book lovers feel this way.
And even though I've been reading voraciously my entire life, I feel like I've always read a bit slower than most other avid readers. Like, I can finish a book in a day, but I have to be reading ALL DAY. When I watch videos from others in the booktube community and see that they've read multiple long books in a weekend, I just think WHERE DID YOU FIND THE TIME??? And, believe me, I come to many books "late to the party" as well just because there are SO MANY THINGS I want to read and not enough time in the day for me to read them. And I'll often feel discouraged from reading books that have been out for a while because I for some reason feel a lot of pressure to read ALL THE BOOKS AS SOON AS THEY COME OUT so I can be at the forefront of the conversation.
Also, I think there's a huge difference between reading slowly and reading well. Just because you read slowly doesn't mean you're a bad reader. I've known people who can finish a novel in a matter of hours but what do they remember in a week? A month? A year? Not much, if they remember the book at all. That's one of the main reasons I've never pushed myself to read faster, because I want to let the story to sink in as I'm reading and to feel the emotion of every scene.
    Damn this comment is long.

this! I'm like the slowest reader ever. comments like "oh, it took you that long? I read it in an afternoon." can be so discouraging sometimes

    Great message!
I still haven't read The Casual Vacancy yet but I haven't heard many people rambling on about that one so I guess I got lucky

I really appreciate everything covered in this video. As someone who has almost entirely stopped reading for enjoyment due to school and other time commitments I've fallen into the category of not reading all the books everyone else I know seems to have. And I haven't even had a chance to read TFiOS so props to you for getting through it. I hope to read it in time for the movie, but I've found myself struggling to the days where I could read for hours on end for fun.

    Good message, important to remember.
I think it's really easy to forgot that others can have problems with seemingly smaller things, especially when it's not something you'd necessarily 'see'.
