How To Upcycle An Old Coat With Floral Appliques and Ruffles

- In this upcycling DIY video, we will be upcycling a pre owned jacket and creating a beautiful piece of wearable art. Mine was bought pre owned, maybe you have an old coat or jacket in your closet that needs jazzing up, this is a wonderful way to breathe new life into a tired old garment. This coat is all about the purple! The lovely purple flowers are cut from an old curtain, fusible interfacing is added to them and then they are sewn to the coat...I will show you in great detail, every little step. I have also added, what I call balloon ruffles to the sleeves and hemline. These ruffles are made from thrifted vintage linen. We cut the coat to create a high low design, and cut the sleeves for a vintage looking 3/4 length sleeve and sew the ruffle to it. Such a fun and beautiful project, hope you enjoy!

There are some good hand stitching tutorials on TH-cam for people who either don't want to spend money on a machines or have a space for it. It works on most fabrics but knit. It does take a long time but it is attractive. It's also portable. I don't remember who I watched. I just watched multiple people and tried it. I do have a machine but I really just don't understand how to make it stitch the way I want and it's always in the way.
You transformed this coat in the most beautiful way, Traci! You matched the linen so well with the original coat -- amazing. The finished coat is so trendy and beautiful! I love your purple boots and bag too. The way you wear it with jeans and a sweater looks great, and focuses the attention on the coat. I love your videos -- they give me such a boost. 💗 💗

WoW I didn't think I would ever try this but I am going to make it one of my goals. I saw a girl in Joann Fabrics today with a sweater on with these type of sleeves. I remembered this video and now I have an inspiration after seeing her sweater..... actually it was black velvet so maybe it was a short jacket. Traci, you are absolutely the absolute best!!!

I'd never have figured it out in a million years without you, and I made some nice things. I've never been able to make clothes, but I have just done your three tiered skirt with flannel shirts, and I applique a bit on it as well. Cant believe how good it turned out, and I love it! 25:20 Rather than slipping the sleeve over the sewing machine arm, turn sleeve inside out. Place the area to be appliqued facing up on machine bed under machine needle and sew. All the bulk of the garment is pushed out of the way and you are more able twist the sleeve left and right as needed. This method allows easier maneuverability of sleeve (pant leg, cuff) and works better for me. I hope I explained it clearly 😊💜

It’s very pretty. I believe it would take me a long time to sew all those on. I’d probably use fabric glue. Then maybe tack them on in places.

Have you ever heard of a knee lift? It is a game changer if your machine has a hole for one I cannot recommend it enough! It eliminates using your hand to lift the presser foot and makes applique go so tast!
